This is the instructions for the Installation, Operation and Maintenance of Horizontal Split
Case (HSC) Pumps manufactured by us. We have tried to cover majority of the technical
details, procedures and work instructions pertaining to satisfactory and technically sound
practice for Installation, Operation and Maintenance of our pumps. However, if you need any
further technical assistance in a specific situation, we will be happy to provide the requisite
feedback and make you comfortable in the event of such occurrence. Our team of highly

1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Horizontal split case pumps is the outcome of extensive research and development,
precision machining on sophisticated machine tools, rigorous quality checks at various stages
of manufacture and excellent workmanship during assembly, followed by validation of hydraulic
performance through comprehensive series of test run. The typical design feature is `shaft
through impeller eye’, where in the impeller is mounted on the pump shaft along a centre plan,
which in turn is supported between two bearings located at the drive and non drive ends of the
pump casing. As the nomenclature suggests, the pump casing is split horizontally along the
shaft axis of rotation to make it two parts. This feature permits easy removal of the rotation
assembly for maintenance work without disconnection the suction and discharge pipe lines.
Horizontal Split Case Pumps, when properly installed and operated with reasonable
care and maintenance will operate satisfactorily for a long period of service. Subsequent
paragraphs explain the general principles which should be followed to ensure trouble free
operation of the supplied unit.
The booklet covers the instructions for the following models of HSC pumps.

Necessary repairs have not been carried out by our personal or have been
carried out without our prior written consent.
The articles supplied have been changed without our prior written consent.
The spare parts used are not original Pump parts.
The articles supplied are used amateurishly, carelessly, improperly and/or
negligently.
The articles supplied become defective due to outside circumstances
beyond our control.
Furthermore, all deliveries are subject our “General conditions of delivery and
payment“, which will be forwarded to you, free of charge and request.

While you correspond with us for your requirements of spare parts or for any technical
information, please always quote these details in your letter.
1.2 INSPECTION AND DELIVERD ITEMS.
Check the consignment immediately on arrival for damage and conformity
with the advice note.
In case of damage and/or missing parts, have a report drawn up by the
carrier at once.
2. STORAGE & PROTECTION
All the pumps are shop serviced and ready for operation when delivered, but there is an
occasion when considerable time elapses between the delivery date and the time the pump is
put into operation. Equipment, which is not in service, should be kept in a clean, dry area. If
equipment is to be stored for long periods of time (3 months or more), the following precautions
should be taken to insure that the equipment remains in good condition.
1. Be sure that the bearings are fully lubricated.
2. Unpainted –machined surfaces, which are subject o corrosion, should be protected
by some corrosive resistant coating.
3. The shaft should be rotated 10 to 15 revolutions by hand periodically in order to
spread the lubricant over all the bearing surfaces. Suitable intervals are from one to
three months. Depending on atmospheric conditions, etc. In order to insure that the

pump shaft does not begin to sag, do not leave the shaft in the same position each
time.
4. Fresh lubricant must be applied to bearings upon removal of equipment from
storage.
3. INSTALLATION
3.1 LOCATION
Several factors should be considered when selecting a location for the unit (pump, base, drive
and coupling). The unit should be accessible for both inspection and maintenance. Headroom
should be provided for the use of crane, hoist or other necessary lifting devices. The pump
should be located as close as possible to the liquid supply so that the suction line Is short and
direct. Location should be requiring a minimum of elbows and fittings in the discharge line to
minimize the friction losses. The unit should be protected against flooding.
3.2 FOUNDATION.
The foundation should be sufficiently substantial to absorb vibration and to form a permanent
rigid support for the base plate. Concrete is most widely used for foundation. Before pouring the
foundation, locate anchor bolts as per the outline drawing. Allow for3/4 inch to 1 ½ inch of grout
between foundation and base plate. The top surface of the foundation should be roughened to
provide a good bond for the grout.

3.3 MOUNTING
Following is the set of step wise instructions to be followed for Pump-Motor-Base frame
mounted units on their respective foundations.

Lift the pump, Motor and base frame assembly with the help of slings of adequate
strength suitably fastened at appropriate locations marked on the base frame (see
figure).

Now lower it on to the place provided on the foundation suitably.
Using wedges, placed as close to the foundation bolts as possible, raise the pump to the
desired elevation.
Placement of wedges for leveling
Using a sprit level, dust the wedges so that the suction and
discharge flanges are vertical.
Align the coupling as mentioned in the instructions for COUPLING
ALIGNMENT.
Grouting of Pump-Motor-Base should be carried out as per the
guidelines provided under “GROUTING” to the complete the installation.

