is intended exclusively foroutdoorinstallation.This generator
will operateusing eithervaporwithdrawnliquidpropane ( L P ) or
naturalgas ( N G ) .

This generator is suitable for supplying typical
residentialloads such as Induction Motors (sump
pumps,refrigerators,air conditioners,furnaces,etc.),

Potentially lethalvoltages are generated by

render the machine safe before attempting to
workon the generator.
Parts ofthe generator are rotating and/or hot
during operation.Exercise care near running

Installation mustalways comply with applicable

A running generator gives off carbon monoxide,
and odorless,colorless poison gas.Breathing in
carbon monoxide can cause headaches,fatigue,
diziness,nausea,vomitting,confusion,fainting,
siezures or death.

1.1 UNPACKING/INSPECTION
Afterunpacking,carefully inspectthecontents forda m age.
This standby generatorsetis ready forinstallationwithafactory•
suppliedand pre- m ountedbasepadand has aweatherprotec-
tiveenclosurethatis intendedforoutdoorinstallation only.
Ifthis generator is used to power electricalload
circuits normally powered by a utility power
source,itis required by code to install a transfer
switch.The transfer switch musteffectively isolate
the electricalsystem from the utility distribution
system when the generator is operating (NEC 700,
701 &702).Failure to isolate an electricalsystem
by such means will resultin damage to the gen-
erator and also may resultin injury or death to
utility power workers due to backfeed ofelectrical
energy.

1.3 NEC REQUIREMENTFOR ARC FAULT
CIRCUITINTERRUPTION BREAKER FOR
BEDROOMS
In2001,the N ationalElectricCode ( N EC ) introducedarequire m ent
fornew construction.This new require m entindicates theneedfor
ArcFaultCircuitInterrupters tobeusedtoprotecttheco m plete
branchcircuitthatfeeds adwelling bedroo m .Theactual N EC
require m entis indicatedbelow.
1.3.1 SECTION 210.12 ARC FAULTCIRCUITINTER-
RUPTER PROTECTION
1. D efinition:Anarcfaultcircuitinterrupteris adeviceintended
toprovideprotectionfro m theeffects ofarcfaults by recog-
nizing characteristics uniquetoarcing and by functioning to
de-energizethecircuitwhenanarcfaultis detected.

volt,single-phase,15 and 20 a m pereoutlets installedin
dwelling unitbedroo m s shall beprotectedby anarcfaultcir-
cuitinterrupterlistedtoprovideprotectionoftheentirebranch

S ection210.12 requires thatAFCIprotectionbeprovidedonbranch
circuits thatsupply outlets ( receptacle,lighting,etc. ) indwell-
ing bedroo m s.Therequire m entis li m itedto15 and 20 a m pere,
125 voltcircuits.Thereis noprohibitionagainstproviding AFCI
protectiononothercircuits orinlocations otherthanbedroo m s.
Becausecircuits areoftensharedbetweenabedroo m and other
areas suchas closets and hallways,providing AFCIprotectionon
theco m pletecircuitwouldco m ply with210.12.
Ifduring theinstallationoftheho m estandby syste m thedecision
is m adetoprovidebackup powertoabedroo m branchcircuit,
thenthecircuitbreakerinthetransferswitchshouldbereplaced
withanArcFaultCircuitInterrupter.
It is m osti m portantthatbreakers only beswitchedlikeforlike.
Forinstance,ifreplacing a15A breaker,itM U S Tbereplacedwith
a15A AFCIbreaker. L ikewise,a20A breakerM U S Tbereplaced
witha20A AFCI.

1.8 FUELREQUIREMENTS
ANDRECOMMENDATIONS
With LP gas,useonly thevaporwithdrawal system.This typeof
syste m uses thevapors for m edabovetheliquidfuelinthestorage
tank.
Theenginehas beenfittedwithafuelcarburetionsyste m that
m eets thespecifications ofthe1997 CaliforniaAir R esources
Boardforta m per-proofdualfuelsyste m s.Theunitwill run on
naturalgas or L Pgas,butithas beenfactory settorun onnatural
gas. S houldthepri m ary fuelneedtobechangedto L Pgas,the
fuelsyste m needs tobereconfigured. S ee thereconfiguring the
Fuel S yste m sectionforinstructions onreconfigurationofthefuel
syste m .
R eco mm endedfuels shouldhaveaBtucontentofatleast1,000
Btus percubicfootfornaturalgas;oratleast2,520 Btus per
cubicfootfor L Pgas.AskthefuelsupplierfortheBtucontentof
thefuel.
R equiredfuelpressurefornatural gas is five(5)inches to seven
(7)inches watercolumn (0.18 to 0.25 psi);and forliquid pro-
pane,10 inches to 12 inches ofwatercolumn (0.36 to 0.43 psi).
Theprimary regulatorforthepropanesupply is NOTINCLUDED
with thegenerator.
NOTE:
All pipe sizing,construction and layoutmustcomply
with NFPA 54 for naturalgas applications and NFPA
58 for liquid propane applications.Once the genera-

