Memory Storage 1
Even if there is a power failure, you will not
lose your menu settings because they are
stored permanently. Temporary settings,
such as Overseas Mode, will be lost, and you
may have to reenter the date and time.
Volume Settings
(MFC model only) 1
Ring Volume 1
You can choose a range of ring volume
levels, from High to Off.
While the machine is idle, press dor c
to adjust the volume level. The LCD displays
the current setting, and each key press will
change the volume to the next level.
You can also change the volume through the
menu by following the instructions below:

Beep Volume 1
When Beep is on, the machine will beep
when you press a key, make a mistake, or
after you send or receive a fax.
You can choose a range of sound volume
levels, from High to Off.

or Off.

Speaker Volume 1
You can choose a range of speaker volume
levels, from High to Off.

Automatic Daylight
Saving Time
(MFC model only) 1
You can set the machine to change
automatically for daylight saving time. It will
set itself forward one hour in the Spring and
backward one hour in the Fall. Make sure you
have set the correct date and time in the
Date&Time setting.
The factory setting is Off, so you will have to
turn on Automatic Daylight Saving Time as
follows.
aPress Menú (Menu), 0, 1, 2.
bPress aor bto choose On (or Off).
Press OK.
cPress Detener/Salir (Stop/Exit).

Sleep Mode 1
You can choose how long the machine must
be idle (up to 60 minutes) before it goes into
Sleep Mode. The timer will restart if any
operation is carried out on the machine.

3 Mins, 5 Mins, 10 Mins, 30 Mins
or 60 Mins.

The Auto Power Off feature will turn off the
machine after it has been in Sleep Mode for
the number of hours you set. When this
feature is Off, the machine will remain in
Sleep Mode and not turn itself off.
The default setting is Off.
To turn on the machine after the Auto Power
Off feature has turned it off, press Power
On/Off.
NOTE
(DCP-T500W and DCP-T700W)
The machine will not power off
automatically when:
• the machine is connected to a wireless
network
•WLAN Enable is set to On.

You can adjust the LCD contrast. If you are
having difficulty reading the LCD, try
changing the contrast setting.

The machine’s control panel has three
temporary mode keys: FAX,
ESCÁNER (SCAN) and COPIA (COPY).
You can change the amount of time the
machine takes after the last SCAN or COPY
operation before it returns to FAX mode. If
you choose Off, the machine stays in the
mode you used last.

TX Lock 2
TX Lock lets you prevent unauthorized
access to the machine.
While TX Lock is On, the following operations
are available:
Receiving faxes
PC-Fax Receive 1
(If PC-Fax Receive was already On)
1While the TX Lock feature is turned on, your machine
will receive faxes and store them in its memory.
Then, when TX Lock is turned off, the faxes will be
sent to your chosen PC.
While TX Lock is On, the following operations
are NOT available:

NOTE
If you enter the wrong password, the LCD
displays Wrong Password and stays
offline. The machine will stay in

Sending faxes using multiple
settings 3
When you send a fax, you can choose a
combination of settings, such as
Fax Resolution, Contrast,
Overseas Mode, and Real Time TX.
aLoad your document.
bPress (FAX).
cChoose a setting you want to change in
the Setup Send menu (Menú (Menu),
3, 2).
Press OK.
dChoose the option you want for the
setting.
Press OK.
eDo one of the following:
Press 1to change another setting.
Press 2when you have finished
choosing your settings. Go to
step f.
fEnter the fax number.
gPress Inicio Negro (Black Start).
NOTE
Some settings are temporary and the
machine returns to its default settings after
you send a fax.
Stop faxing 3
To stop faxing, press

Contrast 3
If your document is very light or very dark, you
may want to change the contrast. For most
documents, the factory setting Auto can be
used. Auto chooses the suitable contrast for
your document.
Choose Light when sending a light
document. Choose Dark when sending a
dark document.
aLoad your document.
bPress (FAX).
cPress Menú (Menu), 3, 2, 2.
dPress aor bto choose Auto, Light or
Dark.
Press OK.
ePress 2so you can continue sending
your fax.

machine will send the fax using the Auto

Changing the fax resolution 3
The quality of a fax can be improved by
changing the fax resolution. Resolution can
be changed for the next fax or for all faxes.
To change the fax resolution for the
next fax 3
aLoad your document.
bPress (FAX).
cPress Resolución fax
(Fax Resolution) then aor bto choose
the resolution.
Press OK.
dEnter the fax number.
ePress Inicio Negro (Black Start).

