Turning Off Your Computer
Safety Instructions
This chapter provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that the
following conditions exist:
lYou have performed the steps in Turning Off Your Computer and Safety Instructions.
lYou have read the safety information that shipped with your computer.
lA component can be replaced or—if purchased separately—installed by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.

Recommended Tools
The procedures in this document may require the use of a small Phillips screwdriver size #2.
Turning Off Your Computer

1. Shut down the operating system.

2. Ensure that the computer and all attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut
down your operating system, press and hold the power button for about 4 seconds to turn them off.
Safety Instructions
Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your own personal safety.


1. Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.

2. Turn off your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer).

3. Disconnect all telephone or network cables from the computer.

4. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

NOTICE: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer.

NOTICE: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs; if
you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly
aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.
NOTICE: To avoid damaging the computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the computer.
NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device.

5. Press and hold the power button while the system is unplugged to ground the system board.

NOTICE: Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of the
computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity, which could harm internal components.

Configuring Your Computer After Removing or Installing a PCI/PCI Express Card

Removing a PCI/PCI Express Card

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Uninstall the card's driver and software from the operating system. For more information, see the Quick Reference Guide.

3. Remove the computer cover. See Removing the Computer Cover.

4. Remove the screw holding the card retention bracket.

5. Lift the card retention bracket and set it aside in a secure place.

6. If necessary, disconnect any cables connected to the card.
lFor a PCI card, grasp the card by its top corners, and ease it out of its connector.
lFor a PCI Express card, pull the securing tab, grasp the card by its top corners, and then ease it out of its connector.

7. If you are replacing an existing card, go to step 6 of Installing a PCI/PCI Express Card.

8. Install a filler bracket in the empty card-slot opening.

9. Replace the card retention bracket. See Replacing the Card Retention Bracket.

10. Replace the computer cover, reconnect the computer and devices to electrical outlets, and then turn them on.

11. To complete the removal procedure, see Configuring Your Computer After Removing or Installing a PCI/PCI Express Card.
Installing a PCI/PCI Express Card

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the computer cover. See Removing the Computer Cover.


NOTICE: Installing filler brackets over empty card-slot openings is necessary to maintain FCC certification of the computer. The brackets also keep dust
and dirt out of your computer.


3. Remove the screw holding the card retention bracket.

4. Lift the card retention bracket and set it aside in a secure place.

5. Remove the filler bracket to create a card-slot opening.

6. Prepare the card for installation.
See the documentation that came with the card for information on configuring the card, making internal connections, or otherwise customizing it for your
computer.

7. Align the card with the connector.

8. Place the card in the connector and press down firmly. Ensure that the card is fully seated in the slot.

9. Replace the card retention bracket. See Replacing the Card Retention Bracket.

10. Connect any cables that should be attached to the card.
See the documentation for the card for information about the card's cable connections.

11. Replace the computer cover, reconnect the computer and devices to electrical outlets, and then turn them on.

12. To complete the installation, see Configuring Your Computer After Removing or Installing a PCI/PCI Express Card.
Replacing the Card Retention Bracket
NOTE: If you are installing a PCI Express card into the x16 connector, ensure that the securing slot is aligned with the securing tab.

NOTICE: Do not route card cables over or behind the cards. Cables routed over the cards can prevent the computer cover from closing properly or
cause damage to the equipment.

Replace the card retention bracket ensuring that:
lThe guide clamp is aligned with the guide notch.
lThe tops of all cards and filler brackets are flush with the alignment bar.
lThe notch in the top of the card or filler bracket fits around the alignment guide.

1. Record all the screens in system setup (see System Setup) so that you can restore the correct settings in step 10.

2. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

3. Remove the computer cover (see Removing the Computer Cover).

4. Locate the battery socket (see System Board Components).

5. Carefully press the battery release lever away from the battery and the battery will pop out.

6. Remove the battery from the system and properly dispose of the battery.

7. Insert the new battery into the socket with the side labeled "+" facing up, then snap the battery into place.

8. Replace the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).

9. Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets, and then turn them on.

10. Enter system setup (see System Setup) and restore the settings you recorded in step 1.

CAUTION: A new battery can explode if it is incorrectly installed. Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the
manufacturer. Discard used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions.
NOTICE: If you pry the battery out of its socket with a blunt object, be careful not to touch the system board with the object. Ensure that the object is
inserted between the battery and the socket before you attempt to pry out the battery. Otherwise, you may damage the system board by prying off
the socket or by breaking circuit traces on the system board.

1. Ensure that all cables are connected, and fold cables out of the way.

2. Ensure that no tools or extra parts are left inside the computer.

3. Align the tabs at the bottom of the computer cover with the slots located along the edge of the computer.

4. Press the computer cover down and slide it towards the front of the computer until you feel the computer cover is securely installed.