3.4 COUPLING ALIGNMENT.
The pump unit has been manufactured to allow field alignment. The unit must be properly
aligned at the time of installation. Reliable trouble-free and efficient operation of a unit depends
upon correct alignment. Misalignment may be the cause of noisy pump operation, vibration,
premature bearing failure, or excessive coupling wear. Factors that may change the alignment
of the pumping unit are settling of the foundation, springing of the base plate, piping strains, a
shift of the pump or drive on the foundation. When the checking coupling alignment, remember
flexible couplings are not intended to be used as universal joints. The Purpose of a flexible
coupling is to compensate for temperature changes and to permit end movement of the shafts
without interference with each other.
Two types of misalignment may exist: Parallel Misalignment and Angular misalignment. Limits
of misalignments are stated in the coupling manufacturer’s instructions, but should be kept to a
minimum for maximum life of equipment components.
To check coupling alignment, the following procedure should be followed:
Set the coupling gap to the dimension shown on the outline drawing.
Check for parallel misalignment by placing a straight edge across
both coupling halves at four points 90°C apart. Correct alignment occurs when the
straight edge is level across the coupling halves at all points.
Check angular misalignment with a feeler gauge at four points.
Correct the alignment occurs when the same gauge just enters between the halves at all
four points.

Angular and parallel misalignment is corrected by shifting the motor and adding or removing
shims from under the motor feet. After each change, it is necessary to recheck the alignment of
the coupling halves adjustment in one direction may disturb adjustment already made in another
direction.
An alternative method for checking coupling alignment is by use of dial indicator as shown on
the outline drawing.
Scribe index lines on coupling halves or mark where the indicator
points rests.
Set indicator dial to zero.
Slowly turn both coupling halves so that the index lines match or the
indicator point is always on the mark.
Observe dial reading to determine whether adjustments are needed.
Acceptable alignment occurs when total indicator reading does not exceed 0.10 mm for
both parallel and angular alignment.
Alignment should be checked and corrected as required after:
Mounting
Grouting has hardened
Foundation bolts are tightened
Piping is connected
Pump, Driver, or Base frame is moved for any reason.
3.5 GROUTING.
I. Clean the all the surface of the Base frame, Pump and Motor
pedestals that will come into contact with the grout.
II. Built the dam around the foundation.
III. Use a good quality Non Shrink Grout Mixture.
IV. Thoroughly wet the foundation that will come into contact with the
grout using rich cement slurry.

V. Pour grout through the grout hole into the base plate up to the level
of dam. Adequate care should be taken while pouring the grout, to avoid
formation of air bubbles. This can be achieved either by stirring of the grout by
a vibrator or directly pumping of grout into place.
VI. After the grout has hardened (usually 48 Hours) thoroughly, tighten
foundation bolts and check the alignment.
VII. Approximately days after the grout has been poured or when it is
thoroughly dry, apply an oil based paint to exposed the edges of the grout to
prevent air and moisture from coming in contact with the grout.
3.6 FACTORS THAT MAY DISTURB ALIGNMENT.
The unit should be periodically checked for alignment. If the unit does not stay in line
after being properly installed, the following are possible reasons:
Setting, seasoning of the foundation.
Pipe strains, distorting or shifting of the units.
Wear of bearings.
4. SUCTION AND DISCHRGE PIPING.
When installing the pump piping, make be sure to observe the following precautions.
Piping should be always run up to the pump. Do not move pump to pipe as this may
make final alignment impossible.
Both suction and discharge piping should be properly aligned and supported
independently near the pump, so that no strain is transmitted to the pump when the
flange bolts are tightened.
Install piping as straight as possible, avoiding unnecessary bends, where ever
necessary, use long radius 45-degree or 90-degree bends to decrease friction
losses.
Remove burrs and sharp edges when making up the pipe joints.
Make sure that all piping joints are air –tight.

