BeforeInstallation
Theinstallationmustconformwith localcodesor,inthe absenceoflocalcodes,with NationalFuelGasCode,
ANSIZ223.1/NFPA54.
Properlyground the unitinaccordancewith alllocalcodesor,inthe absenceoflocalcodes,withthe National
ElectricalCodes,ANSI/NFPA70.
Thiswaterheaterdoesnot haveapilot. Itisequippedwith anignitiondevicethat automaticallylightstheburner.
Donottryto light the burnerbyhand.
Smellallaround the waterheaterarea forevidence ofleaking gas.Besureto smellnextto the oorbecauseLP
gasisheavierthanairand willsettleonthe oor.
Useonlyyourhandtoturnthe manualgasvalveknob. Neverusetools. Ifthe knob willnot turnbyhand, don't try
to repairit. Calla quali ed servicetechnician. Forcedorattemptedrepaircould result in a reorexplosion.

TypicalInstallation

Thermal Expansion
Determine ifacheck valveexistsintheinletwaterline.Checkwith yourlocalwaterutilitycompany.It mayhave
beeninstalled inthe coldwaterlineasaseparatebackowpreventer,oritmaybepartofapressurereducing
valve,watermeterorwatersoftener.Acheck valve located in the cold waterinletlinecan causewhat isreferredto
asa “closedwatersystem.”Acoldwaterinlet line with nocheck valveorbackow prevention deviceis referredto
asan “open”watersystem.
As wateris heated,itexpandsinvolume and createsanincreaseinthepressurewithinthe watersystem.This
action isreferred to as “thermalexpansion.”Inan “open”watersystem,expanding waterwhichexceedsthe
capacityof the waterheater owsbackinto the citymainwherethe pressureiseasilydissipated.
A “closedwater system,”however,preventsthe expanding waterfrom flowing backintothe mainsupplyline,
andtheresultof “thermal expansion”can createarapidand dangerouspressureincreaseinthe waterheater
andsystem piping. Thisrapidpressureincreasecanquickly reachthesafetysettingof therelief valve,causing
ittooperate duringeachheatingcycle.Thermalexpansion,andtheresultingrapidandrepeatedexpansionand
contractionof componentsinthewaterheaterand pipingsystemcancauseprematurefailureoftherelief valve,
and possiblythe heateritself. Replacing the relief valvewillnot correct the "problem!"
The suggested method of controlling thermalexpansion isto install an expansion tankinthe coldwaterline
betweenthewaterheaterand thecheckvalve(seeillustrationabove).Theexpansiontankisdesigned withan air
cushion builtinthatcompressesasthesystempressureincreases,therebyrelievingthe overpressurecondition
andeliminatingtherepeatedoperationofthereliefvalve. Othermethodsofcontrollingthermalexpansionare
alsoavailable. Contactyourinstalling contractor,watersupplierorplumbing inspectorforadditionalinformation
regarding thissubject.

Installation Preparation
Unpack theunit carefully andmakesure that the included accessoriesareputaside so theywillnotbe lost.

Inspect thewaterheaterforpossible shipping damages.
Checkthemarkingsoftheratingplateonthewaterheatertobecertainthetypeofgasbeingfurnished
correspondsto what the waterheaterisequipped for.
Donotconnectthiswaterheaterto a fueltype not in accordance with the rating plate.
Carefullychoosethe locationforthenew heater,asplacementisavery importantconsiderationforthesafetyof
theoccupantsin the building andforthe mosteconomicaluseof the appliance.
Whetherreplacing anold waterheaterorputting the waterheaterin anew location, considerthe following critical
points:
Read the Safetyguidelinesin the beginningof thismanual.
The internalcomputercontrolledregulatoris presetbythemanufacturerand shouldnotbeadjusted bythe
user.
Maintainproperspacearound theunitforservicing.Installthe unitsothat itcanbeconnectedorremoved
easily.
Theelectricalconnectionrequiresameansforswitching offthe powersupply.
Avoidinstallingtheunitinan area withhigh levelsof dust, sand, ordebris.Theseparticlesmayclogtheair
ventorimpairthefunctionof the fan,leadingto impropercombustion.Regularmaintenance isneeded.
Do not installthe unit wheretheexhaustventis pointing into anyopening inabuilding orwherethe noisemay
disturb neighbors.
The locationselectedshouldbe ascloseto the ventterminationpointaspossible,andcentered withinthe
waterpiping system forbesthot waterdelivery.
If ventedthroughanoutsidewallorthrough theroofusing 3"vent piping, thetotalvent runcannotexceed95
feetwithone 90°elbow.If moreelbowsarerequired, the ventingdistancemustbereduced 5feetforevery
90°elbow.
Condensation maybecreated at timesasthe combustion gasesexit the vent cap. Discoloration of surfacesin
proximityto the vent cap mayoccur.

