1. About ColdBlock CB15S digester
CB15S
The CB15S digester is made to be used either as
a single unit, or as a module in a CB30S system.
This is the third model in the ColdBlock line
after our original CB6L and CB12L units. All
electronics run along the sides of the unit in a
separated compartment to allow for isolation
from the heating chamber. We recommend use
of the 50 mL small sample test tubes with this
unit. Some test tubes will be provided with your
unit while additional test tubes can be
purchased from one of our ColdBlock sales
associates.
The CB15S unit with test tubes installed.

2. Installing a ColdBlock
2.1 ColdBlock Parts
Your ColdBlock will come to you assembled in two parts: the heating chamber and the Cooling
Block.
Before installing the Cooling Block, installation of the infra-red lamps into the heating chamber is
required.
2.2 IR lamp installation and replacement
Lamp replacement:
WARNING: If the unit was running, turn off the controller, and unplug the controller from the
power source.
Allow the heating chamber to cool down to room temperature before attempting to perform a
lamp replacement.
The IR lamps will come to you in separate packaging to keep them safe during shipment. There are
4 lamps provided per 15 channel unit.
Lamp Installation Steps:
1. Unplug and remove unit from all power sources, this includes the power controller.
2. Remove the top plate and sleeves from the heating chamber to expose the lamp chamber.
3. Using clean gloves hold the lamp by the ceramic white coating and carefully align the lamp
prongs with the lamp holder. Once aligned insert the prongs into holder until flush and secured

3. Cooling Block Set up
3.1 Quick overview
The Cooling Block is integral to the ColdBlock digesters proper operation however it is not essential
and can be operated without the chiller. It is important to note that if the chiller is not used
adjustments to the method will be required.
The Unit will arrive with the Cooling Block packed separately. Cooling Block removal is required to
access lamps for maintenance, set up, or cleaning of any spills.
3.2 Setting up the Cooling Block
Cooling Block Installation Steps:
WARNING: Turn off chiller before disconnecting coolant hosing. When disconnecting pay special
attention to spills.
NOTE: Please heed the general safety procedures outlined in this document such as: allow
adequate cooldown for rest of unit and disconnect power before any set up or break down of unit.
Use good lifting practices when lifting and moving the Cooling Block.

4. Controller and Method Set up
4.1 Quick overview
The controller connects up to two CB15S units and requires a 230V/30 amp power source.
Note: Only use a 230V/30 amp power source. Do not plug into a ‘normal’ wall plug.
4.2 Setting up a Controller
Controller Setup Steps:
WARNING: It is not recommended to run a digestion for more than 30 minutes (1800s) at 100%
power.
Do not Initiate a second digestion without waiting through a cool down period of 2 to 5 minutes
1. Power on the controller using the on / off switch at the back of the controller
2. Turn the Unit(s) you want to use on using the red switches on the front of the controller.

3. Press and hold the ‘up’ or ‘down’ arrow buttons until the electronic display reads the power
setting required for the method. Repeat for Unit 2 if running two CB15S units. The following
image shows a controller set up to run Unit 1 and 2 at 50% power
4. The timer is set in seconds. Currently it is set for 10s in the above method. To add seconds, hit
the arrow up/down under the order of magnitude you want to increase. For example, for a ten-
minute digestion, you would hit the third from the right up arrow 6 times, and the second from
the left arrow once down to get the controller to read 600 seconds.
5. The bottom (orange) number is the number of seconds the digestion will run for, while the top
(red) number is the countdown showing how many seconds remain in the digestion.
6. From here, press the Start button to begin a digestion. CB15S will shut off the lamps at the end
of the timer.
