3.0 SafetyRules for BandSaws
As with all powertools there isa certain amount of hazard involved with the operator andhis unse ofthe machine.
Using the machinewith the respect and cautiondemanded asfaras safetyprecautions are concernedwill
considerablylessen the possibility of personalinjury. If, however,normalsafetyprecautions are overlooked or
completelyignored,personal injury tothe operator can develop.
Thismachinefallsunder the WoodworkingMachineryRegulations 1974. For your own safety itis recommended
to follow the instructionsgiven inthe WoodworkingMachinesRegulations 1974 Guidance and Regulations ref.

1. FOR YOUR OWN SAFETYREAD AND UNDERATANDTHISINSTRUCTIONMANUALBEFOREOPERATING
THE SAW:Learn the saw'sapplication and limitations as well asthe specifichazardspeculiar toit.
2. PERMANENTLYMOUNTYOURBAND SAW beforeperformingcuttingoperations.
3. KEEPGUARDS IN PLACE and workingorder.
4. MAKE ALL ADJUSTMENTS ANDSET UPS,such as tilting the table or adjusting thesaw bladeguards and blade
guides.WITH THE POWEROFF.
5. ADJUSTBLADETENSION,upper and lowerbladeguides,thrustbearing, and bladetrackingcorrectly.
6. DOOR AND BLADEGUARDmust bein place and securelyfastenedwhenperforming anysaw operations.
7. SECURELYLOCK ALL ADJUSTABLEPARTS so theycannotloosenwhilesawing.Thiswillpreventdistraction
duringsawingoperations.
8. PLACE THE BLADEGUARD to approximately 5 mm above the materialbeingcut.
9. USETHE PROPERBLADETYPE AND SIZE forthe materialbeingcut.
10. ALWAYSKEEPHANDS AND FINGERSAWAYfrom thesaw blade,especially attheendofa cut.
Usea spike or pushstick as neccessary.
11. HOLDMATERIALFIRMLY and feedinto the blade ata moderatespeed.
12. USEA PUSHSTICK or piece of scrapwood todothe pushing and guiding when sawing small pieces whichrequire
the fingers tobe close tothe blade.
13. DONOTSAW SSTOCKshatdoes not have a flat surfaceunless a suitablesupport is used.
14. ALWAYSSTOP THE MACHINEbeforeremovingscrappiecesfrom the table.
15. STOP THE MACHINE IF THE MATERIAOL ISTOBE BACKED OUTOFAN UNCOMPLETEDCUT:
18. WHENSAWINGCURVES,makereliefcuts to allowremoval of scrapmaterial.Thiswillhelp to preventundue
twisting or binding ofthesaw blade. The relief cuts are made before starting the curvedcut.
4.0 Initiation
4.1 FinalAssembly
To facilitatebetterhandling and preventdamage to projectingpartsduringtransport,thismachine is shipped
partly disassembled. After unpacking, thesaw table, rip fence and crankhandlehave tobe assembled and
mountedbefore thesawcanbe takenintooperation.
Remove wrapping and check forany visibledamageswhich may haveoccuredduringtransport. If damages are
detected, notify yourdealerimmediately.
To assembletableproceed as follows:
Remove rip fence carrier extrusion(93) to table(90).Place the fourcarriageboltsM8x30 (108) into the t-slot of
the table, place table ontoupper table trunnion (92) and secure carraige bolts withwasher M8.4 (109), spring
washer B8 (110) and hex.nuts M8 (111).
Attach rip fencecarrierextrusion(93) to table and tighten nuts.
Press tableinsert(pos. 88for90° cuts,pos. 23for bevelcuts)intotable and alignslotparallelwith saw blade.

Insertboltguide(97)withcarriageboltM8x50 (112) into therip fencecarrierextrusion's t-slot.
Place rip fencecarrier(95)ontocarriagebolt (112) and tighten with washer A 8.4 (109) and locklever M8 (25).
Bolt rip fenceextrusion(94) torip fencecarrier(95)with 2 eachcarriageboltM6x35 (113), washer A 6.4 (35) and knurled
nut M6 (104).

Attach crankhandle(75) to crank (51), using cap screw M6.55 (107) andtwo hex.flatnuts M6 (76).
After assembly the table has tobe aligned in order to have the bladerunningthrough the centre ofthe tableinsert'sslot.
To movetablesideways,loosenbolts onthe lowertabletrunnion (91). Movetabletrunnion to left or right,untilblade
runsthroughcenter of slot. Tighten bolts, be carefulthat table stays in positionwhilebolts are beingtightened.
Tosetthe tablesquare tothe blade, thecapnutonthe stop onthe underside ofthe table hastobe turned inor out,
as required.

