Congratulations, you are the owner of a brand new NMEA Connect Plus. The NMEA
ConnectPlus(NCPalongthedocument)productlinebelongstoafamilyofgatewaysand
rangeextenders.
The NCP lets you connect any ultrasonic wind meter (wired or Portable) from Calypso´s
portfoliotoanNMEA0183orNMEA2000network,and/orextendyourBluetoothandWIFI
signalrange.
Moreover,theBluetoothtransmissionallowsuptotwoBluetoothdevicestobeconnected
at the same time, considering the NCP a great solution to access your wind data
simultaneouslyinseveralBluetoothtablets,smartphones,smartwatches,PCs,etc…
TheNCPisaverysimpledevicetoinstallanduse.YouonlyneedtoconnecttheNCPtoan
NMEA0183networkandthepowersupply,oronlyneedstobeconnectedtoanNMEA2000
network (in this case the network is already self‐powered).
EasytoconfigureviaWebserverandUpgradableviaUSB.
Thefollowingimageshowsthedifferentconnectivityoptions:

2 Familymodels
ThehighendmodeloftheNCPisagatewaybetweendifferentinterfacessuchasNMEA0183,
NMEA2000,BLE(BluetoothLowEnergy)andWIFI.TheNCPproductrangeisbeendesignedto
yieldmaximumversatility;theNCPrangeoffersseveralmodelstoserveanumberofdifferent
cases:
BLE to NMEA 0183: It converts your ULTRASONIC Portable wind data into NMEA
0183 sentences. It also acts as a BLE repeater allowing you to connect up to 2
Bluetoothdevicestomonitoryourwinddataatthesametime.
BLE to NMEA2000: You can use your ULTRASONIC Portable in an NMEA 2000
network by converting the BLE data received from your portable to NMEA 2000
PGNs (messages). It also acts as a BLE repeater allowing you toconnectupto2
Bluetoothdevicestomonitoryourwinddataatthesametime.
Wired to NMEA2000 + BLE:YoucanuseyourULTRASONICWiredorUltraLow
Power (ULP485) in an NMEA 2000 network by converting the NMEA0183 wind
sentencesintoNMEA2000PGNs.AdditionallyitsendsthedatathroughBluetooth
andallowsyoutoconnectupto2Bluetoothdevicesatthesametime.
HighEnd:Themostversatilemodel.YoucanreceivewinddatafromanyUltrasonic
windmeterwithinCalypso´srangeofproducts(bytheNMEA0183interfaceorby
Bluetooth signal), and convertsthe wind data into NMEA 0183 sentences (wired
andWi‐Fi),NMEA2000PGNsandBluetooth.Itcanalsobeusedasrange‐extender

0183 network and displays, the best option is to use the NCP: BLE to NMEA0183
Model.

toNMEA0183windsentences.Moreover,youcanmonitorthewind data in your
mobilephoneortabletusingupto2Bluetoothdevicesatthesametime.

5 Functionalities
TheNCPcanreceiveinformationviaNMEA0183,BLEorWIFI.TheNCPwillusethewind
datafromtheinterfacethatfirstcomestotheNCPandselectitasreceiver.Thewinddata
ofthatinterfaceisconvertedorrepeatedtoalloutputsavailable.

TheNCPcanbepoweredfromseveralsources:
NMEA2000backbonepower:whenconnected,theNCPispoweredfromit.This
option is compatible with 12VDC supplies typically using 126mA (3 LEN) at 12
VDC.Thispowersourceisisolatedfromtherestofthecircuit.
USBpower:Availablewhenothersourcesarenotavailable.Whenothersource
isavailabletheUSBpowerdrainisminimal.

