AUTOMATIC PILL REMINDER AND DISPENSING SYSTEM
SET-UP AND USER INSTRUCTIONS
Thank you for buying an e-pill Medication Reminder. Your new Med-Time XL is an Automatic
Pill Reminder and Dispensing System designed to support individuals in taking their
medications properly and on time.
• The Med-Time XL dispenses all your
medications (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6…) up to 28
times per day and reminds you (the
patient) with a loud alarm and blinking
light (up to 60 minutes in duration), when
it is time to take medications.
• The Med-Time XL contains 28 individual
compartments that you (the caregiver)
can easily load with medications (pills) to
accommodate a range of dosing
schedules. The device should be kept
locked (2 keys are included).
• The Med-Time XL dispenses the right medications, in the right dosage, at the right time.
When the alarm goes off (loud alarm & blinking light), pick up the Med-Time XL with one
hand. Now by simply turning the device up-side down, the right medications will fall out of
the opening in lid, into the patient’s other open hand.

SET-UP e-pill Med-Time XL FOR THE FIRST TIME
Activate Med-Time XL
1. Remove the battery cover from the underside of the unit.
2. Remove the red strip and discard.
3. Verify that all batteries (4 AA Alkaline batteries) are secure,
in the right position. Replace the battery cover.
Open the Dispenser (controls are inside)
1. Make sure the device is unlocked. Your Med-Time XL comes complete with a lock and
two (2) keys.
2. Hold the Med-Time XL unit as shown, press in with your thumb, and lift up the lid.
3. The lid opens and provides you access to the display and control buttons.

BASIC SETTINGS
Set Current Time, # of Daily Doses, and Alarm Times (Mode-A)
As easy as 1-2-3. You must at a minimum set the Basic Settings in order for the e-pill Med-
Time XL to function correctly. This should only take 10 minutes of your time. When you first
remove the battery strip, the Med-Time XL display reads
12:00 am and is automatically in Mode-A.
1. Set Current Time (CLOCK)
1. Tap Button 1 repeatedly until you reach CLOCK. When
the display reads CLOCK, wait a few seconds.
2. The clock is displayed and begins to pulsate indicating
that you can set the current time. Set the current time
by tapping Button 2 Reverse or Button 3 Forward.
1. Hold down the button to speed through the time faster.
3. After you set the correct time, press Button 1 to store the current time.
2. Set Number Alarms (# of Doses) Per Day (DOSE)
1. Tap Button 1 until you reach DOSES. When the display
reads DOSES, wait a few seconds.
2. The # of doses per day will flash (01, 02, 03 … up to 28)
3. Press Button 3 to add doses, or Button 2 to decrease
doses.
2. The typical patient takes pills from one (1) to four (4) times daily. Med-Time XL has
the flexibility to be programmed to dispense pills from 1 to 28 doses per day to
accommodate the most complex regimens.
4. After you select the # of doses per day, press Button 1 to store the number of doses
per day.
3. Set Alarm Times (ALARMS).
Set the time for each Daily Medication Alarm.
1. When the display reads ALARMS, wait a few seconds. To the
left of the display you see the Dose # (1-28) and the alarm time.
2. Set the alarm time using Buttons 2 Reverse or 3 Forward.
Time can be set in 5-minute increments. Make sure you select
the right time and please pay attention to AM and PM on the right side of the display.
3. Press Button 1 to advance to the second dose, and set the alarm time. Repeat this
procedure until you set all alarms to the desired times.
3. You can set alarms only for as many doses as you have selected.
Complete Basic Settings (Mode-A)
1. Press and hold Button 1 for five seconds,to store your settings and to return to
normal operating mode. The current time is displayed. Proceed to ADDITIONAL
SETTINGS, or to the LOAD DISPENSER Section.

Before you can begin to use your new e-pill automatic pill dispenser, you must set it up. At a
minimum you must set the current time, number of daily alarms (doses) and the alarm times
under Mode-A (basic settings).
Additional optional functions (Mode-B) include alarm tone, alarm duration, dispensing history
log file, early dose, auto daylight saving time, visual alarm and diagnostic tests.
Your e-pill Med-Time XL contains two programming modes, Mode-A and Mode-B, to
program system functions (see below).
Mode-A: Tap button 1 to move between menu choices (CLOCK > DOSES > ALARMS >).
Mode-B: To reach Mode-B, first press and hold BUTTON 3 for five (5) Seconds until the word
BEFORE appears. Release button 3. Tap button 1 to move between menu choices
BEFORE > AFTER > SOUND > LIGHT > HOURS > DATE > RECORD > TEST > BEFORE
Please remember to press Button 1 for 5 seconds to store your settings. Your Med-Time XL
responds by memorizing the settings and returning to normal operating mode (shows current
time on the display).

