Intended use
Your Black & Decker cordless hand-held saw has been
designed for sawing wood and sheet metal. This tool is
intended for consumer use only.

1. Work area safety
a. Keep work areaclean and well lit. Clutteredanddark
areasinviteaccidents.
b. Do notoperate power toolsin explosiveatmospheres,
such as inthe presence of flammable liquids, gasesor
dust.Powertoolscreatesparkswhichmayignitethedustor
fumes.
c. Keep childrenand bystanders away while operating a
powertool.Distractionscan causeyoutolose control.
2. Electrical safety
a. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify
the plug inany way. Do not use anyadapter plugs with
earthed (grounded) powertools. Unmodifiedplugsand
matchingoutletswillreducerisk ofelectricshock.
b. Avoidbody contact withearthed or grounded surfaces
suchaspipes,radiators,rangesandrefrigerators.There
isanincreasedriskofelectricshockifyourbodyisearthedor
grounded.
c. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
Waterenteringapower tool will increase theriskofelectric
shock.
d. Donot abusethe cord.Neverusethecordforcarrying,
pulling or unplugging thepower tool. Keep cordaway
fromheat,oil,sharpedgesormovingparts.Damagedor
entangledcordsincreasetheriskofelectricshock.
e. Whenoperatinga power tool outdoors, use an
extension cordsuitable foroutdoor use.Useof acord
suitableforoutdooruse reducestheriskofelectricshock.
f. If operating a power tool in a damp location is
unavoidable, use aresidual current device (RCD)
protectedsupply.Use of anRCD reducestheriskof

3. Personal safety
a. Stay alert, watch what youare doing anduse common
sensewhenoperatingapowertool.Donotuseapower
tool whileyou are tiredor under theinfluence of drugs,
alcoholor medication. Amomentof inattentionwhile
operatingpower toolsmayresultinseriouspersonalinjury.
b. Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye
protection.Protectiveequipmentsuchasdustmask,non-
skidsafetyshoes,hardhat,orhearingprotectionusedfor
appropriateconditions will reducepersonalinjuries.
c. Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switchis in
theoff-positionbeforeconnectingtopowersourceand/
orbatterypack,pickingupor carryingthe tool.Carrying
powertoolswithyourfingerontheswitchor energising
powertoolsthathavethe switchoninvitesaccidents.
d. Removeanyadjustingkeyorwrenchbeforeturningthe
powertool on. Awrenchorakeyleftattachedto a rotating
partof thepowertoolmayresultinpersonalinjury.
e. Donotoverreach.Keepproperfootingandbalanceatall
times. Thisenablesbettercontrolofthepower tool in
unexpectedsituations.
f. Dressproperly. Donot wearlooseclothing orjewellery.
Keep your hair, clothing and glovesaway from moving

g. Ifdevices are providedfor the connectionof dust
extraction and collection facilities,ensure these are
connected and properly used. Useof thesedevicescan

4. Power tool use and care
a. Donot force the power tool. Use the correctpower tool
foryour application.Thecorrectpowertoolwilldothejob
betterandsaferat therateforwhichitwasdesigned.
b. Do not use the powertool if the switch doesnot turn it
onandoff.Anypowertoolthatcannotbecontrolledwiththe
switchis dangerousandmustbe repaired.
c. Disconnect theplug from the power source and/or the
battery packfrom the powertool beforemaking any
adjustments, changing accessories,or storing power
tools.Suchpreventivesafety measuresreducetheriskof
startingthe power toolaccidentally.
d. Storeidle powertoolsout of the reachof childrenand
do not allowpersons unfamiliar with the power toolor
theseinstructionstooperatethepowertool.Powertools
aredangerousinthehandsof untrainedusers.
e. Maintainpower tools.Check for misalignmentor
binding of moving parts, breakage of partsand any
other conditionthat may affect the powertools
operation. Ifdamaged, have the powertool repaired
before use. Manyaccidentsare causedbypoorly
maintainedpowertools.