5. Ensure that the cover is seated correctly.

6. Replace and tighten the two screws that secure the computer cover, using a screwdriver.

7. Turn the computer to the upright position.

8. Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets, and turn them on.

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Lay your computer on its side with the computer cover facing up.

3. Open the padlock, if applicable.

4. Loosen the two thumbscrews.

5. Pull the cover grip towards the back of the computer to release the cover.

6. Set the cover aside in a secure location.

Installing the Processor

Removing the Processor

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the computer cover (see Removing the Computer Cover).


3. Disconnect the power cables from the ATX_POWER and ATX_CPU connectors (see System Board Components) on the system board.

4. Remove the processor fan and heat sink assembly from the computer (see Replacing the Processor Fan and Heat Sink Assembly).

5. Press and push the release lever down and out to release it from the tab that secures it.

6. Open the processor cover, if applicable.


NOTICE: Do not perform the following steps unless you are familiar with hardware removal and replacement. Performing these steps incorrectly could
damage your system board. For technical service, see the Quick Reference Guide.
CAUTION: Despite having a plastic shield, the heat sink assembly may be very hot during normal operation. Be sure that it has had sufficient time
to cool before you touch it.
NOTE: Unless a new heat sink is required for the new processor, reuse the original heat sink assembly when you replace the processor.

7. Lift up the processor to remove it from the socket, place it aside in a safe and secure place.
Leave the release lever extended in the release position so that the socket is ready for the new processor.
Installing the Processor

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Unpackthenewprocessor,beingcarefulnottotouchtheundersideoftheprocessor.

NOTICE: When replacing the processor, do not touch any of the pins inside the socket or allow any objects to fall on the pins in the socket.
NOTICE: Ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface on the back of the computer.
NOTICE: You must position the processor correctly in the socket to avoid permanent damage to the processor and the computer when you turn on the
computer.
NOTICE: Socket pins are delicate. To avoid damage, ensure that the processor is aligned properly with the socket, and do not use excessive force
when you install the processor. Be careful not to touch or bend the pins on the system board.

3. If the release lever on the socket is not fully extended, move it to that position.

4. For Inspiron 518, orient the front and rear alignment-notches on the processor with the front and rear alignment-notches on the socket.

5. Align the pin-1 corners of the processor and socket.

6. Set the processor lightly in the socket and ensure that the processor is positioned correctly.

7. When the processor is fully seated in the socket, close the processor cover, if applicable.
Ensure that the tab on the processor cover is positioned underneath the center cover latch on the socket.

8. Pivot the socket release lever back towards the socket, and snap it into place to secure the processor.

9. Clean the thermal grease from the bottom of the heat sink.

10. Apply the new thermal grease to the top of the processor.

11. Install the processor fan and heat sink assembly (see Replacing the Processor Fan and Heat Sink Assembly).

12. Replace the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).

13. Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets, and then turn them on.

Replacing a Hard Drive

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the computer cover (see Removing the Computer Cover).

3. Disconnect the power and data cables from the drive.

NOTE: The system does not support IDE devices.
NOTE: The 3.5-inch media card reader is not interchangeable with the hard drive carrier.

NOTICE: If you are replacing a hard drive that contains data you want to keep, back up your files before you begin this procedure.
NOTE: If you are not replacing the hard drive at this time, disconnect the other end of the data cable from the system board and set it aside. You
can use the data cable to install a hard drive at a later time.


4. Remove the four screws securing the hard drive to the chassis.

5. Slide the drive out away from the front of the computer.

6. If you are replacing the drive or installing a new one, check the documentation for the drive to verify that it is configured for your computer.

7. Slide the hard drive into the hard drive bay.

8. Align the four screw holes in the hard drive with the screw holes in the hard drive bay.

9. Replace and tighten the four screws to secure the hard drive to the chassis.

10. Connect the power and data cables to the drive.

11. Ensure that all the cables are properly connected and firmly seated.

12. Replace the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).

13. Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets, and then turn them on.
Replacing a CD/DVD Drive

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the computer cover (see Removing the Computer Cover).

3. Remove the front panel(see Replacing the Front Panel).

NOTICE: Ensure that you do not scratch the hard disk circuit board, while removing or replacing the hard drive.


4. Disconnect the power cable and the CD/DVD drive data cable from the back of the drive.

5. Remove the two screws securing the CD/DVD drive to the chassis.

6. Slide the CD/DVD drive out through the front of the computer.

7. If you are not replacing the drive:
a. Replace the drive panel insert (see Replacing the Drive Panel Insert).
b. Go to step 12.

