Emergency calls
The Freestyle 75 is
mains powered.
In the event of a mains
power failure you will
not be able to make or
receive calls from your
Freestyle 75.
Certain situations
may prevent you from
being able to make
calls from the cordless
handset:
If there is severe radio
interference from
sources such as other
cordless phones, radio
station transmitters,
CB radios and so on.
If the handset
batteries fail.
If there is a power cut.

Setting up
your Freestyle 75

Check that your Freestyle 75
is complete. When you unpack
you should have:

Situating your
Freestyle 75
Situate your Freestyle
75 close enough to a
telephone socket and
a mains power supply
socket so that the
cables will reach.
You need enough
room above the base
unit for the aerial to be
fully extended.
Do not cover or
enclose the machine;
allow a free flow of air
to its surfaces.
For the best operating
conditions, try to place
the base unit away
from large metal
objects and other
electrical appliances
such as cookers,
radiators and garage
doors. These may
cause interference and
reduce the quality of
your calls.

Plug the 3-pin
adaptor into the mains
power socket and
switch on
The base unit red
power light comes on.
Batteries cannot be
overcharged. However,
leaving the handset on the
base unit all the time can
deteriorate rechargeable
batteries. To get the longest
possible life from your
batteries, take the handset
off the base for a few hours
each day.
Battery care
Do not try to use any
power adaptor except the
one provided - item code
871605 - otherwise you
may permanently damage
your Freestyle 75 and
this will invalidate the
warranty.
Warning
To wall-mount your
Freestyle 75, use the
wall-mounting bracket,
screws and wall plugs
provided. See page 17.
Check your
telephone wall socket
If you do not have a
modern-style socket,
call Freefone
0800 800 150
and ask for a BT
engineer to come and
fit the correct socket.
This is a chargeable
service.
Plug the mains
power cord into the
base unit
To prevent the
cable being pulled out
Charge the handset
batteries for at least
12 hours
When you first connect
your Freestyle 75, the
rechargeable batteries
in the handset need
charging for 12 hours.
Place the handset
on the base unit face
down, ensuring the
contacts are touching.
The CHARGING light
on the base unit
comes on.
As a rule, placing
the handset on the
base unit overnight
will keep the batteries
fully charged for all
normal use.

Electrical storm
warning
There is a slight chance
that your Freestyle 75
could be damaged by an
electrical storm.
We recommend you
unplug the machine from
the telephone socket
during storms.

Your Freestyle 75
is now ready for
making and
receiving calls.
Battery charging
Plug your
Freestyle 75 into the
phone socket
Fully extend the
telescopic aerial on
the base unit
When fully charged
and in good condition,
the handset batteries will
provide up to 7 hours
continuous talk time or
72 hours standby.
If the batteries are
running low, the Battery
Low light will flash.
If you are making a
call and the batteries are
running low, the handset
will beep approximately
every 7 seconds. We
recommend you finish
your call and recharge the
batteries.
Extend the base unit
telescopic aerial on
your Freestyle 75 (as
shown below) to
ensure the best
possible signal and
reception.

Making and
receiving calls
The handset range is
up to 200 metres from
the base unit in ideal
conditions.
If you start to go out
of range while using
the phone, you will
hear warning beeps.
If you do not come
back in range, your
call will be cut off.
To make a call
Lift the handset off
the base
Press the TALK
button.

To receive a call
When the phone rings:
If your handset is on
the base unit, simply
pick it up to answer
the call.
or
If your handset is
off the base, press
the TALK button to
answer the call.
To redial the last
number
You can redial a
number of up to 31
digits long.
Press the TALK button.
The handset IN USE
light comes on.
The base unit In Use
light flashes.
Listen for a dialling
tone, then dial the
number.
To end a call
Press the TALK
button
or
Replace the handset
on the base unit.
A long beep indicates
your phone is ready to
make or receive the next
call.

dialling tone, press
the REDIAL button.
The last number you
called is redialled.
To ensure the best
sound quality
Your Freestyle 75
automatically scans
available radio
channels between the
handset and base for
the best quality signal.
However, if you hear
noise or interference
during your call:
Press the CHANNEL
button.
Your Freestyle 75 will
select a new channel
and confirm this with
a beep.
If you go out
of range
Your Freestyle 75 has
a range of 200 metres
under ideal conditions.
However, if you go
out of range during a
call, you will hear a
series of beeps. Move
closer to the base to
re-establish the signal.
Using Secrecy
You can prevent your
caller from hearing
you while you talk to
someone else close by.
Press and hold down
the SECRECY button.
While you are holding
down the button, your
caller cannot hear you.
Release the SECRECY
button to continue the
call.

