Intended Use
The Contour Core Sculpting System is intended to stimulate healthy muscles in
order to improve or facilitate muscle appearance and performance.
The Contour Core Sculpting System is not intended to be used in
conjunction with therapy or treatment of medical diseases or medical
conditions of any kind. None of the Contour Core Sculpting System
training programs is designed for injured or ailing muscles and its use on such
muscles is contraindicated.
The Contour Core Sculpting System electrical impulses allow the
triggering of action potentials on motor neurons of motor nerves
(excitations). These excitations of motor neurons are transmitted to the
muscle fibers via the motor end plate where they generate mechanical
muscle fiber responses that correspond to muscle work. Depending on the
parameters of the electrical impulses (pulse frequency, duration of
contraction, duration of rest, total session duration), different types of muscle
work can be imposed on the stimulated muscles.
The various types of muscle work that the Contour Core Sculpting
System can impose on the stimulated muscles are able to improve or facilitate
muscle performance, firm, tighten and strengthen muscles.
The Contour Core Sculpting System can therefore be considered a
technique for muscle training.

What is EMS
Introduction to EMS (electrical muscle stimulation)
EMS devices generate electrical impulses that trigger an action potential in
muscle nerve fibers (motor neurons). In response to this, the motor neuron
produces a response known as a twitch. Twitches performed in succession
generated by EMS are the same as a muscle contraction generated by the
nervous system in response to regular exercise. The work performed by the
muscle fibers varies according to the frequency (# of pulses per second) of the
electrical stimulation – 10 impulses per second produces low excitement of
fibers and 100 impulses per second produces high working power in
the fibers.
What can ems do?
Electromuscle stimulation can accomplish three things that are outside of the
brain's capabilities:
• It can recruit up to 100% of the muscle bers in any muscle group, to
performworkorexercise.Thebraincanonlyrecruit(use)about45-50%ofthe
muscle fibers.
•It can target specic muscle bers: slow twitch, fast twitch, very fast
twitch fibers… the brain cannot discern between these fiber types.
•Itcancreatemoremuscleactivityinmusclesbeingworked.Thebrainhas
a “limiting switch” that always keeps some of the muscle in reserve for
emergency purposes.
What are the benefits of ems?
Scientific research has demonstrated that there are several physiological
benefits to using EMS in conjunction with a traditional training program for
fitness and sports performance:
• Recruitment of fast-twitch bers The “size principle” or the “Henneman
law” determines the way muscles respond during exercise whereby the
smallest motor units (slow twitch) are activated first because of their low
action potential. As demand on the muscle increases, the larger motor units
(fast twitch) begin to activate. With EMS, this is reversed; the fast twitch
muscles are activated first, thus initiating maximal eccentric movements which
also focus on the fast twitch muscle fibers. This is a boon to those athletes
who are required to perform maximal eccentrics and plyometrics which can be
taxing to the joints and nervous system. Using EMS these athletes can reduce
their volume of these training sessions and get better results with less risk
of injury.
• Increase in Muscle Strength Numerous studies have shown
significant strength gains with EMS. Using an EMS unit for 10 minutes
three times per week for three weeks, sprinters gained 52% in strength.
(Ratton and Cometti) Boxers using EMS on the triceps had strength gains
of 18.5% in the same three weeks with a similar protocol. (Champion and

10
Pousson) In addition, several studies have shown a cross-education benefit
whereby an untrained limb gained strength when the opposite limb was trained
with EMS, just as it would be with traditional exercise.
• Muscle Mass Gains Only a few studies have been done on muscle
hypertrophy in healthy athletes using EMS. In one study, competitive triple
jumpers had size gains of 4 to 8% in the quadriceps in 3 weeks, a 2 to 4
times better result than the control group. (Turostowski,et al.) Competitive
wrestlers experienced a 4.5% improvement in muscle mass after a 3 week
EMS program. (Gillet and Cometti) Other studies have shown that EMS training
can produce more micro-trauma than concentric training therefore leading to
more growth.
• Increase in Vertical Jump/Power A study was conducted on athletes
performing squat jumps and countermovement jumps using EMS for 16
minute sessions three times per week for four and eight weeks. The
experimental group used only EMS and the control group used only regular
strength training. The SJ increased 14% after 4-weeks for training where-
as the CMJincreased17% after 8-weeks of training.Therewas a strength
increaseof11.45%fortheEMSgroupand3.65%forthecontrolgroupoverall.
Furtherresearchshowedthat EMS andplyometrics togetherproducedsignificant|
improvements in the countermovement jumps. (Cometti, Maffiuletti, et al.)
• Speed Increases Since EMS impacts the fast twitch fibers, there is good
reason to believe that it improves speed even though clinical studies are
not yet available. Careful stimulation of the muscles involved in running –
quadriceps, rectus femoris, hamstrings, calves, and the gluteals is vital to avoid
strength imbalances.
• Muscle Recovery When EMS is utilized in sub-tetanic frequency, the
pulsation acts like a massage, increasing blood flow, releasing endorphins,
causing muscle relaxation and helping to breakdown adhesions between
fibers. During recovery, EMS can be used to speed up the muscle ability to
perform at high levels. A study (Gregory) showed that active recovery from EMS is
effective in removing lactate after exhaustive exercise. Compared to post-exer-
cise rest or light aerobic activity to help the body recover, EMS recovery showed
a tendency toward a longer all-out effort than the other forms of recovery.
• Work Beyond Normal Limits Psychological, muscular and cardiovascular
fatigue are limiting factors in any traditional training scenario. With EMS pro-
grams, an athlete can effectively work localized muscles aerobically or anaero-
bically even after they have finished a traditional training session. EMS training
can also take place before traditional training to “pre-fatigue” certain muscle
groups before lifting.

