ThisinstructionbookisintendedforusebyoperatorsoftheBirdDiagnosticSystem(BDS)CalCart.Thischapter
containsintroductoryinformationincludingcomponentdescriptionsanditemssupplied.
TheBDSCalCartisdesignedforimmediate,effortlessuse.Ithasthreeprimarycomponents:
Laptop,BirdRFmonitoringanddiagnosticsystem,andBirdLoad.See
Figure1onpage2 .TheBDSCalCartisa
broadband(307kHzto100MHz)RFmonitoringanddiagnosticsystemdesignedtobeusedwiththesupplied50
ohmload.BirdLoadsarelowreflection50terminationsthatcandissipate5kWto10kWmax.,dependingonthe
model.Thesecomponentsareinstalledonacartforeasytransportation,andconnectedsothattheonlysetup
requiredisconnectingACandRFpower.Thecartissuitableforuseinacleanroomenvironment,andisequipped
withfourswivelcastersformaximummaneuverability.

ThereceiverusestheStandardTrackingModetocollectFrequencydata.TheStandardTrackingModeiscapableof
collectinginformationateitherofthefollowingresolutions:

Standard Tracking Mode
Thereceiver’sStandardTrackingmode,collectsvoltageandcurrentinformationforuserspecifiedfundamental
frequencies.Uptothreefundamentalfrequenciescanbespecifiedtomonitor.Foreachfundamentalfrequency,up
to10harmonicfrequenciescanalsobemonitored(inadditiontothefundamental)andasubsetofupto6mixing
productscanalsobemonitored.Thereceiverreportsvoltageamplitude,currentamplitude,andphaseinformation
asadatasetforeachspecifiedfundamentalfrequency.
Example‐
Select2MHzasthefirstfundamentalfrequency(F1)and13.56MHzasthesecondfundamentalfrequency(F2).
SpecifytwoharmonicsforF1(H1andH2)andoneharmonicforF2(H1),theresultswouldbegroupedasaset
foreachfundamentalfrequencyasshowninthefollowingtable(notethatH0isthesameasthefundamental
frequencyandthatNrepresentstheNthdataset).

Theory of Operation
TheBDSCalCartisareal‐timeRFmeasurementsystemthatconsistsofasensor,receiverandaload.Thesensor
simultaneouslymeasuresvoltageandcurrent(bothmagnitudeandphaseofeach)andsendsthedatatothe
receiver.TheBDSCalCartiscalibratedasasystemandthecomponentsarenotinterchangeable.
Thereceiverprocessesthesensordataandpassesthedatatothelaptop.ThereceiverconsistsofRFinput
conditioningcircuits,A/Dconverters,ahigh‐speedsignalprocessor,andinput/outputconnectors.See
Figure2 .
TheA/DconvertersconverttheanalogRFsignaltodigitalinformationforprocessing;thehigh‐speedsignal
processorconvertsthesignalfromthetimedomaintothefrequencydomainwhilemaintainingthecorrectphase
relationshipofeachharmonictoitsfundamentalfrequency.
TheoutputofthereceivercontainsinformationabouttheRFincludinguptothreefundamentalfrequencies
(amplitudeofbothvoltageandcurrentandtheirphaseforeachfundamentalfrequency)andupto10overtonesfor
eachfundamentalfrequency(amplitudeofbothvoltageandcurrentandtheirphaseforeachharmonic,andalso
thephaserelationshipofeachharmonictothevoltagecomponentofitsspecificfundamentalfrequency).Withthis
dataset(voltage,current,andphase),power(

)andimpedance(

)canbedetermined
foreachfundamentalandharmonicfrequency.
Userscanchoosenumberoffundamentalfrequencies(uptothree)andassociatedharmonics(upto10foreach
fundamentalfrequency)thatareacquiredandprocessed.Choosingasmallnumberoffundamentalandharmonic
frequenciesreducesthecomputingtimeand,therefore,providesoutputdatafasterthanchoosingalargernumber
offundamentalandharmonicfrequencies.See

Unpacking and Inspection
1. Carefullyinspectshippingcontainerforsignsofdamage.
Iftheshippingcontainerisdamaged,donotunpacktheunit.Immediatelynotifytheshippingcarrierand
BirdTechn ologies.
Iftheshippingcontainerisnotdamaged,unpacktheunit.Saveshippingmaterialsforrepackaging.

