Some!Safety!Cautions!
•To$avoid$accidents$and$unnecessary$strain,$make$sure$you’re$using$correct$
working$techniques$and$safety$equipment$when$using$your$Holey-Moley$
Digger.$$If$the$digger$is$too$long$to$use$comfortably,$shorter$extension$tubes$
are$available.$$Do!not!stand!on!ladders!or!unstable!surfaces!when!using!
the!digger.$

•Call!811!before!you!dig.$It’s$easy,$it’s$free$and$it’s$the$law.$$Allow$a$couple$
days.$You$don’t$want$to$be$digging$into$gas$lines$or$electrical$cables.$$$

$
$
•Wear!protective!gloves.$$The$digger$blades$are$sharp.$$Gloves$will$also$
protect$against$static$electricity$shock.$
$
$
•Wear!gloves.!!Turn!of!the!vacuum!to!let!static!charge!to!dissipate.!!
When$vacuuming$up$dry$materials,$a!static!charge!can!build!up!on!the!
digging!equipment,!hose!and!the!vacuum.$This$is$common$in$a$dry$
climate$when$digging$in$dry$ground.$This$is$similar$to$what$is$experienced$
when$walking$across$dry$carpets.$A$static$electric$shock$is$not$dangerous$to$
persons$but$it$can$cause$a$surprise.$$$Wear$Gloves.$Turn$your$vacuum$off$
and$the$static$electricity$will$rapidly$dissipate.$

•Wear!protective!eyewear.$$$$
•Turn!the!vacuum!off!before!removing!the!hose.!!!
•Dirt,$sand,$and$stones$travel$through$the$vacuum$tubing$at$high$velocities.$$
•Do$not$remove$the$hose$while$the$shop$vacuum$is$operating$–$dirt$can$be$
moving$at$over$100mph$up$the$vacuum$tube$and$it$will$continue$to$flow$for$
a$second$after$pulling$the$hose$off.$$This$can$be$dangerous$to$the$face$and$
eyes.$$$

$
•Wear!a!protective!mask!when!working!around!dust,$especially$when$
dumping$shop$vacuums$filled$with$dirt.$$The$dust$can$contain$contaminants$
that$could$be$harmful$to$your$health.$$$
$
Please!protect!children!
•This!equipment!is!not!made!for!children!to!be!near!or!to!operate.!!
Make$sure$your$digger$is$out$of$the$reach$of$children.$$Do$not$use$this$
equipment$when$children$are$present.$$

Tube!Connection!Means!
!
The$digger$tubing$is$assembled$with$5/16-18$x$½”$Steel$Hex$Head$Screws,$a$
5/16”$lock$washer$and$a$5/16”$flat$washer.$$Note:$$A$little$WD-40$oil$can$keep$
screws$from$rusting$in$place.$
$
To$assemble,$the$male$section$of$tubing$is$inserted$into$the$female$section$of$
tubing$and$the$hex$screws$used$to$secure$them$in$place.$$$
$
$
$
There$are$two$joints,$a$handle$joint$that$joins$the$handle$assembly$to$the$
extension$tube.$$Another$joins$the$extension$tube$to$the$top$of$the$digger$head$
assembly$tube$as$shown$above.$

The$hex$screw,$lock$washer,$and$flat$washer$come$screwed$into$the$proper$holes$in$
the$digger.$$Unscrew$these;$Insert$the$handle$male$tube$into$the$female$end$of$the$
extension$tube$and$thread$in$the$screw$with$fingers,$with$lock$washer$first,$and$flat$
washer$next$to$the$vacuum$tube.$

5/16”-18x1/2”$hex$screw,$lock$washer,$flat$washer$

Insert$the$screw$with$washers$by$fingers$first.$

The$5/16-18$x1/2”$Hex$Head$Screws$require$a$½”$wrench$to$tighten.$
$
Tighten$the$Hex$Screw$snug,$do$not$over$tighten$or$strip$threads.$$Call$Cat$6$Tools$if$
you$need$some$extra$hardware$or$order$online$from$any$hardware$supplier$such$as$
McMaster-Carr.$$Periodically$lubricate$the$threads$on$the$$internal$weld$nuts$with$
WD-40$or$other$oil.$

