Esse 990 CH Service manual

990CH user hints & tricks
The Esse 990CH is not like any other cooker or boiler on the market
Its equivalent to 3 products in one;
•It’s a Boiler
•It’s a Stove
•It’s a Cooker
Understanding the controls is the trick on understanding on how to use your stove with no
smoke…
Overview
There are two separate conversations we need to have;
1. Where to put the damper controls
2. Where to put the thermostat air control
Both of these conversations we will cover in this blog
Your Esse Controls
### Oven ByPass control
This is the lever on the right hand side of the flue box
It has 2 positions
•Pushed to the back
This allows the smoke & heat to exit straight out through the flue
•Pushed to the front
This forces the smoke and heat across the right hand side of your stove, and around the ovens
before exiting through the flue
.
### Boiler Bypass control
This is the large silver knob on the front of your stove between the two
top doors
It has 2 positions
•In a Horizontal position
This allows the smoke to bypass the boiler and exit to the flue very easily
•In a Vertical Position
This forces the smoke and heat down the back of your firebox, and through the Boiler Heat
Exchange before exiting through the flue
***Please note*** this control gets very hot - Use the Esse Boiler tool to adjust the position
of the Boiler Bypass
By using these controls in different positions, you can direct the heat to where it is needed
How to put your Esse into "Stove Mode"
This is the mode you have when you are wanting your Esse 990CH to
•Light your cooker from cold
•Re-fueling the firebox
•Overnight contol
•Or to just let your stove tick over...
It spreads the heat evenly between the oven & the boiler and gives the smoke the easiest and
fastest path to exit your cooker
This is the position you need to have when you not only light your stove, but leave your
stove to go out.
Your Esse controls need to be :
•Oven Bypass pushed to the back
•Boiler Bypass horizontal
What you are doing is allowing the smoke to drift across the left hand side of the hot plate,
and straight out the flue –the heat is then evenly distributed through-out the stove
How to put your Esse into "Boiler Mode"
This is the mode when you want your Esse cooker to focus the heat to the boiler to heat
your hydronic system
Your Esse Controls need to be
•Oven Bypass pushed to the back
•Boiler Bypass Vertical
What you are doing is making the smoke and heat to now go down the back of your firebox,
right to under the grate, then up through the boiler heat exchange to heat your hot water, then
exit through the flue
How to put your Esse into "Oven Mode"
As the description is, it’s the mode you have when you wish to really heat up your ovens
Your Esse Controls need to be
•Oven Bypass forward
•Boiler Bypass Horizontal
What you are doing is making the smoke & heat now head over the top of your oven, down
the right hand side of the oven, between the two ovens, then exit up the flue : thus heating
your oven evenly
What to NEVER to do!!!
NEVER have both the
•Oven Bypass in the forward
position
•And the Boiler Bypass in the
vertical position
Doing this will soot up your stove
and make her smoke
Your Esse Air Control
The Esse Thermostatic Air Control is the large
silver dial on the bottom left of your cooker
How this works
The Air Control is connected to a thermostat inside
your Esse's Boiler
As the boiler water temperature reaches the set
temperature, your Esse 990CH will automatically
reduce the air intake to slow the fire down.
As your hydronic system you have set up takes this heat to your radiators, it will cool down
the water in the boiler and the Esse will adjust the air control to allow more air into your fire
to re-heat the water
As you turn the knob up (clockwise) this has set your stove to full maximum heat output
The stove will automatically open up the air to maintain water temperature in your boiler
around the 80°C to 90°C
When you turn the knob all the way to the right, clockwise, this will decrease the burn time
and increase the amount of hot water your stove will produce
.
As you turn the knob down (anticlockwise) this is telling your Esse to make less hot water,
and your stove will adjust the air to your fire to slow down
When you turn the knob all the way to the left, anticlockwise, this will increase the burn time
and reduce the amount of hot water your stove will produce
.
Please note : the air control regulates the air to your fire, it works based that you have filled
the firebox and maintained the wood to your esse cooker based on how “hard” you are using
your Esse 990CH
Lighting your stove
Lighting your Esse 990CH is all about making the smoke exit your cooker as easily as
possible
To do this –set your dampers in this configuration
•Boiler Bypass control to be horizontal
•Oven Bypass leaver to be pushed to the back
Now let's light your cooker
•Pre-heat your flue
•Have your firebox FULL of kindling, nothing thicker than your fingers
•And light using firelighters
•Shut the firebox door
•Leave the ashtray door slightly ajar
•And have the air control thermostat (the silver knob at the bottom left of your stove)
fully turned clockwise
You need to ensure the wood is completely alight before shutting the ash box door
The next load of wood should be as thick as your wrist, nothing thicker –and fully load the
fire box.
Note : the damper controls at this stage are in Stove Mode
Opening the firebox door
No matter what mode you have your Esse 990CH in ( Cooker or Boiler mode ) the way to
open your firebox door is the same
Put your stove into Stove Mode
- Oven Bypass to the back
- Boiler Bypass horizontal
And crack open the firebox door
Allow 30+ Seconds to allow the smoke to change direction and to de-pressurize your firebox;
then open fully to load