1. After you complete the set-up of either Mode-A or Mode-B
functions, press Button 1 for Five (5) Seconds to store the
settings and return to normal operating mode.
2. If you press no Buttons for 30 seconds, Med-Time XL automatically
returns to normal operating mode (automatic time-out).

Your e-pill Med-Time XL offers several important options and additional functions to help your
patient remember to take medications on time and to help build flexibility into the medication
schedule. These optional settings and features can be accessed using Mode-B. Setting of
Mode-B functions are optional and are not required for operation of your e-pill Med-Time XL.
Additional Settings
1. Press and Hold Button 3 for five seconds until it reads BEFORE.
2. Tap Button 1 until you reach the feature you want to change.
Each tap of Button 1 moves you to the next feature: BEFORE > AFTER > SOUND
>LIGHT > HOURS > DATE > RECORD > TEST > BEFORE ….
3. Exit Mode-B at any time by pressing and holding Button 1 for five seconds. Pressing
button 1 stores your settings and returns the dispenser to normal operating mode (the
current time is displayed).
Set Early Dose (BEFORE)
The early dose feature allows you to take medications before their normal scheduled time.
Simply pickup the dispenser, turn it over twice and put it down. The next set of medications
will rotate into position. Early Dose settings from 5 minutes to 30 minutes are possible
(default time is 30 minutes).
1. Press and hold Button 3 for five seconds until the
display reads BEFORE.
2. Press Button 2 Down or Button 3 Up to set the
timeframe that a user can pre-pour medications (0-30
minutes maximum).
3. If the early dose feature is not required, set at 00:00.
4. Press Button 1 to set.
If the unit returns to Normal mode, follow steps outlined
for setting each function.
Set Alarm Duration (AFTER)
Alarm duration allows you to set the duration of the sound from 5 minutes to 60 minutes
(default time is 60 minutes).
1. Press and hold Button 3 for five seconds until the display reads BEFORE, then tap
Button 1 repeatedly until AFTER displays.
2. Press Buttons 2 Down or 3 Up to set the time desired, 5 minutes to 1 hour (60
minutes = 1.00 hour) maximum.
3. Press Button 1 to set.
If the unit returns to Normal mode, follow steps outlined for setting each function.

Alarm Tone (SOUND)
There are four alarm sounds (and no alarm tone) available. Choose the right alarm tone
(frequency) to compensate for any hearing deficiency the patient may have.
1. Press and hold Button 3 for five seconds until the display reads BEFORE, then tap
Button 1 until SOUND displays.
2. Choose your preferred sound, 01, 02, 03 or 04, by pressing Buttons 2 or 3. If no
sound is required, set at 00 (00 = silent alarm = no tone).
3. Press Button 1 to set the next function.
If the unit returns to Normal mode, follow the steps outlined for setting each function.
Visual Alarm (LIGHT)
In addition to a sound alarm, you may use the visual alarm (blinking red light). This may
be an important feature for the hearing impaired patient or as an additional reminder to
take medications.
4. Press and hold Button 3 for five seconds until the display reads BEFORE, then tap
Button 1 until LIGHT displays.
5. Buttons 2 to turn OFF or Button 3 to turn ON (default is ON)
6. Press Button 1 to set the next function.
If the unit returns to Normal mode, follow the steps outlined for setting each function.
Time Format “AM/PM” or “Military Time” (HOURS)
Allows you to choose between 12-hour (AM/PM) or 24-hour time (Military Time) formats.
The default setting for your e-pill Med-Time XL default setting is 12-hour (AM/PM) time
format.
1. Press and hold Button 3 for five seconds until the display reads BEFORE, then tap
Button 1 until HOURS displays.
2. Press Button 2 to set to 12 hours (AM/PM), or Press Button 3 for 24-hour (Military
Time) format.
3. Press Button 1 to set the next function.
If the unit returns to Normal mode, follow the steps outlined for setting each function.
Current Date (DATE)
Set the current date (year, day, month) in order for the history log and automatic daylight
saving time functions to work properly.
NOTE Your Med-Time XL will automatically adjust the current time for Daylight
Saving Time, but only if you set the date.