•Your$assembled$digger$vacuum$tube$will$look$like$the$photo$below$when$
fully$connected$with$for$Hex$Screws,$lock$nuts$and$washers.$

The!Digger!Head!
!
•The$digger$head$consists$of$three$components,$the$suction$tube$with$a$
flange,$the$round$saw$blade,$and$the$scraper$blade$and$dowel$pins$
assembly.$$The$digger$head$comes$assembled$with$4$$(5/16-18x1”)$bolts$
with$Nyloc$nuts.$$The$saw$blade$and$the$scraper$blade$assembly$are$both$
replaceable.$$$

•The$Bi-Metal$saw$blade$is$extremely$hard$and$rarely$needs$any$attention.$$
Remember$that$it$will$cut$through$metal,$so$if$you$dig$next$to$a$steel$water$
pipe$or$electrical$conduit$you$could$cut$through$the$side$pretty$fast.$

$
•The$dowels$are$made$of$softer$metal.$$If$these$become$too$rounded,$and$you$
feel$that$a$sharper$point$is$need,$feel$free$to$use$a$file$on$the$45$deg$angle$
tips$and$remove$metal$until$you$get$a$sharp$point$again.$$You$can$also$use$a$
powered$grinding$wheel.$$Be$careful$to$not$remove$too$much.$$You$want$to$
keep$the$points$about$the$same$height$above$the$saw$blade.$$Wear$gloves.$

•The$dowels$provide$a$very$high$pressure$point$to$penetrate$the$ground.$$
The$most$important$one$being$the$point.$$Feel$free$to$sharpen$it$if$you$get$
into$tough$ground.$$$

Using!the!Digger!
!
To$use$the$digger,$attach$a$2-1/2$inch$vacuum$hose$to$the$top$of$the$digger$vacuum$
pipe.$$The$2-1/2$inch$hose$that$comes$with$larger$shop$vacuums$will$have$a$loose$fit$
and$will$easily$rotate.$$The$following$photos$show$the$hose$and$digger$open$ends$
prior$to$attachment.!

The$following$photo$shows$the$vacuum$hose$attached$over$the$open$end$of$the$
digger$vacuum$tube.$$This$connection$will$be$loose$enough$that$the$hose$will$easily$
swing$back$and$forth.$$This$will$help$keep$the$hose$from$swinging$while$you$are$
rotating$the$digger.$$A$sealed$vacuum$connection$is$not$required.$$Some$air$coming$
through$at$this$point$in$the$suction$line$actually$helps$transport$dirt$through$the$
vacuum$hose$and$will$keep$the$hose$connection$clear$of$dirt.$$

The$following$picture$shows$a$Cat$6$Tool’s$low$loss$vacuum$hose$with$hard$hose$cuff$
attached$to$the$digger.$$This$custom$made$cuff$also$has$a$loose$fit$on$the$vacuum$
tube$$

When$digging,$only$a$slight$downward$force$is$required.$$The$object$is$to$scrape$the$
ground$to$produce$smaller$particles$for$the$constant$air$velocity$to$pickup$and$
transport$to$the$vacuum.$$You$do$not$want$to$overwhelm$the$vacuum$with$large$
clumps$of$dirt,$but$to$feed$it$steadily.$$The$back$and$forth$rotation$should$be$an$easy$
45$to$60$degrees.$$$$

As$you$penetrate$the$ground,$the$progress$will$be$slow$for$the$first$few$inches$until$
the$digger$saw$blade$penetrates$the$ground.$$You$will$hear$the$dirt$particles$
traveling$through$the$vacuum$hose.$$As$soon$as$the$saw$blade$penetrates$the$
ground,$a$vacuum$will$start$to$form$in$the$digger$head$and$the$air$velocity$will$
greatly$increase$inside$the$digger$head.$$Do$not$remove$the$air$hose$while$the$dirt,$
sand,$and$gravel$are$traveling$through$the$hose.$$The$momentum$of$the$particles$will$
continue$to$move$at$high$velocities;$over$100$mph$and$can$cause$eye$damage.$$It$is$
strongly$suggested$that$you$wear$safety$glasses.$$$Even$so,$if$you$have$to$remove$the$
hose,$keep$your$face$away$from$the$digger$vacuum$tube$outlet.$$The$most$dangerous$
situation$is$when$two$people$are$at$the$digger$and$one$person$removes$the$hose$
without$telling$the$other$person.$$So!wear!eye!protection!at!all!times.$

