INTRODUCTION
DominosuppliesSafetyDataSheets(SDS’s)givingspecificsafety
informationwitheachofitsink,make--up andwashfluids.Thereare
alsowarningsoneachcontainer.Thefollowingnotesareforgeneral
guidanceonly.
BasicRequirements
Whenusedcorrectly,printinginksdonotcauseproblems.However,
everybodyusingthemshouldbefamiliarwiththeappropriatesafety
standardsandbeawareoftheprecautionsthatshouldbetaken.The
followingarebasicrequirements.
DProperstandardsofindustrialpracticerelatingtocleanliness and
tidiness mustbemaintained
DInksandtheircontainersmustbestoredandhandledwithcare
DAll whocomeintocontactwithinksmustbeproperlyinstructed
intheiruse.
Directionsforsafeworkingpracticesvaryaccordingtothe
environment.Thefollowingarebroadprinciples sothatnecessary
precautionsmay betaken.
DContactwiththemouthmustbeavoided.Therefore eating,
drinkingorsmoking,oranypersonalhabitsoractionswhichmay
transferinktothemouth,mustbeavoided
DContactwiththe eyesmustbeavoided.Suitable eyeprotection
mustalwaysbewornwheneverthereisanyriskofsplashingor
misting.If inkdoesgetintotheeyes,firstaidtreatmentistoflood
theaffectedeyefor15minuteswithsalinesolution,(orcleanwater
ifsalinesolutionisnotavailable),takingcarenottoallowthewater
torunintoanunaffectedeye.Medicalaidmustbeobtained
immediately
DMostinkscontainsolventswhichmayinjuretheskin.Warningof

DManyinkscontainmaterialswhichvaporise easilyandcanbe
inhaled. Goodventilationisnecessary
DAnyusedcleaningmaterials,e.g.rags,paperwipes,areapotential
firehazard.Theymustbecollectedforsafedisposalafteruse
DAfterexposuretoink,all possibletracesmustbewashedoff as
soonaspossibleat thenearestwashingfacility.
Certaininksareallowedforusewheretheycanbeinindirectcontact
withfood.Inthesecases,thefollowingprecautionsmustbeobserved
inadditiontothoseappropriatetohygiene:
DTheinksmustonly beusedinprinters suppliedfromnew foruse
withtheseinks.Anyrepairsandreplacementsmustusegenuine,
newandunusedspareparts
DTheinksmustnotbeusedinprinterswhichhavepreviouslybeen
used,atanytime,foranyotherpurpose.
Inotherwords,aprinterusing”foodgrade”inkcanbeconvertedfor
usewithotherinks,butaprinterwhich hasusedotherinksmustnot
beconvertedforusewithfoodgradeink.
Storage
Printinginksmustbestoredinwell--ventilatedbuildings,orinareas
setasideforthepurpose,chosenforsafetyincaseof fire.Materials
basedonvolatile,flammablesolventsmustbestoredinaccordance
withlocalregulations.
FireRisk
Foranelectricalfire,donotusewater.If watermustbeused,suchas
inthecaseofaNitro--celluloseinkfire(seebelow) thepowerMUSTBE
REMOVEDfirst.
ManyinksusedininkjetprintingcontainNitro--celluloseasthebinder
andremain highlyflammablewhendry.Observeall warningsgiven
onthemachineandthefollowingsafetyinstructions:
DIf therehasbeenanaccumulationofdriedink,donotuseferrous
metal(ironorsteel)scraperstoremoveit,astheycanproduce
sparks

DIf dryNitro--cellulosebasedinkignites,itwill generateitsown
oxygenandcanonlybeextinguishedbyloweringthetemperature
withwater
DIf aNitro--cellulosefireoccurs,ENSURE THAT THE
ELECTRICALPOWERISIMMEDIATELY REMOVEDFROM
THEPRINTERBEFOREwaterisusedtoextinguishthefire.
Fireriskisa mostimportantconsiderationwhereprintinginksare
storedandused.Thedegreeoffirehazardwillvaryconsiderablyfrom
onetypeofinkorwashtoanother.
Water--basedinkswill notburn,althoughinksbasedonwater--alcohol
mixturesmay burnifthereis sufficientalcoholpresent.Prolonged
exposureofwater--basedsystemstohightemperaturesmayevaporate
thewatertogiveaflammableresidue.
Solvent--basedinksofferagreaterdegree ofhazard dependingonthe
particularsolventorsolventcombination.Whenthereisaparticular
hazardtheappropriateinformationisgivenontheSDS.
Inkjetprintersplacesmall electrostatic chargesontheinkdropsused
forprinting.Inmostcircumstances,suchaswhentheyarriveat the
printsurface,these electrostatic chargesare eitherconductedawayor
cannotaccumulate.However,duringmaintenance,printdropsmaybe
collectedinacontainer,suchasabeaker.Itisessentialthat this
containerismadeofconductingmaterialandis securelyconnectedto
ground/earth.The electrostatic chargeswill thenbesafelyconducted
toground/earth.
If thereisafire,thereisalikelihoodthatdangerousfumeswill arise
fromprintinginks.Forthisreasoninkmustbestoredwhereitcanbe
reachedquicklybythefirefightingservice,andwhereitwill not
spreadbeyondthestore.

Spillagesand Disposal
WARNING:Somedriedinks arehighlyflammable.Clean up
allinkspillages immediately.Donotallowtheink
todry orallowanybuild--up ofdriedink spills.
Spillagesmustbecleanedup as soonaspossiblewiththeappropriate
solventmaterialsandwithregardtothesafetyofpersonnel.Caremust
betakentopreventspillagesor residuefromcleaningup entering
drainsorsewagesystems.
Inksandassociatedfluidsarematerialswhichconductelectricity.
Therefore,powertotheprintermustbeswitchedoff whilespillages
insidetheprintercabinetarebeingcleanedup.
Printinginksandassociatedfluidsmustnotbetreatedasordinary
waste.Theymustbedisposedofusingapprovedmethodsaccording
tolocalregulations.