1. Press and hold Button 3 for five seconds until the display reads BEFORE, then tap
Button 1 repeatedly until DATE displays.
2. Program the date in the following order:
a. Year = YY. Press Buttons 2 and 3 to set, and press Button 1 to advance.
b. Month = MM. Press Buttons 2 and 3 to set, and press Button 1 to advance.
c. Day = DD. Press Button 2 and 3 to set, and press Button 1 to complete.
3. Press Button 1 to set the next function.
If the unit returns to Normal mode, follow the steps outlined for setting each function.
Dispensing History Log (RECORD)
Your e-pill Med-Time XL can record when medications are actually dispensed (event
history log record). Every time medications are dispensed, an entry is created in the log
file.
The log entry records the actual time (Time and Date) when the previous 28-medication
dispensing events (date and time for each medication event) occurred. The event log
memory holds up to 28 events. You must set the current date (DATE) in order for this
feature to work.
1. Press and hold Button 3 for five seconds until the display reads BEFORE, then tap
Button 1 until RECORD displays.
2. The time that the last medication was taken automatically shows on the display. To
view the previous 27 times (total number of records is 28), press Buttons 2 or 3.
3. Press Button 1 to set next function.
If the unit returns to Normal mode, follow the steps outlined for setting each function.
Perform Diagnostic Test (TEST)
The e-pill Med-Time XL has built-in functions to test the dispenser. To test the basic
functions of your e-pill Med-Time XL perform these diagnostic tests.
Please run this test before you contact e-pill Medication Reminders or the manufacturer.
Test # 1: Alarm and Rotation (MOVING): Test the normal dispensing functions.
1. Press and hold Button 3 for five seconds until the display reads BEFORE, then tap
Button 1 until TEST displays.
2. Press Button 3 to start diagnostic Test #1.
The word MOVING appears on the display. The Medication Tray will rotate one sector,
the alarm sounds and TAKE appears on the display.
3. Close the lid.
4. Turn Med-Time XL over to simulate medication dispensing. If everything is normal, the
alarm will stop and the word TEST will re-appear on the display.
If the word ERROR appears at the end of the test, contact e-pill Medication Reminders or
the manufacturer.

Test # 2: Early Dose (TURN): Test the early dose feature and dispensing functions.
1. Press and hold Button 3 for five seconds until the display reads BEFORE, then tap
Button 1 until TEST displays.
2. Press Button 2 to start diagnostic Test #2.
The word TURN appears on the display.
3. Close the lid, turn Med-Time XL upside down twice, and then turn it back to the upright
position. The tray rotates and the alarm sounds.
4. Turn Med-Time XL over to simulate medication dispensing. If everything is normal, the
alarm will stop and the word TEST will re-appear on the display.
If the word ERROR appears at the end of the test, contact e-pill Medication Reminders or
the manufacturer.
ERROR FUNCTION / ERROR MESSAGES
The e-pill Med-Time XL has built-in functions for signalling failure in moving the
medication tray, low battery condition or if the dispenser is not resting in its normal
position (dispenser is left turned upside down).
If any error condition occurs, unlock the dispenser, remove any obstructions, remove the
batteries, and insert four fresh AA Alkaline batteries. Perform the diagnostic test as
described under TEST in Mode-B.
Rotational Error: If a rotational error condition occurs, the loudspeaker is turned on (the
alarm sounds continuously) and the display shows ERROR. This might be caused by an
obstruction between the body of the dispenser and the tray. Clear the obstruction, remove
and replace one battery to clear and reactivate Med-Time XL.
Low Battery: If a low battery condition occurs LOWBATT is displayed.
Upside Down: If the dispenser is lying upside down (during BEFORE and AFTER
interval), IT WILL NOT DISPENSE medications. A warning signal (constant alarm) is
sounded and the word TILTED is displayed. Reset by pressing Button 3. Check the
alignment of the medication tray.