Sending a fax manually 3
Manual transmission lets you hear the
dialing, ringing and fax-receiving tones while
sending a fax.
NOTE
To send a multi-page fax, use the ADF.
aLoad your document.
bPress (FAX).
cTo listen for a dial tone, press
Teléfono (Hook).
dEnter the fax number.
eWhen you hear the fax tones, press
Inicio Negro (Black Start).
If you are using the scanner glass, press
1to send the fax.
Sending a fax at the end of a
conversation 3
At the end of a conversation, you can send a
fax to the other party before you both hang
up.
aAsk the other party to wait for fax tones
(beeps) and then to press the Start or
Send key before hanging up.
bLoad your document.
cPress (FAX).
dPress Inicio Negro (Black Start).
If you are using the scanner glass,
press 1to send a fax.
eReplace the handset of the external
phone.
Broadcasting 3
Broadcasting is automatically sending the
same fax message to more than one fax
number. You can include Groups, Speed Dial
numbers, and up to 50 manually dialed
numbers in the same broadcast.
After the broadcast is finished, a Broadcast
Report will be printed.
Before you begin the broadcast 3
Speed Dial numbers must be stored in the
machine's memory before they can be used
in a broadcast. (See Basic User’s Guide:
Storing Speed Dial numbers.)
Group numbers must also be stored in the
machine's memory before they can be used
in a broadcast. Group numbers include many
stored Speed Dial numbers for easier dialing.
(See Setting up Groups for Broadcasting
on page 19.)
How to broadcast a fax 3
aLoad your document.
bPress (FAX).
cEnter a fax number.
Press OK.
You can use either a Speed Dial, a
Group or a manually entered number
using the dial pad.
dRepeat step cuntil you have entered
all the fax numbers to be included in the
broadcast.

The machine starts scanning and
sending the document.
Faxing from the scanner glass
When the LCD asks you Next Page?,
do one of the following:
To send a single page, press 2(or
press Inicio Negro (Black Start)
again).
The machine starts sending the
document.
To send more than one page, press
1and place the next page on the
scanner glass.
Press OK.
The machine starts scanning the
page. (Repeat this step for each
page.)
After all the pages have been
scanned, press 2or
Inicio Negro (Black Start) to start.
NOTE
• If you did not use up any of the Speed Dial
locations for Groups, you can broadcast
faxes to as many as 90 different fax
numbers.
(See Setting up Groups for Broadcasting
on page 19.)
• The machine’s available memory will vary
depending on the types of jobs in the
memory and the fax numbers used for
broadcasting.
• If the Out of Memory message
appears, press Detener/Salir (Stop/Exit)
to cancel or Inicio Negro (Black Start) to
send the pages scanned so far.
Canceling a Broadcast in progress 3
aPress Menú (Menu), 3, 5.
The LCD displays the fax number or
name being dialed and the Broadcasting
job number.
bPress aor bto choose the Broadcasting
job number.
cPress OK.
The LCD will ask you what you want to
do:

dTo cancel the broadcast, press 1.
ePress Detener/Salir (Stop/Exit).
Real Time Transmission 3
When you are sending a fax, the machine will
scan the document into the memory before
sending it. Then, as soon as the telephone
line is free, the machine will start dialing and
sending.
Sometimes, you may want to send an
important document immediately, without
waiting for the machine to scan it into
memory. You can set Real Time TX to On
for all documents or Next Fax Only for the
next fax only.

bPress Menú (Menu), 3, 2, 3.