f. Keep cuttingtools sharp and clean. Properlymaintained
cuttingtoolswithsharpcuttingedges arelesslikelytobind
andare easiertocontrol.
g. Use thepower tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in
accordancewiththeseinstructions,takingintoaccount
the workingconditionsand the work tobe performed.
Useof thepowertoolforoperationsdifferentfromthose
intendedcouldresultinahazardoussituation.
5. Battery tool use and care
a. Recharge only with the charger specified by the
manufacturer. Achargerthatissuitableforonetypeof
battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with
another battery pack.
b. Use power tools only with specifically designated
battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may
create a risk of injury and fire.
c. When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from
other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys,
nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can
make a connection from one terminal to another.
Shorting the battery terminals together may cause
burns or a fire.
d. Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected
from the battery; avoid contact. If contact
accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid
contactseyes,additionallyseekmedicalhelp.Liquid
ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.
6. Service
a. Haveyourpower tool servicedby a qualified repair
person usingonly identical replacement parts.Thiswill
makesurethatthe safetyofthe powertoolismaintained.
Additional power tool safety warnings
XHold the tool by the insulated gripping surfaces when
performing an operation where the cutting tool may
contact hidden wiring or its own cord.Contact witha
"live"wire will make exposed metal parts ofthe tool"live"
andshock theoperator.
XUse clamps or another practical way to secure and
supporttheworkpieceto astableplatform.Holdingthe
work by hand or against your body leaves it unstable and
maylead toloss ofcontrol.
XKeep hands away from cutting area. Never reach
underneath thework pieceany reason.Do notinsert
fingersor thumb into the vicinity ofthe reciprocating blade
andblade clamp.
XKeep blades sharp.Dull ordamaged bladesmay cause
thesaw toswerve orstall under pressure. Always use the
appropriatetype ofsaw bladefor theworkpiece material
andtype ofcut.
XWhencutting pipe or conduit, make sure that they are free
fromwater, electricalwiring, etc.
XDo not touchthe workpiece or theblade immediatelyafter
operatingthe tool.They canbecome veryhot.
XBeaware ofhidden hazards,before cuttinginto walls,
floorsor ceilings, checkforthelocationofwiringandpipes.
XThe bladewill continueto move afterreleasing theswitch.
Alwaysswitch the tool off and wait for thesaw bladeto
cometo acomplete standstill before putting the tooldown.
Warning! Contact with,or inhalation of dusts arisingfrom
cuttingapplications may endangerthe health ofthe operator
andpossible bystanders. Wear a dust maskspecifically
designedforprotectionagainstdustandfumesandensurethat
personswithin orentering thework area are also protected.

capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge,
unless they have been given supervision or instruction
concerning use of the appliance by a person

Vibration
The declared vibration emission values stated in the
technical data and the declaration of conformity have been
measured in accordance with a standard test method
provided by EN 60745 and may be used for comparing one
toolwithanother.Thedeclaredvibrationemissionvaluemay
also be used in a preliminary assessment of exposure.
Warning! The vibrationemission value duringactual use of
thepowertool candiffer fromthedeclaredvalue depending
onthewaysinwhichthetoolisused.Thevibrationlevelmay

When assessing vibration exposure to determine safety
measures required by 2002/44/EC to protect persons
regularlyusing powertoolsinemployment, an estimation of
vibrationexposureshould consider, the actual conditions of
useandthewaythetoolisused,includingtakingaccountof
all parts of the operating cycle such as the times when the
tool is switched off and when it is running idle in addition to
the trigger time.

Batteries
XNever attempt to open for any reason.
XDo not expose the battery to water.
XDo not store in locations where the temperature may
exceed 40 °C.
XCharge only at ambient temperatures between 10 °C
and 40 °C.
XCharge only using the chargers provided with the tool.
XWhen disposing of batteries, follow the instructions
given in the section "Protecting the environment".
Chargers
XUse your Black & Decker charger only to charge the
batterywithwhichitwassupplied.Otherbatteriescould
burst, causing personal injury and damage.
XNever attempt to charge non-rechargeable batteries.
XHave defective cords replaced immediately.
XDo not expose the charger to water.
XDo not open the charger.
XDo not probe the charger.
Electrical safety
This tool is double insulated; therefore no earth
wire is required. Always check that the power
supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating
plate.
XIfthesupplycordisdamaged,itmustbereplacedbythe
manufacturer or an authorised Black & Decker Service
Centre in order to avoid a hazard.

