Firebox front and screen become
very hot when running rebox.
Keep children and adults away
from hot surfaces to avoid burns
or clothing ignition. Firebox will
remain hot for a time after shut-
down. Allow surfaces to cool
before touching.
You must operate this replace
with the provided replace screen
(closed) and hood in place. Make
sure these parts are in place before
running rebox. This rebox has
been tested and approved with and
without the brick liner. If the liner
is removed, the model number re-
verts to the NL (non-lined) series.
Keep the rebox area clear and
free from combustible materials,
gasoline and other ammable
vapors and liquids.
1. This rebox shall not be installed in a
bedroom or bathroom.
2. Never install the rebox
• in a recreational vehicle
• where curtains, furniture, clothing or
other ammable objects are less than
36" from the front and 42" from the top of
rebox. For side clearances see Figure
6, page 8
• in high trafc areas
• in windy or drafty areas
3. Do not use this rebox as a wood-burning
replace. Use only decorative unvented
room heaters (log sets).
4. Do not add extra logs or ornaments such
as pine cones, vermiculite or rock wool.
Using these added items can cause
sooting.
5. Vent-free gas log heaters installed in these
reboxes require fresh air ventilation to
run properly. See Air for Combustion and
Ventilation, page 5.
6. Do not run rebox
• where ammable liquids or vapors are
used or stored
• under dusty conditions
7. Do not use this rebox to cook food or
burn paper or other objects.
8. Turn rebox off and let cool before servic-
ing. Only a qualied service person should
service and repair rebox.
9. Operating vent-free log sets in a rebox
above elevations of 4,500 feet could
cause pilot outage.
10. Do not use the rebox if it has been un-
der water due to the shock hazard that
could result with the blower accessary (if
installed) in place.
11. Provide adequate clearances around air
openings.

1. With utility knife, cut the carton all the way
around above the staples on the bottom
tray. Lift the carton off the rebox. Remove
packing. Note: The hood is located in the
packing on the right hand side of the heater
front. Lift the heater off the bottom tray.
2. Check carton contents for the following:

LOCATING FIREBOX
Plan where you will install the rebox. This will
save time and money later when you install
the rebox. Before installation, consider the
following:
1. Where rebox will be located. Allow for
wall and ceiling clearances (see Installa-
tion Clearances, page 8).
AIR FOR COMBUSTION AND VENTILATION
WARNING: This heater shall
not be installed in a room or space
unless the required volume of in-
door combustion air is provided
by the method described in the
National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI
Z223.1/NFPA54, the International
Fuel Gas Code, or applicable lo-
cal codes. Read the following in-
structions to insure proper fresh
air for this and other fuel-burning
appliances in your home.
Today’s homes are built more energy efcient
than ever. New materials, increased insulation and
new construction methods help reduce heat loss
in homes. Home owners weather strip and caulk
around windows and doors to keep the cold air out
and the warm air in. During heating months, home
owners want their homes as airtight as possible.
While it is good to make your home energy ef-
cient, your home needs to breathe. Fresh air must
enter your home. All fuel-burning appliances need
fresh air for proper combustion and ventilation.
Exhaust fans, reboxes, clothes dryers and fuel
burning appliances draw air from the house to
operate. You must provide adequate fresh air
for these appliances. This will insure proper
venting of vented fuel-burning appliances.
PROVIDING ADEQUATE VENTILATION
The following are excerpts from National
Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, Air
for Combustion and Ventilation.
All spaces in homes fall into one of the three
following ventilation classications:
1. Unusually Tight Construction
2. Unconned Space
3. Conned Space
The information on pages 5 through 7 will help
you classify your space and provide adequate
ventilation.
Unusually Tight Construction
The air that leaks around doors and windows
may provide enough fresh air for combustion
and ventilation. However, in buildings of un-
usually tight construction, you must provide
additional fresh air.
Unusually tight construction is dened as
construction where:
a. walls and ceilings exposed to the out-
side atmosphere have a continuous
water vapor retarder with a rating of one
perm (6x10-11 kg per pa-sec-m2) or less
with openings gasketed or sealed and
b. weather stripping has been added on
openable windows and doors and
c. caulking or sealants are applied to
areas such as joints around window
and door frames, between sole plates
and oors, between wall-ceiling joints,
between wall panels, at penetrations
for plumbing, electrical and gas lines
and at other openings.
If your home meets all of the three criteria
above, you must provide additional fresh air.
See Ventilation Air From Outdoors, page 7.
OPERATION
This rebox is designed for use with approved
ANSI Z21.1.2 decorative type unvented room
heaters. (Physical size limitations apply. Refer
to minimum rebox requirements supplied
with log heater.) It requires no outside vent-
ing or chimney making installation easy and
inexpensive. When used without the blower,
the rebox requires no electricity making it
ideal for emergency backup heat.
BLOWER ACCESSORY
The FB32CB rebox will accept the GA3750A
accessory. The variable blower allows you to
select the fan speed you desire. The blower
circulates heated air from the rebox into the
room. Use of blower is optional.

