1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.



3. Remove the two screws that secure the audio board.

4. Lift the audio board out of the computer base.

1. Place the audio board in the computer base and replace the two screws that secure it.

2. Follow the instructions in Replacing the Palm Rest.

Replacing the Base Cover


Removing the Base Cover

1. Ensure that the computer is turned off.

2. Remove the battery (see Before Working Inside Your Computer).

3. Loosen the seven captive screws on the base cover and lift the cover off the computer at an angle as shown in the figure.

Replacing the Base Cover

1. Align the tabs on the base cover to the bottom of the computer.

2. Tighten the seven captive screws on the base cover.

3. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it clicks into place.

Before You Begin

Recommended Tools
Turning Off Your Computer
Before Working Inside Your Computer
This section provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that the
following conditions exist:
lYou have performed the steps in Turning Off Your Computer and Before Working Inside Your Computer.
lYou have read the safety information that shipped with your computer.
lA component can be replaced or—if purchased separately—installed by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.
Recommended Tools
The procedures in this document may require the following tools:
lSmall flat-blade screwdriver
lPhillips screwdriver
lHex nut driver
lFlash BIOS update program CD
Turning Off Your Computer

1. Save and close all open files and exit all open programs.

2. In Windows Vista®, click Start , click the arrow , and then click Shut Down.
The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process finishes.

3. Ensure that the computer and any attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut
down your operating system, press and hold the power button for at least 8 to 10 seconds until the computer turns off.
Before Working Inside Your Computer
Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your own personal safety.


1. Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.

2. Turn off your computer (see Turning Off Your Computer).

3. If the computer is connected to a docking device (docked), undock it. See the documentation that came with your docking device for instructions.
NOTICE: To avoid losing data, save and close all open files and exit all open programs before you turn off your computer.
CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.
NOTICE: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal
mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins.
NOTICE: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not
covered by your warranty.
NOTICE: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull-tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs; if
you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly
aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.
NOTICE: To avoid damaging the computer, perform the following steps before you begin working inside the computer.
NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device.


4. During installation or removal of any hardware, always ensure all data is backed up properly.

5. Disconnect any external peripherals and cable.

6. Disconnect all telephone or network cables from the computer.

7. Press and eject any installed cards from the ExpressCard slot and the 8-in--1 memory card reader.

8. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

9. Turn the computer over.

10. Slide the battery release latch to the side.

11. Slide the battery out of the battery bay.

12. Press the power button to ground the system board.

NOTICE: To avoid damage to the computer, use only the battery designed for this particular Dell computer. Do not use batteries designed for other Dell

Flashing the BIOS

Flashing the BIOS From a CD
Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive
If a BIOS-update program CD is provided with the new system board, flash the BIOS from the CD. If you do not have a BIOS-update program CD, flash the
BIOS from the hard drive.
Flashing the BIOS From a CD

1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly.

2. Insert the BIOS-update program CD, and restart the computer.
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS. When the flash update is complete, the
computer will automatically reboot.

3. Press <F2> during POST to enter the system setup program.

4. Press <Alt> and <F> to reset the computer defaults.

5. Press <Esc>, select Save changes and reboot, and press <Enter> to save configuration changes.

6. Remove the flash BIOS-update program CD from the drive and restart the computer.
Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive

1. Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in, the main battery is properly installed, and a network cable is attached.

2. Turn on the computer.

3. Locate the latest BIOS update file for your computer at support.dell.com.

4. Click Download Now to download the file.

5. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click Yes, I Accept this Agreement.
The File Download window appears.

6. Click Save this program to disk and then click OK.
The Save In window appears.

7. Click the down arrow to view the Save In menu, select Desktop, and then click Save.
The file downloads to your desktop.

8. Click Close if the Download Complete window appears.
The file icon appears on your desktop and is titled the same as the downloaded BIOS update file.

9. Double-click the file icon on the desktop and follow the instructions on the screen.


Removing the Camera

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Follow the instructions in Removing the Display Assembly.

