Safety Caution and Warnings
Use the following safety guidelines to ensure your own personal safety and to help protect
your server, storage system, or appliance from potential damage. For complete safety,
regulatory, and warranty information, refer to your system’s System Information document.
Precautions for Rack-Mountable Products
Observe the following precautions for rack stability and safety. Also refer to the rack
installation documentation accompanying the system and the rack for specific warning
and/or caution statements and procedures.
Servers, storage systems, and appliances are considered to be components in a rack. Thus,
“component” refers to any server, storage system, or appliance, as well as to various
peripherals or supporting hardware.
WARNING: Installing Dell system components in a Dell rack without the front
and side stabilizers installed could cause the rack to tip over, potentially
resulting in bodily injury under certain circumstances. Therefore, always install
the stabilizers before installing components in the rack.
WARNING: After installing system/components in a rack, never pull more than
one component out of the rack on its slide assemblies at one time. The weight of
more than one extended component could cause the rack to tip over and injure
someone.
NOTE: Dell’s servers, storage systems, and appliances are certified as components for use in
Dell’s rack cabinet using the Dell customer rack kit. The final installation of Dell systems and
rack kits in any other brand of rack cabinet has not been approved by any safety agencies. It is
the customer’s responsibility to have the final combination of Dell systems and rack kits for use
in other brands of rack cabinets evaluated for suitability by a certified safety agency.
• System rack kits are intended to be installed in a Dell rack by trained service
technicians. If you install the kit in any other rack, be sure that the rack meets the
specifications of a Dell rack.
• Do not move large racks by yourself. Due to the height and weight of the rack, Dell
recommends a minimum of two people to accomplish this task.
• Before working on the rack, make sure that the stabilizers are secured to the rack,
extend to the floor, and that the full weight of the rack rests on the floor. Install front
and side stabilizers on a single rack or front stabilizers for joined multiple racks before
working on the rack.

• Always load the rack from the bottom up, and load the heaviest item in the rack first.
• Make sure that the rack is level and stable before extending a component from
the rack.
• Use caution when pressing the component rail release latches and sliding a component
into or out of a rack; the slide rails can pinch your fingers.
• After a component is inserted into the rack, carefully extend the rail into a locking
position, and then slide the component into the rack.
• Do not overload the AC supply branch circuit that provides power to the rack. The
total rack load should not exceed 80 percent of the branch circuit rating.
• Ensure that proper airflow is provided to components in the rack.
• Do not step on or stand on any system/component when servicing other
systems/components in a rack.

Rack Installation Guide
This installation guide provides instructions for trained service technicians to install one or
more Dell™ systems in a Dell four-post rack cabinet. All Dell four-post rack cabinets are
accommodated. One rack kit is required for each system to be installed in the rack cabinet.
Before attempting this installation, you should read this entire document carefully.
Rack Kit Contents
The rack kit includes the following items (see Figure 1-1):
• One pair of slide assemblies with mounting brackets
• One cable-management arm
• Three 6-32 x 0.25-inch pan-head hex-head taptite screws
• Two 6-32 x.0.25 flat-head Phillips screws
•Onecabletray
• One rack template
NOTE: The number of parts may vary for rack kits preinstalled by Dell.
NOTE: If you have purchased a Dell rack cabinet with your system, some of the hardware may
be preinstalled in the rack.
NOTE: The nonmetric screws described in illustrations and procedural steps are identified by
size and the number of threads per inch. For example, a #10 Phillips-head screw with
32 threads per inch is identified as a 10-32 screw.

Rack Requirements
The rack kit is designed for use in a Dell rack with an extended-depth back door. If you
have a Dell rack cabinet with a white finish, check that the back door does not contain
flush-mounted glass. If it does, you will need to order a new rack door from Dell before
installing your new system in the rack.
NOTICE: This rack kit is intended to be installed in a Dell rack by trained service technicians.
If you install the kit in any other rack, be sure that the rack meets the specifications of American
National Standards Institute (ANSI)/Electronic Industries Association (EIA) standard
ANSI/EIA-310-D-92, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 297, and Deutsche
Industrie Norm (DIN) 41494. One rack kit is required for each system that is installed in a rack.

