The Spy d er2 is a small, fast, and cost-effectivecameraboastingafull featureset and a
CameraLink interface.Availablein512 to 2k resolutions, Spyder2 issmall,light,and uses

high-speed serial standard.Thecameraissensitive,but still providesquiet,uniform
output thankstoCDS(correlated doublesampling) and embedded flat-field correction

available standard lens options(C-mount,F-mount, and M42x1 photography standards).

1. ECD= Exposure control disabled. When operating the camera in exposure mode 2

2.1InstallationOverview
In order toset up your camera,you should takethesesteps:
1. Connect Camera Link™ cables from camera to frame grabber.
2. Connect power.
You must alsoset up theother componentsof your system,includinglight sources,frame
grabbers, camera mounts, heat sinks, host computers, optics, encoders, and so on.
2.2Input/OutputConnectorsandLED
The camera uses a:
• DiagnosticLED for monitoringthecamera.SeeLED StatusIndicator section below
for details.
• High-density 26-pin MDR26 connector for Camera Link control signals, data signals,
and serial communications.Refer toFigure 4: MDR26 Connector for pin descriptions.
• 6-pin Hirose connector for power. Refer to page 13 for pin descriptions.

Thecameraacceptscontrol inputsthrough theCameraLink MDR26Fconnector. All inputs
are optional. The camera ships in exposure mode 2 (programmable line rate and exposure
time). All Camera Control (CCx) signals are in a logic HIGH state. Line rate can be set
internally usingtheserial interface.Power-on rate is always 9600 baud. Data rate is
always 40 MHz.Theexternal control signals,EXSYNCand PRIN,areoptional and
enabled through theserial interface.

Note: EXSYNCshould not beclocked faster than thecamera’sspecified maximum line

out.

The camera requires a single voltage input (+12 V to +15 V). The camera meets all
performancespecificationsusingstandard switching power supplies,although well-
regulated linear supplies provide optimum performance. See the Performance
Specificationsfor current requirements.
When setting up the camera’s power supplies follow these guidelines:
•Protect thecamerawith afast-blow fuse between power supply and camera.
•Donot usetheshield on amulti-conductor cablefor ground.
•Keep leads as short as possible to reduce voltage drop.
Note: Performancespecificationsarenot guaranteed if your power supply doesnot meet
these requirements

3.1Overview
All camera features can be controlled through the serial interface. The camera can also be
used without theserial interfaceafter it hasbeen set up correctly.Functionsavailable
include:

For quick help, the camera can return all available commands and parameters through the
serial interface. To generate this list, send the command htothe camera.

3.2CommandFormat
The serial interface uses a simple ASCII-based protocol.
•A carriage return (CR) ends each command.
•Values in square brackets are optional.
•Therearetwo methodsfor entering thecommands: In long form each command is
written in itsentirety.In short form,only apredefined abbreviation isrequired.The
manual usestheshort form.
•Thecamerawill answer each command witheither "OK >"or "Error x:Error Message
>". The ">" is always the last character sent by the camera.
•The following parameters are used in the manual:
i= integer
f= float
s= string
t= tap
x1, x2 = pixel start and stop values
3.3ProcessingChain
Thefollowingfigureisasimplified block diagram of thecamera'sprocessing chain. The
analog processing chain containstwo elements–a gain stage and an offset stage. The
digital processing chain containstheFPN correction, PRNU correction,background
subtract,and asystem gain stage.Thesoftwarecommandsallow you to set and change all
theelementsof theprocessing chain.Thisenablesmaximum processingflexibility
depending on your requirements.

In addition,thetwo elementsof theanalog processing chain, analog gain and analog
offset,can beadjusted toseparatevaluesin thecalibrated and uncalibrated modes.For
example, the analog gain value can be set to –5db in calibrated modeand 6dBin
uncalibrated mode.When switchingbetween calibrated and uncalibrated modes,the
cameraautomatically usesthecorrespondingvalue.

3.4Startup
When thecameraisfirst started,it must perform several actionsbeforeit isready for
imaging.Thisstartup routine takes approximately 15 seconds, and follows this sequence:
1. Initializes the camera and all internal hardware.
2. Loadsthelast settingssaved tonon-volatilememory,includingthelast set of video
correction coefficients,if previously saved.
3. Restores user settingsif previously saved,otherwisefactory settings.
4. Performsamemory test and voltagetest and reportsan error if any occurred.
After thisstartup sequenceiscomplete,thecamerawill return either theprompt "OK>"if
noerror occurred,or anerror code if a problem has been discovered.
3.5SavingandRestoringSettings
Thecameraprovidesanumber of commandsfor restoring,storing,and savingsettings.
•Torestoretheoriginal factory settings,usethecommand rfs. The FPN and PRNU
coefficients are reset to 0.
•Tosaveall current settingstoEEROM,usethecommand wus.Thecamerawill
automatically restorethesaved user settingswhen powered up.
•Tosaveall current pixel coefficientsto EEROM,usethecommand wpc.
•Torestorethelast saved user settingsand theFPN and PRNU coefficients,usethe
command rus.