LOAD your e-pill Med-Time XL AUTOMATIC PILL DISPENSER
You need to refill your e-pill Med-Time XL Automatic Pill Dispenser at regular intervals. The
frequency depends upon how many doses you dispense per day.
Example: If the patient takes medications two times per day, you need to refill your
dispenserevery 14 days (28 compartments divided by 2 times per day).
SUMMARY: How the caregiver loads the e-pill Med-Time XL Automatic Pill Dispenser:
⇒ Unlock and Open the Automatic Pill Dispenser.
⇒ Select Indicator Ring.
Pre-printed rings are included for 1,2,3 or 4 times per Day.
Fill out a blank ring for 5 – 28 times medication times per Day.
⇒ Place the correct Indicator Ring on the Medication Tray.
⇒ Load Pills in Medication Tray(s). Doses are dispensed clockwise.
Two medication trays are included with your e-pill Med-Time XL dispenser
system. One active medication tray (in the unit) and one spare medication
tray (with dust cover). Use the Indicator Ring as a guide when you fill the
tray. Make sure the right medications, at the right dosage are placed in
each compartment. If the medications do not fit in one compartment,
consider setting two alarms for the same time.
⇒ Complete the Prescription Card (as needed).
⇒ Place the Medication Ring in the automatic pill dispenser. Position the
Medication Tray, so that the compartment under the Opening in the Lid is
the last dose taken.
⇒ Close and Lock your e-pill Med-Time XL Automatic Pill Dispenser.
The e-pill Med-Time XL Automatic Pill Dispenser is now filled (re-filled) and ready for use.
Medications.
There are two medication trays supplied, one (1) Active and one (1) Spare. Additional Spare
trays may be purchased from e-pill Medication Reminders.
1. You may fill the Active tray while it is in the dispenser, or you may remove the tray
to fill it.
2. Place the correct pills in each section of the
medication tray. The Indicator Ring acts as a label for
each compartment.
3. Place the next dose scheduled to be dispensed to the
right of the opening (see arrow).
4. The doses are dispensed in a clockwise manner. If
one compartment is not big enough to hold all
medications for one dose, you can use two
compartments and set two alarms for the same time.
5. Align the tray when you are done.

Indicator Ring.
There are three indicator rings (day/dosage discs) supplied with your e-pill Med-Time XL.
• Two (2) printed discs (front side and back side) for 1, 2,
3 or 4 doses per day.
• One blank disc for situations when you dispense
medications more than 4 times per day. You may
complete the blank disc by hand to indicate the dosage
times.
1. Select the correct Indicator Ring.
2. Open the lid of the dispenser, and place the appropriate
disc for the dosage required per day on top of the
medication tray.
3. Secure the disc in place by bending down the four corners.
Prescription Card.
Complete the Prescription Card and insert it under the pill dispenser in slots provided over
the battery cover for future reference.
Lock.
We recommend that the caregiver keeps the e-pill Med-Time XL locked at all times, in order
to prevent the patient from accessing the medications or changing the timer settings.
Two (2) identical keys are included with your system.
Unlock: Turn the key counter clockwise to unlock.
Lock: Turn the key clockwise to lock.

HOW TO USE YOUR e-pill MED-TIME XL
PATIENT INSTRUCTIONS
For the patient the e-pill Med-Time XL Automatic Pill Dispenser is very simple to use;
When the alarm sounds, simply walk over to the e-pill dispenser, pick it up, and turn it
over. The right medications, in the right dosage, will come out at the right time.
Turning the device upside-down, automatically turns off the alarm.
How to Dispense Medications
1. Med-Time XL sounds the alarm at the same time(s) every day.
2. Dispense medications by turning Med-Time XL upside down holding it with one hand.
3. The right medications will fall out of the opening in to your other open hand.
4. Turning the device upside down turns off the alarm. Return the dispenser to the right
side up position.
Please note that if the patient has missed a dose…
It will be rotated away when the next medication time occurs.
This may prevent double dosing.
A missed dose can only be retrieved by unlocking the Automatic Pill Dispenser.
Early Dose Feature (BEFORE)
It is possible to take pills before the scheduled alarm time by activating the BEFORE function.
If this feature is active and you would like to dispense the pills prior to the scheduled alarm
time, follow the instructions below.
Please see Mode-B section on how to turn on this useful feature.
How to Early Dose (“turn twice then dispense”)
1. Turn Med-Time XL over as if you were
removing the medications.
2. After you hear the beep, turn the device back
over to the normal resting position.
3. Repeat again. The tray rotates one step, and
the next dose becomes available.
4. Turn Med-Time XL over to dispense your
medications (as you normally would) and to
reset the alarm.
The Early Dose Feature works only within the time frame set using the BEFORE function (5
minutes - 30 minutes maximum).

BATTERIES & MAINTENANCE
Battery Replacement: When the batteries get low, the LOWBATT indicator is
displayed. Replace the batteries as soon as possible. Four (4) Alkaline AA batteries are
needed. Please note that you must use Alkaline Batteries.
We recommend that you exchange the batteries at least once a year.
Cleaning: Wipe Med-Time XL with a damp cloth. Wash the medication tray by hand
only.
Transporting: If for any reason your dispenser is going to be shipped or mailed, it is
important that you remove all batteries from the dispenser prior to shipping.