Before You Begin
Refer to the safety instructions at the front of this document, as well as the safety
instructions provided in your system’s System Information document, for additional
information.
CAUTION: When installing multiple systems in a rack, complete all of the
procedures for the current system before attempting to install the next system.
NOTE: If you purchased a Dell rack cabinet along with your system, the slide assemblies may be
preinstalled in the rack.
NOTE: For instructions on installing the system itself, see “Installing a System in the Rack,”
found later in this document.
Important Safety Information
Observe the safety precautions in the following subsections when installing your system in
the rack.
WARNING: You must strictly follow the procedures in this document to protect
yourself as well as others who may be involved. This system is extremely heavy
and bulky (weighing up to 72.6 kilograms [160 pounds]), and proper preparation
and planning are important to prevent injury to yourself and to others. This
becomes increasingly important when systems are installed high up in the rack.
Kit Installation Restrictions
CAUTION: Dell systems are certified as components for use in Dell rack cabinets
using Dell rack kits. The final installation of Dell systems and rack kits in any
other brand of rack cabinet has not been approved by any safety agencies. It is
the customer's responsibility to have the final combination of Dell systems and
rack kits for use in other brands of rack cabinets evaluated for suitability by a
certified safety agency.
This rack kit is intended to be installed in a Dell rack by trained service technicians. If you
install the kit in any other rack, be sure that the rack meets the specifications of the Dell
rack.
Rack Stabilizer Feet
CAUTION: Installing systems in a Dell rack without the front and side stabilizer
feet installed and anchored to the floor could cause the rack to tip over,
potentially resulting in bodily injury under certain circumstances. Therefore,
always install and anchor the stabilizer feet before installing components in the
rack.

CAUTION: After installing systems in a rack, never pull more than one system
out of the rack on its slide assemblies at one time. The weight of more than one
extended system could cause the rack to tip over and cause injury.
The stabilizer feet help prevent the rack from tipping over when a system or other
component is pulled out of the rack with the slide assemblies fully extended. Refer to the
documentation provided with the rack cabinet for instructions on installing and anchoring
the stabilizer feet.
Recommended Tools and Supplies
To install the rack kit components, you need the following tools:
• A #2 Phillips-head screwdriver
• Installation template (provided with kit)
• Mechanical lifting platform (optional)
• Masking tape or a felt-tip pen (for use in marking the mounting holes)
Installation Tasks
Installing the rack kit and the system into a rack cabinet involves the following tasks:
• Removing the rack doors
•Markingtherack
• Installing the slide assemblies in the rack
• Installing the system in the rack
• Installing the cable tray
• Installing the cable management arm
• Replacing the rack doors

Removing the Doors From the Rack
You must remove the doors from the rack to provide access to the interior of the rack and to
prevent damage to the doors while installing the kit.
If you are installing the rack kit in a PowerEdge™ 4210 rack cabinet, see the procedures
contained in the Dell PowerEdge 4210 Rack Installation Guide.
For other Dell rack cabinets, see the documentation provided with the rack for instructions
on removing rack doors.
Marking the Rack
NOTE: If the slide assemblies were preinstalled by Dell, skip this section.
You must allow 7 units (U), or 31.1 centimeters (cm [12.25 inches]) of vertical space for
each system you install in the rack.
1Determine where you want to install the system in the rack. For more information on
configuring a Dell rack, refer to the Dell Rack Advisor software available on the Dell
Web site at http://www.dell.com.
CAUTION: If you are installing more than one system, install the first system in
the lowest possible position in the rack.
If you intend to install more than one system in the rack, you must install the slide
assemblies so that 7 U (31.1 cm or 12.25 inches) of vertical space are between the top
of one slide assembly and the top of the next. In the Dell rack, the rails of the rack are
marked either by small indentations in 1-U (4.44 cm or 1.75-inch) increments (see
Figure 1-2) or, as in the PowerEdge 4210 rack, by numbered 1-U markings on both the
outer and inner surfaces of the front and back vertical rails.