After the table is correctlyaligned affix the scale(96) totherip fencecarrierextrusion(93).
To ensuresufficienntuprightstabilitymachineshould be bolted tobe bench or table, or mounted onthe ELEKTRA
Workstand BAS 315,available as optionalaccessory.

4.2 Connection to PowerMains
Checkmotortypeplate tobe surethatratedmathcesvoltage of youroutlet.
Thismachinemust be earthedwhile inuseto protectoperatorformelectricshock.
Model BAS 315/55 is suppliedeitherwith a switchwithintegratedplug(SSK) ora switchwith a 3-conductorcord.
The yellow-greenconductor ofthe cord isthe earthlead.
Fit a SCHUKO-typefemalereceptacle toen extensioncord to connect tothe SSK-typeswitch, ora plug of your
localstandrad tothe powercord.
Never connectearthlead toa liveterminal!
Caution!Disconnectmachinefrompowerwhenservicing or changingblades.
On machinesequippedwithelectronicmotorbrake a lighthummingsound,emittedfrom the switchwhile
machine is connected tp powermains, is normal and does not represent a fault.

5.0 Operation
5.1 Changing/Setting ofSaw Blade
Thisband sawis factory-equippedwith a generalpurposewoodcuttingblade,size2240x12x0.5 mm, tooth
spacing 6 mm.
To change blade, remove rip fencecarrierextrusion(93)from saw table. Then slacken blade tension by turning
vlade tensionerhandwheel (9) counter-cloxkwise,openbothdoors and swing saw bladeguard outofthe way.
Remove bladefrommachine.
Fitnew blade and tension lightly. Blade must runin centre of band saw wheels or else itmay jump off. To check
alignmentturnupperwheel by hand. If necessary,adjust tilt of upperband saw wheelwithstarknobsettingscrew
(26) at rear of upperwheelhousing. Ifa blade of differentwidth is fitted, the thrustbearings of the upper and lower
bladeguidemust be adjustes. Set thrustbearingsagainstblade so that its teeth are justrunningclear ofthe guide
bearings/pilot pins. Fully tension blade.
5.2 Guiding ofSaw Blade
Fora clean and straight cut sufficent lateralsupport ofthe blade is necessary.Thissupport is provided bythe
3-roller guide atthe blade guard assembly. Keep the guide bearings set closely against the blade, woth only
minimalplay ofthe blade, for bestperformance.
The pilotpins(14) of zthelowerbladeguide are subject to wear.Regularlycheckblade for play and adjustpins
to take the play out.
To adjust,loosenthreadedpins at rear of pilot pin guidewithAllen key3 mmn, providedwithmachine, andset
pilot pinsagainstblade,touching it lightly. Tightenthreadedpins to secure in position.
5.3 Change ofSaw Blade Speed
On band saw model BAS 315/55 two cuttingspeeds canbe selected by changing the v-belt onthe drivepulleys.
Slacken v-belttensionwithcrank (51), located at rightlowerwheelhousing.Bothlower band saw wheel and
motorpulley are two-stepped.Placev-belt(78) on either front or reargroove on bothpulleys,slidev-belttension
pulley(53)intocorrespondingposition on slidingshaft(59).Tightenv-beltwithcrank (51).

5.4 Setting of CuttingHeight
The upperbladeguideshouldalways besetas close as possibleagainst the work. The

5.5 Setting ofSaw Table
For bevelcuts thesaw table canbe steplesslytilted upto 45°. To tilt, loosen the locklever(25)holding the upper
trunnion (92) tothe lower trunnion (91), swing table to desired position and retightennuts.
Use wideslottableinsert(23), so blade can travelfreely.
6.0 AdditionalSafetyRules
1. Disconnectfrompowerchangingblades or servicingmachine.
2. Beforeswitchingmachine onbe surethat all guards arein place and securelylocked.
3. Donotuse cracked or bent saw blades.
4. Replacetableinsert(23/88) if slot has enlarged.
5. For cuttingoperationswithtiltedtable therip fencemust be placed tothe right ofthe blade.
6. Whencuttingroundstock usea suitable jigto preventworkfromturning.
7. Whencuttingboards inan uprightposition usea suitablepushblock to preventkickback.
