ThankyouforpurchasingthemostpowerfulandexibleDaedalus
electricspinningwheeltodate!Itwasdesignedtobequiet,long-
lived,andtorequireliletonomaintenanceduringitslifeme.
Shouldyouneedanyassistancewithyourwheel,pleasedonot

Towatchavideoonhowtoassembleyourwheel,pleasescanthe
QRcodebelow.Whensengupyourwheelaerassemblingfrom
at-pack,you’llwanttomakesurethateverythingisproperlyaligned
foropmalspinning.(This
isalsoawiseprocedure
aertravelingwithyour
Daedaluswheel.)
Themotormountis
designedtobeeasily
removedandreinstalled
facingtheopposite
direcon,inorderto
changetensioningsystems
fromScotchtoIrish.In
Scotchtension,themotors
drivetheyerandthetensionbeltprovidesresistancetothebobbin,
allowingyarntowindon.InIrishtension,it’stheopposite:thebobbin
isledbythemotors.Becauseofthisfeature,youwillneedtomake
surethemotorsandthepinionpulleysareproperlyaligned,directly
underneaththeappropriatewhorlbeforespinning.
Getting Started

WhenusingyourMagpieinScotchtension,themotorwillbefacing
forwardandthepinionpulley(s)willhavejustenoughspacebetween
itandthefrontframetosliptherubberdrivebeltinfrontofit.
Viewingfromthesidewillverifythatthedrivebeltisparalleltothe
adjacentfrontframe.
Nowlet’sgetourtensionadjusted.Thegoalistoadjustthetension
knob/stalk(1)tothemiddleofitsadjustmentrangepriortobeginning
aspin.Ifneeded,takeslackinoroutatthecinchplate(2)unlthe
tensionbelthasnonebutthespringissllcollapsed.Thisway,there

Todoso,checkthepinionpulleys(thegroovesthatholdyourdrive
band)onthefrontofthemotors.Theyshouldbelocateddirectly
belowthebeltgrooveontheyerabove.Verifythatthedrivebelt
isparalleltothefrontframebyobservingitfromtheside.Useyour
thumbstoadjusttheposionofthemotormountasnecessary.Ifthe
motormountfeelstooghttomove,pushonesidedownwardunlit
popsothecarbontube.
Ifnecessary,thiswheelcanbeat-packedtoaidinportability.To
disassemble,you’llneedtousethe3mmAllenwrenchincluded
inyoursparestoolkit.Simplyremovetheyer,popothemotor
mount,andloosen4screwstoseparatethefrontandrearpiecesfrom
thebodytubes.

Aertraveling,anothersmall
adjustmentmayneedtobemade
atthecinch.TheStandardHead
usesaspring.Youcanlookatit
toseehowmuchtensionisbeing
applied.Theusablerangegoes
fromspringcollapsedtoextended
atalmostdoubleitslength.Ifyou
sllneedmoretakeup,consider
usingyoure-spinnerinIrish
tension.

Irishtensionprovidesmoretakeup,
orpullinginoftheyarn,than
Scotchtension.ChangingtoIrish
tensionisaseasyasremovingthe
yer,tensionbelt,andmotordrive
belt.
First,detachthemotorandits
mountbypushingdownonone
edgewithboththumbs.Theother
sidenowcomesfreeeasily.
Turnthemotorsothatitnowfaces
therear,andsnapitbackonto
thecarbontubes.Placethemotor
drivebeltovertherearframeand
re-installtheyer.
Installthemotordrivebeltover
thebobbin’ssmallwhorl.Verify
thealignmentoftheclearmotor
drivebelt(itbeingparalleltothe
rearframe)orgentlyslidethe
motorunlitalignsdirectlyunder
thesmallwhorlofthebobbin.
Installthetensionbeltatthefront,
overtheyergroove.Pleasenote
thatyourdireconswitchwill
beoppositeinIrishtensionas
comparedtoScotch(meaningthat
IisnowSandIIisnowZ).

