Overview of the DAT Drive
The Compaq DAT tape drive is a high-capacity data storage device that uses
DAT (Digital Audio Tape) technology. The tape drive provides low-cost,
reliable data protection for entry-level servers, workstations, and computers.
With a backup software application it can provide up to a 2:1 compression
ratio of data storage.

Disaster Recovery Feature
Your new tape drive supports Disaster Recovery (DR) provided by various
Compaq approved tape backup software vendors. With a few simple steps,
your new tape drive becomes a bootable device that will boot your server and
perform an automatic system backup from a DDS4 tape cartridge.
DR support for different operating systems is being added and updated
frequently. To learn of the latest operating system support for DR, visit the

Reliability of Backup Devices
The reliability of any backup device is directly related to its duty cycle (the
number of hours per day that the device is in use). For example, if a tape drive
designed for 1-GB backups is being used to back up a 10-GB computer, that
drive will need accelerated preventive maintenance (especially head cleaning),
and will experience premature aging and reliability problems.
Backup Hardware Capacity
The best method for building hardware reliability into a backup strategy is to
ensure that the backup hardware is matched to the computers. Table 1-1 relates
various computers with the appropriate DAT tape drives. If you need partial
backups in addition to the routine backups, select the next larger drive size.

Projected Duty Cycle
The projected duty cycle of the DAT drive is an important consideration in
determining the amount of time required for backup of a given system as well
as how often it will be necessary to clean the tape drive’s read/write heads.
For example, a nightly, unattended, complete 8-GB backup is well within the
capacity of one 4/8-GB DAT drive. However, at a backup rate between 1
GB/hour and 1.75 GB/hour, that tape drive will be in operation for 6 to 8 hours
every night. With this amount of usage, the tape drive’s read/write heads
should be cleaned every twelfth night (approximately 100 hours of use). If the
drive heads are not cleaned, soft errors and overall backup time will increase
eventually causing the drive to fail. See the section, “Importance of Routine
Cleaning,” in Chapter 4 for more information on cleaning the tape drive.
Cassette Formats
The Compaq DAT drive supports industry-standard Digital Data Storage
(DDS), Digital Data Storage Data Compression (DDS-DC), Digital Data
Storage-2 (DDS-2), Digital Data Storage-3 (DDS-3), and Digital Data
Storage-4 (DDS-4) cassette formats.
DDS-3 tape drives only support DDS-3 cassettes and earlier. DDS-2 tape
drives only support DDS-2 cassettes and earlier.
NOTE: Only use cassettes purchased from Compaq qualified vendors.
These formats were introduced by the DDS Manufacturers’ Group and are
approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the
European Computer Manufacturers’ Association (ECMA). The DDS-DC
format is a superset of the DDS format, ensuring backward compatibility with
uncompressed cassettes.

logo are supported for use with the Compaq DAT tape drive.

DDS Logo Media
To identify computer-grade DDS media easily, look for the DDS logos (see
Figure 1-1), including DDS-1, DDS-2, !DDS-3, and "DDS-4. These
indicate that the media meets the DDS specifications laid down by the ECMA,
ISO/IEC, and ANSI standards.

The Media Recognition System (MRS) enables drives to identify DDS-grade
media. DDS MRS cassettes have a series of stripes on the transparent leader at

the beginning of the cassette. The drive can be configured to treat non-MRS
cassettes as write-protected. In other words, the drive will only be allowed to
read non-MRS cassettes, not write to them.
Life Expectancy of Cassettes
All DDS-certified media are designed to withstand at least 2,000 passes.
Under optimum environmental conditions (50 percent relative humidity,
22°C), this is equivalent to about 100 to 150 backup operations. This takes into
account that an area of cassette may have several passes during a backup,
either because streaming (the optimum performance rate where data is sent to
the drive at approximately the same speed as it is written to the cassette media)
cannot be maintained, or the backup software package repeatedly accesses
certain areas of cassette.
Certain extreme conditions reduce the recommended maximum number of
backup operations. These conditions are as follows:
■Environmental conditions
Sustained use at the low end of the humidity specification will reduce
the cassette life.
■Computer performance
The lower the performance of the computer, the more likely that
streaming cannot be maintained and that an increase in the number of
passes over given areas of a cassette will occur.
■Backup Software
The backup software may access certain areas of the cassette frequently,
or there may be a high system overhead that may cause streaming to
stop. Both of these factors increase the number of cassette passes in a
given area.
Data Compression
The Compaq DAT drive ships from the factory with data compression enabled
for writing. The drive is equipped with onboard DDS-DC hardware, using the
Data Compression Lempel Ziv (DCLZ) algorithm. In this mode, data is always
compressed when writing to the cassette, but the drive is capable of reading
both compressed and uncompressed cassettes. For the drive to write
uncompressed data, you must change the data compression setting.

All drives use jumper pins and/or dip switches. Some hardware settings may
be overridden by way of software. Consult your backup application software
documentation for the data compression enabling and disabling procedures.

Device Drivers
Drivers for Intel-based systems are located on the Compaq SmartStart and
Support Software CD, the Support Software Diskettes, and the Tape Drive
Supplemental Driver CD in the Storage Management Solutions package that
came with the tape drive. You can use SmartStart to create Support Software
Diskettes for specific operating systems.
For all other operating systems contact a Compaq authorized service provider.

ASPI Support
The README.COM on the Novell Software Support Diskette (NSSD)
outlines the specific drivers you need to support ASPI tape backup
applications.
If you are using a tape backup application that uses the ASPI, such as
ARCserve provided by Compaq or Seagate BackupExec, refer to the
information provided with your application NLM to determine whether it uses
ASPI.
The Compaq ASPI drivers, CPQSASPI.NLM Device Driver Functional
Specification (DDFS) and NWASPI.NLM NetWare Peripheral Architecture
(NWPA), provide ASPI support for the Compaq SCSI architecture for
applications that require this interface.
