Introduction
Thank you for choosing this Chord UP2 portable UHF wireless system. The UP2 system is designed to offer a
flexible wireless platform for performance and communication applications. Please read this manual before
using this equipment to avoid damage through incorrect operation and to get the best performance from your
purchase.

Warning
To prevent the risk of damage, do not expose any of the components to rain or moisture.
If liquids are spilled on any component, stop using immediately, allow unit to dry out and have checked by
qualified personnel before further use.
Avoid impact or stressing of components and connectors or over-stretching of the cables.
No user serviceable parts inside transmitter or receiver - refer servicing to qualified service personnel.
Safety
•Avoid ingress of water or particles into the transmitter or receiver
•Use alkaline or NiMH batteries in the bodypack receiver and remove if unused for long periods.
•Observe the correct polarity when replacing batteries
Placement
•Ensure good line-of-sight contact between transmitter and receiver for best reception
•Keep all components out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
•Do not place heavy objects on top of the receiver or transmitter
•Keep the transmitter and receiver away from damp or dusty environments.
Cleaning
•Use a soft cloth with a neutral detergent to clean the body of the transmitter and/or receiver.
•To avoid damage, do not use solvents to clean the components
•Sterile wipes may be used on over-ear headphones –be sure to avoid ingress of fluids

Batteries
The UP2 transmitter and receiver both operate from 2 x AA batteries. To load these, grip and gently
squeeze the sides of the lower front part of the beltpack and pull the flap forward to reveal the
battery compartment (for optional handheld transmitters, unscrew the lower part of the
microphone). Insert 2 x AA batteries (alkaline or NiMH) into the compartment, taking care to observe
the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment. Once batteries are loaded, close the
battery cover.
Transmitter beltpack connections
The UP2 set (171.920UK) is supplied with a neckband microphone and over-ear headphones.
Connect the neckband microphone to the 3.5mm MIC IN jack (1) on the top of the UP2-BT
transmitter. Alternatively, any of the chord replacement neckband or lavalier microphones which
terminate to a mono 3.5mm plug may be used.
Additionally, the UP2-BT transmitter has an AUX 3.5mm input jack (2) which can be connected to
any stereo line level source, such as an mp3 player or laptop using the stereo 3.5mm lead provided.
Note: the UP2 system operates in mono and all stereo inputs are summed to mono for transmission
Receiver beltpack connections
Connect the supplied over-ear headphones to the AUDIO OUT jack (5) on top of the UP2-BR
receiver. Alternatively, any headphones with an impedance of 16Ωor more can be used or this
output can be connected to the line input of a PA system, recording device or camera audio input.
Additionally, a 4-pole 3.5mm lead is provided so that the REC.OUT
jack on the UP2-BR can be connected to a smart phone headphone
jack for a microphone input. This can be useful for recording to the
smart phone or even as a hands-free set, using the headset
microphone for speaking and the headphones for listening.

The UP2 system is designed to be expandable for use with 1 or 2 signals (on 2 separate UHF
channels) addressing multiple listeners.

Operation
When all connections are made, position the neckband microphone on the head of the
vocalist/presenter so that it is situated at the side of the mouth to pick up speech without excessive
popping or breath noise. Clip the UP2-BT beltpack to clothing where convenient.
Move the slide switch (3) on the beltpack (or handheld) transmitter from the OFF position to the first
notch (CH1). The LED on the front of the beltpack will light.
The listener(s) should wear the headphones and beltpack and turn the volume control on the UP2-BR
receiver (7) down fully and move the slide switch (8) from the OFF position to the first notch (CH1).
The LED on the front of the beltpack will light. Gradually turn the volume control up to the level
required. If all is set up correctly, the listener(s) should now be able to hear the voice of the
vocalist/presenter. The same will apply for any line level signal connected to the AUX input of the
UP2-BT transmitter.
If using with a video camera, the UP2-BR is supplied with a mount for a hot-shoe platform and the
AUDIO OUT can be connected to an aux line input on the camera.

Frequency selection
The UP2 system has 2 selectable UHF carrier frequencies, which can be used at the same time.
However, any transmitter or receiver can only operate on one frequency at a time.
Where there is only one speech or audio signal, the selectable channels are only needed if there is
interference on one of the carrier frequencies. Just select a clear channel to use.
In applications where 2 people are speaking (such as dual language translation), one speaker can
transmit on CH1 and the other on CH2 and the listeners can select which speaker they need to listen
to by switching channels on their UP2-BR receivers.
Likewise, for in-ear monitoring, it is possible for performers to switch between 2 different monitor
mixes which are transmitter separately on CH1 and CH2.
For “always on” 2-way communications, it is possible to use 2 UP2 sets with each user having both
transmitter and receiver beltpacks. One user will transmit on CH1 and listen to CH2 whilst the other
user will transmit on CH2 and listen to CH1.
When not in use, switch off transmitters and receivers and remove the batteries if not being used for
long periods.
