Care & Independence Glove HUG User manual

FOR ALL USERS
Fig a Fig b
1Before use, check that the sling is in good condition and
appropriate to the users size.
2 This sling can be fitted in a supine or seated position (as described
below)
FITTING IN A SUPINE POSITION
Position the sling by rolling the user into the recovery position. Always
roll the user towards yourself if possible. Align the sling along their
length and tuck it under them from their back towards their front, until
the longitudinal centre of the sling aligns with the user’s spine. Roll
them back onto a supine position and then into the recovery position
facing the other side of the bed. Carefully pull the sling through
underneath them. Roll them back onto a supine position. Check the
alignment of the sling and reposition if required. Fasten the three
buckles across the chest and tighten using the adjustment straps until
comfortably secure (Fig a). The upper lifting straps should pass over
the users shoulders. Fit the leg sections around the user’s upper leg.
Close and fasten the two outer buckles and tighten using the
adjustment strap until comfortably secure (Fig b).
FITTING IN A SEATED POSITION
Slide the sling down behind the user with the label at the back. The leg
sections should be at the lowest edge. Fasten the three buckles
across the chest and tighten using the adjustment straps until
comfortably secure (Fig a). The upper lifting straps should pass over
the users shoulders. Fit the leg sections around the user’s upper leg.
Close and fasten the two outer buckles and tighten using the
adjustment strap until comfortably secure (Fig b)
3Final adjustments should be made depending on whether
the sling is to be used for standing (A) or access (B)
A FOR STANDING
4 Take care that the strap attachment and adjustment is correct for standing (A) and access (B) before hoisting.
The posture and comfort of the user is determined by the adjustment of the straps and positioning of the sling parts.
A ATTACHMENT AND ADJUSTMENT FOR STANDING
•Attach only the shoulder straps to the spreader bar. The shoulder straps are adjustable to ensure adequate head
clearance from the spreader bar.
•Taller users may need the shoulder straps adjusting longer to provide sufficient head clearance.
•Hoists with limited lift may require the shoulder straps to be shortened to maximise the hoist lift
•Check the 3 chest buckles are still tightened sufficiently to provide a secure fastening. The torso will extend during
the lift which may require further adjustment.
B ATTACHMENT AND ADJUSTMENT FOR ACCESS
•Determine the correct loop on the leg strap for the position required. The choice of loop will depend on how reclined
the user will be. Shortening the shoulder strap, or using the shortest leg loop will further the recline. Attach the
chosen loop to the hoist.
•Lengthening the shoulder straps or choosing the longer leg loop with sit the user more upright.
NOTE: If using this sling for different users without adjusting the straps, the taller and slimmer users will be more reclined and
vice versa.
WARNING: Mobile hoists must have unobstructed movement, with the brakes off when using the HUG Mk2 in

Take care with the hoist/spreader bar, impact with it could cause injury.
Care
No sling must ever be used to lift more than its rated load (see label)
If a sling is worn or damaged its strength will be reduced and it must be replaced.
To maximise the life of your sling, wash gently at 40C. The sling can be washed at
up to 71C for infection control purposes if necessary. Use a mild soap solution or a
non biological detergent. Do not use bleach or other cleaning agents that may
weaken the fabric. Air dry or tumble dry on a cool cycle. Just like a garment, a sling
will last longer if well cared for.
The HUG (MK2) sling is intended to be “user specific”. If you propose to use this
sling with more than one person you are advised to consult an infection control
specialist on how to avoid the risk of cross infection.
The condition of the sling should be checked before each use, particularly around
strap attachment points. These are secured with contrast coloured thread for easy
safety checking.
All slings should be thoroughly examined by a competent person and the details
recorded at least every six months in accordance with the requirements of the Lifting
Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER)1998.
Returns
If you need to return this sling, please contact your supplier for their
procedure.
There is a legal requirement to ensure that items sent by mail, or other
carrier, are clean and that there is no risk of infection to handlers or
recipients. Dirty slings returned to your supplier cannot be returned to
sender and regrettably must be disposed of at senders cost.
