This document is an agreement (“Agreement”) between You, the end user, and Enterasys Networks,
Inc. (“Enterasys”) that sets forth your rights and obligations with respect to the Enterasys software
program (“Program”) in the package. The Program may be contained in firmware, chips or other
media. UTILIZING THE ENCLOSED PRODUCT, YOU ARE AGREEING TO BECOME BOUND
BY THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT, WHICH INCLUDES THE LICENSE AND THE
LIMITATION OF WARRANTY AND DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE
TO THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT, RETURN THE UNOPENED PRODUCT TO

regulation by agencies of the U.S. Government, including the U.S. Department of Commerce, which

may be relied upon by the exporting party.
If the Program is exported from the United States pursuant to the License Exception CIV under
the U.S. Export Administration Regulations, You agree that You are a civil end user of the Program
and agree that You will use the Program for civil end uses only and not for military purposes.
If the Program is exported from the United States pursuant to the License Exception TSR under
the U.S. Export Administration Regulations, in addition to the restriction on transfer set forth in
Sections 1 or 2 of this Agreement, You agree not to (i) reexport or release the Program, the source
code for the Program or technology to a national of a country in Country Groups D:1 or E:2 (Albania,
Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Cuba, Estonia, Georgia, Iraq, Kazakhstan,

1. DESCRIPTION OF HARDWARE
Gigabit Uplink Module
The Enterasys Networks VHIM1000-S1TX module is designed for use in
Vertical Horizon switch models that have a Gigabit Ethernet transceiver
slot. At present, suitable units include these Vertical Horizon models –
VH-2402S and VH-4802. Detailed information about configuring these
modules and advice about Gigabit Ethernet configuration rules can be
found in the switch’s User Guide.
Enterasys’ VHIM1000-S1TX module provides a Gigabit port which can be
used for a high-speed backbone or server connection. It contains one
1000Base-T port that can support a link of up to 100 m (328 ft) using
Category 5 cable.
Gigabit Port LEDs
Port LEDs are located on the module as well as on the front panel of the
switch for “at-a-glance” network monitoring. The following table details the
indicator functions provided by the switch:
WARNING: Before installing or removing the
VHIM1000-S1TX module, first disconnect the switch from
the main power supply. For full safety instructions, please
refer to the User Guide that accompanies the switch.

1000Base-T Cable Requirements
All Category 5 UTP cables that are used for 100Base-TX connections
should also work for 1000Base-T, providing that all four wire pairs are
connected. However, it is recommended that for all critical connections,
or any new cable installations, Category 5e (enhanced Category 5) cable
should be used. The Category 5e specification includes test parameters
that are only recommendations for Category 5. Therefore, the first step in
preparing existing Category 5 cabling for running 1000Base-T is a simple
test of the cable installation to be sure that it complies with the IEEE
802.3ab standards.
Cable Testing for Existing Category 5 Cable
Installed Category 5 cabling must pass tests for Attenuation, Near-End
Crosstalk (NEXT), and Far-End Crosstalk (FEXT). This cable testing
information is specified in the ANSI/TIA/EIA-TSB-67 standard.
Additionally, cables must also pass test parameters for Return Loss and
Equal-Level Far-End Crosstalk (ELFEXT). These tests are specified in
the ANSI/TIA/EIA-TSB-95 Bulletin, “The Additional Transmission
Performance Guidelines for 100 Ohm 4-Pair Category 5 Cabling.”
Note that when testing your cable installation, be sure to include all patch
cables between switches and end devices.
Adjusting Existing Category 5 Cabling
If your existing Category 5 installation does not meet one of the test
parameters for 1000Base-T, there are basically three measures that can
be applied to try and correct the problem:
1. Replace any Category 5 patch cables with high-performance
Category 5e cables.
2. Reduce the number of connectors used in the link.
3. Reconnect some of the connectors in the link.

2. INSTALLING THE MODULE
The VHIM1000-S1TX module is field installable. Just follow the
instructions below.

Handling the Module
The VHIM1000-S1TX module can easily be damaged by electrostatic
discharge.
To prevent electrostatic damage, observe the following guidelines:
•Do not remove the module from its packaging until you are ready to
install it.
•Do not touch any of the module’s pins, connectors or components.
•Hold the module only by its edges or front panel.
•Wear an anti-static wristband connected to a suitable earth ground
whenever handling the module.
•Store or transport this module only in appropriate anti-static
packaging.
CAUTION: Do not install this module in any unit other
than the VH-2402S or VH-4802. Contact Enterasys for
advice on newly released switches that may be designed
for use with these modules.
CAUTION: The VHIM1000-S1TX module can easily be
damaged by electrostatic discharge.

Instructions
1. Power off the switch: Disconnect the AC power cord from the
switch. If a redundant power unit (RPU) is present, disconnect its DC
cable connection from the switch.
2. Remove network cables: If you are replacing a module, remove the
cable attached to any port on the module.
3. Loosen the screws on the installed module or slot faceplate:
Using your fingers or a flathead screwdriver, turn the screws securing
the module (or faceplate on the slot) in a counter-clockwise direction
until they are free of the chassis. Be sure not to completely remove
the screws from the module or faceplate.
4. Remove the installed module or faceplate: Firmly pull on the
screws until the module is free of the switch. Carefully slide the
module straight out of the slot.
Keep the original faceplate for future use. If you should remove the
module, replace the faceplate to prevent dust and debris from
entering the unit and to maintain proper air flow.
CAUTION: The switch must be powered off before
installing or replacing any module.

5. Insert the new module into the switch: Holding the new module
with the text on the front panel upright, carefully slide the module into
a lower slot on the rear panel, and press gently until it snaps into
place. Be sure the new module’s front panel is flush with the switch
panel.
6. Secure the new module: Secure the new module in place by
screwing the attached screws clockwise into the switch’s chassis.
Tighten them enough to secure the module, but not so tight as to
prevent them from being unscrewed by hand.
NOTE: Media expansion modules can only be placed in the
lower slots.

7. Connect the network cable to the module: Connect Category 5
twisted-pair cable to the port on the newly installed module. See
“Maximum Cable Lengths” on page 13 in this guide for further
information.
8. Power on the switch: Reconnect the previously removed power
sources to the switch. Check the LED indicators for the module port
on the switch’s front panel to be sure that it is operating correctly.
Refer to “Gigabit Port LEDs” on page 1 for a description of the LED
indications. If the module does not respond, see “Troubleshooting”
on page 7.

APPENDIX A. TROUBLESHOOTING
If you experience any problems with the module, check the following
items before contacting Enterasys Technical Support:
•Ensure that the switch with the module is powered up.
•Ensure that the device attached to the module is powered up and
operating correctly.
•Ensure that the module is properly seated in the slot.
•Verify that the module port is configured to match the communication
speed (10, 100, or 1000 Mbps) and mode (full or half duplex) used by
the attached device.
•Make sure that network cables comply with the IEEE 802.3ab Gigabit
Ethernet standard for 1000 Mbps operation. Also, be sure cable
lengths are 100 m (328 ft) maximum.
•Inspect all network cables and connections. Check the connectors on
both ends of a cable to be sure they are properly engaged.