It is advisable to increase the size of both suction and discharge pipes at the pump
connection to decrease the loss of head from friction,
Where reducers are used, eccentric reducers are to be fitted in suction lines and
straight taper reducers in discharge and vertical lines. Misuse of reducers may
cause the formation of air pockets in the pipe and thus preventing the correct
operation of the pump.
The suction pipe should be as short and direct as possible. Where suction lift is not
very high, it is advisable to use a foot valve. Horizontal suction line must have a
gradual rise to the pump.
Typical suction pipes layouts, “Correct and Incorrect”, are shown in figures as
below.
The pump must never be throttled by the use of a valve on the suction side if the
valve provided. Suction valves should be used only to isolate the pump for
maintenance purpose.
The discharge pipe is usually provided by a non-return valve or check valve and a
discharge gate valve as shown in below picture. The check valve is to protect the
pump from excessive back pressure and reverse rotation of the unit and to prevent
back flow into the pump in case of stoppage or failure of the driver. The discharge
valve is used in priming, starting and when shutting down the pump.

After all the piping is complete, recheck the pump and driver
alignment.
5. OPERATION OF HORIZONTAL SPLIT CASE PUMPS.
In order to ensure satisfactory operation of t pumps, review carefully and perform all the
operation outlined as below.
5.1. PRECOMMISONNING CHECKS.
Check the pump bearings are fitted with sufficient amount of lubricant.
In addition to the above, it is advisable to check the motor bearings for lubrication.
This should be done in accordance manufacturer’s recommendation as listed in the
motor installation manual.
When possible, turn the pump shaft by hand to insure that the parts do not bind.
Motor is correctly wired to starting device, check voltage, phase and frequency on
motor name plate with line circuit.
Before the coupling alignment, check the drive rotation to see that it matches the
pump rotation. Pump rotation is indicated by arrow in the pump casing.
The unit base plate is grouted and bolted to the foundation.

Fill the suction with liquid and check for leakage of joints. Tighten the leaking joints
or replace gaskets where ever necessary.
5.2. STARTING
Close the discharge line valve.
Open fully in suction line valve if provided.
Turn on seal water to the stuffing box where external pipe supplied.
Prime the pump I one of the following ways.
If the pump operates under positive suction conditions, open vent valve on the
top of the pump casing. After all entrained air has escaped, closed the vent

valves. Rotate the shaft, if possible, to allow any air trapped in the impeller
passages to escape.
If the pump operates on a suction lift and a foot valve is included in the
system, fill the pump and the suction line with liquid from an outside source.
Trapped air should be allowed to escape through the vent valve while filling.
If the pump operates on a suction lift and no foot valve is provided, use a
vacuum pump or ejector operated by air, steam, and water etc .to evacuate air
from the pump case and suction line by connecting the ejector to the priming
connection on top of the pump case
Start the driver –this should be done as per the recommendations of the motor and
its control/switch gear manufacturers
After the pump has attained full speed, open the discharge valve. This should be
done slowly in order to brings gradual load on the driver, and to prevent
development of water hammer in the distribution system. This is especially
important, as water hammer can cause serious damage to the piping and other
equipment in the installation.
Do not operate pump for prolonged periods with closed discharge valve, so as to
avoid overheating.
5.3. RUNNING
While the pump is running at its rated speed and check the following periodic
inspection.
1.Stuffing box (soft packed pumps only). Ensure there is sufficient leakage to
lubricate the packing
2.Bearings. Check the bearing Temperature, which should not exceed pumped
liquid temperature of 80 degree C whichever is lower.
3.With mechanical seal fitted pumps, check that there is no leakage from the
stuffing box
4.Suction and discharge gauge reading.
5.Check Noise level as per the STD
6.Check Vibration level as per the STD
7.Check the liquid capacity delivered as per the order
8.Check the liquid pressure delivered as per the order.
The pumps should be shut down at once for the above reasons are not given
properly. And after corrected the troubles the pump should start again and check the above
points.
5.4. SHUTDOWN
Close the discharge valve
Stop the driver
Shut off external sealing liquid if supplied, to relieve stuffing box pressure.
Close the valve in the pump suction line, if fitted.

