CTI JANUS CONTROLLER QUICK START GUIDE
Purpose of this Document
This document is designed to assist you in unpacking and initial installation of the CTI Janus Programmable
Automation Controller (PAC). It also describes options for setting the network parameters required for
basic operation.
For assistance with configuration and operation, we recommend that you download the Janus Controller
Installation and Operation Guide from the CTI web site: www.controltechnology.com/support/manuals/.
Introduction
The CTI Janus PAC is an advanced, high-performance IEC-61131-3 compliant PLC with unmatched
integrated communications capabilities and diagnostic features. The processor provides real-time control
functions, connectivity, data handling, and visualization in one product.
Unpacking the Module
Open the shipping carton and remove the special anti-static bag that contains the module. After
discharging any static build-up, remove the module from the static bag. Do not discard the static bag.
Always use this bag for protection against static damage when the module is not inserted into the I/O base.
CAUTION:
The components on the Janus Controller can be damaged by static electricity discharge.
To prevent this damage, the module is shipped in a special anti-static bag. Static control precautions
should be followed when removing the module from the bag and when handling the printed circuit
board during configuration
Setup
The Janus Controller is shipped with the battery and internal SD card installed. The firmware is pre-loaded
on the SD card and ready for operation.
By default, the Janus CPU will automatically obtain network settings (IP Address and Subnet mask) from a
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server if available. This allows easy access to the controller
web server for setting a fixed IP Address and configuration parameters. You must connect an Ethernet cable
from a network switch to any of the front panel ports (PORT A, PORT B,PORT C, or PORT D) to use this feature.
If a DHCP server is not available, the network settings can be set manually after startup as described below.

Installation
The Janus Controller must be installed into the first slot in the base (next to the power supply).
Remove power from the chassis. Align the circuit board with the connector next to the power supply. Slide
the controller into the rack until the connector seats. Use the thumbscrews to secure the controller to the
rack.
Apply power to the base power supply. The POWER GOOD LED on the power supply should illuminate,
indicating that power is being supplied to the base connectors.
Startup
The Janus Controller takes about 12-15 seconds to complete the startup sequence. During startup, you
should see a scrolling decimal point in the front panel alphanumeric display.
When startup is complete, the firmware version is briefly displayed and then one of the following:
•If network parameters were assigned by the DHCP server, the IP Address and subnet mask in CIDR
format is displayed.
•If not, “no IP E010 . . .” will scroll across the display and Error LED will blink indicating manual
network setup is required.
Module Status Indicators
When this is complete, the status indicators should be in the state as shown in the table below:
Indicator
State
Comments
CPU GOOD
ON
If the CPU GOOD LED is OFF, contact CTI Technical
Support.
RUN
OFF
This LED is set ON when the application program is
running in the CPU. It will always be OFF on initial
startup.
ERROR
OFF or
BLINK
This LED will blink if the network parameters could not
be obtained from the DHCP server. This indicates manual
network setup is required.
Setting the Network Parameters Manually
If network parameters were set by DHCP server (Error LED is off), this section can be skipped.
The SD Card Ethernet Port Setup provides an alternate method to specify a fixed IP Address for the
controller Primary Subnet configuration when a DCHP server is not accessible.
This operation requires the following steps:
a) Remove power to the base and remove CPU from the chassis.
b) Set Module Switch 4 to CLOSED position. Ensure Switch 2 is OPEN.
c) Re-install CPU in chassis.

d) Create a file named ‘cti.ini’ using your favorite text editor (Notepad works just fine).
See APPENDIX B in the Janus Controller Installation and Operation Guide for information on assigning
IP Address and Subnet parameters.
The following keywords and associated values must be inserted into this file. The values must be
valid network settings expressed in dotted decimal notation.
ip = x.x.x.x
subnetmask = x.x.x.0
gateway = x.x.x.x *
* This keyword and associated value is optional. If you don’t want to specify a default gateway
address, you should omit this entry.
Example:
ip = 198.18.74.56.
subnetmask = 255.255.255.0
gateway = 198.18.74.1
Each keyword/value combination must be entered on a separate line. If keywords are duplicated,
only the first entry is processed –the others are ignored.
e) Copy the ‘cti.ini’file created above to the root directory of a SD card and insert that card into the
front panel SD card slot.
f) Turn off power to the base, remove the controller from the base
Set Module Switch 4 to CLOSED position. Ensure Module Switch 2 is OPEN. The location of the
module switches is shown below.
g) Re-install the controller into the base, and restore power.
h) On power up, the controller enters Port Parameter Setup mode and displays PPSt on the front
panel display.
i) Next, the controller will attempt to find the ‘cti.ini’ configuration file in the root directory of the
front panel SD card. All required data must be included and valid.
j) If any errors are detected, PPEr is displayed for 5 seconds indicating a Port Parameterization Error
and the appropriate error (see below) is generated.
•If a properly formatted SD card is not inserted into the front panel receptacle:
Error 370 (Front Panel SD Card Not Accessible) is reported.
•If the cti.ini file cannot be found in the SD card root folder:
Error 250 (Front Panel SD Card –Update File Not Found) is reported.
•If the cti.ini file does not contain the required keywords/values:
Error 260 (Front Panel SD Card - Invalid Update File) is reported.

k) If one of these errors exists, the firmware will repeatedly attempt to perform this operation as long
as the controller remains in this mode. This allows you to insert (or modify and insert) an SD card
without having to reset the controller. Each time you insert the SD card, the operations in steps (e-
f) are repeated.
l) If the operation successfully completes, the parameterization data is saved.
PPdn indicating Port Parameterization Done is displayed on the front panel.
m) To return to normal operation, turn off power to the base, remove the controller from the base, set
Module Switch 4 to the OPEN position, re-install the module into the base, and restore power.
n) On power up, the firmware performs subnet validation on the saved values. If valid, those values
are written into system parameter data and network parameters (IP Address and Subnet mask) is
displayed.
Janus Controller Configuration via Web Server
At this point, the Janus Controller should have valid network parameters that allow it to be configured via
the embedded web server. The web server can be accessed by typing the IP address of the controller into
the URL box of your browser and pressing the ENTER key.
If the network settings were obtained from DHCP server, you should assign a fixed IP Address.
See Chapter 4 in the Janus Controller Installation and Operation Guide for information on controller
configuration.
Development Software
Janus Workbench Software (Order# 2500P-WB-USB) is required for application development and
configuration of communications in the Janus Controllers. Contact CTI for more information. Contact
information is listed at the bottom of this document.
Firmware Update
Prior to using the Janus Controller, you should verify that the controller firmware is current. The firmware
version number displayed in the Product Information page of the embedded web server.
The current firmware version is available on the CTI web site at the following link:
http://www.controltechnology.com/support/software-revision/ .
See Chapter 6 in the Janus Controller Installation and Operation Guide for information on updating
firmware.