vious criteria, proceed to Determining Fresh-
Air Flow For Firebox Location, page 6.
Conned Space and Unconned Space
The National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1/
NFPA 54 denes a conned space as a space
whose volume is less than 50 cubic feet per
1,000 Btu/hr (4.8 m3 per kw) of the aggregate
input rating of all appliances installed in that
space and an unconned space as a space
whose volume is not less than 50 cubic feet per
1,000 Btu/hr (4.8 m3 per kw) of the aggregate
input rating of all appliances installed in that
space. Rooms communicating directly with the
space in which the appliances are installed*,
through openings not furnished with doors, are
considered a part of the unconned space.
* Adjoining rooms are communicating only if
there are doorless passageways or ventilation
grills between them.
DETERMINING FRESH-AIR FLOW
FOR HEATER LOCATION
Determining if You Have a Conned or
Unconned Space
Use this work sheet to determine if you have
a conned or unconned space.
Space: Includes the room in which you will
install heater plus any adjoining rooms with
doorless passageways or ventilation grills
between the rooms.
1. Determine the volume of the space (length
x width x height).
Length x Width x Height =__________ cu.
ft. (volume of space)
Example: Space size 20 ft. (length) x 16
ft. (width) x 8 ft. (ceiling height) = 2560 cu.
ft. (volume of space)
If additional ventilation to adjoining room
is supplied with grills or openings, add the
volume of these rooms to the total volume
of the space.
2. Multiply the space volume by 20 to deter-
mine the maximum Btu/Hr the space can
support.
_________(volume of space) x 20 = (Maxi-
mum Btu/Hr the space can support)
Example: 2560 cu. ft. (volume of space) x
20 = 51,200 (maximum Btu/Hr the space
can support)
3. Add the Btu/Hr of all fuel burning appli-
ances in the space.

can support with the actual amount of Btu/
Hr used.

The space in the above example is a conned
space because the actual Btu/Hr used is more
than the maximum Btu/Hr the space can sup-
port. You must provide additional fresh air.
Your options are as follows:
A. Rework worksheet, adding the space
of an adjoining room. If the extra space
provides an unconned space, remove
door to adjoining room or add ventilation
grills between rooms. See Ventilation Air
From Inside Building, page 7.
B. Vent room directly to the outdoors. See
Ventilation Air From Outdoors, page 7.
C. Install a lower Btu/Hr heater, if lower Btu/
Hr size makes room unconned.
If the actual Btu/Hr used is less than the
maximum Btu/Hr the space can support, the
space is an unconned space. You will need
no additional fresh air ventilation.

This fresh air would come from an adjoining
unconfined space. When ventilating to an
adjoining unconned space, you must provide
two permanent openings: one within 12" of the

ceiling and one within 12" of the oor on the
wall connecting the two spaces (see options 1
and 2, Figure 4). You can also remove door into
adjoining room (see option 3, Figure 4). Fol-
low the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1/
NFPA 54, Air for Combustion and Ventilation for
required size of ventilation grills or ducts.
Ventilation Air From Outdoors
Provide extra fresh air by using ventilation grills or
ducts. You must provide two permanent openings:
one within 12" of the ceiling and one within 12"
of the oor. Connect these items directly to the
outdoors or spaces open to the outdoors. These
spaces include attics and crawl spaces. Follow the
National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54,
Section 5.3, Air for Combustion and Ventilation for
required size of ventilation grills or ducts.
IMPORTANT: Do not provide openings for
inlet or outlet air into attic if attic has a thermo-
stat-controlled power vent. Heated air entering
the attic will activate the power vent.
INSTALLATION
NOTICE: This heater is intended
for use as supplemental heat.
Use this heater along with your
primary heating system. Do not
install this heater as your pri-
mary heat source. If you have a
central heating system, you may
run system’s circulating blower
while using heater. This will help
circulate the heat throughout the
house. In the event of a power
outage, you can use this heater
as your primary heat source.
WARNING: A qualied ser-
vice person must install rebox.
Follow all local codes.

