Components description
Introduction
This section describes the individual components of the HRV 501. Please use the Fig. 1
illustration on page 4 for reference
Cabinet
Cabinet parts are made of aluzink coated sheet metal, finished with powder paint. Cabi-
net is internal sound and heat insulated, with fire retardant polyester foam. The unit´s
cabinet is designed for mounting in 10-40° C ambient temperature
Filters
The unit is standard equipped with class F7 cassette filter on supply air and G4 cassette
filter on exhaust air. These filters remove dust and particles, in both airflows going to
the heat exchanger. These filters protects the heat exchanger and improves the inside
en
vironment
During the filter timer period of
4380 hours, both fan speeds will increase, to compen-
sate for higher filters resistance. At every 500 hours decrease in remaining filter time,
each fan increases by 1%, without changing the differences in speed be
tween the two
fans Speed 4 will only be changed if initially calibrated below the default 100%
Heat exchanger
The heat exchanger moves the heat from extract air to the supply air. The heat ex-
changer is rotating slowly in order to move the exchanger parts from extract air to sup-
ply side
1. Heat is initially accumulate in the exchanger’s metal at the extract side
2. Secondly releasing this heat again to the supply air, after the exchanger has ro-
tated the heated area, to the supply air section.
Fans
Supply air fan supply fresh outdoor air through the unit’s heat exchanger to the distri-
bution ducts, where it
´s distributed to bedrooms, living rooms and possibly sauna or
steam bath.
The extract air
fan draws used and moistened air from inside, through the unit and heat
exchanger, in which most of the heat is moved to supply air. Finally the air is exhausted
to the outside.
Safety switch
When opening the unit, the safety switch breaks the power supply, and operation will
stop immediately.

For safety reasons, the internal safety switch cuts off power supply when the units front
cover is removed. Remounting the front cover enables operation again.
Electric heating
element
(accessory)
Additional heat can be applied, if installing an electrical heat element (accessory list at
page
32) The heat element increases the supply air temperature, to compensate any
temperature drop over the heat exchanger in cold operation conditions.
Functionality described on in ventilation func
tionality at page 10
Electrical temperature set point described on page 18.
External humidistat
(accessory)
This unit features an external humidistat connection, for optional comfort enhance-
ment.
Place the humidistat in areas where humidity changes rapidly, e.g. bathrooms.
When air humidity is higher than set point, fan speed will increase to fan speed 4, until
humidity again is lower than set point, and the unit returns, to normal operation

Air flow and filters
Introduction
This section describes the airflows and filters of HRV 501.
Important
This ventilation unit should operate continuously!
If operation stops, it could result in leaking cold air from outside, giving condensate
water in ducts and unit, and in worst cases, dripping water from air diffusers
Function
The unit supplies fresh air, drawn in from the outside, to living rooms including sauna
and steam bath if present.
The dirty and humid air is drawn out from the kitchen, the living rooms, the baths etc.
and led into the unit, where the unit reuses the heat from the dirty air to warm up the
fresh outdoor air before this is blown into the house.

•T2 – House supply air, heated by the extract air from inside the house
•T3 – Extracted indoor air, used to heat the incoming fresh outdoor air
•T4 - Exhaust air (used and polluted air) is ducted out of the house
Filter guard

Ventilation functionality
Introduction
This section gives you a description of the ventilation functions of HRV 501.
Level of ventilation
The overall level of ventilation can be controlled automatically by using the week pro-
gram, or manually by selecting a fixed fan speed, as described at page 16
Temperature com-
pensated operation
The rotor heat exchanger is controlled electronically, to optimize indoor comfort in dif-
ferent outside temperature conditions.
•Heat recovery in situations when inside temperature is 3°C higher than outside
temperature
•Cooling in summer conditions, when inside temperature is too high, and out-
side temperature is low enough to cool down the residence
•Restore inside chill, when outside temperature is 3°C higher than inside.
Below table shows when heat or chill recovery is active
Figur 2
When rotor is off, it will turn for 60 seconds each hour, for hygienic reasons.

Defrosting
The unit is equipped with a defrosting functionality, to protect the exchanger from
stopping, and eventually prevent permanent damage to the unit.
If both:
•The outside temp is below -15°C
•The heat exchanger efficiency is low (fx. due to high air flow)
for 30 minutes
or more, the defrosting will start automatically.
Defrost will:
1. Decrease supply fan with 1% each 60 seconds until adequate efficiency is
achieved.
2. If supply fan finally decreases below 20%, it will switch off.
3. When switched off, new measurements are executed every 30 minutes.
4. When the efficiency or outside temp is exceeding the limits, reverse operation
starts, initial supply fan 20% on, and 1% increase each 60 seconds
Electric heating ele-
ment
(accessory)
Heating is active if supply air is below temperature set
point. (page
18)Heating deactivates again if temperature is
set point +2°C or more
The electric
heating element has 10 steps. The function of
these steps is to keep the electric heating element lit for 1
to 10 seconds during a period of 10 seconds. The steps
are calculated each 60 seconds according below scheme:
Condition
Action
If supply air temperature T2 is lower than Tmin
Increases one step
If supply air temperature T2 is between T
min
and T
min
+2
No change
If supply air temperature T2 is higher than T
min
+2
Decrease heat one step
Fireplace
When igniting the fireplace, it could be a help to stop the HRV 501 exhaust fan in 5
minutes, resulting in over pressure inside the house: The air will then rather escape
through the fireplace and chimney instead, reducing the risk of smoke in the living
room.
