1 Introduction
Determination of Fineness using Blaine’s Apparatus (EN196-6, BS 4359-2, ASTM
C204)
1.1 The determination of specific surface of a powder is a commonly accepted method for
checking particle size of that powder. There are several ways of doing this, of which
the cement industry uses an air permeability method.
1.2 This method has been adopted in Europe as the definitive means of determining the
fineness of cement and other ‘powder’ materials
1.3 Blaine Air Permeability Apparatus comes complete with stainless steel cell,
perforated disc and plunger. A manometer U-tube, aspirator, bottle of manometer
liquid and a box of filter papers are supplied with the apparatus.
