This document describes how to upgrade your Dell™ PowerVault™ 530F system software
from version 1.2xor 1.32 to version 1.35. The system software includes the PowerVault 530F
internal code and any application and customization that Dell performs.
Before You Begin
Before beginning the software upgrade procedure, ensure that you have the following items:
•PowerVault 530F Recovery CD version 1.35.
• Two blank, formatted diskettes for each PowerVault 530F to back up the configuration
settings.
• If possible, connect a keyboard and monitor to the PowerVault 530F when performing
the following procedures.
Backing Up the Configuration Information
1Download the file named bnr1_1.exe from the file download library at
http://support.dell.com to the system used to manage the PowerVault 530F.
2After downloading the self-extracting bnr1_1.exe file, expand the file contents to a
subdirectory of your choice.
3Use the dumpall.exe utility in this directory to create a text file containing the
PowerVault 530F configuration information:
aRun the dumpall.exe utility by typing the following syntax:
dumpall nodename filename
where nodename is the PowerVault 530F node name and filename is an output
file name of your choice. For example, to capture the dumpall.exe output in a file
named pri.txt from a system with a node name of 530F-PRI, type:
dumpall 530f-pri pri.txt
The system creates a file named pri.txt in the same subdirectory as the
dumpall.exe utility.

bIf the PowerVault 530F is part of a redundant pair, run the dumpall.exe utility
again, specifying the failover node.
Compare the two text files generated by the dumpall.exe utility for both
PowerVault530F nodes. In the logical unit number (LUN) section, compare the
LUN numbering and the Max Block Size parameters for each LUN to confirm that
the configuration information for the two nodes is identical.
NOTICE: If the LUN configuration values for the two nodes are different, you must
contact Dell for technical assistance to correct your system configuration and
successfully upgrade your system software.
4Check and record the software version number for the PowerVault 530F:
aAccess the SAN Appliance Menu from an attached keyboard/video/mouse or from
a virtual network computing (VNC) remote control client.
See the Dell PowerVault 530F System Administrator’s Guide for information about
setting up a VNC remote control client.
bRecord the version number displayed in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
5Record the low-level configuration information:
aFrom the main menu, click System Settings—>Network Properties, and record
the Computer Name.
bClick the Protocols tab, and then click Properties.
Record the Internet protocol (IP) address and subnet mask for both adapters
listed in the Adapters dialog box. (Click the down arrow on the right end of the
Adapters box to select the Gigabit Ethernet adapter.)
cIf you have PowerVault 650F storage systems attached to the PowerVault 530F,
click Applications—>Data Agent, and record the information displayed in the
Privileged Users section.
6If you are using software version 1.32 and your storage area network (SAN)
configuration uses IP mirrors, perform the following steps to upgrade the PowerVault
530F backup-and-restore utility program. (This upgrade adds the capability to back up
and restore IP mirror configuration data.)
NOTICE: Do not perform this step for software version 1.2 x . The backup utility patch
is not backward-compatible and can damage the configuration information for older
versions of the system software.
aFrom the system used to manage the PowerVault 530F, open the directory that you
extracted the dumpall.exe utility and other files to in step 1.
bFollow the instructions in the readme.txt file to install the backup utility patch.

7Back up the configuration information to diskette:
aAccess the SAN Appliance Menu from an attached keyboard/video/mouse.
bFrom the PowerVault 530F main menu, select Tools—> Backup Configuration,
and follow the prompts on the screen to create a configuration backup diskette.
cRepeat steps a and b to create a second backup diskette, in case a problem occurs
with the first diskette.
8Repeat steps 1 through 7 to back up the configuration information for each
PowerVault 530F node.
9Ensure that all data for all LUNs has been properly backed up.
10 Terminate all input/output (I/O) activity involving all PowerVault 530F nodes.
If the host systems are not Microsoft®Cluster Server (MSCS) nodes, shut down the
host system. If the host systems are MSCS nodes, disable the Cluster Disk Resource in
Device Manager and set the Cluster Service option to Disabled in the Services applet.
• For systems running Microsoft Windows®2000, click Device Manager—>
View—> Show hidden devices. Double-click Non-Plug and Play Drivers. Right-
click Cluster Disk Driver and click Disabled.
• For systems running Microsoft Windows NT®4.0, click the Start button, point to
Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click the Devices icon and select
the Cluster Disk entry, and then change the Startup setting to Disabled.
11 Shut down and turn off all host nodes.
Upgrading the Systems Software From Version
1.2 x to Version 1.35
If your PowerVault 530F systems use software version 1.22 or 1.24, perform the following
steps:
1Before proceeding, ensure that you have backed up the configuration information for
each PowerVault 530F onto diskettes, as discussed in step 5 of "Backing Up the
Configuration Information."