While$you$are$digging,$small$rocks$and$gravel$in$the$hole$will$actually$help$in$
pulverizing$the$soil$to$make$smaller$particles$for$easy$transport.$$As$the$small$rocks$
move$up$toward$the$vacuum$line,$they$will$be$sucked$into$the$line$to$the$shop$
vacuum.$$Rocks$that$are$too$large$will$stay$in$the$hole.$$These$loose$rocks$can$easily$
be$removed$with$the$shop$vacuum$hose$after$the$digger$is$removed.$$Turn$off$the$
vacuum,$remove$the$hose$from$the$top$of$the$digger$and$put$it$into$the$hole$and$turn$
the$vacuum$back$on.$$$Use$the$same$procedure$to$clean$out$your$hole$once$you$are$
finished.$$$
$
Obstructions!
$
Invariably$you$will$run$into$obstructions.$$If$a$rock$gets$between$the$sidewall$of$the$
hole$and$the$digger$head,$it$can$bind$the$digger.$$Just$lift$the$digger$up$6$inches$or$so$
and$let$the$rock$fall$into$the$hole.$$$
$
Your$are$being$reminded$here$again:$$Make$sure$you$know$where$you$are$digging$
and$if$there$are$any$wires,$cables,$or$pipes$under$the$digger.$$The$digger$blade$will$
cut$through$metal$pipe$and$will$sever$electrical$conduit$and$underground$cables.$$To$
protect$yourself,$$wear$gloves.$$Dig$as$if$you$know$you$will$be$digging$into$a$conduit$
or$cable.$$Learn$the$feel$of$the$digger$and$you$will$be$able$to$sense$obstructions$
easily.$$Pull$the$digger$out$of$the$ground,$clean$the$hole$and$visually$look$at$the$
obstructions.$
$
Impediments!
!
The$digger$works$on$the$principle$of$Wind$Erosion.$$Water,$as$one$might$expect$will$
be$the$biggest$impediment$to$this$principle.$$The$digger$works$best$in$dry$soils$up$to$
about$50%$moisture.$$Wet$clay$will$tend$to$clog$up$the$digger$head.$$It$will$dry$on$the$
blades.$This$can$be$unclogged$easily$with$a$screwdriver,$as$most$of$the$clogging$will$
occur$right$at$the$entrance$to$the$digger$head.$$Washing$the$digger$head$with$water$
can$also$be$done.$$Soil$that$is$too$wet$will$not$work$well.$$$
$
The$digger,$well$suited$for$most$materials,$it$was$not$made$for$ROCK.$$$The$best$way$
to$deal$with$rocks$is$to$use$other$implements$to$make$the$hole$bigger$to$remove$the$
rock$or$to$move$your$hole.$$If$the$soil$is$too$wet,$our$Core$Digger$that$is$made$to$pull$
out$plugs$of$soil,$may$be$more$suitable.$$In$some$cases,$just$using$the$vacuum$hose$
will$work.$$
$
Different!Digger!Heads!
$
We$have$designed$the$digger$heads$to$be$interchangeable$with$our$universal$digger$
head$connection.$$All$of$the$Holey-Moley$Digger$heads$have$a$four$bolt$connection$to$
the$universal$adapter.$To$make$life$easier,$we$have$made$Quick$Change$Heads$that$
have$the$lower$vacuum$tube$attached.$$It$is$then$only$two$screws$to$change$out$the$
digger$head.$$All$you$will$need$is$one$handle$and$extension$tube$assembly$and$most$

of$the$digger$heads$and$extension$tubes$will$be$interchangeable.$$This$will$allow$you$
to$switch$digger$heads$with$changing$hole$requirements.$$$
