of19,000feet per minute,primarily to reduce the hazardfromthrownobjects.
Rotarylawnmowermanufacturersselect the governed top speed ofthe enginebased onthe length and design ofthe cutter
blade and design of othermowerparts.
Allrotarylawnmowersshould be checked for conformance totheUSA StandardSafetySpecifications for PowerLawnMowers
onblade tip speed, ifthe engine is repaired or replaced, orif mowerparts are changed.
Dirt and grassclippings, or otherdebris, in coolingfins or governorparts can affectenginespeed. See cleaninginstruc-
tions in Section 3. CAUTION
TOPREVENTACCIDENTALSTARTINGalwaysremove the sparkplugbeforeworking onthe engine or equipmentdriven bythe
engine or removecablefromsparkplug and insertterminal in V-notch in cylinderheadcover.

DO NOT FILLGASOLINETANKWHILEENGINE IS RUNNING.Spillinggasoline ona hot engine may cause a fire or explosion.

SPECIAL LOW TEMPERATURESTARTIIMG PROCEDURE 1. Turnneedlevalve on carburetor, 1/8 turncounterclock-
wisefromnormalsummeradjustment.Note: If fueldrips outof carburetorwhiletrying to startengine, the engine
isoverchoked.Pullstarterseveraltimes or pushstarterbuttonwithchokeopen. 2.Be sure tousethe proper
weight ofoilfortheair temperatureexpected. 3. Disconnect all externalloads. Any V-beltdrivesmust bere-
moved or loosened so that the belts are standingstill for satisfactoryoperationbelowfreezing.Starter,motor
andbattery are designed to start the engineonly. 4. Keepbattery and enginewarm if possible. Ifitisnot
possible to keep the entireunitwarm,there isa big advantage in keeping the batterywarmuntil itis required
forstarting. A warmbatt ryhas muchmorestartingcapacitythan a coldbattery.

MjCHECK OIL LEVELbeforestartingengine and after
^every 5 hours of operation. Be sure oil level is main-
tained to FULLPOINT OF OVERFLOWING orto FULL
MARK on dipstick.
(T^CHANGEOIL afterfirst 5 hours of operation. There-
afterchange oil every 25 hours of operation.Remove
oildrainplug and drain oil whileengine is warm. Re-
placedrain plug. Removedipstick oroil fillerplug
andrefillwith newoilof propergrade.Replacedip-
stick or plug.
CLEAN AIR CLEANER and re-oilelementevery 25 hours
undernormalconditions.
1. Remove two screws and lift off complete air cleaner
assembly.
2. Removescreen and spacersfromfoamelement.
3.Removefoamelementfrom air cleanerbody.
4. A —Washfoamelement in kerosene or liquiddeter-
gent and water to removedirt.
B—Wrapfoam in cloth and squeeze dry.
C—Saturatefoam in engine oil. Squeeze to remove.
D-Assembleparts-fasten to carburetorwithscrew.
Whenassemblingmakecertain thelipofthe foamele-
mentextendsoveredge oftheair cleanerbody. The
foamelement lip willform a protective seal.

(T)CLEANCOOLINGSYSTEM - Grass,chaff or dirt may
clog theair coolingsystem,especiallyafterprolonged
servicecutting dry grasses. To avoidoverheating and
enginedamage,remove the blowerhousing and clean
theareashown.Thisshould bea regularmaintenance
operation.
(T^CLEAN FUELSYSTEM - Drain and cleanfueltank.
(T)CLEANSPARKPLUG - Clean and reset gapat.030"
every 100 hours of operation.
CAUTION: Blastcleaning of sparkplugs in machines
that use abrasivegrit isnot recommended.Sparkplugs
should be cleaned by scraping or wirebrushing and
washingwith a commercialsolvent or gasoline.

CARBURETORADJUSTMENTS
Minorcarburetoradjustment maybe required to com-
pensate for differences in fuel, temperature,altitude
and load.
ToAdjustCarburetorTurnneedlevalveclockwise
until it justcloses.Caution:Valve maybe damaged
byturning itintoofar.
Nowopenneedlevalve 1-1/8 turnscounterclockwise.
Closeidlevalve in samemanner and open 1-1/8 turns.
Thisinitialadjustmentwillpermit the engine tobe
started and warmed up prior to finaladjustment.
IDLESPEED
ADJUSTINGSCREW
NEEDLEVALVE
FinalAdjustmentTurnneedlevalve in untilenginemisses(leanmixture).Thenturn itout pastsmoothoperat-
ingpointuntilenginerunsunevenly(richmixture). Now turnneedlevalve tothe mid-pointbetweenrich and lean
so the enginerunssmoothly.Holdthrottle at idleposition andset idlespeedadjustingscrewuntilfastidle is
obtained (1750RPM). Holdthrottle in idleposition and turnidlevalve in (lean) andout (rich)untilengineidles
smoothly.Thenresetidlespeedadjustingscrew so thatengineidles at1750RPM. Releasethrottle - engine
shouldacceleratewithouthesitation or sputtering. If enginedoes not accelerateproperly, the carburetorshould
bere-adjusted toa slightlyrichermixture.

CHOKE-A-MATICCARBURETORCONTROLS
ADJUSTMENT
Properchoke and stopswitchoperation is dependent
uponproperadjustment of remotecontrols onthe pow-
eredequipment.
ToCheckOperation of Choke-A-MaticControls;
a. Moveremotecontrollever to "Choke"position. The
carburetorchokeshould be closed.
b. Moveremotecontrol to "Stop"position.Governor
controllevershouldmakefullcontactwithstop
switch.
SPEEDCONTROLADJUSTMENTS
Thecorrectoperatingspeedrange is1800to 3600 RPM.
Idlespeed is1750RPM. There are severaltypes of
speedcontrols on theseengines.Select the control on
yourengine. To increaseenginespeedmovecontrol
indirection of arrow.
ToAdjust:
Placeremotecontrollever on equipment in FAST(high
speed)position.Loosencontrolcasingclampscrew
"C". Movecontrolcasing "A"and wireuntillever
"E" lines up withbottomedge of tang "F". Tighten
casingclampscrew "C".

STORAGEINSTRUCTIONS
Engines tobe storedover 30 daysshould be complete-
lydrained of fuel to prevent gum depositsforming on
essentialcarburetorparts,fuelfilter,fuellines and
tank.
a. Drainfueltankcompletely.
b. Operateengineuntilgasoline in carburetor is com-
pletelyconsumed.
c.Whileengine is stillwarm,drain oil fromcrankcase.
Refillwithfresh oil.
d. Removespark plug, pourlounce(2 or3 tablespoons)
ofSAE-30 oil intocylinder and crankslowly to dis-
tribute oil. Replacespark plug.
e.Cleandirt and chafffromcylinderheadfins and
blowerhousing. (See Section 3).