AlsowinddatareceivedviaBLEorthroughtheWi‐Fi‐Repeaterisconvertedinto
NMEA2000protocolandtransferredtoanNMEA2000network.
WhenconnectedtotheNMEA2000backbone,theNCPreceivesitspowerfromit.A
correctpoweredandterminatedNMEA2000networkisrequiredbeforeusingthis
interface.
WhentheNCPisusedonaNMEA2000network,theNCPbackbonecablewithend
freewiresshouldbeconnectedthroughtheunit(followtheinstructionsinsection
6.2).
ToconnecttheNCPtotheNMEA2000network,youshouldconnectthedropcable
maleconnectortothefemaleconnectoroftheNMEA2000backbone(note:thekey
inthemaleconnectorandthekeywayonthefemaleconnector).Makesurethe
cableisconnectedsecurelyandthatthecollaronthecableconnectoristightened
firmly.

When the NCP is used on a NMEA 0183 network, the cable with end free wires
shouldbeconnectedthroughtheunit(followtheinstructionsinsection6.3).
Keep in mind that if the unit is connected to anNMEA 2000 network, you do not
need an extra power connection. Otherwise, you must power the device using the
dedicatedVCCinputortheUSBpower.

ultrasonic.

The NCPis an Access Point to access the NCP Webserver Configuration Page, or
accessyourWi‐FiwinddataincaseyourNCPmodelhasthisoption.
Itwillbroadcastit’sSSIDas“NMEA+<MACAddress>”.Thisensuresthat,bydefault,
everyNCPhasauniqueAccessPoint(e.g.ifyourMACaddressisa1:a2:a3:a4:a5:a6,
thenyourSSIDwillbeNmea+a1a2a3a4a5a6).
TheSSIDandpasswordofyourdevicecanbefoundprintedonalabel inside the
blackgateway.
TheNCPSSIDwillbevisibleusingthenetworksettings(showavailablenetworks)of
yourPC,orusuallyundersettings/connections/Wi‐Fionyour mobile device.
Selecting it will prompt a connection and request the user to enter the Wi‐Fi
password. Once the password is entered, the Wi‐Fi enabled PC or device should
connectwithinafewseconds(dependingontheoperatingsystem).
Note: The connection manager will report “No Internet” which is correct as your
device is now connected directly to the NCP Access Point which does not provide
internetaccess.
The NCP built‐in configuration can always be accessed by typingintheIP address:

6 Installation
Beforeyoustarttheinstallationmakesureallpowersourcesareoff!
ToconnectacabletotheNCPinternalinterfacefollowthestepsbelow:
1. RemovethescrewstoopentheNMEAConnectPlusgateway.Theconnectorsareinthe
positionasthefollowingimageshows.
2. Loosentheholdertointroducethecableinsideandpassthecablethroughthehole.
3. Connect the wires in the correct position according to the information given in the
followingsections.Toputthewireintotheconnector,pushwithyourfingerorwitha
tool.

5. AttachtheNMEAConnectPlussecurelytothevessel.
6. When all wires are connected and the gateway is closed connect the cables to your

Earlier versions of NMEA 0183 (before V2.0) used slightly different connection
methodsandsignalslevels.Theinstrumentshadjustone‘NMEA’ data line (‘Tx’ or
‘Out’) and used the ground as the other line. It is possibleto connect an old type
single‐endedsystembyconnectingtheNMEA+/Aoutputfromtheunittothe‘Rx/In’
input of the device, and the NMEA ‐/B output from the unit to the ground of the
single‐endeddevice.
IfafourwirescableisbeingusedtoconnecttheNMEA0183interfaceandthepower
supplywiththesignals:NMEA+,NMEA‐,VCC,GND:youcanconnecttheGNDwire
totheGNDPowerposition(seenextsection)andlefttheRS485‐GNDunconnected.

Wi‐Fitoyournetwork(seesection7.1).
WhenconnectingtotheNCPAccessPoint,theNCPIPaddressisthe 192.168.4.1. If it is
connect to your Wi‐Fi network, the IP address will be the one youhadconfigured
previously.
You can now access the NCP configuration page from any web browser. Enter the IP
addressintotheaddressbarandyouwillbeshowntheNCPhomepage.
