Communicating With DynaWrite:
Features That Work for You
The DynaWrite is a keyboard-based augmentative communication device. To
begin communicating with DynaWrite, simply type a message and then select the
Speak key. This device can also be used to offer personal reminders, as an
environmental control unit, as a word processing and file management tool, as a
direct connection to your cellular phone, and even as the keyboard for your
personal computer. Learning to use and customize these features efficiently will
help you make the most of using your DynaWrite.
This chapter will briefly introduce you to the many versatile features of your
DynaWrite device. Referrals to other sections of the DynaWrite Reference Guide
and to tutorials on the DynaGuide training CD will help you find more detailed
information about using and customizing the features of your DynaWrite device.
What Are the System Speech Options?
The DynaWrite has numerous options for customized synthetic speech. You may
select from three new VeriVox voices, Michael, Sarah and Jamie, or choose from
nine different DECtalk voices. The speech rate and volume of each voice can be
adjusted to meet your individual preferences. For more information about
customizing DynaWrite’s synthetic speech features, please see the entry for Menu
2: Speech Controls in the Menus section of this manual.
You may also opt to enhance your device’s synthetic speech capabilities by adding
some digitally recorded messages. To learn how to record and play your own
digital messages, please read the reference guide entry for Menu 1.8: Digitized
Speech or the Digitized Speech Operations step-by-step instructions.
How Can Communication Messages Be Created?
Original communication messages can be created by simply typing on your
DynaWrite keyboard. The text you create will be displayed in the DynaWrite
Message Window. To learn more about Message Window text, please see the
Message Window entry in the DynaWrite Basics section of this manual. New
messages can also be created through visual or auditory scanning. To learn about

5
Communicating with DynaWrite
DynaWrite Reference Guide
the DynaWrite scanning features, please refer to the entries for Menu 5: Selection
Methods and Menu 5.2: Scanning Controls in the Menus section of this manual.
The Scanning Operations step-by-steps are another useful reference.
The Message Window can also be filled with text that you have previously created
and saved in your DynaWrite file manager. These saved files can be loaded to the
Message Window whenever you want to use them. Prepared text files can be
especially helpful for telephone greetings and other frequently used messages. To
learn more about saving and loading text messages, see the File Operations step-
by-steps in this manual.
Another way to create quick message access is to create a macro. Macros are
customized operations which are programmed to automatically run a sequence of
steps for one or more tasks. For example, you can create a macro that contains
both a text message and the command for speaking the message. Once the macro
is created, you need only to invoke the macro to have the message loaded and
spoken. For more information about creating and invoking customized macros,
please refer to the Macro Operations step-by-steps, or the manual entry for
Menu 1.3: Macros.
What System Features Can Be Used to Accelerate Communication?
DynaWrite’s rate enhancement features can help you compose messages quickly
and efficiently. These features, which include word prediction, context prediction,
flexible abbreviation expansion and abbreviation expansion, work to reduce the
number of keystrokes needed to compose a message. When less typing is
required, your communication rate will be faster and more efficient.
As you are typing, the word prediction feature anticipates your word choices and
displays various options for quick selection. Word prediction draws its selections
from the DynaWrite dictionary. You can choose to make your own personal
vocabulary, including single words, multiple word phrases, full sentences or
names, available for word prediction by adding these items to the DynaWrite user
dictionary. To make the most of DynaWrite word prediction, be sure to create
dictionary entries for the names of family, friends, businesses, towns, movies and
books that you talk about often. Give these entries high frequencies because
items with high frequencies are predicted more quickly. For example, you may
want to try giving a frequency of 1000 or more to an item you’d like to have
predicted immediately.

