RUNNING COSTS:-
As theroombuilds up heat it draws fullpoweronceachieveditwillonly take smaller amounts,
switchingoffandallowingtheroomto dropto cold only to re heatit again is a falseeconomy.
Measuring consumption,to make a truetest this must be done over along period, indeed 40%of
the entireyears consumptionof most households canbe seenin a one twomonthperiod. Our
original measured yearsaw around10% beingusedin a 10 day period at the peak of winter.
Original measurement was 07/08,thefollowingyear08/09was30% upandso09/10 willbe far
worse, winter 09/10beingthew orstwinteronrecordfor over30years.
ACHIEVING THE BEST RUNNING COSTS –A HANDY GUIDE
Price per kWh- bew arned, never phoneus withoutknowingthis;somany people arepaying at
least 30%more than they shouldhave to.
If youhaveEconomy 7,10 or indeed a pay asyougo (key meter), ditchthem withoutdelay, they
willinflateyour running costs potentially as much as DOUBLE! They workona basis of giving
w ith one hand and taking aw ay with the other; they are both a ‘sleight of hand’.
E.g. off peak7p / onpeak 15p. If wetakethe averageit willalwayscomebacktoat least a
normal 24hour single rateof 11p –so why bother? If youdonotbelieve me then take a bill, add
up all the units usedforbothperiods, the bill willhavea total valuesodivide one into the other
and this willgive youthe averageyouhavepaid.
11p per kWh is the maximum advisedon a singlerate, the energy market is increasingsoplease
do not blame us for this! Shop aroundfor thebestprices.
Switchingon and off -If yousubscribetothis practiceinthe veinbelief youare savingmoney
then think again. Constant sw itchingonandoff ANY heatingsystemw hether itis gas, lpg, oil or
electric,is a falseeconomy.
The running costs of our ‘real life’ measured and published properties arebasedon switchingon
and NEVER switchingoff365days /24hours. However,wespecify a4degreedropat night
whenasleepor outat work,orwhentherooms arenot used.
Raising atemperature by 4° or indeed maintaining a constanttemperatureis far cheaper than
switchingonandoff allthe time.
Seasonaldemand - Ido get people whoringme in the winterina mad panic. Their firstmistake
is they pay the w rongprice fortheir electricity, nothavinga realistic view ontheir heating needs.
80%of energy is used in the six winter months of theyear!
40%is usedin the twopeakmonths!
10%is usedin merely a few @5 of theworstdays!
So DO NOT be surprisedby high readings in the winter.08/09was higher than07/08by 30%
09/10 is the coldestwinter for 30years.12/13wentonmuchlongerthan 11/12. So thatwillbe up
again by a huge margin!
Insulation-My poorly insulated portacabin uses 2.5times more thanmy domestic rooms.
Remember youarein control. If you turnup the temperature youspendmore money. If you turnit
downyouspendless.Alwaysshop around forthebest electricity price.