IMPORTANT: Vent-free gas log heaters add
moisture to the air. Although this is benecial,
installing rebox in rooms without enough
ventilation air may cause mildew to form from
too much moisture. See Air for Combustion
and Ventilation, page 5.
IMPORTANT: Make sure the rebox is level. If
rebox is not level, log set will not work properly.
Note: Your Vanguard rebox is designed to
be used in zero clearance installations. Wall
or framing material can be placed directly
against any exterior surface on the rear, sides
or top of your rebox, except where standoff
spacers are integrally attached. If standoff
spacers are attached to your rebox, these
spacers can be placed directly against wall
or framing materials.
Use the dimensions shown for rough openings
to create the easiest installation (see Built-In
Firebox Installation, page 12).
INSTALLATION CLEARANCES
WARNING: Maintain the
minimum clearances. If you can,
provide greater clearances from
oor, ceiling and adjoining wall.
Carefully follow the instructions below. This
will ensure safe installation.
Minimum Clearances For Side Combus-
tible Material, Side Wall and Ceiling
A. Clearances from the side of the replace
cabinet to any combustible material and
wall should follow diagram in Figure 6.
Example: The face of a mantel, bookshelf,
etc. is made of combustible material and
protrudes 3 1/2" from the wall. This com-
bustible material must be 4" from the side
of the replace opening (see Figure 6).

opening to the ceiling should not be less
than 42".

Mantel Clearances for Built-In
Installation
If placing custom mantel above built-in re-
box, you must meet the minimum allowable
clearance between mantel shelf and top of
rebox opening shown in Figure 7. These are
the minimum allowable mantel clearances
for a safe installation. Use larger clearances
wherever possible to minimize the heating of
objects and materials placed on the mantel.
CAUTION: Close screens
before operation of vent-free
gas log heater. Do not allow the
heater to touch or extend beyond
the replace screen.
If your installation does not meet the minimum
clearances in Figure 7, you must:
• raise mantel to an acceptable height,
OR
• remove mantel.

INSTALLING BLOWER ACCESSORY
(Model FB32CB Only)
You may install blower accessory GA3750A
with conventional installation (below) or with
built-in installation (page 11).
Conventional Installation of Blower
Accessory
NOTICE: If a log set is currently
installed in the rebox, disconnect
log set from gas supply and remove
from rebox. Contact a qualied
service person to do this.
1. Remove rebox bottom:
a. Remove 4 screws that secure bottom
of rebox (see Figure 8).
b. Carefully raise and remove rebox bot-
tom from rebox.
WARNING: If there is a duplex
electrical outlet installed in the
right side of the bottom of the
replace base area, be sure that
the electrical power to the outlet is
turned off before proceeding with
blower installation. Failure to do
this may result in serious injury.
2. Place blower against lower rear wall of
rebox wrapper with exhaust port directed
upward. Align holes in top mounting tabs
of blower with holes in wall of wrapper
(see Figure 9). Using 2 screws provided,
mount blower and tighten screws se-
curely.

3. Be certain that all wire terminals are
securely attached to terminals on blower
motor and that the screw retaining green
ground wire is tight.
4. Locate plastic hole plug installed in the
3/8" diameter opening in the lower right
side of rebox front panel (see Figure 9).
Remove plastic plug and discard.
5. Place speed control against inner wall of
front panel, pushing plastic control shaft
forward through opening (see Figure 10).
6. While supporting speed control, secure
control shaft with lock nut by pushing and
turning lock nut with pliers clockwise until
it is tight against front panel. Place control
knob provided on shaft (see Figure 10).

