spinningwheeltodate!Itwasdesignedtobequiet,long-lived,and
torequireliletonomaintenanceduringitslifeme.Shouldyou

QRcodebelow.Whensengupyourwheelaerassemblingfrom
at-packyou’llwanttomakesurethateverythingisproperlyaligned
foropmalspinning.(This
isalsoawiseprocedure
aertravelingwithyour
Daedaluswheel.)
The motor mount is
designed to be easily
removedandreinstalled
facingtheopposite
direcon,inorderto
change tensioning systems
fromScotchtoIrish.In
Scotch tension the motor
drivestheyerandthetensionbeltprovidesresistancetothebobbin,
allowingyarntowindon.InIrishtension,it’stheopposite:thebobbin
isledbythemotor.Becauseofthisfeature,youwillneedtomake
surethemotoranditspinionpulleyareproperlyaligneddirectly
underneaththeappropriatewhorlbeforespinning.
Getting Started

Todoso,checkthepinionpulley(thegroovethatholdsyourdrive
band)onthefrontofthemotor.Itshouldbelocateddirectlybelow
thebeltgrooveontheyerabove.Verifythatthedrivebeltisparallel
tothefrontframebyobservingitfromtheside.Useyourthumbs
toadjusttheposionofthemotormountasnecessary.Ifthemotor
mountfeelstooghttomove,pushonesidedownwardunlitpops
othecarbontube.
Ifnecessary,thiswheelcanbeat-packedtoaidinportability.To
disassemble,you’llneedtousethe3mmAllenwrenchincluded
inyoursparestoolkit.Simplyremovetheyer,popothemotor
mount,andloosen4screwstoseparatethefrontandrearpiecesfrom
thebodytubes.

Theblackpinionpulleyonthefrontofthemotorhastwogrooves:the
smalleroneisLowSpeedandshouldbeusedprimarily.Ifyouincrease
thespeedto100%inLowSpeedandsllneedmore,switchthemotor
belttothelargerHighSpeedpulleyandenjoyasignicantincreasein
speed!Whenchangingthemotorbeltfromonepulleytotheother,
youwillneedtomovethemotormountassemblyslightly,tore-align
itunderthegroove.Youcanviewfromthesideanddetermineifthe
beltisparalleltothefrontframe.

OurwheelsshipoutinScotchtensionsetup.Themotorwillbefacing
forwardandthepinionpulleywillhavejustenoughspacebetween
itandthefrontframetoslipontherubberdrivebelt.Viewingfrom
thesidewillverifythatthedrivebeltisparalleltotheadjacentfront
frame.
Thetensionbeltislocatedinyourspareskit.(It’sashortpieceof
Kevlarwithaspringandanadjustablecinchplate.)Installyouryer,
bobbin,motordrivebelt,andtensionbelt.Placethetensionbeltso
thatthespringisontheLEFTsidewhenspinningsingles(clockwise,
Z)butswapthetensionbeltwithspringontheRIGHTsideforplying
(counterclockwise,S).Thiswaythespringcanactuallydoitsjob
onthe“taut”sideofthetensionbelt.ThegoalistohavetheRight
TensionDial(1)adjustedintothemiddleofitsadjustmentrange,with
noslackinthetensionbeltandverylileexpansionofthespring.This
isagoodstarngpointandmakessurethereisausablerangeonthe
dialsotakeupcanbeincreasedordecreased.

Toreducetheslackonthe
tensionbelt,simplyrotatethe
LeTensionHookoutward(2)
unltheslackisgone,thenuse
theknobontherighttone-tune
fromthere.
Aertraveling,asmalladjustment
mayberequired.Starlingtension
usesaspring,andyoucanlook
at it to see how much tension is
beingapplied.Theusablerange
goesfromspringcollapsedto
fullyextendedatalmostdouble
itslength.Ifyousllneedmore
takeup,considerusingIrish
tensioninstead.

Irishtensionprovidesmoretakeup,
orpullinginoftheyarn,than
Scotchtension.ChangingtoIrish
tensionisaseasyasremovingthe
yer,tensionbelt,andmotordrive
belt.
First, detach the motor and its
mountbypushingdownonone
edgewithboththumbs.Theother
sidenowcomesfreeeasily.
Turnthemotorsothatitnowfaces
therear,andsnapitbackonto
thecarbontubes.Placethemotor
drivebeltovertherearframeand
re-installtheyer.
Installthemotordrivebeltover
thebobbin’ssmallwhorl.Verify
thealignmentoftheclearmotor
drivebelttotherearframe.If
needed gently slide the motor
unlitalignsdirectlyunderneath
thesmallwhorlofthebobbin.
Installthetensionbeltatthefront,
overtheyergroove.Pleasenote
thatyourdireconswitchwill
beoppositeinIrishtensionas
comparedtoScotch(meaningthat
IisSandIIisnowZ).

Slide the motor mount in a
rockingmoonunlitaligns
under the small bobbin whorl at
therearofthebobbinandthe
otherendofthechassis.Verify
thisvisuallyfromthesideto
ensurethedrivebeltisparallel
withtherearframe.
Whenmovingthetensionhook
piecesfromoneendtothe
other,youroveralltensionmay
beaected.Fine-tunethemin
theirnewplacement.

Beforeyougetstarted,alwaysmakesurethedireconswitchonthe
SpeedControllerisinthemiddle(neutral)posion,orelsethewheel
willaempttostartwhenyou’renotready.Pleasereadthedirecons
forusingtheSpeedControllerformorein-depthinformaon.

