2. Introduction
The 16- or 32-Port 10/100 Physical Layer Ethernet Switch manages connections
within Ethernet and Fast Ethernet networks, providing easy-to-use, point-to-point
connectivity. The switch complies with 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX standards.
Using the switch for remote configuration of Ethernet connections eliminates
direct manipulation of Ethernet patch cords and provides the ultimate in network
connection flexibility. One RS-232 serial port and a 10BASE-T Ethernet TCP/IP
LAN port provide remote control of the switch.
The switch’s protocol-independent electronic switching matrix allows any of the
16 or 32 independent Ethernet ports to be “patched” to any other port, providing
full-speed, bi-directional Ethernet connectivity with virtually zero latency. 16 or 32
user-defined preset patching configurations may be instantly recalled either via the
serial or LAN port. The Physical Layer Ethernet Switch fully supports all Ethernet
and Fast Ethernet operational modes, including half-duplex, full duplex, and
auto-negotiation.
The switch is completely transparent to the Ethernet devices which are connected
to it. Control software is included to configure port-to-port connections. No
additional software or drivers are required for the switch’s installation or
operation.
An auto-ranging, universal power supply allows operation with AC input voltages
between 90 and 260 VAC.

3. Installation
3.1 What the Package Includes
• (1) 16- or 32-Port 10/100 Physical Layer Ethernet Switch
• (1) IEC-320 power cord
• (1) 10-ft. (3-m) DB9 male to DB9 female RS-232 cable
• (1) DB9 male to DB25 female RS-232 adapter
• (2) Rackmounting brackets with (4) 12-24 screws
• (4) bottom feet
• (1) CD-ROM containing control software and this users’ manual

3.2 Switch Location
When deciding where to place the switch, make sure that the dual fans and
ventilation slots on the sides of the unit obtain adequate airflow. Do not place the
switch on any devices that generate excessive heat.
3.3 AC Line Voltage
The switch can be externally connected to any AC input voltage between 90 and
260 volts with a frequency range of 47 to 63 Hz. The switch consumes
approximately 85 watts of power. Unless otherwise specified, the switch will be
shipped with a North American-style IEC power cord. For other power cords, call
Black Box at 724-746-5500.

3.4 Rackmount Installation
You can install the switch in a standard 19-inch (EIA unit) rack. The 16-port switch
occupies 1 rack unit of vertical space (1.75 inches [4.4 cm]), while the 32-port
switch occupies 2 rack units of vertical space (3.5 inches [8.9 cm]).
To install the switch:
Attach one of the two mounting brackets to each side of the switch using the screws
provided. Position the switch on the rack, aligning the mounting bracket holes
with the rack holes. Use 5⁄8-inch 12-24 screws (included) to install it in the rack.
Rackmount considerations:
1. For proper operation, make sure that the maximum recommended operating
ambient temperature of 131°F (55°C) is not exceeded.
2. If the switch is installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating
ambient temperature of the rack environment may be greater than room
ambient. Install the rack in an environment compatible with the switch’s
maximum rated operating temperature.
3. For safe operation, do not compromise the amount of airflow required.
4. Mounting the switch in a rack should not cause a hazardous condition
because of uneven mechanical loading.
5. Do not overload the electrical circuit to which the switch will be installed.
6. Maintain reliable earthing of rackmount equipment. Pay close attention to
power strips.
After you install the switch in the rack, connect the Ethernet ports as described in
Section 3.5, then the serial or LAN port interface as described in Sections 3.6 and
3.7. If desired, cascade multiple 32-port switches as described in Section 3.8.

