USER GUIDE: COMFORT VALUE Toileting Sling (CVT)
UG/CVT-01
1. APPLICATION
The service user requires core strength to be able to use the COMFORT VALUE Toileting sling (CVT)
safely and a risk assessment should be taken before prescribing the sling. The CVT sling has safety
features such as a non-slip panel in the back and a hook and loop belt and clunk click buckle
fastening. The fabric is fast drying and drains well, the sling can be used in wet and dry
environments.
Attachment type: Loop fixing.
2. SAFETY
 Only people trained and assessed as competent should ever use hoists and slings.
 CVT slings come in four sizes. Ensure that you select the correct size for the comfort and safety of
the person being transferred.
 Follow the wash care instructions carefully and never use bleach.
 Slings must be thoroughly examined for safety by a competent person every six months or more
frequently if the competent person deems it to be necessary.
 Further guidance is available about sling safety via www.careandindependence.com
3. SLING INSPECTION (SWL)
3.1 Care & Independence slings are designed and manufactured to meet or exceed BS EN 10535:2006
Hoists for the transfer of disabled persons.
3.2 The maximum weight load is 200kg.
3.2 Slings should be inspected prior to use and after washing. The sling should be checked for the
following:
 Stitching becoming undone, frayed, broken with special attention to the critical points such
as tape attachment and lifting loops.
 Any signs of damage to the fabric such as tearing undue wear or miss-shaped
 Signs of discolouring or bleaching of the material
 All the label clearly legible
 All parts of the sling complete
4. COMPATIBILITY
4.1 Care & Independence slings have been manufactured to work with most of the major hoist
manufacturers’ equipment. A compatibility statement is available on request.
4.2 A risk assessment must be completed before using the sling, even if the hoist and sling is provided
from the same manufacturer.

5. FITTING THE SLING (CHAIR IN-SITU)
6. WASHING YOUR SLING
6.1 For general cleaning where, cross infection is not an issue, and to maximise the life of your sling,
wash gently at 40°C. Use a mild soap solution or a non-biological detergent without bleaching
additives. Do not add bleach or stain removers as they will fade and weaken the fabric.
6.2 Air dry, cabinet dry or tumble dry on a cool cycle (below 60°C). Do not tumble dry on a hot setting,
place on hot pipes, heaters or near a flame.
6.3 Do not iron your slings.
7. DECONTAMINATION AND INFECTION CONTROL
7.1 For good hygiene, we recommend that slings are not shared. If you need to hoist more than one
person, it is strongly recommended that each person is allocated their own sling.
The waist support should
be fitted as low as
possible around the
torso with arms outside
the sling.
First fasten the velcro
band, then secure the
clunk and clip belt strap.
NOTE: The Velcro should
always be closed
when not in use
Slide leg pieces evenly
under each leg.
Following a risk assessment, tapes can
be crossed. *RECOMMENDED*
 Cross the tapes over one another
by threading one tape through the
other by passing one tape through
the section beneath the bottom
loop.
Or, continue without crossing.
Attach sling to hoist as normal.
 As the service user begins to be lifted and the body thins
out retighten the clunk-click belt.
 As a guide, we suggest starting with a short shoulder/long
leg position, however it is recommended the care plan is
followed.

7.2 DOH guidance HSG95/18 recommends washing at 71°C for not less than 3 minutes plus 8 minutes
for mixing to achieve decontamination. Please refer to the guidance for full details.
Lower wash temperature will increase the life of the slings.
8. CE DECLARATION OF CONFORMITY