Assembly
Installing the battery pack (fig. A)
Warning! Makecertainthatthelock-offbuttonisengagedto
prevent switch actuation before removing or installing
battery.
XInsertthemetalterminalendofthebatterypack(7)into
thebatterycompartmentuntilyouhearthelockclickinto
place and the VPXTM logo shows through the window.
Warning! The battery will only fit one way, do not force it. If
thebatterydoes notfit,removeitandputitintheotherway.
Removing the battery pack:
XPress the release button (6) and firmly pull the battery
pack out of the battery compartment.
Charging the batteries (fig. B)
Warning! Do not charge the battery at ambient
temperatures below 10 °C or above 40 °C.
Note: The charger will not charge a battery pack if the cell
temperature is below approximately 0° C or above 60° C.
The battery pack should be left in the charger and the
charger will begin to charge automatically when the cell
temperature warms up or cools down.
XPlug in the charger (8) and switch on at the mains.
XInsert the battery pack (7) into the charger. Make sure
that the battery pack is fully seated in the charger (8).
XThe charging indicator (9) will flash continuously
(slowly).
XLeave the battery to charge for at least 5 to 6 hours.
XThecharge is completewhenthechargingindicator(9)
lights continuously
XThechargerandthebatterypackcanbeleftconnected
indefinitelywith the LED illuminated. The LED will
change to flashing (charging) state, as the charger
occasionally “tops off“ the battery charge.
Warning! Toreduce theriskof injury,the user must
readthe instruction manual.
The charger is intended for indoor use only.
Read the instruction manual before use.
The charger automatically shuts off if the
ambient temperature becomes too high.As
soon as the ambient temperature has cooled
down, the charger will resume operating.
Charge only at ambient temperatures between
10 °C and 40 °C.

XThe charging indicator (9) will be lit as long as the
battery pack is connected to the plugged-in charger.
XCharge discharged batteries within 1 week. Battery life
willbe greatlydiminishedifstored inadischargedstate.
Charge indicators
If the charger detects a problem with a battery pack, the
charge indicator (9) will flash at a fast rate.
XIf this occurs, re-insert the battery pack (7).
XIftheproblempersists,putadifferentbatterypackinthe
charger to determine if the charger is OK.
XIfthenewpackchargescorrectly,thentheoriginalpack
is defective and should be returned to a service centre
for recycling.
XIfthenewbatterypackgivesthesameindicationasthe
original, take the charger to be tested at an authorized
service centre.
Note:Itmaytakeaslongasfifteenminutestodeterminethat
the pack is defective.
If the battery pack is too hot or too cold, the LED will
alternately blink fast and slow, one flash at each speed and
repeat.
Daisy chain (fig. C)
Black & Decker single and dual port VPX battery chargers
canbeelectrically connected in anyorderup to amaximum
of 4 chargers. Each charger has a power-in cord (10) which
plugs into the electrical outlet and a power-out cord (11)
which plugs into the next charger.
To connect chargers in a daisy chain:
XPlug the power-in cord (10) into an electrical outlet.
XRemove the power-in cord from the next charger and
plug in the power-out cord (11) from the charger that is
now plugged into the outlet.
XRepeat this process for the remaining chargers.
Chargers that are daisy chained together operate
independently as though each one was plugged into a
separate outlet,therefore a battery can be removed from
anywhere along the daisy chain without affecting the other
chargers.
Use
Switching on and off (fig. D)
Thetoolisequippedwithaswitchlock-offfeaturetoprevent
unintentional operation.
XTooperatethetool,slidetheswitchlock-offbutton(1)to
the back and hold it as you pull the on/offtrigger
switch (2).
XWhen the tool is running, release the switch lock-off
button (1). The tool will continue to run while the on/off
trigger switch (2) is pressed.
XToturnthetooloff,releasethe on/offtriggerswitch(2).
There is no provision for locking the tool in the on
position.
XHoldthesawfirmlywithoneorbothhandswhilecutting.
Whenever possible, the saw shoe must be held firmly
againstthematerialbeing cut.Thiswillpreventthesaw
fromjumping orvibratingandminimizebladebreakage.
Fitting the saw blade (fig. E)
Yoursaw acceptsboth T-shankanduniversalshankjigsaw
blades. 1 mm or thicker blade recommended.
Warning! Recently used blades may be hot.
XHoldthe sawblade (5)securely. Ifthe sawblade isfitted
witha tooth protector, leave itattached while fittingthe
blade.
XPush down on the blade clamp release lever(3)to
releasethe bladeclamping mechanism.
XInsertthe shankof thesaw blade(5) into the blade holder
asfar as itwill go.
XReleasethe bladeclamp lever (3) to lock the blade
clamping mechanism.
XRemovethe tooth protector, if fitted.
To remove a blade from the saw:
XPushdownonthebladeclampreleaselever(3)toitsfull
open position.
XRemove the blade (5).
XRelease the blade clamp release lever (3).
Sawing
XLet the blade runfreely for a few secondsbefore starting
thecut.
XApplyonly a gentle pressure to the tool whileperforming
thecut.
XIfpossible, workwith theshoe (4)pressed against the
workpiece.This willimprove tool control and reduce tool
vibration,as wellas preventthe blade from being
damaged.
XCutonly withsharp blades;they cut cleaner,faster and
put less strain on the motor while cutting.
XFor longer blade life, use bi-metal blades. Theyare
more flexible and less prone to breaking.
Hints for optimum use
Sawing wood
Warning! Useextracautionwhencuttingoverheadandpay
particular attention to overhead wires which may be hidden
fromview. Anticipatethepathof falling branchesanddebris
ahead of time.