3. Remove the display bezel (see Display Bezel).

4. Remove the two screws securing the camera board.

5. Release the securing tabs and disconnect the camera cable from the camera board connector.

6. Remove the camera board.
Replacing the Camera

1. Align the camera board over the screw holes.

2. Replace the two screws that secure the camera board to the display cover.

3. Connect the camera cable to the connector on the camera board.

4. Replace the display bezel (see Replacing the Display Bezel).

5. Follow the instructions in Replacing the Display Assembly.

Removing the Center Control Cover

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Turn the computer over and remove the four screws in the battery bay.

3. Turn the computer top side up, and open the display as far as it will open.

4. Ease the center control cover up with a plastic scribe from the back of the computer.

5. Ease the center control cover up until you see the media control buttons cable that attaches the center control cover to the system board.

6. Release the connector latch that secures the cable to the connector on the center control cover and remove the cable.

7. Lift the center control cover off the computer.

as a connector on the back of the computer).

NOTICE: Be extremely careful when removing the center control cover. The cover along with the cable that attaches it to the system board are very
fragile.

Replacing the Center Control Cover

1. Slide the media control buttons cable into the connector on the center control cover until it is in position and pull down on the connector latch that
secures the cable to the connector.

2. Align the hooks beneath the center control cover and snap the cover in place.

3. Turn the computer over and replace the four screws that secure the center control cover to the computer base.

4. Slide the battery into the bay until it clicks into place.

Removing the Coin-Cell Battery

1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

2. Turn the computer over and remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).

3. Remove the center control cover (see Removing the Center Control Cover).

4. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard").

5. Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest").

6. Disconnect the coin-cell battery cable from the connector on the system board.

7. Remove the coin-cell battery.
Replacing the Coin-Cell Battery

1. Replace the coin-cell battery and connect the coin-cell battery cable to the connector on the system board.

2. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest).

3. Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard).

4. Replace the center control cover (see Replacing the Center Control Cover).

5. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).

6. Slide the battery into the bay until it clicks into place.

Removing the Processor
Installing the Processor

Removing the Processor

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Turn the computer over and remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).

3. Remove the fan (see Removing the Fan).

4. Remove the processor heat sink (see Removing the Processor Heat Sink).

5. Using a flathead screwdriver, rotate the processor release latch counterclockwise to release the processor from the processor socket.

6. Use a processor extraction tool to remove the processor.
Installing the Processor

1. Align the pin-1 corner of the processor so that it points to the triangle on the ZIF socket, and insert the processor into the ZIF socket.
CAUTION: Before working inside your computer, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer.
NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such
as a connector on the back of the computer).
NOTICE: To prevent intermittent contact between the ZIF-socket cam screw and the processor when removing or replacing the processor, press to
apply slight pressure to the center of the processor while turning the cam screw.
NOTICE: To avoid damage to the processor, hold the screwdriver so that it is perpendicular to the processor when turning the cam screw.
NOTICE: When removing the processor, pull it straight up. Be careful not to bend the pins on the processor.

NOTICE: Ensure that the cam lock is in the fully open position before seating the processor. Seating the processor properly in the ZIF socket does not
require force.
NOTICE: A processor that is not properly seated can result in an intermittent connection or permanent damage to the processor and ZIF socket.

When the processor is correctly seated, all four corners are aligned at the same height. If one or more corners of the processor are higher than the
others, the processor is not seated correctly.

2. Tighten the ZIF socket by turning the cam screw clockwise to secure the processor to the system board.

3. Peel the backing off the thermal cooling pad and adhere the pad to the portion of the processor heat sink that covers the processor.

4. Replace the processor heat sink (see Replacing the Processor Heat Sink).

5. Replace the fan (Replacing the Fan).

6. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).

7. Slide the battery into the bay until it clicks into place.

8. Update the BIOS using a flash BIOS-update program CD. See (Flashing the BIOS).

Removing the Processor Heat Sink

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Turn the computer over and remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).

3. Remove the fan (see Removing the Fan).

4. Loosen the five captive screws that secure the processor heat sink to the system board.

5. Lift the processor heat sink off the computer.
Replacing the Processor Heat Sink


1. Peel the backing off the thermal cooling pad and adhere the pad to the portion of the heat sink that covers the processor.

