Introduction
Dear Customer,
We want to thank you for purchasing one of the products from our Time Acquisition ZE03 Series.
With this unit you have acquired a product built to the latest state of engineering. Its operation is simple
and easily to understood. Nevertheless please read this Operation Manual carefully for optimum
utilization of all of its features.

1. Intended Use
The intended use of the Time Acquisition ZE03 is the acquisition of booking operations which are used
to determine the times of attendance of employees. To operate the system the user has to press an “In”
or “Out” key and then hold the Transponder assigned to the user next to the Terminal. The integrated
electronic circuitry recognizes the Transponder and stores the Transponder Number as well as the
signal from the pressed key along with the present date and time into memory. The PC Software ZE03
included in the original shipment allows comfortable administration and interpretation of the acquired
data.
Any use other than the one pointed out above is not admissable.
Design and construction of these Time Acquisition Products correspond to all European and national
requirements for Electro Magnetic Compatibility. The units carry the CE681!-sign, the conformity has
been proven. All appropriate commentaries and records are in the possession of the manufacturer.
The declaration of conformity can be read back at www.codatex.com.
2. Important Informations
The integrated antenna of the unit in conjunction with its electronic circuitry creates an
oscillator circuit which builds up considerable high voltages on the antenna terminals.
Therefore do not operate the units in opened condition and avoid any physical contact with the
antenna terminals during operation. In any case keep children at a save distance from the
device, especially if it is in opened condition.
In order to allow sabotage save operation do by all means mount the Time Acquisition Terminal –
unreachable for non-authorized personnel –inside of a building.
We cannot take liability for damages caused by improper and/or careless handling of the Time
Acquisition Products.
For use with the Time Acquisition Terminals you need specific Transponders1) which are suitable for the
Terminal’s reader.
Notes on Installation of the Time Acquisition Terminals:
When installing the Time Acquisition Terminal ensure a clean and dry environment.
For protection of the AC Power Supply Line use a slow-acting 2.5 A fuse.
In case a bell transformer is used to provide the necessary power it has to correspond with the
requirements according to EN 61558-2-8 (DIN VDE 0570 Part 2-8: Special requirements for bell and
ringer transformers).

4. Putting Time Acquisition Terminals into Operation
In shipping conditions the Time Acquisition Terminal is in „Setup“ mode and not yet operable. When
after unpacking the Terminal is connected to any power supply one of the two keys has to be pressed
and held for at least 1 second in order to switch the Terminal ON. Subsequently the display will show
the following message:
and within a short time period:
In this condition of the Terminal no further inputs are possible!
ATTENTION: To put into operation the Terminal must first be initialized by use of the PC
Software included with the shipment.
To accomplish this, install the PC Software (this may take up to 15 minutes depending on the type of
PC used), then connect the Terminal to the serial port of your PC and start the Time Acquisition
Software.
Under Menu Item „History Data, Terminal“ you have to create a new Terminal and issue a name. By
doing this a serial number is generated within the Terminal which cannot be changed anymore. This
serves to identify from which Terminal a booking has been loaded.
Together with the issuing of the serial number the date and time values of the Terminal are updated to
the present values of date and time of the PC.

ATTENTION: Check and correct –if necessary –the present date and time values of your PC.
Otherwise future bookings may be assigned false dates and/or times by the Terminal !
By appropriate putting into operation after initialization of the Terminals the display will show the correct
date, time and day of the week as indicated below:
The symbol I/Oin the lower right hand corner of the display indicates that the Terminal is connected to a
Data Acquisition Device (PC or Datalogger). After disconnecting the serial interface cable the display
will show the present weekday instead of the above mentioned symbol.
From this point of time the Time Acquisition Terminal is fully operable and all your bookings will by use
of the appropriate key be stored in memory.
5. Functional Description
Operation of the Time Acquisition Terminal is simple and time saving. Press either one of the “In” or
“Out” keys and hold the Transponder close to the antenna symbol on the Terminal. The display will
show the following messages (with every booking also the background illumination of the display will be
switched on):

and after recognition of the Transponder shortly following each other:
At the same time a beep signal will sound.
This indicates that your booking operation has been correctly acquired and stored in the Terminal’s
memory.
If the same Transponder is used for the same operation immediately following each other within 1
minute’s time the Terminal will recognize a double booking and yield an error message:
At the same time the beep signal will sound 4 times in short succession !