8. Gently slide the drive into place.

9. Align the screw holes in the CD/DVD drive with the screw holes in the CD/DVD drive bay.

10. Replace and tighten the two screws securing the CD/DVD drive to the chassis.

11. Connect the power and data cables to the drive.

12. Replace the front panel (see Replacing the Front Panel).

13. Replace the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).

14. Connect your computer and devices to their electrical outlets, and turn them on.
Replacing a Media Card Reader

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the computer cover (see Removing the Computer Cover).


NOTE: If you are uninstalling the only CD/DVD drive in your computer and will not replace it at this time, disconnect the data cable from the system
board and set it aside.
NOTE: If you installed a new drive, see the documentation that came with the drive for instructions on installing any software required for drive
operation.


4. Disconnect the FlexBay USB cable and the power cable from the back of the Media Card Reader and from the internal USB connector (F_USB4) on the
system board (see System Board Components).

5. Remove the two screws securing the Media Card Reader.

6. Slide the Media Card Reader out through the front of the computer.

7. If you are not reinstalling the Media Card Reader, replace the drive panel insert. See Replacing the Drive Panel Insert.

8. If you are installing a new Media Card Reader:
a. Remove the drive panel insert (see Replacing the Drive Panel Insert).
b. Remove the Media Card Reader from its packaging.

9. Gently slide the Media Card Reader into place in the FlexBay slot.

10. Align the screw holes in the Media Card Reader with the screw holes in the FlexBay.

11. Tighten the two screws to secure the Media Card Reader.

12. Connect the FlexBay USB cable to the back of the Media Card Reader and to the internal USB connector (F_USB4) on the system board (see System
Board Components).

13. Replace the front panel(see Replacing the Front Panel).

14. Replace the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).

15. Connect your computer and devices to electrical outlets, and then turn them on.

NOTE: Ensure that the Media Card Reader is installed before the FlexBay cable is connected.

Align the tip of a Phillips screwdriver with the slot on the break-away metal plate and rotate the screwdriver outwards to break and remove the metal plate.
Replacing the Drive Panel Insert
Align the drive panel insert along the edges of the empty slot of the Media Card Reader and push the panel insert. The drive panel insert is locked in place.

Replacing the Chassis Fan



Replacing the Chassis Fan

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the computer cover (see Removing the Computer Cover).

3. Disconnect the chassis fan cable from the system board connector (CHASSIS_FAN).

4. Remove the four screws securing the chassis fan.

5. Slide the chassis fan towards the front of the computer and lift it up.

6. To install the chassis fan, slide it in place towards the back of the computer.

7. Tighten the four screws to secure the chassis fan.

8. Connect the chassis fan cable to the system board connector (CHASSIS_FAN).

9. Replace the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).
Replacing the Processor Fan and Heat Sink Assembly


1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the computer cover (see Removing the Computer Cover).
CAUTION: Before working inside your computer, read the safety information that shipped with your computer. For additional safety best
practices information, see the Regulatory Compliance Homepage at www.dell.com/regulatory_compliance.
CAUTION: To guard against likelihood of electric shock, laceration by moving fan blades or other unexpected injuries, always unplug your
computer from the electrical outlet before removing the cover.
NOTICE: Do not touch the fan blades when you are removing the chassis fan. This could damage the fan.

CAUTION: Despite having a plastic shield, the heat sink fan assembly may be very hot during normal operation. Be sure that it has had sufficient
time to cool before you touch it.
NOTICE: Do not touch the fan blades when you are removing the processor fan and heat sink assembly. This could damage the fan.
NOTICE: The processor fan with the heat sink is one single unit. Do not try to remove the fan separately.


3. Disconnect the processor fan cable from the CPU_FAN connector on the system board (see System Board Components).

4. Carefully move away any cables that are routed over the processor fan and heat sink assembly.

5. Follow the instructions below to replace the processory fan and heat sink assembly, depending on your computer model:

Inspiron 518
a. Loosen the four captive screws securing the processor fan and heat sink assembly and lift it straight up.
b. To reinstall the processor fan and heat sink assembly, align the captive screws on the processor fan and heat sink assembly to the four metal
screw hole projections on the system board.
c. Tighten the four captive screws.

Inspiron 519
a. Rotate the clamp lever 180 degrees counter-clockwise to release the clamp grip from the bracket projection.
b. Release the clamp grip from the bracket projection on the opposite side.
c. Rotate the heat sink assembly upward gently, and remove it from the computer. Lay the heat sink assembly down on its top, with the thermal
grease facing upward.
d. Place the heat sink and fan assembly back onto the heat-sink assembly bracket.
e. Ensure that the two clamp grips are aligned with the two bracket projections.

f. Hold the heat sink fan assembly in place and rotate the clamp lever 180 degrees clockwise to secure the heat sink and fan assembly.

6. Connect the processor fan and heat sink assembly cable to the CPU_FAN system board connector (see System Board Components).

7. Replace the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).

8. Connect your computer and devices to an electrical outlet, and turn them on.