2If you use IP mirrors, perform the following steps to record the IP mirror information.
NOTE: Ensure that you record the configuration information for all IP mirrors.
aFrom the system used to manage the PowerVault 530F, launch the Web browser
and log into the PowerVault 530F.
bClick the Node Conf tab and record the local mirror net, mirror node, and remote
mirror net information.
cClick the IP Mirror tab and record the mirror type and local LUN to remote LUN
information.
dFrom the local LUN area on the lower-left portion of the screen, select the
mirrored LUN.
eConfirm that the Disconnect option is selected, and click Commit.
fClick the Node Conf tab, click Mirror Node, and then select None.
gClick Set adjacent to the Remote Mirror Net option.
3Insert the Dell PowerVault 530F Recovery CD into the CD drive on the PowerVault
530F and reboot the system.
The system reboots from the CD and upgrades the system software. The system emits
a single beep when all software has been installed, and you can safely reboot the
system. If a monitor is connected to the PowerVault 530F, the system also issues a
prompt when you can reboot the system.
After manually rebooting the system, wait for the system to complete an additional,
automatic reboot before continuing.
4Repeat steps 2 and 3 for any additional PowerVault 530F systems.
5If you do not have a keyboard and monitor attached to the PowerVault 530F and you
are using VNC to complete the remaining configuration changes, you must
temporarily change the network settings on the system you are using for VNC access.
After loading the Dell PowerVault 530F Recovery CD, the default network name is
changed to PV530F, the default IP address is 10.77.77.77, and the subnet mask is
255.255.255.0. For information about setting up the VNC connection, see "Getting
Started" in the PowerVault 530F System Administrator’s Guide.
6To perform a low-level configuration, perform the following steps:
aAccess the SAN Appliance Menu from an attached keyboard/video/mouse or a
VNC connection.
bFrom the main menu, click Applications—> Data Agent.

cClick the Devices menu item, and then click Auto Detect.
The Data Agent automatically detects any attached PowerVault 650F storage
systems.
dIn the Privileged Users section, enter the information you recorded in "Backing
Up the Configuration Information," found earlier in this document.
eClick File/Save, and then click Yes to restart the Data Agent.
fFrom the PowerVault 530F main menu, click System Settings, and then click
Network Properties.
gClick the Change box, enter the name for this PowerVault 530F in the Computer
Name field, and then click OK to save the settings.
hClick the Protocols tab, and then click Properties.
iEnter the previously recorded IP address and subnet mask for both adapters.
(Click the down arrow on the right end of the Adapters box to select the Gigabit
Ethernet adapter).
jWhen complete, allow the system to shut down and restart.
7To restore the configuration files from the backup diskette, perform the following
steps:
aFrom the SAN Appliance Menu, select Tool s, and then click Restore
Configuration.
bFollow the prompts on the screen to restore the configuration backup.
cWhen the restore has completed, remove the backup diskette and reboot the
PowerVault 530F.
8From the system used to manage the PowerVault 530F, launch the Web browser and
log into the PowerVault 530F.
9Click the Node Conf tab and restore the local mirror net, mirror node, and remote
mirror net information.
10 Click the IP Mirror tab and restore the mirror type and local LUN to remote LUN
information.
11 Repeat steps 5 through 10 to restore the configuration information for any additional
PowerVault 530F systems.
12 See "Verifying the System Operation," found later in this document, to confirm that
the restored configuration settings are correct.