1.11 LOCATION
1.11.1 GENERATOR
Install thegeneratorset,inits protectiveenclosure,outdoors,
whereadequatecooling and ventilating airis always available
( Figure1.9 ) .Considerthesefactors:
Theinstallationofthegenerator• mustcomply strictly with
NFPA 37,NFPA 54,NFPA 58,and NFPA 70 standards.
Install theunitwhereairinletand outletopenings will not•
beco m eobstructedby leaves,grass,snow,etc.. Ifprevailing
winds will causeblowing ordrifting,considerusing awind-
breaktoprotecttheunit.
Install thegeneratoronhigh ground wherewaterlevels will not•
riseand endangerit.
Allow sufficientroo m onall sides ofthegeneratorfor m ainte-•
nanceand servicing.This unit m ustbeinstalledinaccordance
withcurrentapplicable N FPA 37 and N FPA 70 standards;as

DANGER
The engine exhaustfumes contain carbon mon-
oxide,which can be DEADLY.This dangerous
gas,if breathed in sufficientconcentrations,
can cause unconsciousness or even death.This
generator mustbe installed properly,in strict
compliance with applicable codes and stan-
dards.Following installation,do nothing that
mightrender the system unsafe or in noncom-
pliance with such codes and standards.
• Operate the generator outdoors ONLY.
• Keep exhaustgases from entering a confined
area through windows,doors,ventilation,crawl
spaces or other openings (Figure 1.9).
• GeneracPower Systems as a responsible manu-
facturer highly recommends thatcarbon monox-
ide detector(s) be installed indoors according to
the manufacturer ' s instructions/recommendations.
• The generator mustme mounted safely per appli-
cable codes and the manufacturer ' s specifica-
tions.Do NOT alter or add to the exhaustsystem,
or do anything thatmightrender the exhaustsys-
tem unsafe or in noncompliance with applicable
codes and standards.
1.11.2 INSTALLATION GUIDELINESFOR EATON
STATIONARY AIR-COOLED8,10,14,17 AND
20 KWGENERATORS.
The N ationalFireProtectionAssociationhas astandardforthe
installationand useofstationary co m bustionengines.That
standardis N FPA 37 and its require m ents li m itthespacing ofan
enclosedgeneratorsetfro m astructureorwall ( Figure1.10 ) .
N FPA 37, S ection4.1.4,Engines L ocated O utdoors.Engines,and
theirweatherproofhousings ifprovided,thatareinstalledoutdoors
shall belocatedatleast5 ft.fro m openings inwalls and atleast5
ft.fro m structures having co m bustiblewalls.A m ini m u m separa-
tionshall notberequiredwherethefollowing conditions exist:
1.Theadjacentwall ofthestructurehas afireresistancerating
ofatleast1 hour.
2.Theweatherproofenclosureis constructedofnonco m bus-
tible m aterials and ithas beende m onstratedthatafirewithin
theenclosurewill notigniteco m bustible m aterials outsidethe
enclosure.

theguidelines forinstallationofthegenerators listedaboveare
changedto18 inches ( 457 mm ) fro m thebacksideofthegenera-
tortoastationary wall orbuilding.Foradequate m aintenanceand
airflow clearance,thearea abovethegeneratorshouldbeatleast
4 feetwitha m ini m u m of3 feetatthefrontand ends oftheenclo-
sure.This wouldincludetrees,shrubs and vegetationthatcould

These guidelines are based upon fire
testing of the generator enclosure and
the manufacturer’s requirement for air
flow for proper operation. Local codes
may be different and more restrictive
than what is described here.

1.12 BATTERY REQUIREMENTS

1.13 BATTERY INSTALLATION
Fill thebattery withtheproperelectrolytefluidifnecessary and
havethebattery fully chargedbeforeinstalling it.
Beforeinstalling and connecting thebattery,co m pletethefollow-
ing steps:

2.Turnoff utility powersupply tothetransferswitch.
3. R e m ovethe7.5A fusefro m thegeneratorcontrolpanel.