7. Plug in blower power cord.
a. If your rebox is installed as a freestand-
ing unit, determine whether power cord
will exit left side or right side of rebox.
Install 1 plastic bushing provided into
the 1 1/2" hole in the oor support on the
exit side. Install second plastic bushing
(provided) into the 1 1/2" hole in outer
casing through which power cord will
exit (see Figure 11). Route power cord
through both plastic bushings and plug
power cord into a 3-prong grounded
wall receptacle near rebox.
b. If your rebox installation is recessed
and/or pre-wired, see Built-In Installa-
tion of Blower Accessory, page 11.
8. Turn on power to duplex outlet if previ-
ously turned off per warning in step 1.
9. Check to make sure that power cord is
completely clear of blower wheel and
that there are no other foreign objects in
blower wheel. Turn blower on and check
for operation.
WARNING: Never touch the
blower wheel while in operation.
10. Peel off backing paper and stick supplied
wiring diagram decal on rebox bottom
approximately 12" in front of blower.
11. Replace bottom of rebox. Note: Make sure
back of rebox bottom slides under rear of
rebrick (lift rebrick up if necessary.)
12. Reattach rebox bottom using 4 screws
removed in step 1. Note: Discard remain-
ing hardware items.
13. Install log set heater according to instal-
lation instructions supplied with heater.

duplex outlet for built-in instal-
lation. Follow all local codes. In
absence of local codes follow
The National Electrical Code
ANSI/NFPA 70.
Built-In Installation of Blower Accessory
1. Before replacing bottom of rebox, re-
move screw holding duplex outlet to sup-
port bracket in bottom of rebox. Remove
duplex outlet.
2. Clamp electrical cable into rebox through
smallest hole in outer casing using strain
relief provided.
3. Route wires from electrical box through
hole in side of heater and hole in support
bracket (see Figure 12).
4. Connect wires from the electrical box to
duplex outlet. Match wire colors to those
indicated on duplex outlet. Be sure to
connect ground wire.
5. Replace duplex outlet with screw.
6. Plug blower power cord into duplex outlet.
7. Replace bottom of rebox.

Light your gas appliance with the blower off.
After about 15 minutes, turn blower on to de-
liver heated air at the top louvers. The blower
features a variable control which allows you

Note: Periodically check louvers of the
rebox and remove any dust, dirt or other
obstructions.
INSTALLING LOG HEATER IN FIREBOX
CAUTION: Do not remove the
data plates attached to the heater
base assembly. The data plates
contain important warranty and
safety information.
CAUTION: Do not pick up log
base assembly by burners. This
could damage burners. Only
handle base by grates.
1. Remove four screws holding rebox bot-
tom in place.
2. Lift and remove firebox bottom (see
Figure 13).
3. If installing GA3750A blower acces-
sory (Model FB32CB only), see Installing
Blower Accessory, page 9.
4. Route exible gas line from manual shutoff
valve into rebox through side.
NOTICE: Most building codes
do not permit concealed gas
connections. A exible gas line
is recommended to allow ac-
cessibility from the rebox. The
exible gas supply line connec-
tion to the manual shutoff valve
should be accessible.
5. Install and properly test gas log heater.
Follow installation instructions included
with the vent-free gas log heater that is
being installed.
6. Replace rebox bottom and secure with
screws.
ASSEMBLING AND ATTACHING
OPTIONAL BRASS TRIM
Note: The instructions below show assem-
bling and attaching brass trim to replace.
1. Remove packaging from 3 pieces of
brass trim.
2. Locate 4 brass screws, 2 adjusting plates
with set screws and 2 shims in the hard-
ware packet.
3. Align shim under adjusting plate as shown
in Figure 14.
4. Slide one end of adjusting plate/shim in
slot on mitered edge of top brass trim (see
Figure 14).
5. Slide other end of adjusting plate/shim
in slot on mitered edge of side brass trim
(see Figure 14).
6. While rmly holding edges of brass trim
together, tighten both set screws on the
adjusting plate with slotted screwdriver.
7. Repeat steps 1 through 6 for the other
side.
8. Tighten trim hanging screws (#10 x 6.25
shoulder) into holes in cabinets. Place
the assembled trim onto replace cabinet.
Align hanging notches on trim with hang-
ing screws on side of replace (see Figure
15, page 12). Push trim rmly into place,
sliding hanging notches over hanging
screws.

