Chapter 1 Introduction
Calibratedcouplingportsandaccuratepowermeasurementcombinedinthe
sameunitprovidesforeasyuseandaccuratereadings.TheTPMisthefirstinline
powermonitorthatcanbecalibratedin‐lineandonsiteminimizingdowntime
andoptimizingon‐airtime.Inaddition,asimplifiedinterfaceallowsforahigh
levelofcustomizationandintegration.
Purpose and Function
TheTPMisusedtomeasurepowersignalsinbroadcastsystems.Itisused
directlyinlinewiththesystembeingtested.It’soutputprovidesalinearDC
voltageoutputfrom0to4voltsallowingforawidevarietyofinterfaceoptions.
It’sin‐linecalibrationcapabilityallowsforgreateraccuracyinasingle
application(withanaccuratepowerreference)anditsintegratednon‐
directionalcouplerallowsforsignalanalysisinminimalspacerequirements.Itis
availablein7/8 ”, 15/8 ”, and31/8”,50ohmlinesforFM,VHF,andUHFbroadcast
frequencies.
WhencombinedwithaBirdmodel3140A4or3140A8TransmitPowerMeter
(TPM)display,acompleteadjustmentsystemisachieved.Thedisplaysuppliesa
visualindicationofForwardandReflectedpowerbeingsampledbytheinline
TPM.MultipleTPM’scanbeselected(onlyoneperchannelsetting)togivethe
operatoranoverallconditionofthetransmittersystem.

Installing the TPM
TheTPMhastwoRFconnectors(SourceandLoad)thatconnecttothe
transmissionline,threetestportconnectorsthataretypeNfemaleconnectors
(Forward,Reflected,andTest ),andonenine‐pinsub‐miniaturecommunication
connector(DB‐9Male).
1. Dothefollowing:
ConnecttheRFconnectorlabeledSourcetothetransmittersideofthe
transmissionline.
ConnecttheRFconnectorlabeledLoadtotheantennaorloadsideof
thetransmissionline.
UseanappropriatecouplingkittosecuretheTPMinplace.
2. ConnecttheDB‐9connectortoasinglechannelonModel3140Apower
meterpanel,ortoanalternateappropriatepowersupplyandvoltmeters
thatwillindicatetheforwardandreflectedpower.

4. LabelwhatTPMisattachedtowhichchannelintheswitchnotationareaon
thefrontofthepanel.

Everycalibrationprocedurewillfinishbyprovidingatableofvoltagesthat
correspondtopowerlevelsatthecalibrationfrequency(f0).Itwillbeuptothe
usertousethosevoltagestogenerateanequationorfillinalookuptableon
whatevertheychoosetouseasanoutput.
Zero Calibrating
Note: ThisprocedurecanbeperformedanytimetheRFisoffand
theTPMison.ThereisnoneedtocyclepoweragainontheTPM.
1. Dooneofthefollowing:
Locatepin9ontheTPM’sDB9connectorandshortittoground.
Ifconnectedtoadisplaypanel,pressthezerocalibrationswitch.Refer
toFigure4forZeroCalibrationSwitchlocation.
Note: ZerocalibratewillsetboththeFWDandRFLatthesame
time.

CalibratetheTPMonthetransmitteritismonitoring.Alsoareferencepower
meterisneededtomeasuretheoutputofthetestportontheTPM(model
7006A250).Thiscalibrationcanbeperformedwhiletransmittingonair(forward
only)orintoadummyload.CouplingcalibrationdatafortheTPMisalso
needed.
Byusingseveraldifferentpowerlevels,anequationorlookuptablecanbe
generatedforthevoltageoutputoftheTPMasafunctionofpowerlevelatthe
frequencyofcalibration.

4. ApplyRFpower.

Active Calibration
TheactivemethodwillrecalibratetheTPMcompletely.Thisprocedurewillvoid
thecalibrationandaccuracyspecificationsfortheunit.Theaccuracywillbe
basedontheaccuracyofthereferencepowermeterusedforthisprocedure.In
additiontotheequipmentneededfortheactivecalibration,aBird6A340‐ADJ
PotentiometerAdjustmentTooltoadjustthepotentiometersontheTPMisalso
needed.
Setthetransmitter’sRFoutputtoadesiredpowerlevelusingthereference
meteronthetestportandthetestportcalibrationdata.Then,usingaBird
6A340‐ADJPotentiometerAdjustmentTool,turnthepotentiometersuntilthe
desiredvoltageoutputisreached.Extradatapointscanbetakenatdifferent
powerlevelstoconfirmthelinearityandgeneratealookuptabletodrivethe
restofthepowerlevels.
Thebenefitofthiscalibrationmethodisthatthecustomercansettheoutput
voltagetheywanttodrivetheirexternalmeter.Withtheothercalibration
methods,thecustomersimplyusesTPMoutputvoltagesassetatthefactory.

6. Enterthecalibrationfactorintothecalibrationstandard’soffsetfunction.
7. BreakthesealovertheFwdCalhole.
8. Adjustthepotentiometermanuallyuntilthevoltageissuchthatthe
calibrationstandardreadsfullscalepower=4.00V.
Example:Ifthepowerisexactly50%offullscale,adjustthepotentiometertoget
V=2.00V.