How the Contour Core Sculpting System works:
• The Contour Core Sculpting System features four pre-positioned,
medical-grade Gel Pads, covering the central abdominal muscles and
external obliques.
• Signals from the belt reach out to nerves where they are most
concentrated.
• These nerves branch out to reach all the abdominal muscles (not just
those under the pads) causing them to relax and contract naturally,
exercising all the muscles at the same time.

Training Programs
The Contour Core Sculpting System provides four (4) muscle stimulation
training programs. They correspond to the type of muscle performance the
athlete wishes to improve or maintain. These training programs are:
• Endurance
• Resistance
• Strength
• ExplosiveStrength
Endurance Program
The Contour Core Sculpting System Endurance program imposes an
average medium working level on muscle fibers, and is designed to
target and exercise the slow-twitch (endurance) muscle fibers. This
working level is maintained over a long period (40 minutes per session). The
Endurance program particularly activates the aerobic metabolism of the fibers
during the stimulation session, and increases the VO2 uptake capacity of the
muscles. The purpose is to increase the time the muscle is able to maintain a
medium level of working power or the average power level the muscle is able to
maintain for extended periods of time. The program may be used in most physi-
cal preparations to establish or improve basic muscle endurance. It is designed
to increase the average intensity of muscle effort that must be maintained over
a long period. It is most appropriate for athletes engaged in endurance sports
such as marathons, triathlons, cycling, cross country skiing, soccer, skating,
rowing, swimming, +400m running etc.
Resistance Program
The Contour Core Sculpting System Resistance program imposes an
average high power working level on muscle fibers, and targets a
combination of fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers. This program
is designed to increase muscle toning and basic strength in the lower
settings and muscle power and enhanced muscle strength in the higher
settings. This working level is maintained over a short period (12 minutes
per session). The Resistance program activates the anaerobic
metabolism of muscle fibers during the stimulation session and induces the
production of lactic acid. It is intended to increase the time the muscle is able
to maintain a high power working level (close to its maximum) or the average
power working level the muscle is able to maintain for a short duration. It is
designed for sporting activities, which are characterized by a need for
intense (close to maximum) efforts to be maintained or repeated over
a longer duration to approach the limit of muscle exhaustion. Sports
requiring this type of effort include the 400 and 800 meter running races,
Training
Programs

16
(Resistance Program continued)
cycling races and 100 meter swimming. It is appropriate for many other fitness
applications and sports based on duration, such as body building, mountain
biking, weight lifting, dance (modern & classical), and toning and shaping,
which make repeated demands on muscle resistance.
Strength Program
The Contour Core Sculpting System Strength program imposes a high
and instantaneous power working level on muscle fibers during tetanic
contractions. These contractions are separated by long periods of rest.
The result is an average medium power working level (+20 minutes).
This program is intended to increase the maximum strength of muscle
contraction, which is carried out isometrically or dynamically. It is
specifically designed for sports characterized by a need for maximum but very
brief strength contractions. Weight lifting is a typical sport of this kind. This
program is also appropriate for any type of sports requiring a gain in strength on
a specific muscle (cycling, short distance running, soccer, etc.).
ExplosiveStrengthProgram
The purpose of the Contour Core Sculpting System Explosive Strength
program is to increase the speed with which maximum muscle strength
can be supplied. It is designed to improve performance in sporting
activities of very brief duration such as jumps, sprints and trowing. To
ensure a progressive approach in the muscle stimulation training, you are
advised not to use this program without having previously worked through the
cycle of sessions using the Strength program.
Training
Programs

17
Special Programs
The Contour Core Sculpting System also offers two special muscle training
programs. Its objective is to prepare muscle for explosive or to facilitate
recovery after active muscle training and competition:
• Potentiation
• ActiveRecovery
Potentiation (Warm-up) Program
The Contour Core Sculpting System Potentiation (Warm-up) Program
produces the physiological muscle phenomenon know as “Twitch
potentiation”. A specific system of stimulation increases the amplitude
and the speed of the elementary muscle twitch response of muscle fibers,
most particularly of fast fibers. A potentiated muscle gains in velocity and
reaches its maximum strength more easily and rapidly.
Active Recovery Program
The Contour Core Sculpting System Active Recovery program
produces muscle twitches at a very low frequency. Those twitches act like a
massage and induce up to a 5 times local increase in blood flow to
the muscle, versus what the heart does naturally on its own. They are
responsibleforafasterreductionofthelacticacidbloodlevel(uptoa200%
greater reduction than mere rest) and they accelerate the exchanges between
muscle fibers and blood, working to speed the muscle repair process.
Consequently, the stimulated muscles recuperate better from exercise and
fatigue and the athlete has a feeling of relaxation and muscle lightness. This type
of recovery program is recommended after intense training sessions and
competitions. It is particularly useful after sports requiring long duration efforts,
combining endurance and resistance (cycling, marathon, triathlon, mountain-
bike, etc.). The same is applicable to sports that require shorter, very intense
efforts (basketball, soccer, football).
The Active Recovery program has specific exercise levels for blood flow,
endorphin release and muscle relaxation.