6DynaVox Systems LLC
●See how the word prediction feature works by following this example:
Be sure to activate the word prediction feature before beginning.
Try setting the feature to predict after only one letter. Look at the
reference guide entry for Menu 6: Rate Enhancement Controls for
more information on selecting this feature.
In the Message Window, begin to type The phone is ringing. When
you type the first letter (T), the word The will appear in the first
prediction box. Select it by selecting the Word1 key, and begin
typing the next word. The word phone will be predicted after you
type two letters. Select phone from the prediction boxes and begin
typing the next word. With word prediction, you can complete this
sentence with 11 keystrokes. Without rate enhancement, this
sentence requires 21 keystrokes.
To learn more about the Message Window or the word prediction
boxes, refer to the DynaWrite Basics section of this manual. For
a more detailed demonstration of word prediction in action, please
see your DynaGuide training CD.
The word prediction feature can be further enhanced with context prediction, a
feature that anticipates word selections based on the grammatical structure of the
sentence you are typing. For context prediction to function efficiently, all
dictionary entries must be assigned the correct part of speech.
Flexible abbreviation expansion is a rate enhancement feature that is especially
helpful for names and long phrases. If you create dictionary entries for the words,
names, sentences and phrases that you use often, those items can be automatically
predicted by this feature. When you type a few letters, the flexible abbreviation
expansion feature will search the dictionary and present items that include the
given letters in a similar sequence. You then can quickly choose the predicted
items rather than continuing to type. Flexible abbreviation expansion is especially
simple to use as no specifically defined abbreviations are required. You may type
approximate spellings or simply enter random letters from a word or phrase.
Flexible abbreviation expansion can accelerate your communication if you include
frequently used greetings, farewells and questions in your user dictionary.
●To see how the flexible abbreviation expansion feature works, try the
following example:

7
DynaWrite Reference Guide
Go to the Dictionary menu and make an entry in the user
dictionary for Listen up! I have something to say! For instructions
on creating a new dictionary entry, please see the Vocabulary
Operations step-by-steps.
Be sure to activate flexible abbreviation. See the entry for Menu 6:
Rate Enhancement Controls for more information.
In the Message Window, type L, Pand H. Listen up! I have
something to say! will appear in one of the prediction boxes below.
Select the appropriate box and the phrase will appear in the
Message Window. To learn more about the Message Window or
word prediction boxes, please read the DynaWrite Basics section of
this manual.
For a more detailed demonstration of word prediction in action,
please see your DynaGuide training CD.
Another way to accelerate message composition is to take advantage of the
DynaWrite abbreviation expansions feature. This feature allows you to define
specific abbreviations for longer words and phrases, thereby reducing the number
of letters you must type for message composition. Once you have defined a
specific abbreviation in the DynaWrite software, the DynaWrite will automatically
expand the abbreviation into the full word or phrase whenever the abbreviation is
typed and followed with a space. For example, you may define JLS as an
abbreviation for Jane L. Smith. If the abbreviation expansions feature is active,
Jane L. Smith will appear onscreen wherever you type JLS and select the space bar.
This feature can also be used to reduce the keystrokes needed for greetings,
introductions and questions. Learn how to create your own unique abbreviation
expansions by reviewing the Rate Enhancement Operations step-by-steps.
●To experiment with the abbreviation expansion feature, follow this
example:
Go to the Abbreviation Expansions menu and define an
abbreviation for your full name. Instructions for creating a new
abbreviation expansion can be found in the Rate Enhancement
Operations step-by-steps. Be sure to remember the abbreviation
you use.
Communicating with DynaWrite

8DynaVox Systems LLC
In the Message Window, type your new abbreviation and then select
the space bar. The abbreviation you chose should be automatically
expanded into your full name. No other selections are necessary.
To see a demonstration of the abbreviation expansion feature,
please refer to your DynaGuide training CD.
Communication can also be made more efficient with the use of macros.
DynaWrite’s macros feature provides you with the ability to create customized
operations which include all the steps for completing a complex procedure in only
a few keystrokes. Macros are especially helpful for phone calls you make often.
For example, you may want to create a macro for calling a friend and asking him
or her to come over.
Macros can also be combined with the DynaWrite’s environmental control
capabilities. Create macros for activities you do often, like turning on the TV for
favorite programs. A single macro could turn on the living room light, turn on the
television, switch to the sports channel and speak the message “The hockey game is
about to start.”
If you would like to read more about macros, see the entry for Menu 1.3: Macros
or the Macro Operations step-by-steps in this manual. For a demonstration of the
macros feature, please refer to your DynaGuide training CD.
Can the System Be Integrated With Computers?
Your DynaWrite device was shipped with a CD that includes DynaWrite Backup
and Utility software. When this software is installed on your personal computer, it
provides an important resource for DynaWrite information. With this software, text
files and digital sound files can be transferred from your DynaWrite and stored in
your computer. When needed, these files can be easily restored from the
computer to the DynaWrite. This feature allows you to save DynaWrite file space
by editing and storing large files on your computer. It also makes it possible to
use your computer for backup storage space. In fact, your complete DynaWrite
user data, including your selected settings and all of your customized
programming, can be effectively backed up to your computer using the Backup
and Utility software. Backing up is an extremely important process, as it will
prevent the loss of information if anything should ever happen to your device. If