Disconnect the power from driver.
Drain the pump.
Successful operation of the pump depends on accurate alignment. It is
recommended to recheck the alignment after preliminary run.
6. MAINTENANCE OF HORIZONTAL SPLIT CASE PUMPS
6.1. LUBRICATION
6.1.1 COUPLINGS: Couplings with rubber drive elements do not require lubrication.
6.1.2 BEARINGS: Care and maintenance of bearings is a matter of ensuring that they are:
Correctly lubricated at intervals a laid down in routine maintenance chart.
Thoroughly clean grease fitting and outside of bearing housing
Remove drain plug
Inject clean, new grease forcing out the old.
Start and run the pump for a short time to eject any excess grease.
Wipe off all excess grease and replace drain plug.
Tool used and work areas should be cleaned
To remove the bearing ,use correctly suited withdrawal equipment
Damage can be caused by exerting force against the outer ring of ball bearing. Ball
bearings should not be dismantled. Clean bearings thoroughly with an approved
fluid. Dry the bearings by spinning with dry compressor air of by hand. Do not spin a
clean dry bearing. Inspect the bearing for wear, fracture, cracks, corrosion or other
damage which may necessitates bearing replacement. Pack both sides of bearing
with grease. Check that the bearing, shaft and housing are cleaned and un
damaged. Recharge with grease to a maximum of two thirds full. Refit the bearing
onto the shaft and press for tap into position.
6.1.3 BEARINGS DETAILS:
The pumps are fitted with antifriction heavy duty ball bearings at driving and non
driving ends. The detail of bearings is as under.
6.1.4 LUBRICATION DETAILS:
Normally pumps are shipped with a high quality, lithium soap base, ball and roller bearing
grease filled bearings only. Regreaseing interval depends upon the operating speed of the
unit.

To recharge the bearings with fresh grease, use grease gun and feed through the two
grease nipples provided.
DONOT APPLY LUBRICANT WHEN PUMP IS RUNNING.
After 10,000 hours or two years whichever is earlier remove bearings from pumps,
degrease, clean, recharge with fresh grease and refit in accordance with reassembly
instructions.
6.1.5 .RECOMMENDED GREASE SPECIFICATIONS.
6.2. STUFFING BOX DETAILS
6.2.1 PACKING ( Non Asbestos)
On packed pumps the packing is installed prior to shipment. All packing used are the
highest grade material. Before pump is put into operation check the condition of the
packing. If pump is installed within sixty (60) days after shipment the packing will be in good
condition with a sufficient supply of lubrication. If pump is stored for a longer period it may
be necessary to repack the stuffing box. In all cases, however, we recommend an
inspection of the packing before pump is started. The standard pump packing is made from
graphite solid plate cotton packing (non asbestos).
A soft, well lubricated packing reduces stuffing box resistance and prevents excessive wear
on the shaft or shaft sleeve. Many brands of packing on the market have the desired
qualities.
Eccentricity of the shaft or sleeve through the packing could result in excess leakage that
cannot be compensated for. Correction of this defect is very important. Packing should be

checked frequently and replaced as service indicates. Six months might be a reasonable
expected life, depending on operating conditions. It is impossible to give exact
predictions. A packing tool should be used to remove all old packing from stuffing box.
Never reuse old and lifeless packing or merely add some new rings. Make sure the stuffing
box is thoroughly cleaned before new packing installed. Also check the condition of the
shaft or sleeve for possible scoring or eccentricity, make replacements where necessary.
New packing (non-asbestos) should be placed carefully into the stuffing box. If molded
rings are used, the rings should be opened sideways and the joints pushed into the stuffing
box first. The rings are installed one at a time, each ring seated firmly and the joints
staggered at about a90 °C rotation from each preceding joint.
Champion Style-3116-Graphited cotton greasy packing is used in the standard supply.
However packing suitable for liquid handled is also supplied against specific requirement.

6.2.2 MECHANICAL SEAL
General instruction for operation of the various mechanical seal arrangements are included
below. It is not feasible to include detailed instructions for all mechanical seals in this
booklet because of the almost unlimited number of possible combinations and
arrangements. Instead, seal manufacturer’s instructions will be included as a separate
supplement to this book, where required.
Mechanical seals are precision products and should be treated with care. Use
special care when handling seals. Clean oil and clean parts are essential to prevent
scratching the finely lapped sealing faces. Even light scratches on these faces could
result in leaky seals.
Normally, mechanical seals require no adjustment or maintenance except routine
replacement of worn or broken parts.
A mechanical seal which has been used should not be put back into service until
the sealing faces have been replaced or relapped.(Relapping is generally
economical only in seals two inches in size and above)
Four important rules which should always be followed for optimum seal life are:
Keep the seal faces as clean as possible.
Keep the seal as cool as possible.
Assure that the seal always has proper lubrication.
If seal is lubricated with filtered fluid, clean filter frequently.