WARNING
Allwaterheaterseventuallycanleak.The applianceshouldbelocated inanarea whereleakage ofthe
tankorconnectionswillnot resultindamageto the area adjacent to theapplianceorto lowersfloors
ofthestructure. Itis required that asuitabledrainpan beinstalledunderthe appliancedrainpansare
availableat yourlocalhardwarestore. Suchdrainpan musthaveaclearanceofat least1.0”(2.5cm)
greaterthananypointonthewaterheater’souterjacketandmustbepipedtoanadequatedrain.
Theminimum inlet gaspressuremustbewithinthe value speci edbythe manufacturerand the minimumvalue
listedisonlyforthe purposeof input adjustment.
If awaterheaterisinstalledinaclosed watersupplysystem, suchasonehaving abackow preventerinthe
coldwatersupplyline,thenathermalexpansiontankisrequired,contactthewatersupplierorlocalplumbing
inspectoron how tocontrolthissituation.
The TemperatureandPressure(T&P)reliefvalvemustbecerti ed asmeetingtherequirement of the Standard
forRelief ValvesandAutomatic GasShut-offDevicesforHot WaterSupply SystemsANSIZ21.22/CAN1-
4.4.The valvemustbemarkedwithamaximum setpressurenot toexceedthemarkedhydrostatic working
pressureofthewaterheater(150 psi) andadischargecapacitynotless than the waterheaterinputrateas
marked ontherating plate.

Condensate Disposal
Overtime, blockageofthetrap bydebrismayoccur;whenthecondensatecannot bereleased, theunitwillgo
into errorandwill shut down. Whenthisoccurs, the trap mustbe cleaned.
Cleaning Out TheCondensate Trap
Thecondensatetrap must be lledwith waterpriorto usingthewaterheater.
Pourwaterdownthe exhaustadaptoruntilwatervisiblyflowsout of the
condensate drainbefore rst use.

1. Remove clip securing trap tothenipple.
2. Gentlypulltrap bodydownwardsto remove.
Thecondensate trap mustbe lledandunobstructed toallowunrestricted ow ofcondensate.Thecondensate
shouldnot be subjectto conditionswherefreezing couldoccur.If the condensateissubjected to freezing or
obstruction, itwillresultinpotentialwaterdamage tothewaterheaterand surrounding area.

The condensatedrain linematerialmustbeanapprovedmaterialbythe authorityhaving jurisdiction. Inabsence
of suchauthority,PVCand CPVCpiping mustcomplywith ASTM D1785 orD2846. Thispipe mustbeconnected
to the condensatetrap. Theend ofthepipe should drainto alaundrytub orto a oordrain.

Thiswaterheaterisahighef ciency,fully condensingappliancewhichproducescondensateduring operation.
Thewaterheaterincorporatesacollectionand removalsystemofcondensatewhichmustbeproperlydrained in
orderto ensure properoperationof thisappliance.
PleaseusePVCorCPVCforthedrainline. Donotusesteel,blackiron, oranyothermaterialwhichcan
corrodewhen contacting with condensate water.
Keep the length of the drainpipe asshortaspossible. Long runs,orapplicationswherethe nearestdrainis
abovethewaterheater,will requirethe useofacondensatepump.Sizethepumptoallowforamaximum
condensate discharge of 2GPH from the waterheater.
Horizontalrunsmust be sloped1/4"perfoot towardsthe drainorcondensatepump.
Besureto checkthat condensate isfreelyflowing fromthe drainpiping afterthe system hasbeeninstalled.
Condensate willbegin owing out ofthewaterheaterwithin 15 minutesafteroperation hasstarted.

Atthetimeofinstallationoftheside wallhorizontalventedgasfueledequipment,theinstallingplumberorgasfittershould
observethatahardwiredcarbonmonoxide detectorwithanalarmand batteryback-upisinstalledonthefloorlevelwhere
thegasequipment isto beinstalled. In addition, the installing plumberorgasfittershould observe that abatteryoperatedor
hardwired carbonmonoxidedetectorwithan alarmis installedon eachadditionallevelof thedwelling, buildingorstructure
served bythesidewall horizontalvented gasfueled equipment. It shouldbe the responsibilityof the propertyownerto
secure the servicesofqualified licensed professionalsfortheinstallation of hard wired carbon momoxide detectors.
In the event that thesidewallhorizontallyventedgasfueled equipment is installed inacrawlspaceoranattic,thehard
wired carbon monoxidedetectorwith alarmand battery back-up maybe installedonthenext adjacent floorlevel.
Intheeventthattherequirementsofthissubdivisioncannotbemetatthetimeofcompletionofinstallation,theowner

Inspection
Thestate orlocalgasinspectorof thesidewallhorizontallyventedgasfueled equipment shouldnotspprovetheinstalltion
unless,uponinspection, theinspectorobservescarbonmonoxide detectors andsignageinstalledinaccordancewiththe
provisionsof 248 CMR 5.08(2)(a)1 through 4.
