T he C rom em eo ST X board is an intellig ent hard-disk eontroller, u sing the
ST-506 standard interface to support a w ide variety of 5-1/411W inehester drives.
A n S'rm -eontrolled drive can have u p to 16 head s and 1024 ey linders.
A s an intelligent disk controller, the ST IX needs little attention from the host# ting sb'stem . W ith its ow n Z 8OA m icroproeessor, 641( by tes of R A LI, andopera
direct aeeess to m ain m em oc (D M A ),the ST X allow s the host C PU to eontinue
exeeuting instruetions during disk read/F rite operations,relieving the disk I/O
Hbottlen eek 'î afflleting m any m ultb-user s'y stem s.
Sy stem perform anee is further enhaneed by the S'rlr ts fou r fu ll-track data* buffers. O n each disk read , an entire traek is read into one of the data buffers.
W hen subsequent seetor requests are on the sam e traek (as is likely), the data
is im m ediately available. If a11 the buffers are full w hen a new read request
appears, th e ST X either diseards or w rites back to disk the least-used of th e
four buffers (based on frequency of aceess and tim e sinz e last use).
@ In addition, the ST X ean divide a sing le disk drive into as m any as 32 logieal
units. T hu s, a sep arate l'drive l' ean be assig n ed to eaeh u ser, or the app arent
disk siz e can be m atc hed to a baek-u p m ed ium .
The ST X board is supported by the follow ing operating sy stem s: C rom ix-p lus,
@ 68000 C rom ix version 20.63 or hig her, and Z8 0 C rom ix version 11.27 or hig her.
T o run the ST IX &nd W D I-II board s coneurrently in th e sam e sy stem , the W D I-II
must be m e ified (refer to appendix C ).

The CRC just read from the disk is ineorrect; it is different than the

W D I-II m ust be m odified as dem ribed in this appendix. This procedure applies
to revisions C and D of the ST X , and revision D of the W D l-lI.
N ote : The follow ing m e ifieation sbould be done only by your loeal au th orized

1. P osition tlle W D I-II board w ith the solder sid e up and th e edg c connec tor
tow ard s you .
2. M lder together pins 32 and 33 of IC 42. R lder a s-ineh insulated juznper
to 1C 42 pill 33, and I'utl it through the feed-tinrough hole just above pin
33 (figure (..7-1).

'1. C ut tlte treces froiu pins 32 and 33 of 1C 42 (tk ure C -2).
5. A t th e feed-through hole to the right of IC 1 Pin 7, cut th e traee going to
1C 43 pin 13 (figure C-2).
6. M lder the s-ineh jum per from the solder side to the feed-through hole at
the right of IC 1 pin 7 (figure C -2)*
7. lnstall a 2-pin eonneetor (Cromemeo part num ber 017-0009)at J3,to the
1eft of IC 1 (figure C -2).
8. O n th e ST IX board , install a z-p in conn ector at J 3 if it is not already in
plaée (figure 1-2).
9. Install th e W D I-II and ST X board s, and eonnec t th e D M A priority eable
from the right-hand O U T pin of J 3 on the W D I-II to the right-hand IN pin
of .13 on the ST m (figures C-2 and 1-2).
This e om pletes the m Y ifieation. F ollow norm al eheckou t proe edures to verify
proper op eration.