If you need to know how many of the 2,900 bookings possible in your Terminals’ memory have already
been taken, you can recall the present memory holding by pressing and holding both Terminal keys for
at least 1 second:
This way you can estimate the approximate time until the memory will be full and a data transfer into the
PC becomes necessary.
If the memory is filled up to a balance of 100 bookings (2,800 of 2,900), a warning will appear on the
display which will toggle with the date’s display:

In this case connect the Terminal to your PC as soon as possible and transfer all bookings into your PC
program or use your datalogger to transfer the data from the Terminal into the datalogger.
If in this case you carry out another 100 bookings without data transfer the Terminal’s memory is full
and no further bookings are possible. The display will then permanently show the message “Memory
Full”.
ATTENTION: Under the condition „Memory Full“ further bookings are only possible after all
Terminal data have been transferred to the PC or Datalogger.
Even after transmission of Terminal data to your PC or Datalogger all data will remain in memory until
they are overwritten by new bookings. The memory of the Terminal is filled in a cyclic mode, i. e. the
respective oldest booking is overwritten by the most recent one. When transmitting data to PC or
Datalogger always the entire memory contents are transmitted. This also pertains to older bookings
which possibly have already been transferred at an earlier date. The PC Software will recognize these
older bookings and filter them out. This way you can be certain that in case of any data loss you are
able to restore the maximum possible number of older bookings.
Automatic Switchover Summertime/Wintertime:
The Time Acquisition Terminal provides an automatic switchover which does adjust the time from
Summertime to Wintertime and vice versa on the last Sunday of March and October.
The present status of the Terminal can be distinguished by a blinking colon on the display. During
Wintertime the colon flashes once per second, during Summertime also once per second the colon
changes to a single dot.

6. Conversion Table Unit to Wall Mount Unit
The Time Acquisition Terminal can be used as a table unit as well as wall mount unit.
It is for you to decide in what form you want to use the Terminal. In shipping condition the Terminal is
pre-mounted as a table unit.
If you want to operate the Terminal as a wall mounted unit proceed as follows:
1) Make sure to disconnect the Terminal from the power supply.
2) Carefully unscrew the 4 screws on top of the casing with a fitting screwdriver.
3) Lift and separate the top of the unit slowly from the base part. Since the top is connected to the base
by means of a ribbon cable, do this rather carefully.
Ensure furthermore not to touch the printed cicuit board with any pointed object since this could harm
the electronic circuitry.
4) Turn the top part by 180 degrees and carefully replace it on the base part. When doing this, ensure
that the ribbon cable will not become loose and will further not be jammed when replacing the top part.
5) Re-screw top and base part by use of the 4 screws previously taken out.
If you want to mount the unit fixed to a wall, proceed as follows:
Disconnect the Terminal from the power supply.
Carefully unscrew the 4 screws on top of the casing with a fitting screwdriver.
Lift and separate the top of the unit slowly from the base part. Since the top is connected to the base by
means of a ribbon cable, do this rather carefully.
You now have access to the mounting holes in the base part
of the unit. Mark the positions of the drilling holes to the wall
and drill the appropriate holes für the mounting dowels.
Before mounting the base unit to the wall you will have to decide the way you want to lead the
connecting lines to the Terminal.
There are the following possibilities:
1) You want -also with fixed wall mounting -to use the terminal connections led outside for power
supply and serial interface.
If you want to operate the Time Acquisition Terminal even in case of a power failure, you have to
connect a 9 V block battery for backup to the terminals provided for in the battery compartment.
Following this you can screw the base unit to the wall, carefully replace the top part and secure it to the
mounted base part by use of the screws taken out previously.
Now the supply power can be connected to the socket provided for on the outside of the Terminal by
means of the AC Power Line Adapter included in the shipment.
Furthermore the serial interface cable provided for in the shipment can –if required –be connected to
the socket (RJ11, Western) provided for on the bottom of the casing.
2) You want to mount the connection cable in such a way, that it is not accessable from the outside.
To accomplish this the power supply and interface cables have to be led through the wall (or through a
switch box especially for this reason mounted behind the Time Acquisition Terminal) to the Terminal
casing. Further lead the various cables through the battery compartment (when wall mounting the
battery cover may be omitted) into the Terminal casing.

Potentiometer
On the circuit board there are two screw terminals (see photo marking) which
serve the polarity save connection of the power supply lines (9 VDC or 7.5
VAC).
After drawing the power supply lines (as well as inserting the battery for voltage backup, if required), the
base part of the unit can be fixed to the wall and the power supply lines can be screwed to the
terminals.
The interface lines have to be soldered directly to the solder lugs provided for on the printed circuit
board (see photo marking).
Pay attention to correct wiring of the connections:
After all lines have been connected, replace the top part of the casing and screw it to the base part by
use of the screws previously taken out.
Make sure that none of the lines are jammed and no short circuit is created on the printed circuit board.
Your Time Acquisition Terminal is now ready for operation.
Setting the Display Contrast:
When converting the device from table to wall mounting or because of
temperature changes new settings of the display contrast may become
necessary.
Proceed as follows:
-Open the Terminal as described above.
-On the main PCB you find a potentiometer next to the processing
unit (see photo).
-Slowly and carefully turn the potentiometer back and forth until you
have reached an optimum contrast.

