Introduction
Welcome to the EM-850fx
We are proud that our advanced office electronic typewriter EM-850fx is
welcomed in your office, at school, and at home. It can be your desktop partner
streamlining everyday typing jobs. It is a standard typewriter. But that's not
everything. The most profitable feature is that you can use it as a dedicated
word processing machine. It works like an easy-to-use computer that runs
word processing software and office management software.
The EM-850fx is equipped with an internal memory and you can install the
optional 3.5-inch floppy disk drive FB-500. Use 3.5-inch 2DD micro-floppy
disks for the optional disk drive. One floppy disk can contain approximately
720,000 characters of data. You can enjoy typing and word processing.
You can enhance the function and convenience of the EM-850fx with optional
equipment and accessories such as paper feeder, floppy disk drive, memory
expansion board/chips, computer interface and others.

General Description
This typewriter has three main modes: word processing (WP), typewriting
(TYPE), and option (OPTION) modes. When you turn on the typewriter, the
word processing mode is selected and the WP MAIN screen is displayed. If
you have turned off the typewriter while editing a new file, the entry area for a
new filename appears. You can switch to the typewriting mode or option mode
with the TYPE key or the CODE + OPTION keys.
REMEMBER...Functions colored in green on each keytop are effective only
with the CODE key. In this User's Guide the CODE key operation is expressed
like this "press the CODE + OPTION keys."

In addition to the three main functions, the following special application
functions are available.
Merge Function
You can create many letters of the same contents and different inside addresses
faster than typing each letter separately. You need to create a master file that
contains body text and a merge file that contains merge data.
Optional Electronic Spelling Dictionary and Thesaurus
You can check misspelling and find synonyms during typing and word
processing.

Setting up Your Typewriter
Power
Connect the power cord to the receptacle. The power switch is located on the
left side of the typewriter. When the power switch is turned on, the carrier
moves to the left end. The daisy wheel homes for accurate positioning. You are
ready to operate the typewriter.
REMEMBER...Great care must be taken not to cause the data loss. It is
recommended that the data is often backed up if the typewriter has the optional
floppy disk drive. The data may be lost in the following conditions:
•The power is turned off while memory access.
(for example, opening a new file and closing files.)
•The power is turned on and off successively.
•Power failure due to the thunder or electric works.
•Low or dead back-up battery
When you unpack and use the typewriter for the first time, be sure to read the
following section ''Lithium Battery" before turning it on.

Lithium Battery
This typewriter uses a lithium battery to retain various format data. When you
turn on the typewriter, it may beep 5 times and the message lamp may flicker
and indicate the number "0". The error message also appears. The connector of
the back-up lithium battery is disconnected or the installed lithium battery has
gone dead and the memory has been cleared.
Although the battery has been factory-installed, its connector is not plugged in
at shipment. When you turn on the typewriter for the first time, you must
secure the connector. Or the proper operation is not guaranteed.
Also when you insert paper with the ^ (Paper Insert) key, you show the file
list, or you change line/page format memory and format settings, the
typewriter may beep 5 times and the message lamp may flicker and indicate the
number "0”. The error message also appears. The installed lithium battery is
about to go dead. The service life of the battery is about year or more.
Purchase a new lithium batteiy at the dealer where you purchased the
typewriter and replace the old battery with a new one. Or the format data is
restored to the default settings and the proper operation is not guaranteed.
REMEMBER...We recommend that you replace the battery with a new one
once within a year so that the typewriter keeps retaining the format data.
Follow these steps:
[ ] Keep the power on.
If you encounter the battery problem while operating, be sure to follow
this step so that you can replace with a new battery without restoring the
format data to the default ones.
[2] Open the top cover and move the carrier to the right end.
[3] Open the fixing cover of the junction cable.

[4] Replace the old battery with a new one.
• Disconnect the connector and remove the old battery.
• Plug in the connector and install a new battery.
[5 Close the fixing cover of the junction cable.
Make sure that the junction cable (white flat cable) is positioned
horizontally along the platen and carrier shaft.
[6] Close the top cover.

Display
The typewriter is equipped with the 2-line x 80-character Liquid Crystal
Display. The display sliows the text and current status of the typewriter. It
also shows guidc/error messages.
The display does not show characters and symbols as they are. Bold characters
flashes on and off. Overprinting characters and dead characters appear and
disappear alternately. Superscripts and subscripts are indicated by up and down
arrow marks as they appear and disappear on the display.

Adjusting the Display Contrast
The contrast control is on the right side of the display. When you slide it up,
the display image becomes lighter. When you slide it down, it becomes darker.
Remain Display
The display shows the memory capacity for text entry or number of characters
for a line. Pressing the CODE + left SHIFT, and OPERATE keys switches
between these two remain display modes. Switching is possible only when the
status line is displayed. The default setting is the memory capacity.
REMEMBER...If you are editing a merge file, the memory capacity appears
when the status line is on the display. If you arc in the TYPE mode, the number
of characters always appears. In these cases, you cannot switch the remain

Status On or Off
You can clear out the status line and add another line to the text area. Pressing
the CODE + left SHIFT, and PA E keys turns on and off the status line
alternately. The default setting is status off.
REMEMBER.. .If you arc in the TYPE mode, the status line always appears
on the display. In this case, you cannot turn on and off the status line. Even if
the status line is off, the status line appears when the first line of the page
comes to the 2nd line on the display. The status line automatically disappears
when the display scrolls.