9
DynaWrite Reference Guide
your user data is backed up regularly, you can easily restore it to your device
when it is needed. To learn more about transferring information to your computer
with DynaWrite Backup and Utility software, please refer to the Backup & Utility
Software section of this manual.
You can also access your personal computer through DynaWrite’s Be the Keyboard
and Xfer features. These two features enable you to work with your computer
without accessing the Backup and Utility software. The Be the Keyboard feature
allows you to use your DynaWrite keyboard as a computer keyboard. When Be
the Keyboard mode is active, any keystrokes you make on your DynaWrite
keyboard are directly transmitted to the computer. With Be the Keyboard, you can
complete any computer operation, including mouse moves, that could normally by
controlled by standard keyboard. The Xfer feature lets you compose text on your
DynaWrite device and then send it to your computer. With this unique feature,
text is sent character by character, as if it is being rapidly typed into your
computer. Xfer is perfect for quick tasks like emails, as notes and responses can
be quickly composed in your DynaWrite Message Window and then easily sent to
your email server. For more information on using Be the Keyboard and Xfer,
check the Keyboard entry in the DynaWrite Basics section of this manual, as well
as the Be the Keyboard and Xfer Operations step-by-steps.
The DynaWrite can interface with computers through USB or Serial cable
connections, or through the infrared capabilities of the DynaBeam Access. Check
the step-by-steps for each procedure to determine it’s connection options. To see
a tutorial demonstrating any of these computer connections, please refer to your
DynaGuide training CD.
Can the System Be Integrated With Cellular Telephones?
With a connection to the DynaVox Cabled Phone Module, you can use your
DynaWrite device to make and receive cellular phone calls. DynaWrite even gives
you the option to store frequently-called phone numbers and greeting messages in
a system phone book. To read more about DynaWrite’s phone capabilities, please
see the entry for Menu 1.6: Phone and the documentation that came with your
DynaVox Cabled Phone Module. For a detailed tutorial, refer to the options on
your DynaGuide training CD.
Communicating with DynaWrite

10 DynaVox Systems LLC
Can the System Be Used as an Environmental Control Unit?
DynaWrite’s environmental control capabilities make it possible for you to use your
DynaWrite as part of an X-10 infrared system or as a remote control for commercial
appliances such as televisions and compact disc players. For more information
about using DynaWrite as an environmental control unit (ECU), refer to the entry
for Menu 1.6: ECU, and the Environmental Control Operations step-by-steps in this
reference guide. To see a demonstration of the DynaWrite’s environmental control
features, see the tutorials on your DynaGuide training CD.
What Are the File Editing and Management Capabilities?
The DynaWrite File Manager allows you to easily create, edit and save text files.
This feature allows you to plan ahead by composing messages in advance and
retrieving them when they are needed. In the File Manager, you may even create
your own file directories and organize your files to meet your needs. Instructions
for working with text files can be found in the manual entry for Menu 1.1: File
Manager, as well as in the File Manager Operations step-by-steps in this manual.
Can the System Be Used to Offer Reminders?
Your DynaWrite device can be programmed to automatically remind you of
important events in your daily schedule. Reminders can be scheduled to be
presented one time only or to be repeated daily or weekly. Take advantage of this
feature by setting up reminders for taking daily doses of medication, the times of
favorite TV shows, or regular social and professional appointments. You can create
and customize your reminders by following the instructions in the Date, Time and
Operations step-by-steps in this manual. You may also see a demonstration of the
reminders feature on the DynaGuide training CD.
What Are the System Specifications?
The DynaWrite device features a standard size keyboard and a 640 X 240
monochrome display with optional backlighting. It has a memory capacity of 32
MBytes SDRAM and 16 MBytes Flash. This is enough memory to support
thousands of pages of text. The device weighs only 2.16 pounds (1 kilogram) and