1. Insert each rod through nine rings located
at top of screen.
2. Insert rst rod into rear hole in left side
of rebox. Fasten rod to rear hole near
center of rebox using black shoulder

FIREBOX INSTALLATION USING
OPTIONAL ACCESSORY MANTELS
This rebox may be installed using the corner
or cabinet mantel with hearth base against
a wall in your home. A perimeter trim kit is
included with the mantel accessories (see
Accessories, page 19). Follow the instructions
included with mantel for installation.
BUILT-IN FIREBOX INSTALLATION
Built-in installation of this rebox involves
installing rebox into a framed-in enclosure.
This makes the front of rebox ush with wall.
If installing a mantel above the rebox, but you
must follow the clearances shown in Figure 7,
page 8. Follow the instructions below to install
the rebox in this manner.
1. Frame in rough opening. Use dimensions
shown in Figure 18, page 13 for the rough
opening. If installing in a corner, use
dimensions shown in Figure 19, page 13
for the rough opening. The height is 33"
(FB32CB) or 34 1/4" (FB32NCB), which is
the same as the wall opening in Figure
18, page 13.
INSTALLING FIREPLACE HOOD
NOTICE: The firebox canopy
(hood) must not be modied or
replaced with a canopy (hood) that
may be provided with the unvented
decorative room heater.
1. Attach three zinc-colored shoulder screws
to back of hood.
2. Insert hood into hood-mounting slots on
rebox.
3. Hold hood in place. Insert two black Phil-
lips screws through bottom of hood and
tighten.

2. Install gas piping to rebox location. This
installation includes an approved exible
gas line (if allowed by local codes) after
the manual shutoff valve. The exible gas
line must be the last item installed on the
gas piping. See Connecting to Gas Supply
in log set owner’s manual.
3. Carefully set firebox in front of rough
opening with back of rebox inside wall
opening. IMPORTANT: If installing pe-
rimeter trim kit, see instructions included
with brass trim accessory. You must install
shoulder screws now.
4. If using GA3750A blower accessory
(Model FB32CB only), see Built-In Instal-
lation of Blower Accessory, page 11.
5. Attach exible gas line to log set. See
Connecting to Gas Supply in log set
owner’s manual.
6. Carefully insert rebox into rough opening.
7. Attach rebox to wall studs using nails
or wood screws through holes in nailing
ange (see Figure 20).
8. Check all gas connections for leaks. See
Checking Gas Connections in log set
owner’s manual.
9. If using optional perimeter trim kit, install
the trim after nal nishing and/or painting
of wall. See instructions included with brass
trim accessory for attaching brass trim.
IMPORTANT: When nishing your rebox,
combustible materials such as wall board,
gypsum board, sheet rock, drywall, plywood,
etc. may be butted up next to the sides and top
of the rebox. Combustible materials should
never overlap the rebox front facing.

Standard Warranty: DESA Heating, LLC warrants this new product and any parts thereof to be free from
defects in material and workmanship for a period of four (4) years from the date of rst purchase from an
authorized dealer provided the product has been installed, maintained and operated in accordance with
DESA Heating, LLC’s warnings and instructions.
For products purchased for commercial, industrial or rental usage, this warranty is limited to 90 days from
the date of rst purchase.
Factory Reconditioned Products
Limited Warranty: DESA Heating, LLC warrants factory reconditioned products and any parts thereof
to be free from defects in material and workmanship for 30 days from the date of rst purchase from an
authorized dealer provided the product has been installed, maintained and operated in accordance with
DESA Heating, LLC’s warnings and instructions.
Terms Common to All Warranties
The following terms apply to all of the above warranties:
Always specify model number and serial number when contacting the manufacturer. To make a claim under
this warranty the bill of sale or other proof of purchase must be presented.
This warranty is extended only to the original retail purchaser when purchased from an authorized dealer,
and only when installed by a qualied installer in accordance with all local codes and instructions furnished
with this product.
This warranty covers the cost of part(s) required to restore this product to proper operating condition and
an allowance for labor when provided by a DESA Heating, LLC Authorized Service Center or a provider
approved by DESA Heating, LLC. Warranty parts must be obtained through authorized dealers of this prod-
uct and/or DESA Heating, LLC who will provide original factory replacement parts. Failure to use original
factory replacement parts voids this warranty.
Travel, handling, transportation, diagnostic, material, labor and incidental costs associated with warranty
repairs, unless expressly covered by this warranty, are not reimbursable under this warranty and are the
responsibility of the owner.
Excluded from this warranty are products or parts that fail or become damaged due to misuse, accidents,
improper installation, lack of proper maintenance, tampering, or alteration(s).
This is DESA Heating, LLC’s exclusive warranty, and to the full extent allowed by law; this express warranty
excludes any and all other warranties, express or implied, written or verbal and limits the duration of any
and all implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability and tness for a particular purpose to four
(4) years on new products and 30 days on factory reconditioned products from the date of rst purchase.