the document in real time (even if

• In Real Time Transmission, the automatic
redial feature does not work when you are
using the scanner glass.
• If the memory is full, faxes from the
scanner glass cannot be sent until you
clear some of the memory.
Overseas Mode 3
If you are having difficulty sending a fax
overseas due to possible interference on the
telephone line, we recommend that you turn
on Overseas Mode. After you send a fax
using this feature, the feature will turn itself
off.
aLoad your document.
bPress (FAX).
cPress Menú (Menu), 3, 2, 4.
dPress aor bto choose On (or Off).
Press OK.
ePress 2so you can continue sending
your fax.
fEnter the fax number.
gPress Inicio Negro (Black Start).
Checking and canceling
waiting jobs 3
You can check which jobs are still waiting in
the memory to be sent and cancel a job.
(If there are no jobs, the LCD displays
No Jobs Waiting.)
aPress Menú (Menu), 3, 5.
Any waiting jobs appear on the LCD.
bPress aor bto scroll through the jobs
and choose the job you want to cancel.
Press OK.
cDo one of the following:
Press 1to cancel it.
Press 2to exit without canceling.
dRepeat steps band cfor each job you
want to cancel.
eWhen you are finished, press
Detener/Salir (Stop/Exit).

Memory Receive 4
Memory Receive lets you receive faxes while
you are away from the machine.
PC-Fax Receive
Off
You can change your selection at any time. If
received faxes are still in the machine’s
memory when you change the Memory
Receive operation, a message will appear on
the LCD. (See Changing Memory Receive
operations on page 13.)
Printing a fax from the
memory 4
If you have chosen PC-Fax Receive, your
machine will receive and store your faxes in
its memory when your PC is turned off. To
print faxes from the memory, follow the
instructions.
aPress Menú (Menu), 3, 4.
bPress Inicio Negro (Black Start).
cPress Detener/Salir (Stop/Exit).
NOTE
When you print a fax from the memory, the
fax is erased.
PC-Fax Receive
(Windows®)4
If you have chosen PC-Fax Receive, your
machine will store received faxes in the
memory and send them to your PC. You can
then use your PC to view and store these
faxes.
Even if you have turned off your PC (for
example, at night or at the weekend), your
machine will receive and store your faxes in
its memory.
When you start your PC and the PC-FAX
Receiving software runs, your machine
transfers the faxes to your PC.
To transfer the received faxes to your PC, you
must have the PC-FAX Receiving software
running on your PC.
For more information, see Software and
Network User’s Guide: Run Brother's
PC-FAX Receiving Software on Your
Computer (Windows®).
If you choose Backup Print:On, the
machine transfers the fax to your PC and also
prints it.
aPress (FAX).

name of the PC you want to receive
faxes if you are on a network.

• PC-Fax Receive is not supported by the
Mac OS.
• Before you can set up PC-Fax Receive,
you must install the MFL-Pro Suite
software on your PC. Make sure your PC
is connected and turned on.

• If you get an error message and the
machine cannot print the faxes in the
memory, you can use this setting to
transfer your faxes to your PC. (See Basic
User’s Guide: Transferring your faxes or
Fax Journal report.)

Changing Memory Receive
operations 4
If received faxes are in your machine’s
memory when you change the Memory
Receive operation, the LCD will ask you one
of the following questions:
If all the received faxes have already
been printed 4
Erase All Fax?
• If you press 1(Yes), faxes in the
memory will be erased before the
setting changes.
• If you press 2(No), faxes in the
memory will not be erased and the
setting will be remain unchanged.
If unprinted faxes are in the memory 4
Print All Fax?
• If you press 1(Yes), faxes in the
memory will be printed before the
setting changes. If a backup copy has
already been printed, it will not be
printed again.
• If you press 2(No), faxes in the
memory will not be printed and the
setting will be unchanged.
The LCD will ask you the following question:
Send Fax to PC?
• If you press 1(Yes), faxes in the
memory will be sent to your PC before
the setting changes. You will be asked
if you want to turn on Backup Print.

• If you press 2(No), faxes in the
memory will not be erased or
transferred to your PC and the setting
will be unchanged.

