EFFECTIVITY:
PLATES AND SKIN
1. DESCRIPTION
This section describes the exterior covering of the fuselage which makes up the skin. Also included are the
empennage access panels and belly fire shields.
A. Fuselage Skin
The fuselage skin is composed primarily of bi-directional E-glass fiberglass with a PVC foam core.
Some areas are of solid laminate construction. Areas around the passenger door are reinforced with
unidirectional fiberglass.

2. MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
A. Empennage Access Panels (See Figure 53-301)
(1) Removal - Empennage Access Panels
(a) Serials 2222 & subs - if removing Access Panel RE3:
1Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.
2Secure suction cup handle to access panel.
(b) Remove screws securing access panel to empennage.
(c) Remove access panel.
(2) Installation - Empennage Access Panels
Note: Ensure contour of access panel matches fuselage.
(a) Serials 2222 & subs - if installing Access Panel RE3:
1Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.
2Secure suction cup handle to access panel.
(b) Position access panel to empennage.
WARNING: Installation of incorrect length screw in access panel may cause inter-
ference with pitch control system.
(c) Install screws securing access panel to empennage.
(3) Removal - Empennage Access Panel RE3 Seal
(a) Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.

EFFECTIVITY:
CAUTION: Prolonged exposure to adhesive cleaner can damage the exterior paint fin-
ish. Wipe up any excess cleaner immediately.
(b) Apply masking tape to perimeter of installation area to protect exterior paint finish.
(c) Remove residue from installation area using scraper and cleaner.
(d) Remove masking tape, and solvent clean installation area. (Refer to 20-30)
(4) Installation - Empennage Access Panel RE3 Seal
(a) Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.
(b) Solvent clean installation area with isopropyl alcohol. (Refer to 20-30)
(c) Place one end of seal into position at installation area, maintaining seal 0.00 to 0.13 inch
from edge of installation perimeter.
(d) Press seal firmly to installation area making sure that the ends of the seal butt together,
and cut seal to length.
(e) Score foam seal at hole locations with utility knife.
(f) Using pin gage, remove excess portions of seal at hole locations.
(g) Using vacuum cleaner, remove all debris from installation area.
(5) Cleaning - Empennage Access Panel RE3 Seal
Periodically clean seal with isopropyl alcohol to ensure proper seal.

B. Belly Fire Shield (See Figure 53-302)
(1) Removal - Belly Fire Shield
(a) Remove tail pipe. (Refer to 78-20)
(b) Drill out rivets securing fire shield to fuselage.
(c) Serials 1423 & subs: Using a utility knife, carefully cut through firewall sealant securing for-
ward edge of fire shield to fuselage.
(d) Remove fire shield and mounting tape from fuselage.
(2) Installation - Belly Fire Shield
(a) Acquire necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.
(b) Clean bonding surfaces with isopropyl alcohol.
(c) Apply tape to left, right, and aft edges of fire shield. At aft corners, leave a 0.15 inch (3.81
mm) gap between tape pieces to allow for moisture drainage. Align fire shield with fuse-
lage rivet holes.
(d) Position fire shield to fuselage and secure with rivets.
(e) Smooth surface of fire shield with hands until tape is firmly adhered and no air pockets
exist between fire shield and fuselage.
(f) Serials 1423 & subs: Using firewall sealant, seal forward edge of fire shield to fuselage.
(g) Serials 1423 & subs: Remove excess sealant from fire shield and fuselage.
(h) Install tail pipe. (Refer to 78-20)
