Introduction
TheD-LinkAirPlusXtremeG+DI-624+High-Speed Wireless Routerisan 802.11g high-
performance,wireless routerthatsupportshigh-speed wireless networking athome,at
workorinpublicplaces.
Unlikemostrouters,the DI-624+providesdatatransfersatup to8X(compared tothe
standard11Mbps)whenusedwithotherD-LinkAirPlusXtremeGproducts.The802.11g
standardisbackwardscompatiblewith802.11b products.Thismeansthatyou do not
need tochange yourentirenetworktomaintainconnectivity.You maysacrificesomeof
802.11g’s speed when you mix802.11b and 802.11g devices,butyou will notlosethe
abilitytocommunicatewhen you incorporatethe 802.11g standardintoyour802.11b
network.You maychoosetoslowlychange yournetworkbygraduallyreplacing the 802.
11b deviceswith802.11g devices.
Inadditiontooffering fasterdatatransferspeedswhen used withother802.11gproducts,
theDI-624+hasthe newest, strongest, mostadvanced securityfeaturesavailabletoday.
When used withother802.11g WPA (WiFiProtected Access)and 802.1xcompatible
productsinanetworkwithaRADIUSserver,the securityfeaturesinclude:
WPA*AvailablearoundQ4/2003asafreedownload.:Wi-FiProtectedAccessauthorizes
and identifiesusersbased on asecretkeythatchangesautomaticallyata
regularinterval.WPAusesTKIP(TemporalKey IntegrityProtocol)tochange
thetemporalkeyevery10,000packets(apacketisakindofmessagetransmitted
overanetwork.)Thisinsuresmuchgreatersecuritythan the standardWEP
security.(Bycontrast, the olderWEPencryption required the keys tobe changed
manually.)
802.1x*Availablearound Q4/2003 asafree download.:Authentication isafirstline of
defenseagainstintrusion.IntheAuthentication process the serververifiesthe
identityofthe clientattempting toconnecttothe network.Unfamiliarclients
wouldbe denied access.
Forhomeusersthatwill notincorporateaRADIUSserverintheirnetwork,the security
forthe DI-624+,used inconjunction withother802.11g products,will still be much
strongerthan everbefore.Utilizing the PreSharedKey modeofWPA,theDI-624+will
obtainanewsecuritykeyeverytimeitconnectstothe 802.11g network.You onlyneed
toinputyourencryption information onceinthe configuration menu.Nolongerwill you
havetomanuallyinputanewWEP keyfrequentlytoensuresecurity,withtheDI-624+,
you will automaticallyreceiveanewkeyeverytimeyou connect, vastlyincreasing the
safetyofyourcommunications.

Standards-BasedTechnology
The DI-624+Wireless Broadband Routerutilizesthe new802.11gstandard.
The IEEE 802.11gstandardisan extension ofthe 802.11b standard.It increasesthe
datarateup to54 Mbpswithinthe 2.4GHzband,utilizing OFDMtechnology.
Thismeansthatinmostenvironments,withinthe specified range ofthisdevice,you will
be abletotransferlarge filesquicklyoreven watchamovieinMPEGformatoveryour
networkwithoutnoticeabledelays.Thistechnologyworks bytransmitting high-speed
digitaldataoveraradiowaveutilizingOFDM(OrthogonalFrequencyDivisionMultiplexing)
technology.OFDMworks bysplitting the radiosignalintomultiplesmallersub-signals
thatarethen transmitted simultaneouslyatdifferentfrequenciestothe receiver.OFDM
reducesthe amountofcrosstalk(interference)insignaltransmissions.
TheDI-624+isbackwardscompatiblewith802.11b devices.Thismeansthatifyou have
an existing 802.11b network,the devicesinthatnetworkwill be compatiblewith802.11g
devicesatspeedsofup to11Mbpsinthe 2.4GHzrange.

Installation Considerations
The D-LinkAirPlusXtremeG+DI-624+letsyou access yournetwork,using awireless
connection,fromvirtuallyanywherewithinitsoperating range.Keep inmind,however,
thatthe number,thickness and location ofwalls,ceilings,orotherobjectsthatthe
wireless signalsmustpass through,maylimitthe range.Typicalrangesvarydepending
on the typesofmaterialsand background RF(radiofrequency)noiseinyourhomeor
business.The keytomaximizing wireless range istofollowthesebasicguidelines:
Keep thenumberofwallsandceilingsbetweentheDI-624+and othernetwork
devicestoaminimum-eachwall orceiling can reduceyourD-Linkwireless
product’s range from3-90 feet(1-30 meters.)Position yourdevicessothat
the numberofwallsorceilingsisminimized.
Beawareofthe directline between networkdevices.Awall thatis1.5feet
thick (.5meters),ata45-degree angleappearstobe almost3feet(1meter)
thick.Ata2-degree angleitlooks over42 feet(14 meters)thick!Position
devicessothatthe signalwill travelstraightthrough awall orceiling (instead
ofatan angle)forbetterreception.
Keep yourproductaway(atleast3-6feetor1-2meters)fromelectrical
devicesorappliancesthatgenerateextremeRFnoise.
Building Materialscan impede the wireless signal-asolidmetaldooror
aluminumstudsmayhaveanegativeeffectonrange.Trytoposition wireless
devicesand computerswithwireless adapterssothatthe signalpasses
through drywall oropen doorways and notothermaterials.

TheDI-624+can be configured asavirtualserversothatremoteusersaccessing Web
orFTPservicesviathe publicIPaddress can be automaticallyredirected tolocal
serversinthe LAN(LocalAreaNetwork).
TheDI-624+firewall featurefiltersoutunrecognized packetstoprotectyourLAN
networksoall computersnetworked withtheDI-624+areinvisibletothe outside
world.If you wish,you can makesomeofthe LANcomputersaccessiblefromthe
Internetbyenabling VirtualServer.Depending on the requested service,theDI-624+
redirectsthe externalservicerequesttothe appropriateserverwithinthe LANnetwork.
TheDI-624+isalsocapableofport-redirection meaning incoming traffictoaparticular
portmaybe redirected toadifferentporton the servercomputer.
Eachvirtualservicethatiscreated will be listed atthe bottomofthe screen inthe
VirtualServersList. Therearepre-defined virtualservicesalreadyinthe table.You
mayusethembyenabling themand assigning the serverIPtousethatparticular
virtualservice.