2Place the front of the template on the front vertical rails where you want to install the
system, and align the bottom of the template with the desired bottom position of the
system.
Ensure that the printing on the template identifies the side facing outward as the
template front.
3Mark the front vertical rails with a felt-tipped marker or place masking tape where the
system’s upper and lower edges will be located (see Figure 1-3) and on the vertical rails
next to the template’s V-shaped notches that are marked in red.

4At the back of the rack cabinet, repeat steps 2 and 3 to mark the back rail, ensuring
that the printing on the template identifies the side facing outward as the template
back.

1Slide the back mounting flange toward the center of the slide assembly to slightly
reduce the slide assembly's overall length (see Figure 1-4).

2The mounting flange on each end of the slide assembly has two hooks that fit through
holes in the vertical rail. Position the slide assembly mounting flange against the inner
side of the rack's front vertical rail so that the uppermost hook is in the topmost hole
and just below the top of the system position you marked on the rack.
3Press the front mounting flange against the inside surface of the front rail, and press
down. The mounting hooks move down, and the square latching tab pops into the
square hole just below the upper mounting hook.
4Slide the back mounting flange backward to increase the slide assembly's length until
the back mounting flange fits snugly against the inner side of the back vertical rail.
5Press the back mounting flange against the inside surface of the back rail, and press
down. The mounting hooks move down, and the square tab pops into the square hole
just below the upper mounting hook.
6Repeat steps 1 through 5 to install the second slide assembly.
Installing a System in the Rack
The subsections that follow provide instructions for installing a system in the rack.
Installing the System
CAUTION: If you are installing more than one system, install the first system in
the lowest available position in the rack. Complete the installation of the first
system in the rack before starting the second. Never pull more than one system
out of the rack at a time.
WARNING: Installing multiple systems in a rack will require up to four people
and may require a sturdy, elevated platform to stand on. A mechanical lifting
platform or similar equipment of the proper capacity may also be useful. If you
attempt to lift the system without enough people to safely perform the task, you
risk personal injury to yourself and to others and damage to the system.
1Pull the two interior slides out of the rack until they lock in the fully extended position
(see Figure 1-5).

CAUTION: Due to the weight and size of the system, never attempt to install the
system in the slide assemblies by yourself. Even with some internal components
removed, the system may require four people to lift it into position and install it
on the extended slide assemblies. Always use the chassis handles when lifting the
system.
2To make the system easier to lift, remove and label the hard-disk drives, and remove
the power supplies and fans. For instructions on removing system components, see the
system’s Installation and Troubleshooting Guide.
3Using two to four people, lift the system into position in front of the extended slides.
The shoulder studs on the side of the chassis must enter the inner slots of the interior
slides (see Figure 1-5). You can install the system on the slides two ways:
•Fromthefront of the extended slide assemblies, align the shoulder studs with the
inner slots in the interior slides and push the system into the slide assemblies until
all three shoulder studs have entered the interior slides and the yellow chassis
release lever locks the system in place.
• Position the system so that the center and back shoulder studs on each side are
directly above the openings in the interior slides. Lower the system into the rack
and push the system into the slide assemblies until the front shoulder screw on
each side enters the interior slides and the yellow chassis release lever locks the
system in place.
4Reinstall any components you removed from the system to make it lighter.
5Press in on the flat slide release latch and push the system completely into the rack
(see Figure 1-5).
6Tighten the two thumbscrews on the front panel to secure the system to the rack.
Installing the Cable Tray
1Attach the cable tray to the back of the system by inserting the two slots on each end
of the tray onto the corresponding tabs in the back of the chassis.
2Use three 6-32 x 0.25-inch hex-head taptite screws to secure the bottom lip of the tray
to holes just beneath the expansion card area.
3Secure the side of the chassis to the cable tray with two 6-32 x 0.25-inch flat-head
Phillips screws on each side of the chassis (see Figure 1-6).
CAUTION: Do not grasp the cable tray when lifting the system. The cable tray
and its mounting are not sturdy enough to support the weight of the system. Lift
the system by the chassis handles only.
