1. INTRODUCTION
This manual describes the procedure recommended by CenterVue to disinfect the COMPASS
device. The procedure can be applied before each use if necessary. This manual also contains
suggestions to maximize safety of the operator against possible biohazards associated with the
subjects being tested.
The procedure described in this manual is different and more aggressive than
the regular cleaning procedure described in the device operating manual and
has been made available only because of the extraordinary circumstances
caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Some parts of the device are not meant for frequent disinfection and may be
damaged and/or altered after some time.
Use of disinfectants other than those indicated in this manual presents major
contraindications.
2. GENERAL PRECAUTIONS DURING USE
The following precautions during use are particularly useful to reduce the need for device
disinfection:
•Have the subjects being tested and the operators of the device always wear a
mask
•Direct the subject being tested not to speak when placed in front of the device
•During the Covid-19 pandemic it is advisable to stop using the removable light
shield (also “Magnetic hood”, see Fig. 3). As an alternative, disinfect it after each
use by spraying it with a disinfectant

3. DISINFECTION PROCEDURE
Turn the device off and disconnect the power cord from mains before proceeding with the
disinfection.
3.1 Disinfecting the front lens
Wipe the front lens using photographic cleaning paper (e.g. Edmund Optics NT53-984) or a
single-use microfiber cloth soaked in pure Isopropyl alcohol. Press lightly the wet cloth on the front
lens surface. Starting from the center of the lens, wipe it with a circular movement, very slowly, only
for one complete rotation. The exiting movement (i.e. moving away from the lens) has to be made
radially, towards the border. Do not reuse the wiping cloth after one pass.
Allow the lens to dry.
3.2 Disinfecting all other parts
Disinfect the parts listed below using Isopropyl alcohol (solution >70%).
Do not pour the disinfectant directly on the device, instead use a disposable towel to apply it.
•silicone chin rest and forehead rest (do not remove them before disinfecting);
•plastic covers, including the back panel of the tablet, the patient button and any cables;
•any aluminum parts;
•screen;
•rear panel (see Fig. 2);
Allow all surfaces to dry before turning on the device again.
The device name printed on the plastic covers is not meant for frequent
disinfections and may degrade if the process is repeated many times.
The front lens is not meant for frequent disinfections and its anti-reflective
coating may be permanently damaged if the process is repeated many times.

4. MAXIMIZING OPERATOR SAFETY
The COMPASS device makes use of a tablet which is connected to the device by means of a
standard USB2 cable.
Purchase a high-quality, 2+meters long USB2 cable and use it to connect the tablet to the device
instead of the cable supplied with the device.
INISTRUCTIONS TO OPERATORS:
•lift the tablet and move away from the device before allowing the patient to get
close
•have the patient position herself/himself in front of the device
•provide all necessary instructions to the patient concerning how to perform the test
•use the tablet from a distance to control the device during the test
This kind of operating modality is only possible thanks to the fully automated operation capabilities
of the device and will ensure safe distance from the subject being tested, eliminating the need for
protective shields or alike.
WARNINGS:
•frequently moving the tablet may result in a damage to the USB cable and/or to
the USB connector of the tablet
•use of a cable longer than supplied with the device may result in more frequent
error conditions (tablet gets disconnected from device)