6.3. ROUTINE MAINTENANCE CHART
Preventive maintenance schedule is a periodical checks and precautions by which
possibilities of failure and breakdown will be rare.
7. TECHNICAL DATA
7.1. DIRECTION OF ROTATION
The standard direction of rotation is anticlockwise when viewed from coupling side.
The pumps with reverse direction of rotation (clockwise) can be supplied on request.
The direction of rotation can be reversed easily without changing any part.

7.2. WEAR RING DETAILS.
Pumps are supplied with casing wear rings. The diametrical clearance between impeller
and casing rings should be minimum 0.25 mm and maximum 0.70 mm.
7.3. IMPELLER DETAILS
Following pump types are fitted with single entry impeller DP 50/30 A, DP 50/0B, DP 80/38,
DP 65/38 and DP 65/38 M.
For other types, Double entry impellers are fitted.
7.4. COUPLING DETAILS
Pumps will be supplied with snap wrap coupling as s standard scope of supply. However
other types like pin bush, tyre, spacer coupling can also be providing on request.
7.5. MINIMUM SAFE FLOW
The pump should not run against closed discharge valve as this will cause an increase in
temp/formation of steam in the pump. This may cause shaft damage, impeller erosion,
short life of bearings and damage to stuffing boxes or mechanical shaft seals due to stress
or vibration. The minimum flow rate must be at least 30% of the best efficiency point flow
rate.
7.6. NPSH A (NET POSITIVE SUCTION HEAD AVILABLE) AND NPSH R V(NET
POSITIVE SUCTION HEAD REQUIRED)
NPSH A available should be at least greater than 0.5 m than NPSH R for satisfactory
operation of the pump. If NPSH A < NPSH R then pump cavitations may occurs which in
turns damage the impeller.
7.7. PIPE LINE VELOCITIES.
For satisfactory operation of pumps and to minimize frictional losses, it is recommended to
maintain velocity in suction pipe line as 1.5 to 2 m/s and in delivery line it should be 2.5 to 3
m/s by providing higher pipe diameter than pump suction / delivery size.

8. OVERHAULING
With normal daily operating spell, the pump will be due for overhaul after about 5000
working hours. This should be done by skilled personnel. Please refer to the cross sectional
drawing while dismantling and reassembling the pump.
8.1 DISMANTLING PROCEDURE
Store all loose components carefully in a wooden box. Remove sealing connection given to
lantern ring/mechanical seal, temperature indicator, etc.
Disengage pump coupling from motor coupling. Drain the pump by removing drain
plug and opening air vent valve.
Remove the nuts and locating pin jointing the upper half casing and lower half
casing.
Remove all insert joints nuts at both ends.
Insert a screw driver or peg bar into the slot between the two halves and separate
and lifting off the upper half casing. Remove the upper half casing, taking enough
care not to damage the impeller and casing wear ring.
Tap the inserts with the soft hammer to break the seat between the insert and lower
half casing and lift the rotating unit out of the lower half casing so that none of the
parts will be damaged. Take out the rotating unit & keep it on rubber or wooden
sheet in clean7 dry place for further dismantling purpose.
Remove the pump coupling and coupling key.
Remove the four hex screws from each bearing housing and remove the bearing
housing from bearings take it off the shaft.
Remove bearing lock nut and lock washer from NDE side. Remove NDE bearing
from shaft by the use of bearing puller. Remove driving end bearing in the same
manner.
Remove oil seals from the insert from DE & NDE side. Remove shoulder Rings from
the shaft by using puller.
Remove liquid deflector from shaft.
Remove the gland nuts from each gland. Remove gland, gland packing & lantern
rings from insert.( For Soft Packed Pumps)
Slide inserts off the shaft.
Remove grub screw holding mechanical seal & slode off mechanical seal on both
sides from the shaft. .( For Mechanical seal Pumps).
Take out casing rings on DE & NDE side
Unscrew DE side shaft sleeve and slide it off the shaft from DE side. Remove the
impeller from shaft. Remove the impeller key( If it is CCW)
Unscrew the NDE side shaft sleeve and slide it off the shaft from NDE side(If it is
CCW)
Unscrew NDE side shaft sleeve and slide it off the shaft from NDE side. Remove the
impeller from shaft. Remove the impeller key( If it is CW)
Unscrew the DE side shaft sleeve and slide it off the shaft from DE side(If it is CW)