Upgrading the Systems Software From Version
1.32 to Version 1.35
If your PowerVault 530F systems use software version 1.32, perform the following steps to
upgrade the system software:
1Before proceeding, ensure that you have backed up the configuration information for
each PowerVault 530F onto diskettes, as discussed in step 5 of "Backing Up the
Configuration Information," found earlier in this document.
2If you have PowerVault 660F storage systems attached to the PowerVault 530F,
perform the following steps to record information about the primary and failover
paths:
aAccess the SAN Appliance Menu from an attached keyboard/video/mouse or a
VNC session.
bFrom the main menu, click Applications—> QLogic Config Utility.
cFrom the QL-Config menu, click Connect.
When connected, click Machine Configuration.
dRecord the primary and failover paths displayed in the Device & LUN
Configuration screen.
eRepeat steps a through d for all PowerVault 530F systems connected to a
PowerVault 660F storage system.
3To upgrade to version 1.35, insert the Dell PowerVault 530F Recovery CD into the CD
drive on the PowerVault 530F and reboot the system.
The system reboots from the CD drive and upgrades the system and application
software. The system emits a single beep when all software has been installed and you
can safely reboot the system. If a monitor is connected to the PowerVault 530F, the
system also issues a prompt when you can reboot the system.
After manually rebooting the system, wait for the system to complete an additional,
automatic reboot before continuing.
4Repeat step 3 to upgrade the software for any additional PowerVault 530F units.
5If you do not have a keyboard and monitor attached to the PowerVault 530F and you
are using VNC to complete the remaining configuration changes, you must
temporarily change the network settings on the system you are using for VNC access.
After loading the Dell PowerVault 530F Recovery CD, the default network name is

Started" in the PowerVault 530F System Administrator’s Guide.
6If you have PowerVault 660F storage systems attached to a PowerVault 530F, perform
the following steps to restore the primary and failover path information:
aAccess the SAN Appliance Menu from an attached keyboard/video/mouse or a
VNC connection.
bFrom the main menu, click Applications—> QLogic Config Utility.
cFrom the QL-Config menu, click Connect.
dWhen connected, click Machine Configuration.
eRestore the primary and failover paths you recorded in step 2. (Right-click a path
entry to select its role.)
7If you have PowerVault 650F storage units attached to a PowerVault 530F, perform the
following steps to perform a low-level configuration:
aAccess the SAN Appliance Menu from an attached keyboard/video/mouse.
bFrom the main menu, click Applications—> Data Agent.
cClick the Devices menu item, and then click Auto Detect.
The Data Agent automatically detects any attached PowerVault 650F storage
units.
dIn the Privileged Users section, enter the previously recorded Privileged Users
information.
eClick File/Save to save the configuration, and then click Yes to restart the Data
Agent.
fFrom the PowerVault 530F main menu, click System Settings—> Network
Properties.
gClick the Change box, enter the Computer Name for this PowerVault 530F, and
click OK to save.
hClick the Protocols tab, and then click Properties.
iEnter the previously recorded IP address and subnet mask for both adapters.
(Click the down arrow on the right end of the Adapters box to select the Gigabit
Ethernet adapter.)
jWhen complete, the system shuts down and restarts.

8To restore the configuration files from the backup diskette, perform the following
steps:
aAccess the SAN Appliance Menu from an attached keyboard/video/mouse.
bFrom the SAN Appliance Menu, select Tools, and then click Restore
Configuration.
cFollow the prompts on the screen to restore the configuration backup.
dWhen the restore has completed, remove the backup diskette and reboot the
PowerVault 530F.
9Repeat steps 5 through 8 to restore the configuration information for any additional
PowerVault 530F systems.
10 See "Verifying the System Operation" to confirm that the restored configuration
settings are correct.
Verifying the System Operation
After upgrading the PowerVault 530F software and restoring the configuration information,
perform the following steps.
NOTICE: If any of the following steps do not yield expected results, troubleshoot each
problem individually. For troubleshooting information, see your system’s
User’s Guide ,
Service Manual , and System Administrator’s Guide for more information.
1From the system used to manage the PowerVault 530F, launch the Web browser and
log into the PowerVault 530F.
2Click the Node Conf tab and verify that the system properly restored the original
configuration information.
3Click the LUN Map tab and verify that the LUN-to-host mapping was restored.
4Turn on all attached servers.
5If your servers are MSCS nodes, enable the Cluster Disk Resource in Device Manager
and set the Cluster Service option to Automatic in the Services applet, and then
reboot the MSCS nodes.
6Check all servers for proper access to previously mapped LUNs.
7Verify that all Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) and IP mirrors are synchronized.

8After you verify that all servers are accessing storage, back up the final configuration
information to diskette:
aAccess the SAN Appliance Menu from an attached keyboard/video/mouse or a
VNC connection.
bFrom the PowerVault 530F main menu, select Tools, and then click Backup
Configuration.
cFollow the prompts on the screen to create an up-to-date configuration backup
diskette.
9Repeat step 8 to back up all PowerVault 530F nodes.
The software upgrade is now complete.