Youwillneedtoslidethemotormount
inarockingmoonunlitalignsunder
thelarge(lowspeed)orsmall(high
speed)whorlattherearofthebobbin
andtheotherendofthechassis.Verify
thisvisuallyfromthesidetoensure
thedrivebeltisparallelwiththerear
frame.Addionally,whenusingthe
largewhorl,swingtheyerbyhand
andobservethatthereisasmallbitof
clearance(justafewmm)betweenthe
yerarmpsandthedrivebeltasthe
yerrotates.
InIrishtension,yourdrivebandgoes
onthebobbinanditsbuilt-inwhorls,
whichallowsyoutohavetwodierent
speedmodes:aHighSpeed(small
drum)andaLowSpeed(largedrum).Eachyerhastwodierent
drivebands.Thelargerdrivebandgoesoverthelargebobbindrum
andthesmallonegoesovertheyer,orthesmallbobbindrum.

Beforeyougetstarted,alwaysmakesurethedireconswitchonthe
SpeedControllerisinthemiddle(neutral)posion,orelsethewheel
willaempttostartwhenyou’renotready.Pleasereadthedirecons
forusingtheSpeedControllerformorein-depthinformaon.

I - ClockwiseZtwist(commonlychosenforspinningsingles)
0- Neutral
II- CounterclockwiseStwist(commonlyusedforplying)
(Note:thisisforScotchtension;Irishtensionisthereverse)
• Tiealeader(alongloopofngeringweightyarnoryour
personalpreference)ontothebobbin.Usetheprovided
oricehooktoroutetheleaderthroughtheyarnguide,
thenthroughtheshoulderoftheyer,andthenthroughthe
orice.
• Plugyour15V5ampwallpowersupply(oryour15Vbaery)
intotheSpeedController.
• Themoduleshouldlightupandshowthecurrentsetspeed.
AdjustthisasnecessaryusingtheUp/Downarrows,andthen
presstheStart/StopontheSpeedController.Thedisplaywill
show“---“,whichisstopped.
• Aachyourbertotheleaderloop.Verifythedisplaysllsays
“---“,whichmeansitisstopped.Flipthedireconswitchto
thedesireddirecon(IisZtwist,IIisStwistinScotchtension
andreversedinIrishtension).
• Whenready,pressStart/Stop.Thewheelwillslowlyaccelerate
for3secondstoyoursetspeed%.Youcanne-tuneyour
speedwhilespinningbyusingtheUp/Downarrows.Whenit’s
metoadvanceyouryarnguide,pressthefrontoftheStart/
Stopandthewheelwillslowlydeceleratefor3secondsand
cometoafullstop.
• IncreaseordecreaseyourspeedusingtheUpandDown
arrows.Payaenontothetakeupandadjustthe
tensionknobaccordingly.Fine-tuneyourspeedasyouget
comfortable.Youwillneedtoslightlyadjustthetensionasyou
changeyourspeedandasthebobbinllswithyarn.

Whenit’smetochangeyourbobbin,slipothedrivebeltandlay
itovertheframe.Thenremovethetensionbelt.Thewaythetension
beltisremovedvariesabitdependingonwhichyeryouareusing
andwhichtensionmethodyouareusing(ScotchorIrish).
Changing the Bobbin

Scotch
Slipothetensionanddrivebelts,
thenliouttheyerandbobbin
assembly.Removetherearaxle
bearing.Keeptrackofitbyplacingit
backontotherearmagnets.Withthe
newbobbinontheyersha,replace
therearbearingontotheendofthe
axleandplacetheassemblybackonto
thechassis,makingsurethesmallrear
bearingclicksbackontothemagnets.
Replacethetensionanddrivebelts,
andyouarereadytospinagain!
Irish
Heretensionisontheyer,sothe
tensionbandcan’tberolledoand
willinsteadneedtobeunaached
fromoneside.Thespringinthe
StandardFlyertensionsystemmakes
foreasytensionbandremovalfrom
thisside.SincetheArtFlyerdoesn’t
useaspring,youwillneedtoloosen
thetensionandthensliptheenre
knob/stalkassemblyoutofitstrack.
Oncethedriveandtensionbelts
areoutoftheway,liouttheyer
andbobbinassembly.Removethe
rearaxlebearingandkeeptrackof
itbyplacingitbackontotherear
magnets.Withthenewbobbinonthe
yersha,replacetherearbearing
ontotheendoftheaxleandplace
theassemblybackontothechassis,
makingsurethesmallrearbearing
clicksbackontothemagnets.Replace
thetensionanddrivebelts,andyou
arereadytospinagain!

