CH Series - COMPRESSOR HEATER INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
MODELS
CH501 – For use at 120 Vac
CH502 – For use at 208 Vac to 277 Vac
KIT CONTENTS
This product is designed for use as a heater on air conditioning and refrigeration metal compressors up to 107 cm (42 in) in
circumference in ordinary (non-hazardous) locations. The product is intended to warm the compressor casing to facilitate
“cold start-up” conditions.
The cable consists of a heating section and a non-heating cold lead for connection to power supply in a junction box.
Read the entire instruction sheet before starting the installation. The cable must be installed by a qualified HVAC/refrigeration technician
and/or an electrician.
WARNINGS!
aHeating cables must be installed in compliance with all national, state, provincial, and local electrical codes.
These instructions must be retained and made available to the user and transferred to future users.
It is recommended that the circuit supplying the heating cable have ground fault protection; this is mandatory by electrical code
for some applications in many regions. Consult an electrical inspector to determine the specific ground fault requirements for your
application prior to installation. If you are unsure that your circuit has ground fault protection, consult an electrician.
Do not alter the length of the heating cable – the cable is factory sealed and alteration will result in risk of fire or electrical shock.
Post warning labels supplied with the cable to the power supply disconnect switch and in the area of installation.
Due to the cable’s oval shape and flexibility, it is intended to be coiled only with the flat side of the cable against the compressor to
provide appropriate heat transfer. Do not bend tighter than a 8 cm (3 in) diameter as this will damage the heating cable and result in
reduced heat output.
Do not expose the cable to temperatures above 66°C (150°F): Degradation of the heating cable will result. Minimum installation
temperature for the heating cable set is 0°C (32°F) – installation at lower temperatures will damage the cable and result in fire or
shock hazard.
Do not use this cable for other applications, such as pipe freeze protection or roof de-icing; the cable is not designed for these
applications and fire, shock, injury or death may occur.
INSTALLATION
Before installing the heating cable, ensure the compressor surface is clean and free of any sharp edges that may damage the heating cable.
For best heating, the heating cable must be installed with the printing visible to the outside. Spiral the heating cable flat in good contact
against the compressor around the bottom-to-lower third of the compressor at a uniform spacing such that it does not overlap itself (to
facilitate optimum heat transfer). If necessary, however, the cable may touch or overlap itself without being damaged.
Insert the cable tie into its clip and in a secure and snug manner. Do not tighten more than 6.8 kilograms-force (15 pounds-force) or
else the cable tie will come away from cable and result in poor securement. (Once the cable tie engages the ribs, the tie will securely
hold the cable in place.) The cable tie may overlap the heating cable (see Figure 1 on page 2).

The excess cable tie may be trimmed off.
The non-heating lead is to be directly wired into an electrical junction box with the box and all appropriate fittings to be provided by the
installer. Connections must remain dry, made within an environment suitable for moist locations and be located a minimum of 10 cm
(4 in) off of the base pan.
Do not apply thermal insulation over the heating cable.
For the CH501 at 120
Vac
, connect the black (live) and the white (neutral) wires to the supply voltage and the green wire to ground.
For the CH502 at 208 to 277
Vac
, connect the black (live 1) and the red (live 2 [neutral for 277
Vac
]) to the supply voltage and the
green wire to ground. The supply voltage may be controlled by a thermostat or may be directly wired to line voltage. If directly wired,
ensure that cable does not operate in extremely hot conditions exceeding 66°C (150°F) – or else the cable will degrade and will not
dissipate adequate heat in cold conditions.
The heat output of the cable will be greater at lower temperatures and less at warmer temperatures. Although the output is reduced
as the temperature rises, the cable will not completely turn itself off. There is no in-line thermostat or control built into the assembly.
It is recommended that a thermostat be used to control the cable; this will prevent the cable from operating when the compressor or
ambient temperature is warm. This will save energy and extend the life of the cable.
OPERATION
Operate CH501 cable at 120
Vac
only. Approximate output by temperature is listed below.

SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE
When servicing the cable or compressor, the heating cable must be disconnected from electrical power.
Replace any damaged cables as soon as the damage is discovered. Do not operate damaged cables.
Inspect cables annually for damage and proper operation. Check any ground fault protection for proper operation. Check controls to
ensure proper operation.
