(1) Attach the spokeshave blade to the
Do g -Bo n e with the brass nuts (A).
Place this assembly
in a bevel-up position
on the sharpening
block with the bevel
just overhanging the
edge (B).
(2) Next position the honing guide on the
Do g -Bo n e but do not tighten it into place.
(3) To establish the bevel angle, place a straight
edge on the bevel so it fully contacts the bevel
surface, then slide the honing guide wheel to
contact the straight edge (C–D).
Once this bevel angle is determined, lock the device
down. The assembly is now ready to use (E).
(4) For future reference,
mark the location of
the sharpening guide
on the Dog-Bone.
One could either place
a strip of tape on the
Dog-Bone and mark
the tape, or scratch
this reference into
the surface. Note that
after many uses, the
reference marks may
need re-calibration (F).
(5) If a secondary
bevel is desired,
reposition the
sharpening guide
towards the edge
by 3/8" or invert
the assembly and
use the straight
edge to visualize
the secondary
bevel (G–H).

The Dog-Bone blade holder was developed to safely
and consistently re-grind the bevel on the spokeshave
blades. The best results are achieved on a low speed
grinder with a wheel 8″ in diameter or greater. Frequent
cooling of the blade is recommended if the grinder is not
self-whetting. A bracket supported sharpening system
is recommended. If your bench grinder does not have
a bracket supported system, after market systems are
available or a shop-made system can be fashioned. For
illustrative purposes, the photos below show the Tormek
sharpener with the square edge jig (A) and the Tormek
bracket system adapted to an 8″ bench grinder (B).
(1) Attach the spokeshave blade to the Do g -Bo n e
then insert this assembly into the sharpening jig.
Establish the bevel angle relative to the grinding
wheel. The best point of wheel contact is midway
on the bevel. Make sure the bevel tracks parallel
along its length (C).
(2) The re-grind will result in a hollow ground bevel.
If slight unground areas remain on either end
of the cutting edge or near the cutting edge,
do not chase them. On small blades, do stay shy
of the edge. This helps preserve the blade depth.
Over grinding wastes good blade stock and the
unground areas will probably be caught on future
on future re-grinds (D).
(3) Light honing of
this hollow ground
bevel on a block
or stone creates
an exquisite edge
(E).
(4) Hollow grinding the face: If this is a desired detail or
if the blade face has been “dubbed off” (loss of
atness toward the edge), the face of the blade
can also be hollow ground with the Do g -Bo n e .
A large diameter wheel is required and grinding
should be halted
within 1/16"–1/8"
of the edge (F).
The face can now
be lapped / honed
on a stone.
