Introduction
This document provides specific procedures for upgrading the firmware to the Dell EMC Networking
N3024ET-ON/N3024EP-ON/N3024EF-ON/N3048ET-ON/N3048EP-ON switches to firmware version 6.5.3.36 or
later.
IMPORTANT: Dell EMC Networking N3048EP-ON switches support firmware
version 6.5.1.1/6.5.1.31 and later.
IMPORTANT: Dell EMC Networking N3024ET-ON/N3024EP-ON/N3024EF-ON/
N3048ET-ON switches support firmware version 6.5.2.5/6.5.2.35 and later.
It is recommended that this document be thoroughly reviewed prior to installing or upgrading of this product.

Firmware Upgrade Overview
Administrators must have access to the CLI via telnet, SSH or the serial port to perform the upgrade procedure.
IMPORTANT: Dell EMC Networking N3000E-ON switches support two versions of
latest firmware – Advanced Version and Advanced-Lite Version. The image file for
Advanced Version is N3000Advv6.5.3.36.stk and Advanced-Lite Version is
N3000AdvLitev6.5.3.6.stk. The firmware image version 6.5.3.36 supports full stack
capability of up to 12 units with maximum active VLAN support of 4093. The
firmware image version 6.5.3.6 supports reduced stack size of up to 8 units with
maximum active VLAN support of 1024. It’s required to use the Advanced-Lite
(N3000AdvLitev6.5.3.6.stk) version of firmware image to form the mixed stack of
N3000E-ON and N3000 Series switches. It’s required to use the Advanced Version
(N3000Advv6.5.3.36.stk) version of firmware image to form the mixed stack of
N3000E-ON and N3132PX-ON switches to support full stack capability of up to 12
units with maximum active VLAN support of 4093
Firmware Downgrade Overview
Downgrading from firmware 6.5.3.36 or 6.5.3.6 to an earlier 6.5.1.x release is not supported on Dell EMC
Networking N3000E-ON Series switches. Migration of switch configuration information form a later release to an
earlier release is NOT supported. It is strongly recommended that the current configuration be saved locally (i.e., not
on the switch) prior to downgrading the firmware. The existing configuration may or may not work with the earlier
version of firmware, therefore, it is always best to be physically present at the switch site and to be prepared to
access the switch over the serial port if necessary when downgrading firmware.

The procedure given below to download firmware to an individual switch or a stack of switches.
Please do not interrupt switch operation during the downloading process as this may result in corruption of
flash memory. Do not power off a switch undergoing the upgrade process unless specifically directed to do so
by the instructions.
An annotated download example is shown following this section.
1. Back up your configuration.
2. Upgrade using telnet or SSH require default enable authentication method or enable password in current
configuration. If not configured follow steps below to configure an enable password:

console(config)#enable password <password>
console(config)#exit
console#copy running-config startup-config
3. Download the 6.5.3.36 firmware image (N3000Advv6.5.3.36.stk) or 6.5.3.6 firmware image
(N3000AdvLitev6.5.3.6.stk) to the standalone-switch or stack master.
NOTE: Activate the image to use as the boot (active) image after the switch
resets. Images on the N3000E-ON switches are named active and backup.
4. Activate 6.5.3.36 (Advanced) or 6.5.3.6 (Advanced-Lite) firmware.
5. Reload the switch.
How to Access Serial Console Port on N3000E-ON switches
NOTE: How to access serial console of the N3000E-ON switch?
 Use a supplied “RJ45 Yost to DB9 serial cable” to access the serial console.
 Connect the RJ45 end of the cable to the RJ45 serial console port and the DB9 connector to your PC.
 Download and Install the terminal emulation software on your PC (for example, PuTTY) to access the
serial console with the correct settings (default setting 115200 baud, 8 data bits, no parity bit, 1 stop
bit, and no flow control).

This example shows an annotated upgrade example for a N3000E-ON switch to Advanced Version. This example
presumes the administrator is logged in to the switch via Serial console. You can also follow this upgrade procedure
via telnet or SSH after setting enable password if it is not set so.
1. Back up your configuration. The following commands copy the running-config to a TFTP server:

method is already configured).

6. After the switch has finished rebooting, log in and verify that the firmware has been updated to the 6.5.3.36
version using the show version command. A single switch will typically reboot in around two minutes. A
stack may take significantly longer to complete the upgrade process.

7. The switch or stack is now ready for normal operation. Verify the configuration and make any changes
needed prior to connecting the switch to the operational network.

Note on “copy” command from steps 2,3 and 4 in switch upgrade above:
 “copy” command will take longer to complete with a stack of switches. This is due to the master switch
copying the software to the member switches. The master switch will display the line “Distributing the
code to the members of the stack!” for several minutes until the copy is done.
 “copy” command will copy the software to all the switches as “backup” image

How to setup mixed stack of N3000E-ON with N3000 Series switches(Advanced-Lite)
Dell EMC Networking N3000E-ON switches can be mixed stack with N3000 Series switches of up to 8 units.
Mixed stack of N3000E-ON and N3000 Series supports only 1024 active VLANs configurable in the range 1-4093
and does not support MMRP/MVRP. Dell EMC Networking N3000E-ON switches has an expansion slot to install
optional stacking module with two mini-SAS stack ports. Dell EMC Networking N3000 Series switches are
available with two fixed mini-SAS stack ports.
Administrators setting up mixed stack of N3000E-ON and N3000 Standalone switches should follow the below
steps below:
1. Back up your configuration of N3000E-ON and N3000 Switches.
2. Upgrade using telnet or SSH require default enable authentication method or enable password in current
configuration. If not configured follow steps below to configure an enable password:
console#configure
console(config)#enable password <password>
console(config)#exit
console#copy running-config startup-config
3. Download the Advanced-Lite version of 6.5.3.6 firmware image (N3000AdvLitev6.5.3.6.stk) to N3000E-
ON and N3000 Series switches.
NOTE: Activate the image to use as the boot (active) image after the switch
resets. Images on the N3048EP-ONswitch is named as active and backup.
4. Activate 6.5.3.6 (Advanced-Lite) firmware on N3000E-ON and N3000 switches
5. Reload the switches.
6. After switch reloaded, download and activate the mixed-stack firmware image
(N3000N3100AdvLitev6.5.3.6.itb) on N3000E-ON and N3000 switches.
7. Reload the switches again.
8. Power OFF both N3000E-ON and N3000 Series switches. Plug-in mini-SAS stack cables and form the
stack between N3000E-ON and N3000 Series switches.