3.5 Connecting the Ethernet Ports
The switch has 16 or 32 8-conductor RJ-45 connectors for connection to 10BASE-T
Ethernet or 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet devices. These RJ-45 connectors are wired
the same as an Ethernet hub, transmitting on pins 3 and 6 and receiving on pins 1
and 2. This allows standard Ethernet devices such as PCs (which transmit on pins 1
and 2 and receive on pins 3 and 6) to be connected to the switch with standard
“straight” network cables.
When connecting one of the switch’s ports directly to an Ethernet hub or network
switch, you’ll need to use a crossover cable, which swaps the transmit and receive
wire pairs as shown in Table 3-1.

3.6 Serial Port Interface
Serial port COM1 is an RS-232 DB9 female connector that’s wired so it can be
connected directly to a PC-compatible serial port with a standard “straight” serial
cable (DB9 serial cable with a male connector on one end and a female connector
on the other end, wired pin 1 to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, etc.), which is included. The
serial port can also be configured to operate as a separate communications port.

3.7 LAN Interface
You can remotely control the switch via the TCP/IP LAN control port (RJ-45
connector). Simply connect the LAN ports of your computer and switch to an
Ethernet hub on your network, as shown in Figure 3-2.

3.8 Connecting Multiple 32-Port Physical Layer Switches
Up to 32 switches can be controlled by a single RS-232 serial interface or LAN
control port. To operate in this configuration, set the serial ports to operate in
daisychain mode and assign a unique device number to each switch. (To select the
daisychain mode, go to the Configuration menu, Communications tab, and click
on the Serial/LAN Port, Daisychain Mode button.) The 32-port switches have
in/out ports for cascading. However, the 16-port switches have only an in port. You
can cascade one 16-port switch at the end of a daisychain of three 32-port switches
as shown in Figure 3-3. Or, control four 32-port switches via one LAN port
(Figure 3-4).

4. Operation
Once you have installed the 10/100 Physical Layer Ethernet Switch, you are ready
to operate it. First, notice where the AC power switch, keypad, and indicators are
located on the switch. If you have the 32-port model, also notice its LCD display.
Next, follow the instructions in Sections 4.1 through 4.3 to operate the switch.
Finally, read Sections 4.4 and 4.5 for instructions on how to configure the switch.
4.1 AC Power Switch
The first thing you must do is power on the switch. The power switch is located on
the rear panel. Setting the switch to the “1” position applies power to the unit.
4.2 Keypad, Indicators, and LCD Display
Next, make yourself familiar with the keypad and indicators on the switch. The
front panel indicates switch operation and status. If you have the 32-port model,
also review Section 4.3 for how to use its LCD display.
4.2.1 K

The keypad enables menu selection and parameter setup for the switch.

4.2.2 I NDICATORS
LED indicators tell you switch status at a glance.

Indicator Function
Power Lights when power is on.
Activity Lights when a command has been received by the serial or
LAN port.
Alarm A visual and audible alarm indicates either that the power
supply failed or that the internal temperature exceeds the
specified temperature limit. To silence the audible alarm,
press the front-panel Menu key. The Alarm LED will remain lit
until the alarm condition is corrected.
Signal Detect A green LED on each Ethernet port indicates the presence of
a signal.
LAN Status The green LED to the left of the LAN control port lights
when the link is active (the LAN port is plugged into
and communicating with an Ethernet hub).
The yellow LED lights when the LAN interface is waiting
for a software TCP/IP connection to be established.
When the connection is made, the yellow LED blinks,
and continues to blink until the connection is
terminated.

4.2.3 LCD D ISPLAY (32-P ORT S WITCH O NLY )
The LCD display indicates the available switch selection parameters. Scroll through
the main menu (only two lines are visible at any time) as shown in Figure 4-3.

Throughout this manual (and in the control software you received), the
vendor code ACI-2050 refers to the SW595A or SW596A. The vendor
code ACI-2050-C16 refers to the SW595A. The vendor code ACI-2050-
C32 refers to the SW596A.
4.3 LCD Display Control Menus (32-Port Switch Only)
The 32-port switch features an LCD display on its front panel. Following is a list of
the available commands. Use these commands to control your switch via the LCD.