Additional receiving

Receiving faxes into memory
when paper tray is empty 4
As soon as the paper tray becomes empty
during fax reception, the LCD displays
No Paper Fed. Put some paper in the
paper tray. (See Basic User’s Guide: Loading
paper and other print media.)
If you do not put paper in the paper tray, the
machine will continue receiving the fax. The
remaining pages will be stored in the
memory, if enough memory is available.
When the memory is full, the machine will
stop answering calls. To print the faxes, put
fresh paper in the tray.
Printing a reduced incoming
fax 4
If you choose On, the machine reduces each
page of an incoming fax to fit on one sheet of
Letter, Legal or A4 size paper. The machine
calculates the reduction ratio by using the
page size of the fax and your Paper Size
setting.

Receiving a fax at the end of a

At the end of a conversation, you can ask the
other party to send you a fax before you both
hang up. Make sure the ADF is empty.
aAsk the other party to place the
document in their machine and to press
the Start or Send key.
bWhen you hear the other machine's
CNG tones, press
Inicio Negro (Black Start).
cPress 2to choose Receive to receive
the fax.
dReplace the handset of the external
telephone.

Voice operations 5
You can use your external telephone to dial
voice calls.
Tone or Pulse 5
If you have a Pulse dialing service, but need
to send tone signals (for example, for
telephone banking), follow the instructions:
aPress Teléfono (Hook).
bPress #on the machine’s control panel.
Any digits dialed after this will send tone
signals.
When you are finished with the call, the
machine will return to the Pulse dialing
service.
Fax/Tel mode 5
When the machine is in Fax/Tel mode, it will
use the F/T Ring (pseudo/double-ringing) to
alert you to pick up a voice call.
If you are at the extension telephone, you'll
need to lift the handset during the F/T Ring
and then press #51between the
pseudo/double-rings. If no one is on the line,
or if someone wants to send you a fax, send
the call back to the machine by pressing
l51.
If you are at the machine, lift the external
telephone’s handset, and then press
Teléfono (Hook) to answer.
Caller ID 5
The Caller ID feature lets you use the Caller
ID subscriber service offered by many local
telephone companies. This service displays
the telephone number or name (if available)
of your caller as the line rings. Call your
telephone company for details.
Once you answer a call, the Caller ID
information disappears from the LCD, but the
call information stays stored in the Caller ID
memory.
You can view the Caller ID history and delete
numbers from the list if needed.
You can see the number (or name).
The # Unavailable message means
the call originated outside your Caller ID
service area.
The Private Call message means the
caller has intentionally blocked
transmission of Caller ID information.
You can print a list of the Caller ID information
received by your machine. (See Printing
Caller ID List on page 16.)
NOTE
The Caller ID service varies with different
carriers. Call your local telephone
company to find out about the kind of
service available in your area.

Viewing the Caller ID List 5
Your machine stores information for the last
thirty calls in the Caller ID list. When the
thirty-first call comes into the machine, it
replaces information about the first call. You
can view or print this list.
aPress Menú (Menu), 3, 0, 3.
bPress OK.
The Caller ID of the last call will appear
on the LCD display. If no ID is stored,
the beeper sounds and No Caller ID
appears on the LCD.
cPress aor bto scroll through the Caller
ID memory to choose the Caller ID you
want to view, and then press OK.
The LCD displays the caller's number
and the date and time of the call.
NOTE
To delete the Caller ID from the list, press
Borrar (Clear). Press 1to confirm.
dTo finish viewing, press
Detener/Salir (Stop/Exit).

Roll-over telephone lines 5
A roll-over telephone system is a group of two
or more separate telephone lines that pass
incoming calls to each other if they are busy.
The calls are usually passed down or “rolled
over” to the next available telephone line in a
preset order.
Your machine can work in a roll-over system
as long as it is the last number in the
sequence so the call cannot roll away. Do not
put the machine on any of the other numbers;
when the other lines are busy and a second
fax call is received, the fax call will be sent to
a line that does not have a fax machine. Your
machine will work best on a dedicated
line.
Two-line telephone system 5
A two-line telephone system is simply two
separate telephone numbers on the same
wall outlet. The two telephone numbers can
be on separate jacks (RJ11) or mixed into
one jack (RJ14). Your machine must be
plugged into an RJ11 jack. RJ11 and RJ14
jacks may be equal in size and appearance
and both may contain four wires (black, red,
green and yellow). To test the type of jack,
plug in a two-line telephone and see if it can
access both lines. If it can, you must separate
the line for your machine.
