KOAXXA* Series 50-Ohm
Right-Angle Plug Connector Kits for
Flexible Cable 07 NOV 12 Rev A
Figure 1
1. INTRODUCTION
This instruction sheet covers the assembly of KOAXXA
Series 50-ohm right-angle plug connector kits listed in
Figure 1.
Each plug connector is designed to be
attached to the flexible
cable (solid or stranded) type
and size listed in Figure 1
using the following tooling:
In addition, a small bench vice, solder iron, and 2- to
3-mm punch tool will be needed.
Dimensions in this instruction sheet are in metric
units [with U.S. customary units in brackets].
Figures are not drawn to scale.
NOTE
i
2. DESCRIPTION
Each plug connector kit consists of a right-angle plug
assembly, ferrule, and cap. Kits that use RG-178 or 196
cable
also contain a sleeve insert for installing ontothe
cable. The heat shrink tubing (available separately,
l
isted in Figure 1
or a customer supplied equivalent)
i
s
required for assembly of the plug connector kit.
3. ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE
Refer to Figure 1, and select the appropriate cable
type for the plug connector.
Anydeviationsfromthis procedureatthediscretion
of the assembler could affect the performance of
the plug connector.
3.1. Cable Preparation
1. Strip the cable to the dimensions provided in
Figure 2.
2. Tin the cable center conductor.
Figure 2
3.2. Ferrule Crimp
1.
For RG-178 or 196 cable, insert the sleeve insert
into the cable
end of the plug assembly until it stops.
See Figure 3, Detail A.
2. Place the heat shrink tubing, then the ferrule,
onto the cable. Flare the cable braid. See Figure 3,
Detail B.
It is important to install the heat shrink tubing for
product reliability and performance.

3.
Insert
the cable center conductor into the
cable
end of the plug assembly and guide it into the
contact slot. Do not allow the cable braid to enter
the plug assembly. See Figure 3, Detail B.
4. Position the cable braid over the cable end of the
plug assembly. Then, slide the ferrule over the cable
braid until it is against the plug assembly. See
Figure 3, Detail C.
5. While keeping the cable center conductor in
place, crimp the ferrule using the appropriate tool.
Measure the crimp across the flats of the ferrule to
ensure that the crimp height meets the dimension
given in Figure 3.
6. Trim and remove any protruding cable braid
strands.
3.3. Center Contact Attachment
1. Secure the plug
assembly to either the solder
fixture or l
ocator tool with the port hole facing up
.
See Figure 4.
2. Solder the cable center conductor to the contact
by inserting the soldering iron into the plug
assembly port hole and onto the tip of the contact.
DO NOT allow solder to flow beyond the right-angle
joint of the center contact and cable center
conductor.
3.4. Cap Attachment
1. Position the cap, convex side facing out, over
the port hole of the plug assembly. See Figure 5,
Detail A.
2. Press on the cap, then use a small punch tool or
small hand press to expand the cap outward. See
Figure 5, Detail B.
The cap can also be attached using solder or high
temperature epoxy. DO NOT allow solder or epoxy
to enter the plug assembly.
3. If used, remove the solder fixture or locator tool.
3.5. Heat Shrink Tubing
Slide the heat shrink tubing over the cable until it is
against the plug assembly. Heat the tubing until it
conforms to the ferrule.
4. REPLACEMENT
DO NOT use defective or damaged product. DO NOT
re-use any component of the connector by removing
the wire.
