3.1.1 ONT and UPS Site Guidelines
3.1.1.1 2364 ONT Site Guidelines
3.3.1.2 UPS Site Guidelines
3.1.1.1 2364 ONT Site Guidelines
The 2364 ONT uses an external enclosure to protect the enclosed networking electronics. The product design accommo-
dates a wide range of environmental extremes, including harsh winters, hot summers and associated snow and rain (refer
to Section 3.3.2 Weatherproofing the 2364 ONT for information about protecting the ONT from corrosion in coastal
regions). However, as with all electronic equipment, there are operational limitations.
1.3.1.1.1 2364 ONT Temperature Restrictions
Outside ambient temperature when 2364 ONT electronics panel is installed inside Calix's outer enclosure:
- Temperature range: -40C to +55C (-13F to 131F).
2364 ONT electronics panel inside a different outer enclosure:
- Temperature range: -40C to 65C (-40F to 149F).
- Humidity range: Relative humidity must be between 10% and 90% without condensation.
1.3.1.1.2 2364 ONT Location Guidelines
Before the 2364 ONT is installed at a residence or business, consideration of an appropriate physical location is important.
Use the following guidelines:
• The ONT should be located within a region that is less than 25ft from the point of entry of cables entering the physical
structure of the building."
• The 2364 ONT must be mounted in an area with access to existing customer wiring and grounding. It must be located
Caution: This equipment must be connected to a known good earth ground at all times during
installation and service. Refer to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and state/local codes for details on
grounding requirements.

within 25 feet of the indoor Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
• The 2364 ONT electronics panel may be mounted inside a building without the outer enclosure. When the 2364 ONT is
mounted in the outer enclosure use the following guidelines:
- The 2364 ONT should ideally be mounted on the side of the structure in a location where it is shaded from direct
summer sunlight which in some locations could raise the internal temperatures beyond the upper range of operat-
ing parameters.
- Avoid locating the 2364 ONT on dark colored walls with southern exposures where thermal loads in direct summer
sunlight can easily exceed the upper range of operating parameters.
- If you must mount the 2364 ONT on a dark colored wall, allow a gap of at least half an inch between the ONT and the
wall, allowing air to flow behind the ONT and cool the unit. A screen should be placed around the gap to prevent
bees, wasps and hornets from building a nest behind the ONT that would obstruct air flow.
- Locate the 2364 ONT in an area where it is out of direct water spray from an irrigation or sprinkler system.
3.3.1.2 UPS Site Guidelines
The UPS must be indoors and within six feet of an AC outlet. The UPS must also be located within 30 feet of the 2364 ONT.
This distance also includes the cable management.
3.3.2 Weatherproofing the 2364 ONT
When required, apply Dow Corning® High-Vacuum Grease to the connectors used by the Ethernet, POTS and DS1 ports.
This grease keeps all moisture out of the connectors and prevents the connections from being shorted out by conductive
corrosive solutions. Dow Corning® High-Vacuum Grease can be purchased from Calix.
For grease application instructions refer to Sections 3.10 Connecting Telephone Service (POTS) Wires, 3.11 Connecting
the Ethernet Cables and 3.12 Connecting the DS1 Cables.

• Drop cable and field splice or field connectorisation.
For other drop cable types, route the fiber through a riser conduit. You can then terminated it at the bulk head adapter. In
all cases, route the tie-wraps through the bottom of the ONT enclosure.
Use the following steps to route the fiber drop cable:
1. Thread the fiber pigtail through the molded guide.
2. Remove the dust cover and attach it to the connector.
3. Make sure there are no bends in the fiber of less than 30mm (1.2 inches) radius or 60mm (~2.5 inches). When the main-
tenance door is closed it should not come in contact with the fiber. The fiber slack management loop in the ONT mold-
ing allows up 10 feet of 3mm patch cord or similar size cable to be dressed and secured.
Caution: Use caution when routing wires and cables. Avoid severe bending and routing over sharp edges.
Use grommet material when possible to avoid wear on cable insulation.

3.6.2 Fiber Cord Installation
A fiber connection is required between the ONT electronics panel and the fiber termination point installed in the outer
enclosure. Achieve this by using a user-supplied patch cord.
Install the fiber cord using the following steps:
1. Remove the dust cover from one end of the patch cord and attach the cord to the incoming fiber drop at either the
optional Optitap adaptor or the user-supplied bulk head.
2. Dress the Patch cord around the fiber management feature. Leave the loose end of the patch cord with the dust cover
on. It is connected to the inner enclosure after installation.
3.6.3 Making the Fiber Splice
If a fiber splice is required, the molding also permits up to a 60mm fiber splice to be secured in the molded fiber splice
holder. To minimize optical link budget losses, refer to the fiber manufacturers recommended fiber splicing techniques.
3.6.4 2364 ONT Electronics Panel Installation
Install the ONT electronics panel using the following steps:
1. Install electronics panel by hanging it from the two tabs in the upper part of the enclosure as shown in Figure 3-3.