Cal Cart Setup
Setupconsistsofthreebasicsteps:movingtheCalCartintoposition,installingtheventplugs,andconnectingRF
line.Thesestepsareexplainedinmoredetailbelow.
1. Removetheshippingplugsfromtheload.Theshippingandventplugsareshownin Figure1onpage2 .
2. Installtheventplugsintheload.
3. ConnecttheCalCarttotheRFsource,use50ohmcoaxialcablesuitableforthefrequencyandpowerlevelof
operation.Useaconnectorwhichwillmatewiththecart’sexposedRFconnector.
WARNING
Donotattempttoliftthecartbythehandle.
WARNING
Allventplugsmustbeinstalledontheloadatalltimeswhentheunitisoperating
orcooling.Failuretodosocouldresultinanexplosionorsevereburns.
WARNING

Normal Operation
After setting up the Bird Cal Cart:
Note: TheACpowersupplyrequiredis115/230V@50/60Hz,1ö.TheunitisequippedwithanIEC320
“cold”(65°C)ACinlet.
1. ConnecttheunittotheACline.
2. Poweronthelaptop.
Note: Receiverbootupprocessmaytakeaslongas90seconds.Indicatorsshouldilluminategreen
afterasuccessfulbootup.
3. Verifythestatusindicatorsilluminate(green)onthereceiver.Iftheindicatorsarenotallgreen see
"Troubleshooting"onpage28 .
4. LaunchtheBDSGUIApplication.

Establish a Connection to the Receiver
TheBDSGUIonthelaptopcommunicateswiththereceiveroverEthernet.
1. CheckStatusLEDsontheBDSCalCartreceivertoverifybootupiscomplete.
Note: Receiverbootupprocessmaytakeaslongas90seconds.Indicatorsshouldilluminategreen
afterasuccessfulbootup.
Note: ThefourstatusLED’sonthefrontpanelwillallturngreenwhenthereceiverisready(GGGG).
Anyotherpatternindicatesapossiblesystemfailure,see
"StatusLEDs"onpage30 .
2. TheBDSGUIshouldautomaticallyconnecttothereceiver,ifitdoesnotperformthefollowingsteps:
a. UsingtheBDSGUI,Select“Connection‐>New…”fromthemainmenu.
b. EnterthefollowingIPaddressofport1inthe“Address:”field:192.168.0.151.
c. Clickthe“Connect”button.
Note: “CONNECTED”shouldbedisplayedintheleft‐mostindicatorfieldofthemainstatusbaratthe
bottomoftheapplicationwindow.
Note: TheBDSGUIwillsaveyourconnectionsettingsasdefaults.Ifdisconnectedfromthereceiver,a
connectioncanbereestablishedbyeitherclickingthe“Connection”icon,using“Connection‐>Open”,or
simplybystartingadataacquisition.ThisalsoworksonsubsequentlaunchesoftheBDSGUI
application.
3. SetuptheBDSGUItoprocesssysteminformation.See "BDSGUIApplicationSetup"onpage12
Shutdown
1. TurnoffRFpoweratthesource.
2. ClosetheBDSGUIapplication.
Note: Forblower‐equippedloads,waitapproximately15minutesorwaitforthefanstostoprunning.
Thiswillallowtheloadtocool.
3. Poweroffthelaptop.
4. DisconnecttheACline.

Chapter 4 BDS Graphical User Interface Description
Overview
TheBDSGUIisusedtoconfigurethereceiverandobtainmeasurementdatafromthesystem.
TherearetwosamplingresolutionsforStandardTrackingoperatingmode:8‐bit,1Gsample/second,and12‐bit,
200Msample/second.
The8‐bitsamplingmodehasatrackingrangeof301kHz‐100MHzattheexpenseofnarrowerdynamic
rangeandlessrepeatabilityascomparedto12‐bitmode.