• Tiealeader(alongloopofngeringweightyarnoryour
personalpreference)ontothebobbin,usuallyjustthroughthe
paernononeendofthebobbinwhorls.Usetheprovided
oricehooktoroutetheleaderthroughtheyarnguide,
thenthroughtheshoulderoftheyer,andthenthroughthe
orice.
• Plugyour15V5ampwallpowersupply(oryour15Vbaery)
intotheSpeedController.

• Themoduleshouldlightupandshowthecurrentsetspeed.
AdjustthisasnecessaryusingtheUp/Downarrows,andthen
presstheDaedaluslogo(Start/Stop)ontheSpeedController.
Thedisplaywillshow“---“,whichisstopped.
• Aachyourbertotheleaderloop.Verifythedisplaysays
“---“,whichmeansitisstopped.Flipthedireconswitchto
thedesireddirecon.
• Whenready,presstheDaedaluslogo(Start/Stop).The
wheelwillslowlyacceleratefor3secondstoyoursetspeed
%.Youcanne-tuneyourspeedwhilespinningbyusing
theUp/Downarrows.Whenit’smetoadvanceyouryarn
guide,pressthelogo(Start/Stop)andthewheelwillslowly
deceleratefor3secondsandcometoastop.
• IncreaseordecreaseyourspeedusingtheUpandDown
arrows.Payaenontothetakeupandadjustthe
tensionknobaccordingly.Fine-tuneyourspeedasyouget
comfortable.Youwillneedtoslightlyadjustthetensionasyou
changeyourspeedandasthebobbinllswithyarn.

Whenit’smetochangeyourbobbin,simplyslipothetensionbelt,
litherearendoftheyerandrotatetheassemblytoeitherside.
Themaidenpivotsfreely,sothedrivebeltalmostneverneedstobe
removed.Keeptrackofthesmallrearbearingbyplacingitbackonto
therearmagnetsunlyoucangetthenewbobbininstalled.Withthe
newbobbinontheyersha,replacetherearbearingandrotatethe
assemblybackontothechassis,makingsurethesmallrearbearing
goesbackontothemagnets.Replacethetensionbeltandyouare
readytospinagain!
WhensetupforIrishtension,yourdrivebeltisonthebobbin,so
simplyslipthatobeforeremovingthebobbin.

ThefollowingRPM(rotaonperminute)statswererecordedfrom
atypicalStarlingV3FPaerashortbreak-inperiod.Topspeedwill
increasearound3-4%fromthesenumbersaerapproximately100-
200hoursofuse.Actualperformanceguresvarybetweenwheels
bylessthan1.5%(30RPMattopspeed),duetoslightvariaonsin
componentsandbuild.Pleaseusethisasageneralguideline.
Whenusingabaerytopoweryourwheel,youmayndthatyour
baerymesout(shutsitselfo)atslowerspeeds.Thisisduetothe
wheelnotbeingabletodrawenoughpowerfromit.Ifyoundthis
tobethecase,tryplugginginanotheritemwhileinuse,viatheUSB
port.WerecommendaUSBlight(availableonourwebsite),asmall
fan,orsimplychargeyourcellphonewhileyou’respinning.

PresstheStart/Stopbuontosavechangesandexitthemenuatany
me.Herearethevemenuselecons:
1)030 Startmedelay,intenthsofasecond.Thisshowsa3-second
delay,thoughthefullrangeis0-10seconds.(Keepthestart
delaylowtogetthewheeluptospeedquickly,orincrease
itforaslowerstart.Ifyoufeeltheyarnisbeingyankedfrom
yourhandwhenthewheelstarts,increasethisvalue.)
2)030 Stopmedelay,intenthsofasecond.Thisshowsa3-second
delay.Again,theactualrangeis0-10seconds.Asengof
2.060wouldbealonger,6-seconddelay.(5-7secondsseems
rightforhigh-speedplyingonaladenbobbin,thoughyour
mileagemayvary.)Ifyou’regengbacklashing,wherethe
yarnfeedsbackothebobbinduringaStop,increasethis
valuejustunlthebacklashingstops.

3)001 Minimumspeedseng,asapercentageofRPM.Thisshows
asengof1%,thelowestspeedseleconpossiblewhile
spinning.Thissengisnotcommonlychangedfrom1%.
(Ifyouneverusespeedsunder30%,youcouldchangethis
seng3.030andyourSpeedControllerwon’tgoslowerthan
30%)
4)100 MaximumspeedsengasapercentageofRPM.This
showsasengof100%,meaningthatyoucouldgofull
throleandspinatmaxspeed,providedyoufeelcomfortable
doingso.Thissengrepresentsthemaximumspeedyou’d
likeyourSpeedControllertoallowfor.Anewusermaywant
tomakesuretheyneveraccidentallygotoofastandmight
limittheirtopspeedthisway.(Forinstance,changingthis
sengto4.070wouldkeepthecontrollerfromgoingabove
70%speed.)
5)001 Speedincrementadjustmentsize.Thisshows1%increments,
meaningthateverymeyoupressUp/Down,thespeedwill
changeinstepsof1%,2%,5%,etc.,dependingontheseng
you’veselected.Asengof5.005meanseverypressofthe
Up/Downbuonswillincreaseordecreaseyourspeedbythe
inial5%(e.g.,5,10,15,20%insteadof1,2,3,4%).Itwould
beveryuncommontochangethissengfromthedefault
valueof1%increments.
