Device Server Dimensions Application:
EthernetcommunicationsforanAKC55systemare
achievedbyinstallingandconfiguringanEthernetdevice
server,whichisakindofspecializedmodem.For this
purpose,use the Danfoss COMM-ELkit.
Mounting:
Usingthehook-and-loopfastenerprovided,mountthe
LantronixUDS-10deviceserveronarigidflatsurface
within41/2 feet of theAKC 55controller.Alternatively,
usethescrew-mountingtabs,withappropriatescrews.
Thedeviceserver can bemounted inside arack panel,
awayfromhighvoltagewiring.

TheDanfoss COMM-EL kitcontains:
1. One Lantronxi UDS-10deviceserver.
2. OneAKC55-MPM piggybackpower supply
board.
3. One 95-05RS232 wiringharness (AKC 55to
modem).
4. One 2-conductor power cord for the UDS-10
deviceserverwithawhiteMolex-typeconnectoron
oneend anda roundpowerconnector for the
deviceserver on the otherend.
Connectionto the netwoerkistypicallymadewith
CAT-5 cable and an RJ-45 connector that are not
suppliedintheCOMM-ELkit.These should be
obtainedaccordingto the advice ofyour IT support
department.
Mounting and wiring
MounttheAKC55-MPM piggybackpower supply
boardboard atthe toprighthand corner ofthe
AKC55PS board (often called the “PS/COMM
board”)atpositionJ13,whichisa3-positionterminal
striplabeled ModemPwr.
1. Mount the LantronixUDS-10device server on a flat
surface
2. From the upperright handcorner ofthe PS/COMM
board,remove the #6nut with itsattached starlock
washer.Loosenthe three screws in theJ13 terminal
stripandslide the metalprongs ofthe MPM board
downbehind the screws (twobehind each).Re-
tightenthe screws.
3. Replace the nut andre-tighten.Thisisanimportant
stepto stabilize the assembly.
4. Plug the white male Molex-type connectorofthe
powercord into theconnector atthebottom of
MPMboard. Orient theconnector sothat theclip is
atthetop.(The top pinis negative; the bottompin is
positive.)
5. Plug the roundend ofthepower cord intothe UDS-
10at the locationlabeled 9-30vdc.
6. Identify the twopartsof the 95-05RS232
(COMM8)communicationcable:
a. Aten-foot (3m) flat, gray, 8-conductorcable
with an RJ-45 connector on one end and a 26-
pinkeyedconnector on theother.
b. An RJ-45 adapterthat fits the 25-pinfemale
connector labeled Serialon theUDS-10.
Notethat only sevenpins areused (ofa
possible25).
7. Plug the RJ-45connector into theadapter and insert
the adapter intothe connector labeled Serialon the
UDS-10.
8. Insert the 26-pinkeyed connectorinto thecorre-
spondingsocket at J8near thetop leftcorner ofthe
AKC55PS (PS/COMM) board.
Configuration
Whenmouuntingandwiringiscomplete,boththe
deviceserverand theAKC 55must beconfigured.
Device server configuration
1. Attach the UDS-10device serverto your
computer’sserialportusing a serial cable (and
appropriateadaptersif needed) from theconnector
labeled Serialon the UDS-10 to a serial port on
yourPC.
2. RunWindowsHyperTerminaloranotherterminal
programtoestablishcommunicationsbetweenyour
PCandthedeviceserver.TheUDS-10originally
comesconfigured for9600 baud,8 data bits,1 stop
bit,andnoparity.Youmay need tochangefrom
9600 to other speeds to get readable text on your
screen.
3. ToentertheSetup/configurationmode,removeand
restorepowertothedeviceserverwhileholding
downthe lowercasex keyonyour PC.
4. Confirm that the deviceserverisinsetupmode by
pressingtheENTERkey.Ifnecessary,repeatstep 3.
5. Select 0 (Server configuration)fromtheChange
SetupMenu. Enter:
IPaddress nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn
Gatewayaddress nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn
Netmask:numberofbitsforhost 8
Changetelnet configpassword N
Thenumbersrepresentedabove by nnn, etc.,should
beobtainedformyour IT support department.
To enable DHCP, set IPaddress to 0.0.0.0
To enable BOOTP, set IPaddress to 0.0.2.0
6. Now select 1(Channel1configuration)fromthe
ChangeSetupMenu,andenter:

Manual.
1. FromtheMainMenugotoConfigure/Alarms/
Modem…thescreen willlooklikethis…
2. HighlighttheModemfield.Toggletoprogrammode
bypressingthe+/- key.Alistbox will appear with
severaloptions. Select Lantronixand press EN-
TER.
3. Nowmovethehighlight(cursor)to valuefieldfor
Baud,toggle to programmode (+/-), andselect
57600fromthe list box.Remember to pressENTER
aftermakingyourselection.

4. Whenyouhavefinishedmodemconfiguration,the
screenwilllooklikethis:

Configuration of the AKC 55, Alarm Routing:
1. StartattheAlarm Configuration Screen (fromthe
MainMenu,selectConfiguration,thenAlarms). On
theAlarmConfigurationscreen,selectRouting.This
isthescreen that appears:
2. In theAlarm Routing screen,selectIPNetworkand
pressENTER.The screen yousee isfor the firstof
thetwopossibleIPdestinations.FillintheName
andIPAddressfields.TheIPaddress,whichyou
cangetfrom your ITdepartment, is theaddress of
thenetwork devicethatwillreceivealarmcalls.

3. Next, select theType:field (the defaultreads
RS232) and toggleit to Modem.
4. If you want thisaddresstoreceivenotificationwhen
alarmsarecleared,togglethedefault No inthenext
linetoYes.
5. Toestablish a schedule foralarms to besent to this
address,changetheSchedule1 fieldto Standard
fromNot Used.This willcause a scheduleto
appearforediting:
Selecting Alarms to Route via Ethernet
1. Press the EXITkey (onyour PC,the ESCkey) until
youreturnto theAlarm Routing screen. (If you get
lost, press the MENU key or, on your PC, repeat-
edlypress the ESCkeyto reach theMainMenu.
(Fromthe MainMenu,selectConfiguration,Alarms,
Routing.)
2. Once in theAlarmRoutingscreen you canselect
whichalarmtypesyouwishtobesentbyEthernet
byselectingXfromthelistboxinsteadofthe default
–inNetwork column 1. Dothis foreach classof
alarmsyouwantsentto the network receiver.
Inthe systemshown below,all System, RackPres-
sure, Caseand Misc. alarms will be sent out over the
networkvia the LantronixDeviceServer.