2. Place the processor heat sink on the system board.

3. Tighten the five captive screws that secure the processor heat sink to the system board.

4. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).

5. Slide the battery into the bay until it clicks into place.

NOTE: The original pad can be reused if the original processor and heat sink are reinstalled together. If either the processor or heat sink is replaced,
use the thermal pad provided in the kit to ensure that thermal conductivity is achieved.
NOTE: This procedure assumes that you have already removed the processor heat sink and are ready to replace it.

Display Assembly

Removing the Display Assembly

1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

2. Remove the center control cover (see Removing the Center Control Cover).

3. Remove the base cover (see Removing the Base Cover).

4. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).

5. Remove the palm rest (see Removing the Palm Rest).

6. Remove the optical drive (see Removing the Optical Drive).

7. Remove the two screws from the computer base.

8. Make note of the routing guides and remove the antenna cables.

9. Remove the screw that secures the display cable and disconnect the cable from the system board connector.

10. Disconnect the camera cable (optional) and the power button cable.

11. Remove the two screws (one on each hinge).

12. Remove the display assembly.

Replacing the Display Assembly

1. Place the display assembly in position and replace the two screws.

2. Route the camera cable (optional), power button cable, and display cable through the routing guides and connect the cables to the respective system
board connectors.

3. Replace the screw that secures the display cable.

4. Route the Mini-Card antenna cables through the routing guides.

5. Replace the two screws at the base of the computer.

6. Replace the optical drive (see Replacing the Optical Drive).

7. Replace the palm rest (see Replacing the Palm Rest).

8. Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard).

9. Replace the center control cover (see Replacing the Center Control Cover).

10. Replace the base cover (see Replacing the Base Cover).

11. Slide the battery into the bay until it clicks into place.
Display Bezel

Removing the Display Bezel

1. Follow the instructions in Removing the Display Assembly.

2. Using your fingertips, carefully pry up the inside edge of the display bezel.

3. Remove the display bezel.

Replacing the Display Bezel

1. Align the display bezel over the display panel, and gently snap the bezel into place.

2. Follow the instructions in Replacing the Display Assembly.
Display Panel

Removing the Display Panel

1. Follow the instructions in Removing the Display Assembly.

2. Remove the display bezel (see Removing the Display Bezel).

3. Remove the four screws securing the display panel.

4. Remove the two screws securing the inverter board.
NOTICE: The display bezel is extremely fragile. Be careful when removing it to prevent damaging the bezel.

5. Remove the inverter board (see Removing the Inverter Board).

6. Remove the display panel assembly.

7. Remove the eight screws (four on either side)securing the display bracket.

Replacing the Display Panel

1. Attach the display brackets to the display panel by replacing the eight screws (four on either side).

2. Replace the inverter board (see Replacing the Inverter Board).

3. Align the display panel assembly and the inverter board with the display cover.

4. Replace the four screws securing the display panel assembly to the display cover.

5. Replace the two screws securing the inverter board to the display cover.

6. Replace the display bezel (see Replacing the Display Bezel).

7. Follow the instructions in Replacing the Display Assembly.
Display Panel Cable

Removing the Display Panel Cable

1. Follow the instructions in Removing the Display Assembly.


2. Remove the display bezel (see Removing the Display Bezel).

3. Remove the display panel (see Removing the Display Panel).

4. Turn the display panel over and place it on a clean surface.

5. Press the securing clips on either side and disconnect the display cable from the connector on top.

Replacing the Display Panel Cable

1. Connect the display cable to the connector on top.

2. Replace the display panel (see Replacing the Display Panel).

3. Replace the display bezel (see Replacing the Display Bezel).

4. Follow the instructions in Replacing the Display Assembly.
Inverter Board

Removing the Inverter Board

1. Follow the instructions in Removing the Display Assembly.

2. Remove the display bezel (see Removing the Display Bezel).

3. Remove the display panel (see Removing the Display Panel).

4. Turn the display panel and disconnect the cables from the connectors on either side of the inverter board.

5. Lift the inverter board off the display panel.