1.14 THE BATTERY
DANGER
Do notdispose ofthe battery in a fire.The
battery is capable ofexploding.
A battery presents a riskofelectricalshock
and high shortcircuitcurrent.The following pre-
cautions are to be observed when working on
batteries:
• Remove the 7.5A fuse from the generator control
panel.
• Remove watches,rings or other metalobjects;
• Use tools with insulated handles;
• Wear rubber gloves and boots;
• Do notlay tools or metalparts on top ofthe
battery; and
• Disconnectcharging source prior to connecting or
disconnecting battery terminals.
Do notopen or mutilate the battery.Released
electrolyte has been known to be harmfulto the
skin and eyes,and to be toxic.
The electrolyte is a dilute sulfuricacid thatis
harmfulto the skin and eyes.Itis electrically
conductive and corrosive.
The following procedures are to be observed:
• Wear full eye protection and protective clothing;
• Where electrolyte contacts the skin,wash itoff
immediately with water;
• Where electrolyte contacts the eyes,flush thor-
oughly and immediately with water and seekmedi-
calattention; and
• Spilled electrolyte is to be washed down with an
acid neutralizing agent.A common practice is to
use a solution of1 pound (500 grams) bicarbonate
ofsoda to 1 gallon (4 liters) ofwater.The bicar-
bonate ofsoda solution is to be added until the
evidence ofreaction (foaming) has ceased.The
resulting liquid is to be flushed with water and the
area dried.
Lead-acid batteries presenta riskoffire
because they generate hydrogen gas.The fol-
lowing
procedures are to be followed:
• DO NOT SMOKE when near the battery;
• DO NOT cause flame or sparkin battery area; and
• Discharge staticelectricity from body before
touching the battery by firsttouching a grounded
metalsurface.

Be sure the AUTO/OFF/MANUAL switch is setto
the OFF position before connecting the battery
cables.Ifthe switch is setto AUTO or MANUAL,
the generator can crankand startas soon as
the battery cables are connected.
Be sure the utility power supply is turned off
and the 7.5A fuse is removed from the generator
controlpanel,or sparking may occur atthe bat-
tery posts as the cables are attached and cause
an explosion.
S ervicing ofthebattery is tobeperfor m edorsupervisedby per-
sonnelknowledgeableofbatteries and therequiredprecautions.
Keepunauthorizedpersonnelaway fro m batteries.
S ee the S pecifications sectionforthecorrectsizeand rating when
replacing thebattery. H avetheseprocedures perfor m edatthe
intervals specifiedinthe“ S ervice S chedule.”A negativeground
syste m is used.Battery connections areshownonthewiring dia-
gra m s.Makesurethebattery is correctly connectedand ter m inals
aretight. O bservebattery polarity whenconnecting thebattery to
thegeneratorset.
1.15 BATTERY CHARGER
NOTE:
These generators DO NOT contain an internalbattery
charger.
NOTE:
The manufacturer provides a battery trickle charger
thatis active when the unitis setup for automatic
operation.With the battery installed and utility power
source voltage available to the transfer switch,the
battery receives a trickle charge to preventself-
discharge.The trickle charger is designed to help
extend the life ofthe battery by maintaining the bat-
tery.The trickle charge feature cannotbe used to
recharge a discharged battery.
A separatebattery charger m oduleis includedwiththegenerator.
( Forbattery chargerinstallation,see the G eneratorInstall G uidelines

D uring initialstartup only,thegenerator m ay exceedthenor m al
nu m berofstartatte m pts and experiencean“overcrank”fault ( S ee
the " O vercrank " section ) .This is duetoaccu m ulatedairinthefuel
syste m during installation. R esetthecontrolboardand restartup
totwo m oreti m es,ifnecessary.Ifunitfails tostart,contactthe
localdealerforassistance.
Never operate the engine with the oil level
belowthe “Add”markon the dipstick.Doing this
could damage the engine.
2.2 ELECTRICALCHECKS

AC.

Itis importantnotto proceed until certain thatgener-
ator AC voltage and frequency are correctand within
the stated limits.Generally,if both AC frequency and
voltage are high or low,the engine governor requires
adjustment*(*GH410 only).Iffrequency is correct,
butvoltage is high or low,the generator’s voltage
regulator requires adjustment.
2.3 GENERATOR TESTSUNDER LOAD
To testthegeneratorsetwithelectricalloads applied,proceedas
follows:

Such automaticstarting occurs when utility
power source voltage droops belowa preset
levelor during the normalexercise cycle.To
preventpossible injury thatmightbe caused
by such sudden starts,always setthe switch to
OFF and remove the fuses before working on or
around the generator or transfer switch.Then,
place a “DO NOT OPERATE”tag on the genera-
tor paneland on the transfer switch.

a10 second lineinterruptdelay ti m eis started.Iftheutility is still
gonewhentheti m erexpires,theenginewill crankand start. O nce
started,a20 to50 second selectableenginewar m -up ti m erwill be
initiated. W henthewar m -up ti m erexpires,thecontrolwill transfer
theloadtothegenerator.Iftheutility poweris restored ( above80%
ofno m inal ) atany ti m efro m theinitiationoftheenginestartuntil
thegeneratoris ready toacceptload ( and thewar m -up ti m ehas

3.3.2 CRANKING
Thesyste m will controlthecycliccranking as follows:16 second
crank,seven ( 7 ) second rest,16 second crank,seven ( 7 ) second
restfollowedby three ( 3 ) additionalcycles ofseven ( 7 ) second
cranks followedby seven ( 7 ) second rests.