Using the Quickdial
memory to store and
dial numbers
Your Freestyle 75
handset can store up
to ten separate phone
numbers, each up to
23 digits long.
You can then dial each
number by pressing
just two buttons.
To store a number
in the Quickdial
memory
Press the QUICKDIAL
button.
You hear a beep.
Press one of the
0-9buttons on the
keypad to set the
location code under
which your phone
number will be stored.
Dial the phone number
you want to store.

Press the QUICKDIAL
button.
You hear a confirm-
ation beep and the
number is stored.
If you pause for more
than 10 seconds between
button presses, you will
hear a series of beeps and
your Freestyle 75 will
return to standby.
Repeat these steps
for any other numbers
you want to store,
using a different
0-9location code for
each one.
Stored numbers
can include those for
switchboard and
network services
that use the ✱and #
buttons as well as the
PAUSE and RECALL
functions (see page 11).
Keep a note of your stored
numbers on the Quickdial
reference label on the base
unit.
To change a stored
number
Any existing number
stored in the memory
can be overwritten by
entering a new
number under the
same location code.
Simply follow the
steps shown in ‘To
store a number in the
Quickdial memory’.
Remember to update your
Quickdial reference label.
To dial a stored
number
Press the TALK
button.
Press the QUICKDIAL
button.
Press the 0-9location
code under which
the number you want
is stored. The number
is dialled automatically.
To insert a
pause when storing
numbers
With some switch-
boards, after dialling
the access code you
may have to wait for a
moment while the
switchboard picks up
an outside line. To
account for this, you
can enter a pause
within a phone
number.
Follow the steps
shown in ‘To store a
number in the
Quickdial memory’.
When you reach the
appropriate place
within the number
where a pause is
required, press the
PAUSE button.
The PAUSE button
gives you a 4-second
pause when the
number is dialled.

Using the Recall
button
Recall allows you
to use a variety of
facilities when
connected to a
switchboard. It can
also be used with
certain BT Select
Services. For more
information, contact
us on Freefone 0800
800 152 (business)
or 150 (residential).
If you are not
connected to BT,
contact your Network
Service Provider for
information on their
services.
You can mix manual
and memory dialling as
required.
For example, you can dial
the area code 0181 380
from the memory and
then complete the number
manually.
To page the
handset from the
base unit
If you misplace the
handset, you can use
PAGE to find it again.
Press the PAGE button
on the base unit.
The handset will beep
continuously. The In
Use light on the base
flashes.
Stop the handset
beeping by pressing
the PAGE button again.
You can also stop it by
pressing the TALK
button on the handset.
The In Use light stays
on and you will hear a

If you have any problems using
your Freestyle 75, try these common
solutions
Occasionally,
overhead power lines
can also cause
interference if you
are using the handset
outside.
In the unlikely event
of your Freestyle 75
picking up conver-
sations from other
cordless telephones,
change channels
using the CHANNEL
button.
Beeps from the
handset
A slow beep during a
telephone call means
the handset needs
recharging.
Have you just added
numbers to the
memory? Beeps
confirm that numbers
have been stored.
No dialling tone
Check that the mains
power is on and the
base unit is plugged
in.
The handset batteries
may need recharging.
Is the line cord
plugged into the
telephone socket?
Make sure that the
base unit aerial is fully
extended.
You may be out of
range. Try moving
closer to the base.
Nothing happens
when you dial
Try the solutions
listed under ‘No
dialling tone’ above.
The handset
does not ring
Try the solutions
listed under ‘No
dialling tone’ above.
You may have too
many phones, fax
machines and/or
answering machines
plugged in which
might be overloading
the sockets.
(See ‘How may phones

Noise or interference
on the handset
Make sure that the
base unit aerial is fully
extended.
You may be out of
range.
The base or handset
may be too close to
electrical equipment
or metal obstructions.

handset are clean.
If necessary wipe
them with a dry cloth.
Do not use spray or
abrasive cleaners as
damage to the internal
components or
polished surfaces
could result.
Remove the old
battery pack by
unplugging the small
white plug that connects
it to the handset.
Plug in the connector
of the new battery
pack and fit the pack
into the compartment.
Close the battery
compartment cover.
Replace the handset
on the base unit and
charge for 12 hours.
The old battery pack must
be recycled or disposed of
responsibly.
Cleaning the
charging contacts
Wipe the casing clean
with a damp, not wet
cloth.
Check that the
charging contacts on

If you move back
within range, the
beeps will stop and
you can continue
your call.
The handset beeps
when placed back on
the base unit.
The handset may be
being paged from the
base unit.
Replacing the
handset battery
If the handset starts
running out of power
very quickly after
charging, it means the
current battery pack
needs to be replaced.
New battery packs
are available from BT
shops, or by calling the
Freestyle 75 help-line on
Lo-call 08457 585 589.
Slide open the battery
compartment cover on
the back of the
handset.