TheSpeedControllercanbeusedtothesideoftheMagpieoreven
usedasafootpedal.(Wehaveincludedasmallplascpedal
extensionforthispurpose.)ToremovetheModule/SpeedController,
gentlypushitoutfromthebackoftheMagpie’sface.Keepaneyeon
thecordthataachesthemotortothebackoftheSpeedController.
TocompletelyfreetheSpeedControllerfromthewheel,you’llneed
todisconnecttheMotorCable.Oncedisconnected,youcanfreeup
theMotorCablesoitcanreachtheSpeedController.TheMagpie
comeswithanExtensionCablethatwillallowyoutousetheSpeed
Controllerontheoororeventothesideofthetableorsurface
whereyouarespinning.Whenusingthecontrollerasafootpedal,
you’llneedtousetheFootPedalaachment,alsoincludedinthe
package.Thisaachmentinsertsintothesmallholeabovethe
Start/StopbuonandoverlaystheStart/Stopbuonasanextension.

ToaccesstheSpeedControllermenu,putthedireconswitchinthe
neutral(middle)posion.PresstheStart/Stopbuonandmakesure
itshowsaspeedpercentagenumber.PressMenutoseeoponNo.1,
andpressMenuagaintoreachthenextopon.Therearevetotal
opons.AdjusteachmenuoponbyusingtheUp/Downarrows.
PresstheStart/Stopbuontosavechangesandexitthemenuatany
me.Herearethevemenuselecons:
1)030 Startmedelay,intenthsofasecond.Thisshowsa3-second
delay,thoughthefullrangeis0-10seconds.(Keepthestart
delaylowtogetthewheeluptospeedquickly,orincrease
itforaslowerstart.Ifyoufeeltheyarnisbeingyankedfrom
yourhandwhenthewheelstarts,increasethisvalue.)
2)030 Stopmedelay,intenthsofasecond.Thisshowsa3-second
delay.Again,theactualrangeis0-10seconds.Asengof
2.060wouldbealonger,6-seconddelay.(5-7secondsseems
rightforhigh-speedplyingonaladenbobbin,thoughyour
mileagemayvary.)Ifyou’regengbacklashing,wherethe
yarnfeedsbackothebobbinduringastop,increasethis
valuejustunlthebacklashingstops.

3)001 Minimumspeedseng,asapercentageofRPM.Thisshows
asengof1%,thelowestspeedseleconpossiblewhile
spinning.Thissengisnotcommonlychangedfrom1%.
(Ifyouneverusespeedsunder30%,youcouldchangethis
seng3.030andyourSpeedControllerwon’tgoslowerthan
30%)
4)100 MaximumspeedsengasapercentageofRPM.This
showsasengof100%,meaningthatyoucouldgofull
throleandspinatmaxspeed,providedyoufeelcomfortable
doingso.Thissengrepresentsthemaximumspeedyou’d
likeyourSpeedControllertoallowfor.Anewusermaywant
tomakesuretheyneveraccidentallygotoofastandmight
limittheirtopspeedthisway.(Forinstance,changingthis
sengto4.070wouldkeepthecontrollerfromgoingabove
70%speed.)
5)001 Speedincrementadjustmentsize.Thisshows1%increments,
meaningthateverymeyoupressUp/Down,thespeedwill
changeinstepsof1%,2%,5%,etc.,dependingontheseng
you’veselected.Asengof5.005meanseverypressofthe
Up/Downbuonswillincreaseordecreaseyourspeedbythe
inial5%(e.g.,5,10,15,20%insteadof1,2,3,4%).Itwould
beveryuncommontochangethissengfromthedefault
valueof1%increments.

aplyingproject,texturedyarns,or
awlesssingles,youmaywanttouse
thisopon.WithIrishtension,your
drivebandgoesonthebobbin,which
allowsfortwospeedmodes:aHigh
Speed(usingthesmalldrum)anda
LowSpeed(thelargedrum).While
mostpeoplewillonlyuseHighSpeed,
theLowSpeedprovidesmuchmore
torqueforheavywork.Thisisuseful
inhightake-upprojectsorheavy
plying.
