General information
Introduction
This manualis the operation mode of the AIRSTAR air irrigatormanufactured by
Instrumentation DIFRA in Belgium, allowingto carry outthe caloric tests forthediagnosis
of the vestibule.
Important note : at everyperson who will use the AIRSTAR air irrigator, itis highly
recommended to read this manual andto master this device, before using it.

Unpackinginstructions
Examination of the packing
Beforeopening the package, pleaseinspect the packing against allnoticeable damage.
In that case, immediately advise thecarrierof the damages and keep the cartonas proof.
The AIRSTAR airirrigator is delivered inapackage designed for transportation.
Keep incaseof back shipment.

Examination of the device
Neitherthe device nor its accessories must present any default of appearance at
its reception.Carefully inspect the box incasethe carton has been damaged while
transportation ! Incaseof problems, contact the carrier andyour nearestrepresentative
of Instrumentation DIFRA.
Complain in case of damages
Anymissingpart or malfunction should be immediately reported tothe supplier of
the device together with the invoice, serialnumber anda detailedreport of the problem.
The serial numberis onthe rear panel on theidentification label

Installation procedure
Electric connection
The AIRSTAR hotair irrigator requires apowersource of 115 Vor 230 V –
50/60 Hz, with ground, bymeans of theC1 powercordwhichis delivered togetherwith
the device.The maximal consumption of the AIRSTAR is 50 Watts, or about 800/400
mA.
Prior to connectingthe AIRSTAR tothe mains,the wallplug, fuserating andthe
mains wall outlet (115/230 V) should be checked.
The 2RJ45are for futureuse.

Ventilation of the device
The AIRSTAR is provided bylateral ventilation openings.The ventilation of the
device is performed bynaturalconvection.
Neverput the AIRSTAR nearany source of heat.
Let minimum10 cm (4 inches) freespace oneach sideof the device, so to permit a
good air circulation.

Operationmode
The AIRSTAR is a thermal device for stimulation and is exclusivelydesigned
for the diagnosticof human vestibular organs (caloric tests)
Beforeto bringthe AISTAR intoservice, it is highly recommended you read
the user’s manual.
The AIRSTAR may neverbe usedin rooms where areexplosive risks.
Selection of the temperature
The B1button below on the right of your display, on the front panel of your
AIRSTAR (Figure 4), enables toselect one of the fourset point temperatures,
programmed beforehand inyour device.Either TA, TB, TC orTD.In general, TA andTB
are usedforcoldirrigation, TC andTD for hotirrigation.The onlyrestriction is that TD is
higher thanTC, TC higherthanTB, TBhigher than TA!
T° D (°C) >T° C(°C) >T° B(°C) > T° A (°C)
Default settings : TD=48°C, TC=44°C, TB=30°Cand TA=26°C

Programming and reading the set point temperatures
Place the button B2on OFF andthe button B1on the temperature to program.The
button Pabove onthe right of your displayA,on the front plateof your AIRSTAR (Figure
4), enables to programand/or read the set points of your device.Press on thebutton P.
Then, youhearacontinuous soundbeep during these 5 seconds.The set point associated
with the position of thetemperature selection knob is displayed.This value is preceded by
the letterP, it means forexample: P27.0.
If youwantto modify the set temperature, turnthen the button Pclockwiseto
increaseorcounterclockwiseto decrease!
Press asecondtime on the button, then release it.The device turns over inits
normal mode andstarts againto regulate.
Programming the times
The button B2allows to select 5 fixedtimes, itmeans 40,60, 80, 100or120
seconds which correspond to the irrigationtimes.The device emits a beep afterthis time
(end of irrigation), thena second beep afteratime t1 (beginning of ocular fixation) and a
thirdbeepafteratimet2 (endof ocularfixation).The device will finally stop after atime
t3 (end of calorictest).
These three time, t1, t2 andt3 are programmable.
To modify t1, place thebutton B2on 40.Then follow the samesteps as to modify
the temperatures : push on button Pduring5 seconds, turns thenthe button Pleft of
right, pushasecond time on the button Pto end the programming.
To modify t2, placethe button B2 on60and perform thesame operation as fort1.
To modify t3, placethe button B2 on80and perform thesame operation as fort1
and t2.
During programming the set point temperatures or the times,it is imperative
not to turn the buttons B1 andB2.

Selection of the irrigation time
On the left side of the frontpanel, youwillfind the irrigation time selectorB2
(Figure 5).This facilitybrings you the advantage to avoidthe manipulation of a stopwatch
duringthe irrigation.

The stopwatchis drivenby the irrigationtime selectorB2 (Figure 5) and by the
manipulation of the handle.With the selectorin the "OFF" position, the stopwatch remains
reset and hidden.
Another positionstarts the countingat "t -9"seconds when you take up the handle.
On passingat 0second, a beep invites youto begin the irrigation.A second beep marks the
end of theirrigation when the time is elapsed.Afterthis second beep, the stopwatch
turns 1 more minute afterhaving you hang up the handle.
Handlingof the irrigation handle
The irrigationhandle of your AIRSTAR device is aprecisionmechanicalpiece.It is
highlyrecommended to handle it carefully and to avoidanyfall.Never seal the endof the
handle (air exit).
Sound and visual signals
YourAIRSTAR air irrigatoris equippedwithprotections which offeramaximum
security in case of handling errors :
•Takingup thehandle M (Figure 6) whenthe desired set point temperature is
not reached, the AIRSTAR emits slowintermittent sound signals (bleep-bleep)
•If one of the maximaltemperaturelimits is been passed(0°Cand50.0°C), the
AIRSTAR emits rapidintermittent signals andthe displayA (Figure 6)
indicates anerror bydisplayinga" E " onthe first digit.Change thenthe set
point to decrease the outlet temperature.

•As alast resort, athermal switchwillshutdown the powersupplyof the
heating element.In this case, itis necessary tolet replace this thermal switch.

Guarantee andservice
The AIRSTAR is warranted byDifrato be free of defects inmaterials and
workmanshipat the time of purchase for aperiod of oneyear.
The warranty covers both piece parts and labor.The warrantyis onlyapplicable if
the originalinvoicementioning model, serialnumber andpurchasedate is presented.Costs
and risks of transport as well as removalandinstallation of AIRSTAR,and any othercosts
directlyor indirectly related to the actual repair of the AIRSTAR, arenot covered bythis
warranty.
The warranty is notapplicable:
•to damages causedby accident, negligence, modifications,useof non-DIFRA
spareparts, improperuse or installation;
•to damages causedby lightening, water, fire, acts of war, publicdisturbances,
incorrect mainvoltages,incorrect ventilation or anyother causebeyond the
control of DIFRA;
•for repairs performed bynon-authorizedrepair shops;
•if suchrepairs damage this AIRSTAR.

Maintenance
The usermust not proceed to serviceoperation.
A yearly verification of your AIRSTAR willassurea reliable and precise working.
YourDIFRA/Micromedical representative willtake chargeof this operation.
Maintenance of external surfaces
Use apolishingcloth of drycloth to wipeoff dust anddirt.
When the surfaces areverydirty, wipewitha soft cloth dippedinsome neutral
cleanserdiluted five or sixtimes with water and wrung outwell, then wipe again with a dry
cloth.Do not use other cleanser.
Neverus thinners, benzene, insecticide sprays orotherchemicals on or near this
unit, sincethese will corrode the surfaces.
Do not wash by pouring water, do not use corrosive products.