Warning! Inspect the work site for hidden gas pipes, water
pipes,orelectricalwiresbeforemakingblindor plungecuts.
Failure to do so may result in explosion, property damage,
electric shock, and/or serious personal injury.
XClampthe workpiecesecurely andremove all nails and
metalobjects.Holding thework by hand or against your
body leaves it unstable and may lead to loss of control.
XPlace the shoe firmly againstthe work to be cut.
XLet the blade run freely for a fewseconds beforestarting
thecut.
XWhenever possible, workwiththeshoe(4) pressed
againstthe workpiece. This willimprovetool control and
reduce tool vibration, aswell as prevent the blade from
beingdamaged.
Sawing metal
Be aware that sawing metal takes much more time than
sawing wood.
XUseasawbladesuitableforsawingmetal.Useafine-tooth
sawblade forferrous metals and a coarser saw blade for
non-ferrousmetals.
XWhencuttingthinsheetmetal,clampapieceofscrapwood
tothe backsurface ofthe workpieceand cutthrough this
sandwich.
XSpreada filmof oilalong the intended lineof cut.
XWhen cutting metal piping, do not cut directly through
thepipeasyouwouldsawawoodendowel.Instead,cut
around the circumference of the pipe to avoid pinching
the blade. Only one section of the blade should be in
contact with the pipe.
Pocket cutting - wood only
Pocket cutting is used to cut a hole in a piece of material
without cutting from the side.
XMeasure and mark therequired pocket cut.
XFita sawblade suitablefor pocket cutting.
XRestthe shoe(4) on the workpiecein sucha positionthat
theblade formsan appropriate angle for the pocketcut.
XSwitch on the tool andslowly feedthe bladeinto the
workpiece.Make sure that theshoe (4) remainsin contact
withthe workpiece at all times.
Pruning
Warning! Donotuse thetool whilein a tree, on aladder oron
anyother unstable surface. Be aware ofwhere the branch will
fall.
XCutdownward and awayfrom your body.
XMakethe cutclose to themain branch or treebody.
Maintenance
YourBlack&Deckertoolhasbeendesignedtooperateover
a long period of time with a minimum of maintenance.
Continuoussatisfactoryoperationdependsuponpropertool
care and regular cleaning.
XRegularly clean the ventilationslots in your tool using a
soft brush or dry cloth.
XRegularly clean the motor housing using a damp cloth.
Do not use any abrasive or solvent-based cleaner.
Never let any liquid get inside the tool and never
immerse any part of the tool into liquid.
Mains plug replacement (U.K. & Ireland only)
If a new mains plug needs to be fitted:
XSafely dispose of the old plug.
XConnect the brown lead to the live terminal in the new
plug.
XConnect the blue lead to the neutral terminal.
Warning! Noconnectionistobemadetotheearthterminal.
Follow the fitting instructions supplied with good quality
plugs. Recommended fuse: 5 A.

Protecting the environment
Separate collection. This product must not be
disposed of with normal household waste.
Should you find one day that your Black & Decker product
needsreplacement,or if itis of nofurtheruse to you,donot
dispose of it with household waste. Make this product
available for separate collection.
Separatecollectionofusedproductsandpackaging
allowsmaterialsto be recycledandusedagain.Re-
use of recycled materials helps prevent
environmental pollution and reduces the demand
for raw materials.
Local regulations may provide for separate collection of
electrical products from the household, at municipal waste
sites or by the retailer when you purchase a new product.

Black & Decker batteries can be recharged many
times. At the endof theiruseful life, discardbatteries
with due care for our environment:
XRun the battery down completely, then remove it from
the tool.
XLithium Ion batteries are recyclable. Take them to any
authorised repair agent or a local recycling station.
