1 GENERAL
Buttery Avionics
1 General
Butterfly Connect Stick is a very compact, lightweight USB-device wirelessly connecting Smart-
phones such as Apple®iOS®-devices to aircraft systems.
Butterfly Connect Stick creates an IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless AD-HOC network (WiFi®) and trans-
mits data from host devices like e.g. the Butterfly Vario via the TCP/IP protocol. Many Smartphone-
Apps are capable of displaying and using such data. Examples for data are current GPS-position,
pressure altitude, traffic or engine data.

1 GENERAL
1.1 Safety instructions and restrictions on use
Installation and operation must be on the basis of non-interference with and no hazard to the exist-
ing suite of other equipment necessary for safe flying operation, or installed to comply with official
requirements. Installation and operation must comply with official regulations and requirements.
Never make safety critical decisions based on transferred information. Make sure to
the end users of your App that displayed data are for situational awareness only.
Butterfly Connect does not have a JTSO or FAA-TSO airworthiness certification.

cations are subject to change without notice. Butterfly Avionics its associates, development team,
suppliers, manufacturers and data suppliers accept no responsibility for any damage or claims that

2 Installation
2.1 Connector
Butterfly Connect Stick features one central USB connector for power and data.

2.2 Mechanical Installation
Carefully insert the stick into one of the Butterfly Vario USB ports and take care to insert it in the
correct direction.
The stick may be destroyed if trying to insert it in the wrong direction

3 Initial Configuration
Butterfly Vario devices are compatible with vario-software version 1.06 or higher
3.1 Butterfly Vario Configuration
•Butterfly Vario Configuration - Power on Butterfly Vario
- Go to Menu then Setup then Device,
Peripherals, and set WiFi to Yes
- Go to Menu then Setup,Device and set your
data output as desired
When using iGlide, set LXWP as the main Vario dataset.
Changes only take effect after re-booting Butterfly Vario
3.2 Connecting your iOS®-Device
To create a connection to iOS®-devices, please follow the steps underneath:
These settings only have to be entered once at initiial configuration
•Connect iOS®-Devices - Power on Butterfly Vario
- Open the iOS®-Settings App on your
iOS®-Device.
- Go to Wi-Fi and make sure WiFi is active.
- In the Choose a Network..-field the Network of
your Butterfly Vario appears. It is always named
Butterfly Vario followed by a multi-digit number
code.
- Tap on the Butterfly Vario-Network to establish
a connection
- Tap on the little blue arrow next to the Butterfly
Vario-Network
- In the field IP-Address choose Static
- Enter the following IP-Address in the field
IP-Address:192.168.1.2
- Enter the following Subnet-Mask in the field
Subnet-Mask:255.255.255.0
Make sure that your iOS®-Device remains connected with the network. To prevent autoamtic
network switching activate Ask to Join Networks in the Wi-Fi menu.