information
adaptor supplied, which
conforms to EN60950.
Any other usage will
invalidate the approval
given to this apparatus if,
as a result, it ceases to
comply with EN60950.
Call security
Your Freestyle 75 has its
own digital security code
that prevents other
cordless phone owners
from using your phone
line. This ensures that
you are charged only for
calls using your phone.
However, all approved
cordless phones use
radio signals to
communicate between
the base unit and
cordless handset units. It
is therefore possible that
your conversations could
be overheard by other
people, on their cordless
phones, or on radios that
use the same radio
frequencies.
As this problem applies
equally to all similar
cordless phones
currently available in the
UK, call privacy cannot
be guaranteed. However,
the security coding
prevents unauthorised
use of your line.
In the unlikely event of
your Freestyle 75
picking up conversations
from other cordless
phones being used
nearby, try changing
channels using the
CHANNEL button on the
handset.
Transmission
frequencies
This cordless telephone
has been designed to
operate on radio
frequencies which have
been assigned to the
exclusive use of cordless
telephones. As the use of
cordless telephones
becomes more
widespread, the quality
of service obtained from
this apparatus may
lessen.

tested and approved for
connection to public
networks, provided it is
used in accordance with
the guidelines in this
user guide.
You may connect it:
To direct exchange lines.
To extensions with new
plug and socket arrange-
ments provided with
these direct exchange
lines.
To compatible switch-
boards.
You may NOT connect it:
To shared service
(party) lines.
As an extension to a
payphone.
This phone is designed for
UK use only. Using it abroad
may violate local radio laws.

Transmission frequencies
of available channels:
How many phones
can you have?
(Ringer Equivalence
Number)
Although you may have
any number of sockets, it
is important to limit the
number of telephones
and other items of
apparatus connected to
the line by those
sockets, to ensure that
each telephone will ring.
Every telephone or item
of apparatus has a
Ringer Equivalence
Number (REN). In most
cases a standard line
should provide enough
current for 2 or more
telephones or items of
apparatus, if the RENs
add up to no more than 4.
Your Freestyle 75 has a
REN value of 1. Any
telephone provided by
BT may be assumed to
have a REN value of 1
unless otherwise stated
on the base unit. Even
where the number of
telephones has been
limited, there is no
guarantee that different
types of telephone on the
same line will ring.
Safety advice
Don’t use your Freestyle
75 in the open air during
thunderstorms. Unplug
it from the telephone
line and the mains
socket when there are
storms in your area.
Don’t use your Freestyle
75 outdoors in the rain,
or handle it with wet
hands.
Don’t install the base
unit near a sink, bath or
shower. Electrical
appliances can cause
serious injury if used
when you are wet or
standing in water.
Don’t install the base
unit where the various
leads can be tripped over
or walked on. This may
cause injury, or damage
to the leads and your
Freestyle 75.
Connection
information
Your Freestyle 75 may
be connected to public
networks in the United
Kingdom.
It may also be connected
to compatible switch-
boards. If in doubt, your
switchboard supplier or
maintainer should be
able to offer help. Advice
on connection to BT
switching systems can
be obtained by dialling BT
Freefone 0800 800 152.
If you do not have a
compatible switchboard,
it cannot be guaranteed
that your Freestyle 75
will operate correctly
under all possible
conditions of connection.
Guarantee
BT guarantees Freestyle
75 for a year, provided
that:
The goods have only
been used for their
intended purpose, and
have not been subjected
to misuse, or been
wilfully or accidentally
damaged.
The goods have not been
tampered with or
repaired by anyone other
than BT, its staff or
agents.

75 to any BT shop for
forwarding to the repair
department (there will
be a carriage charge for
this service).

The terms of this
guarantee do not affect
your statutory rights.

Your Freestyle 75 can
be wall-mounted by
using the bracket
provided.
You can use the
bracket as a template
to mark where the
screws should go into
the wall.
Before you wall-mount
your Freestyle 75, check
that:
• the wall can support the
weight of the base unit
and handset;
• the position you choose
leaves enough space so
that the base unit (which
is larger than the
bracket) is clear of any
obstruction on the wall,
such as a shelf or
cupboard. Room should
be left so that the handset
can be placed on charge
without touching any
obstructions;
• the position leaves
enough space for the
aerial to be extended
when wall-mounted.

For the best operating
conditions, try to place the
base unit away from large
metal objects and other
electrical appliances.
Drill 2 holes for the
screws and insert the
wall-plugs provided
(if required).
Drive the screws into
the wall, leaving about
5mm free on which to
mount the bracket.
Hook the bracket over
the screw heads to
check if it fits correctly,
then remove again.
Make sure that the
power supply and the
telephone cables are
connected to the base
unit, then fit the
cables into the