7. Battery Operation
You can also operate the Time Acquisition Terminal or protect it against accidential power failure by use
of a 9 V block battery. Time and date of the Terminal are powered by a separate battery. Informations
will thus not be lost in case of a power failure even without the 9 V battery backup.
For battery operation please exclusively use Alkaline type batteries of the so called “High Energy” type,
such as Varta No. 4922, E-Block, 6LR61or Duracell Ultra MN1604, etc.
During normal operation approximately 1,000 bookings can be carried out with one „High Energy“ type
9 V battery.
To protect the environment however please operate the Terminal -whenever possible -by use of the
AC Power Line Adapter included with the shipment. Do use the battery only as a backup if there is no
AC mains outlet close by.
For battery operation you have to open the battery cover on the back of the device and connect the
battery block to the battery clip provided for.
During battery operation the display of the Terminal will show the following symbol:
When battery operated the Terminal will automatically switch OFF after appr. 10 seconds. In order to
switch ON again one of the keys of the Terminal has to be pressed and held for at least 1 second.
Because of this the energy consumption of the unit is effectivelly minimized and a considerably longer
battery life time is made possible.
ATTENTION: After switching the Terminal back ON again the booking procedure has to be
started with yet another key stroke. The first pressing of the keys only serves the „Wakeup“ of
the Terminal.
8. PC Software „ZE03“

Installation of the PC Program „ZE03“:
1. Insert the attached CD-ROM into your CD-ROM-Drive.
2. Execute the Program „setup.exe“.
3. Follow the instructions on the PC screen for execution of the Setup program.
ATTENTION: The installation of Windows .NET FRAMEWORK will take a considerable amount of
time. The progress bar will repeatedly run through the display window. Please do not interrupt
these proceedings, which may take up to 10 minutes.
4. After successful installation you can start the program over the Windows Start Menu under
Programs/Codatex with ZE03 Software.

Operation of the „ZE03 Software“ program is described by means of Online Help Functions directly in
the program application.
In the Database folder you find the Demo Database „demo.bak“ which can be loaded by use of Menu
Item „Process / Restore Database”. Here you can see by various examples, how bookings are carried
out and evaluated by the Software.
By restoring the empty Database „zedb.bak“ you can start with an empty database at any time.

9. Programmer Table Station
The Programmer for the Time Acquisition ZE03 is a supplementary device for direct operation with your
PC. It serves the acquisition of Transponders when assigning to personnel.
If your Time Acquisition Terminal is being operated at a location remote to your PC, the acquisition of
new employees and the assignment of Transponders is only possible by removing the Terminal from its
original operating location and connecting it to your PC. To avoid this waste of effort however you can
use the Programmer for the assignment of Transponders.
With your Programmer you cannot carry out any bookings.
Connection of the Programmer to the PC takes place –similar to the Terminal –over the serial interface
by means of the interface cable included in the initial shipment. Also the AC Power Line Adapters are
compatible to both devices.
The Programmer does not need to be registered with your software. As soon as the Programmer is
connected to the PC, the message Terminal “ZE Programmer” will appear in the tool bar in the upper
right.
If required you can also convert the Programmer from the table version to the wall mount version. For
this see the description for the Terminal under Item 6.
10.Datalogger
The Datalogger also is a supplementary device, by which acquired bookings can be easiliy transferred
from the Terminal to the PC.
ATTENTION: In case of putting the Datalogger into operation and –in any case –prior to
fetching data from the Terminal connect the Datalogger to the PC and then start data
transmission. By doing this the date/time in the Datalogger is updated to the values of the PC
and when connected to the Terminal the Terminal is also updated.
When transmitting data to the Datalogger do not use the AC Power Line Adapter since power supply to
the Datalogger is derived from the Terminal. For data transmission from the Terminal connect the
interface cable tightly connected to the Datalogger into the appropriate socket of the Terminal. The
symbol I/Oin the Terminal’s display indicates correct connection. Data transmission is started by
pressing the key on the Datalogger and is indicated by a progress bar in the Terminal’s display.
Data transmission takes appr. 30 seconds. As soon as the data transmission is
completed the display of the Terminal will show the message „D OK“.
Into the Datalogger you can store the data from up to 4 different Terminals.
ATTENTION: Data from a Terminal, which have already been loaded to a Datalogger, cannot be
loaded onto the Datalogger again unless they have in the meantime been transferred and stored
to the PC. This is meant to ensure that no data are lost.
For transmission of data to the PC the AC Power Line Adapter and interface cable included are needed.
In the PC Software ZE03 data transmission is started through Menu Item “Process / Data Transmission“
(can only be activated if the Datalogger is connected).

Operability of the Datalogger is indicated by a green LED, while a red LED will light in case of a data
transmission error only.
ATTENTION: Data transmission to the PC will not work over the interface cable tightly
connected to the Datalogger. This cable may only be used to connect the Datalogger to the
Terminal. Also no AC Power Line Adapter is to be used to supply power to the Datalogger while
it is connected to the Terminal !
11.Care, Maintenance and Disposal
Besides providing the specified voltage and its intended use as a device for acquisition, storage and
interpretation of transponder data the Time Acquisition Products do not require any special care or
maintenace.
A Time Acquisition Product that highly unexpected has become unusable must be disposed of
observing all relevant legal regulations.
12.Debugging
If all notes and regulations of this and other relevant Operation Manuals (Online Help, etc.) are
observed correctly there should be no unexpected malfunctions. If this nevertheless happens to be the
case, please do not attempt to make any own repairs. Return the device to your point of purchase and
have it checked and possibly repaired by a qualified engineer. Opening or improper handling of the
devices will invalidate any guarantee.
